ROSE QUEEN

Laura Elaine Bryan

FullYearsCircle Moment later, Queen Laura Elaine Bryan still finds magic in Texas Rose Festival SANTANA GALLACHER

Laura Elaine Bryan was just a little girl when she hung out backstage as her mother volunteered for the Texas Rose Festival Queen’s Coronation. She has distinct memories of the dramatic production and recalls being in awe at all the glitz and glamor. “I remember looking at all the costumes and headpieces and everything during rehearsal and being amazed,” Bryan said. The coronation is described as an impressive theatrical experience with lavish gowns, incredible staging and an intriguing story that inspires visitors of all ages. Now all grown up as a young woman, Bryan’s role was a bit different this year – she was the star of the show.

In a classic red and gold ballgown, Bryan made her debut on the coronation stage as the 90th Texas Rose Festival Queen. Prior to the coronation, Bryan said she still hadn’t quite taken it all in – the fact that all eyes would be on her during the ceremony. “I don’t know if it will ever sink in that I’m actually the person at the end of the show that everyone’s so excited about,” Bryan said, eager with anticipation. “It’s really special.” Although now on a much larger scale, this isn’t Bryan’s first role on the Queen’s Court. In 2010, she was an Attendant to Queen Mary-Lawson Bracken Walden.

“I was in second grade, and I can remember being backstage, sitting in a makeup chair getting my little makeup done. It was so fun, and it is still fun today,” Bryan said. “Being on stage, I felt like such a superstar and a little Princess up there.” As she got older, the coronation was still Bryan’s favorite event. “I grew up going to it every year, it was just kind of a tradition,” Bryan said. “On Fridays, all my friends would leave school early and go to the matinee and see the Rose Festival Coronation.” A month ahead of the festival as she was anxiously awaiting the date of the big festival to finally arrive, Bryan said that moment of being officially crowned was what she was most looking forward to.

“Not only is it a beautiful, impressive show, but it’s also the culmination of months and months of hard work from a lot of different people,” Bryan said. “Just knowing the number of people it takes to create such an amazing show and seeing that work come to life plus having the community there to come together to witness, it is going to be amazing.” Bryan was ecstatic to unveil her dress – and her court’s costumes – to the public. “The costumes are so beautiful,” she said. “One of my favorite parts of this whole experience was being able to have a say and be involved in the process of designing my dress. Dress Designer) Jacob Climer is amazing at what he does.” The pair had their first meeting around Christmas break of 2022, Bryan said, and that’s when the real fun began. “We hit the ground running, and I’m glad because I was so eager to get started. Immediately on the spot, Jacob started putting into sketch what I was telling him my vision for my dress was. It didn’t take many tries; he knew what I wanted and knew how to take what I was saying and put it into a design. For him to be able to make sense of my wishes and put them into a sketch and make it a reality was super cool to watch.” Bryan wanted to stay true to the festival’s theme, “The Story of Film,” which she said she loves. “Jacob was really able to incorporate the theme and make it very symbolic of film and give it that classic, traditional look while still being in line with who I am,” Bryan said. Part of that was comfortability, she said. “I’m a big comfort person,” Bryan said. “So we knew that going in, that I didn’t want my dress or train to be super heavy. I wanted the weight to be manageable, and it is.” Bryan also wore short block heels underneath the elaborate gown. “If it were up to me, I’d be in sneakers,” Bryan said with a laugh. “But they told me I needed a heel for ‘the look’ and the walk, so we found a pair of short heels that work for me.” But of course, those shoes won’t be seen – all eyes will be on Bryan’s elegant gown. “I wanted it to be classic and pretty – prime Hollywood kind of vibes,” Bryan said. “We went for an art-deco look, which was partially Jacob’s idea. He added in some straighter edges, more gold and specific details that really pulled off that look. “I was going for that old Hollywood kind of feel, like what it would be like to go to the movies back in the day when there was a red curtain on the stage and stuff. The curtain details on my dress are one of my favorite parts. It’s very ‘Great Gatsby’-esque, which is one of my favorite movies and books.” Bryan described the whole process of working with Climer as her saying, “Oh, this would look cool,” and him taking it to “a whole new level.” “With the fabrics and seeing it all come together, it was crazy to watch,” she said. While she loves the bodice and its contrasting colors of gold and red, Bryan says her train is a shining star – literally. Her initials are surrounded by small mirrors, which really stand out and “shine,” she said. “The dress is just so fun to wear, I love it,” Bryan said. Bryan’s dress fittings were in Dallas, just 15 minutes away from her college campus at Southern Methodist University. She had multiple fittings during the spring semester. Although Climer sent her videos of the train, which is made in New York, a private rehearsal this summer was her first time to see it in person. “That was really fun. Pictures and videos don’t do it justice, so seeing it in person was really cool,” Bryan said. “I think my mom cried. It was so beautiful.” And Dad, William Arnold Bryan, may have shed a tear, too.

