They excelled at a high level athletically, in the classroom and in the community, and the Tyler Morning Telegraph and TylerPaper.com are proud to shine a spotlight on those deserving student-athletes by presenting the fourth annual Best Preps Awards.
2022 with 10 specialty awards, were selected from those nominations. Specialty awards this year
included the Heart & Desire and Going the Extra Mile Award, along with awards for Sportsmanship, Outstanding Achievement in Academics, Community Excellence, Top Male and Female athlete, Coach of the Year and Athletic Director of the Year. Coaches from participating schools were asked to submit nominations based on the student-athlete’s contributions on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Nominees were required to be varsity athletes, have a GPA of 3.0 or better and to have verifiable community service or volunteer credentials of 10 or more hours in the current year. “Maria is a ray of sunshine that lights up the whole room when she walks in. She is quick to make friends with all around her and to make everyone feel included and significant. She is a member of our 2020 state championship cross country team and our 2021 state runner-up team. In both 2020 and 2021, Maria earned first team all-state and academic all-state for cross country. In addition, Maria serves as a school ambassador, is on the principal’s honor roll and a member of the student council. Maria is selfless. For years, our cross country team was at the forefront of volunteers and participation in our city’s chapter for Cystic Fibrosis awareness. A member of our team was living with a disease, and every year, we showed up to support. When that team member finally graduated and her brothers graduated, Maria stepped up to continue in their absence. She took charge of organizing volunteers and creating campaign posters and on the day of the event, she led so many during the walk. Not only will the family of her former teammate never forget her kindness and dedication, but her actions encouraged others to also act in a similar manner.”

Garrett came in this season and helped his team to 28 wins, the first outright district title since 2008, first playoff appearance since 2015 and first playoff win since 2010. He averaged 20 points per game and six rebounds, five assists and three steals per game. Garrett also was named the District 16-4A Most Valuable Player and was named to the TABC All-Region Team. Garrett has a 4.57 GPA.”

PETERS AUTOSPORTS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR
John Eastman TROUP HIGH SCHOOL
Troup coach and athletic director John Eastman is retiring after 31 years in coaching. But before he hangs up his whistle, his Troup Tigers have given him a great sendoff. Along with being the athletic director and head football coach, Eastman was also the head golf coach at Troup, leading the Tigers to multiple state tournament appearances and a Class 3A state title in 2017.

Eastman got to Troup in 2003 and was the head football coach from 2005-09. He left for two years to go be on the staff of John Frazier at West Rusk before returning to Troup. He became the head football coach again in 2016 and has led the Tigers for the past six seasons and 11 overall. Troup posted a 68-53 record with Eastman as the head coach, including two 10-win seasons and an 8-4 finish in 2021. This season, along with the football team, other Troup squads making the playoffs include volleyball, both basketball teams, baseball and softball. His Troup boys golf team won the district championship and finished second at regionals, earning a berth in the state tournament once again. The Lady Tigers placed second in district and earned a regional berth. For this standout season and career, Eastman is the 2021-2022 Best Preps Athletic Director of the Year.

PETERS AUTOSPORTS COACH OF THE YEAR
Tim Moore BULLARD HIGH SCHOOL
Tim Moore is a staple in East Texas golf. For the second consecutive season he has led both the girls and boys teams to the state tournament. Moore coached at Bullard High School from 1981 to 1998 when he decided to retire. He led the Panthers and Lady Panthers to numerous state tournament berths as well as five girls state championships (1984, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992).

He returned to coaching, making a couple of stops before spending 10 years at The Brook Hill School in Bullard, leading the Guard and Lady Guard to state titles — Boys (2011, 2013, 2014) and Girls (2010). Moore decided to return to Bullard High School beginning in 2017-18, leading the Panthers to a third-place finish at state that season. Since returning to Pantherland, he has led the Panthers to four state tournaments and the girls to two tourneys. The only years the boys missed state since his return was in 2020 when the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For his efforts, Moore has been named Best Preps Coach of the Year.

