LETTER FROM THE LIBRARY WH E TH E R YO U ARE NEW to town or a lifelong resident, the library is ready to serve you! The mission of the Sammy Brown Library is to improve the lives of the people of Panola County by providing free resources that enhance and contribute to individual knowledge, enlightenment, and enjoyment. These resources include information and entertainment from books, movies, and audios in both print and digital formats. The library also strives to provide technology assistance to the community with free wifi, public access computers, wifi hotspots, and a private video conferencing space. Library programming includes a variety of options with a weekly storytime for kids, STEM workshops for homeschoolers, a lunchtime book club for adults, and a very successful summer reading program. The library had a record setting year in 2023. Materials circulated through the library saved our patrons over $1 million dollars.

Interested in being a Panola County Chamber of Commerce member?

A strong, vibrant, growing community provides valuable resources for its citizens and the Sammy Brown Library is proud to play its part in providing those resources for Panola County. Sincerely,

T H E C I T Y O F CART H AG E , in partnership with Turner Park Revitalization Group, is working to raise $500,000 for the development of a legacy playground and will be placed on 4.0 acres on Earnest Brewster Circle behind the A. L. Turner Community Center in Carthage, Texas. The project will begin with a basketball court with covered pavilion. The 2nd phase will include playground equipment, reading area, and updated restrooms. The park will provide truly inclusive spaces that promote participation, health activity, and social interaction and will be the only of its kind within 60 miles. It will serve our seven surrounding counties with a population of 368,430 (Panola, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Nacogdoches, Rusk, and Shelby County). 10 Winter 2024 • www.panolacountytexas.com

The park will support individuals across the lifespan and will foster nature-based learning and health. Program ideas include walking groups, school-based outdoor learning adventures, nature-based art, cultural awareness and self-help parenting education programs. The park will help other communities champion inclusive play environments with future research that will help inform and improve health across a variety of communities. It is the intent for this park project to be a resource for many Texas cities seeking guidance for how to revitalize their community.

The cost of this project is approximately $500,000. We are also seeking support from our local agencies, businesses, and residents to make this a reality. There are several opportunities for you to select playground equipment which comes along with naming rights. You can make your donation at the City of Carthage or online at PayPal.me/CityofCarthage. If

donating by check, add “Turner Park Revitalization” to the memo line. To donate by PayPal, place your name and address in the “What’s This Payment For?” line. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a letter of donation from the City. Your generosity will last from generation to generation and will be seen throughout the ten counties of East Texas.