Laura Elaine Bryan Laura Elaine Bryan, of Tyler, is the 90th Texas Rose Festival Queen. She is the daughter of Mr. William Arnold Bryan and Mrs. Sarah Hightower Bryan. Queen Laura’s other immediate family members include her brother, Forrest Bryan, of Omaha, Nebraska, along with her brother Walker Bryan, of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Queen Laura attends Southern Methodist University, where she is majoring in accounting. She is a member of the Chi Omega sorority. At her college, Bryan is active as Chi Omega’s philanthropy chairman. She is also involved in the SMU Student Foundation and SMU Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity. Bryan’s previous involvement in the Texas Rose Festival includes serving as Attendant to the Queen in 2010 and Junior Hostess of the Queen's Tea in 2017. Bryan’s family also has a long history of being involved in the Texas Rose Festival. Her mother Mrs. Sarah Hightower Bryan was Junior Hostess at the Queen's Tea in 1969, Runner to Queen Amanda Warner in 1973, backstage production volunteer in 1978 and 2019, Lady-In-Waiting in 1979, Assistant Decorations Chairman of the Rose Show in 2000, Coronation Order of Appearance Committee in 2002 and 2003, Coronation Wardrobe Properties Committee in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, Coronation Wardrobe CoChairman in 2007, Coronation Royalty Co-Chairman in 2008, Coronation Co-Chairman in 2009 and 2014, Administrative Assistant to the President in 2010, Past President's Reception Co-Chairman in 2011, Order of the Rose Queen's Ball Committee in 2012, Rose Show Co-Chairman in 2013, Queen's Tea Committee in 2019 and Drake Bracer Committee in 2021 and 2022. Her father Mr. William Arnold Bryan has served as a member of the Order of the Rose. Other family members who have participated in the festival include her uncle, Max Hightower, who was an Escort in 1973; maternal grandmother Zelda Hightower, who served on the Order of the Rose Queen's Ball Committee and Queen's Tea Committee; and aunt Julie Hightower Collier, who served as a Junior Hostess for the Queen's Tea in 1966 and Lady-In-Waiting in 1976. “My dad didn’t want to see the dress until it was done at my private rehearsal, so no pictures or anything; he wanted to be surprised. So when I first put it on and was first on stage with it for my summer rehearsal, that was the first time that my dad had seen it. He may have shed a tear … he thought it was gorgeous; he loved it.” While the girls had a lot of say in the dress’ design, there was one very specific request from Dad. “My dad really wanted to put an SMU Mustang somewhere on my dress. My mom and I were kinda like, ‘Eh, I don’t know if that would fit the vibe,’ but Jacob was able to work it in as a special hidden gem. So, it’s a bit of a secret; we actually put a hidden red Mustang underneath my train near the top. PHOTOS BY JAMES FRENCH PHOTOGRAPHY