“Trude makes the people around her better and has grown tremendously as a person and runner since I first met her in the eighth grade.”(Coach didn’t say this but it’s notable for this award): Lamb played a role in the school being changed from Robert E. Lee High School to Tyler Legacy High School. From a 2020 story before the name was changed: Lee cross country star Trude Lamb said that as an immigrant she has seen the atrocities that come from racism, and she cannot continue to wear the name Robert E. Lee on her uniform. “I cannot bear, and will no longer wear Lee’s name on my jersey,” she said. Lamb said the board must change the name, and not just to Tyler Lee, as the district calls the athletics and academic programs. “Not to Tyler Lee, but to someone who we can all be proud of,” she said. “This town was built on the backs of my slave brothers and sisters. Honor them.” The name of the school was officially changed in August of 2020. Lamb qualified for regionals in cross country and track as a senior.

uest speaker for the year’s Best Preps Awards Banquet was former Pine Tree High School baseball standout Alan Moye, who is currently the principal at Woodcreek Middle School in Humble.
Moye gave a verbal pledge to play baseball at Baylor University prior to his senior season at Pine Tree, but was drafted in the third round of the 2011 Major League Baseball amateur draft and signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Moye spent five seasons playing Minor League Baseball in the Cincinnati and Kansas City organizations, but returned to school in the spring of 2006. After a year away from baseball, he signed to play with the Independent League Fort Worth Cats while attending classes at Baylor University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2009, and a year later had his master’s in sports management. Moye coached for two seasons at North Shore High School in Houston, and later became assistant principal there. “Her freshman year, she suffered an injury that prevented her from finishing out the season. Her sophomore year was cut short by COVID, and her junior year, she was finding it harder and harder to find the energy to be consistent with her training. She had such a promising start, and it seemed like she would not be getting the fairy tale finish she wanted so badly. Every time she was down, she got back up. Every time she was behind, she pushed even harder. She was the definition of perserverance. When Eva began her senior year, she discovered she had a condition that turned out to be the source of her malady from the previous year. Now injury free and knowing the cause of the low energy, she was revitalized and started to rebuild herself into the runner she always knew she could be. Eva is now running faster than she ever has before. She is consistently hitting PRs and is ranked in the top three for the 1600, 3200 and the 800 in the state for our division. She is having the best year of her running career, and she is not taking any part of it for granted. She shows up every day, ready to work, ready to push and ready to encourage others to always believe in themselves. Her story is one that movies are made of, but it was extremely real. I have been her coach for six years now, and I have witnessed the toll everything had taken on her over these years. We are all rooting for her continued success and hopefully for her to get that gold medal to top off her incredible comeback.”

Bishop Gorman’s Elizabeth Mahfood is a standout basketball and soccer player. As a junior, Mahfood led the Gorman basketball team to a record of 25-7, a district championship, a bi-district championship, an area championship and to a regional runner-up finish.

Mahfood led the Lady Crusaders to a state ranking as high as No. 2 by TABC and high as No. 4 by TAPPS. Mahfood was the MVP of TAPPS 4A-District 2 after averaging 17 points and 13 rebounds per game. She ranked second in the state of Texas with 24 doubledoubles. As a senior, Mahfood averaged 19 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. She led Gorman to seasons of 22, 25 and 25 wins during the last three seasons. She is the all-time leading rebounder in the history of Gorman basketball with 1,230 rebounds. She is the second alltime leading Gorman scorer with 1,562 points. “Without question, she is the best private school girls basketball player in all of East Texas and one of the top players at any level in this area,” Bishop Gorman girls basketball coach Jon Froelich said. “She is also one of the top soccer players in the area, though she did not play high school soccer. She was recruited by more than 100 colleges for basketball, though she is planning to play college soccer.” Mahfood is set to play soccer for Tyler Junior College. Mahfood, who has a 4.0 grade point average, participated in “40 Days for Life” and has made several trips to Washington D.C. to participate in the “March for Life” and is a member of the National Honor Society. Mahfood has been selected as the Best Preps Female Athlete of the Year.

Donnell also caught 57 passes for 636 yards and five touchdowns. “Bryson is a generational talent,” Legacy head football coach Joe Willis said. “He, along with Jamarion Miller, made up 95 percent of our offense for his junior and senior year, not to mention his contributions on special teams.” Donnell finished as the sixth leading rusher in school history and the fourth leading scorer, along with being the leading receiver his senior year. “Bryson will be impossible to replace,” Willis said. Donnell had a GPA of 3.31, and he has amassed over 300 hours of community service, including volunteering with Angelic Catering and assisting with an Angel Tree gift presentation to students at Clarkston Elementary. Donnell was a three-year varsity starter in football and a four-year varsity track participant, qualifying for area and regionals. Donnell has been selected as Best Preps Male Athlete of the Year.