So no one will really know it’s there unless you flip it over and look, but all of the people who are ‘in the know’ know there’s a little red Mustang to pay tribute to SMU. My dad went to SMU too so he’s a big Mustang fan, and it’s really fun to be here too and have him kind of relive his college days a bit through me.” In the months leading up to the festival, Bryan said her mother, Sarah Hightower Bryan, was an integral part of the planning and preparation. “My mom keeps me in check. After volunteering for over 20 years, she really knows what she’s doing. If I didn’t have her, I might be more nervous, but knowing she is guiding me with her expertise really helps me keep the nerves away,” Bryan said. “She has every detail – every hour – planned and laid out for how that weekend’s gonna go. I have to give all the credit to her, my

‘momager’ – I don’t know what I’d do without her.” Announced to the public at the annual Winter Gala in January, Bryan has taken great pride in her role as Queen. From volunteering to working with local businesses to cutting the ribbon at the annual Azalea & Spring Flower Trail, Bryan has loved every minute of it. “It’s been really special to be an ambassador for Tyler and sharing our mission of promoting the pride of our community, our hospitality, and the history of the rose industry,” Bryan said. For anyone not familiar with the Rose Festival, Bryan said “you just have to see it in person.” “I’ve brought my out-of-town friends to coronations in the past and they walked away amazed and said they could never imagine what it would be like without seeing it,” Bryan said. “There are really no words. It’s such a beautiful event that brings so much tourism to our city and is part of our Tyler tradition. The way it brings the community together is really special.” When it’s all over, the feeling of anticipation is what Bryan says she will miss the most. “When I was little as an Attendant, I bawled my eyes out on that Sunday when it was over. I just could not believe it,” she said. “So it’s going to be weird knowing that my era is over. It’s something I’ve looked forward to for so long, so it’s just going to be weird not having that feeling anymore and knowing it’s over.” Once a little girl picking up leftover roses after the Rose Show, bright-eyed backstage at the coronation and looking up to former Queens, Bryan’s journey with the Texas Rose Festival has come full circle. While she’s not quite ready for her era to end, she knows it’s not really over because her family legacy with the Texas Rose Festival will continue for years to come. ROSE PRINCESS

Conley Jeanette Patricia Cavender

90th annual Texas Rose Festival Princess aims to serve community with grace, humility JESSICA T. PAYNE

jpayne@tylerpaper.com

Texas Rose Festival Princess Conley Jeanette Patricia Cavender has looked forward to the historic festival every year since she was a little girl. Now, as Princess, she hopes to serve her community with grace and humility. Cavender, the daughter of Mr. Clay Courtney Cavender and Mrs. Jacqueline Skeens Cavender, is a Tyler native and junior at Texas Christian University. Since 1933, the Texas Rose Festival has hosted a three-day event to celebrate the role Tyler has in the rose-growing industry. It has drawn tourists by the thousands each year. Centered around the festivities are the Queen

and her court, who wear lavish gowns and costumes inspired by the theme of each year's festival. This year’s theme is “The Story of Film.” Cavender said from serving at the Queen’s Tea to being a spectator, she feels her role in the Texas Rose Festival has come full circle. “Growing up the festival was an event we all looked forward to every year, from serving at the Queen’s Tea to just being a spectator to friends as they participated,” she said. “Now being the Princess, I get to serve my community and give back to a festival that has given me so many wonderful memories.” Cavender said looking back, time flew by from the moment she was named Princess to the time

“Growing up the festival was an event we all looked forward to every year, from serving at the Queen’s Tea to just being a spectator to friends as they participated,” she said. “Now being the Princess, I get to serve my community and give back to a festival that has given me some many wonderful memories.”

of the festival. “It seemed so far away when I was asked late last year, but honestly it has been such a whirlwind of activities, the time has flown by,” she said. Getting to know those participating in the festival and getting closer with members of the court has been one of Cavender’s favorite parts about the Princess journey. “Getting to know and become better friends with all of the out of town Duchesses and Escorts has been amazing,” she said. “During the summer practices we really got to spend time one-on- one with people we may not have ever gotten to know otherwise.” The Texas Rose Festival is known for its elaborate and breathtaking dresses

and Cavender’s has a special meaning. Cavender, a fashion merchandising major, said she had a lot of input in the design. “It’s a nod to my family and the business they built. That being said it is all me – pink, boots, horseshoes, roses, all the things I love,” she said. “Since I am a fashion merchandising major it was a lot of fun getting to help come up with the design and seeing it come to life. From picking fabrics, helping design train details, the process was such a great experience.” “I was able to give a lot of input; it really allowed me to make the dress represent me,” Cavender added.

As for her favorite part about the dress, Cavender said she loves it all. “The color, the uniqueness – there isn’t just one part; I love all of it,” she said. Cavender, both nervous and excited about the festival, said she was excited to see the community come together during the festival day events. “I’m nervous and excited both at the same time,” she said just weeks before the festival week. “I can’t wait for all of the fun events and activities, especially the parade and seeing our community come together.” Cavender expressed gratitude for the memories made through PHOTO BY JAMES FRENCH PHOTOGRAPHY 24

her role as Princess, with both her best friends and new friends. “Being in the Texas Rose Festival with some of my best friends has made for some truly amazing memories,” she said, “while also getting to spend more time with people I didn’t know and seeing how this festival brings us all together.” As a Tyler native, Cavender said she always knew she wanted to be a part of the iconic festival and feels blessed to be part of it all. “As a little girl, I felt like everyone from Tyler kind of looks up to the Queen and Princess and all the older girls in the court,” she said. “So I kind of had always known that I wanted to be involved in the festival when I was in college and it's kind of something growing up in Tyler that you always look forward to.” “I am grateful for the experience,” she said. “I’m grateful for the journey.”

he Texas Rose Festival court, led by its Queen and Princess, aims to give back to the community. It’s such a hallmark of the festival that represents a city with a philanthropic spirit. Queen Laura Elaine Bryan has a heart for philanthropy. During her reign, she set out to serve. As the Chi Omega philanthropy chair at Southern Methodist University, Queen Laura gave back in a big way this year. She donated $1,200 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The announcement was made at the 2023 Escorts Party in July. “This check really means a lot to me. I was so honored that I was able to do something that's great for the community and give back to Make-A-Wish and give back to those children,” Bryan said. “As philanthropy chair for Chi Omega, I’ve spent a lot of time working with Make-A-Wish and grown really close to the organization. It's become something really near and dear to my heart.” Serving others is a contagious trait that is shared throughout the Texas Rose Festival Association and the court. Princess Conley Jeanette Patricia Cavender is involved in numerous volunteer activities. This year, she spent time reading to students at the Junior League of Tyler’s Summer Reading Camp. The four-day

114 Texas Rose Festival | Souvenir Magazine

camp is hosted annually for Tyler ISD students entering third grade. Each day’s activities centered around a “book of the day” beginning with a local celebrity reader, and Princess Conley was one of those special readers. Students got to go home with a copy of the book she read, “Goodnight Rose City.” The Texas Rose Festival also offers scholarships to deserving students in East Texas. At the annual Rose Sunday ceremony in April, Peyton Adams was announced as the 2023 Texas Rose Festival Scholarship recipient. Adams is a graduate of The Brook Hill School and current senior at Texas A&M University. The scholarship was established in 2009 and is awarded by the East Texas Communities Foundation to a Smith County graduating senior or current college student. Additionally, the Texas Rose Festival Strutters support the Tyler Police Foundation and make a monetary contribution to a charity of choice for speakers at the Rose Festival luncheons. In 2022, the Strutters presented a $5,000 check to the foundation. Not to mention, the Texas Rose Festival itself comes together thanks to the efforts of numerous volunteers who spend months and countless hours planning for the festival’s execution. From accessories to graphics to doorkeepers, there is no part of the festival that is made possible without the devoted help of passionate volunteers.

’Embodying the films’ Texas Rose Festival costumes take audience along for ‘The Story of Film’ KATECEY HARRELL kharrell@tylerpaper.com

F

or months leading up to the 90th Texas Rose Festival, hundreds of volunteers collaborated to engineer a production of such grandeur. "This is a very well-oiled machine, and it takes a lot of volunteers to make it run well," Coronation Co-Chair Cassie Hampe said. "It kind of brings everyone together, just like movies." The theme for this year’s festival was "The Story of Film.” The Coronation Committee develops the theme, collaborates with dress and scenic designer Jacob A. Climer, and determines how the court is positioned on stage for the coronation. The Queen's Coronation is a theatrical experience with incredible gowns, staging and story. It leaves audience members of all ages in awe each year. The Coronation Committee decided the most entertaining theme for the audience would be “The Story of Film” – not actresses or characters, but how black and white to modern fantasy movies have progressed. Coronation Co-Chairs Ashley McCain and Hampe brainstormed a few ideas for the theme before meeting with Executive Vice President Coronation Bill Evans and his wife, Lynda. The group discussed how the story would flow and what the dresses would look like and ultimately agreed that the film theme would be the most entertaining for the audience. McCain spearheaded the art-deco staging, reminiscent of the 1940s silver screen. Hampe said they had nearly identical lists when she and Climer compiled potential films. "We picked films that we thought some people would know, that would be entertaining and that you could make a dress to represent it," she said. "The trickiest part is picking a film and then how do you make a dress represent that." Some gowns embodied classics like “Gilda,”“Singin' in the Rain,”“The

coronation Continued From Page 117 Birds” and “Jaws” along with 21st-century movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean,”“The Matrix,”“Harry Potter” and “Hunger Games.” "We start with classics. It's got some film noir pieces in there. We move on to drama, we move on to comedy to family, to musicals to fantasy," she said. In previous years, there was a very traditional, almost regal look to the Rose Festival gowns. Hampe said they still wanted to do that – but with a twist. This year's costumes were theatrical and not typical. Hampe provided a wealth of knowledge as a film major and worked with Climer to determine the costume and stage concepts. "The committee and I talked a lot about the dresses embodying the films, not just a costume from the film or the leading lady," Climer said. "Pulling on the whole film and not just one aspect of the film or one costume is a fun way to approach it." Climer researched all year to birth one-of-a-kind costumes for the Texas Rose Festival. The committee and young women on the court gave information about what they did and didn't like. He considers their preferences on color schemes, shapes and personality types. But it's more complex than coming up with an unwavering representation of the film. Climer juggled different ideas simultaneously to create the designs. Part of his process involved drawing inspiration from a compilation of different ideas, fabrics and luxury fashion brands and taking it to the next level.

Ball gowns and wedding dresses are a dime a dozen, but it’s not every day people see a "wild, fun, fantastic, theatrical costume," Hampe said. Several gowns featuring "tricks," like the “Wizard of Oz” dress, which would first appear in black and white then transform into a colorful masterpiece. Every accessory is a carefully selected Easter egg, paying homage to the film it represents. "We had some wild, crazy dresses that we weren't sure some of these girls would pick to be their dress, and they did, which is a testament to them. They embrace this theatrical costume concept," Hampe said. "When you're taking a film that's an hour and a half long, and you have to represent one dress for it, it does get tricky, but Jacob did a great job." Modern tunes were recognizable to the audience, and many lyrics included a play on words, like the use of "Maneater" by Daryl Hall and John Oates for the “Jaws” dress added to the theatrical performances. "We just thought that was a fun play on words, and so as when you're in the audience as you're listening, each song does have a meaning," Hampe said. There are many great movies from the 1930s up to the present day that only some people know about — the committee meticulously thought out the movie selection to spark interest in the audience. Hampe said that if one person goes home and researches or streams one of the movies highlighted in the 2023 Texas Rose Festival costume lineup, the committee will have succeeded.
