Best Preps salutes student-athletes

A

fter two years of virtual ceremonies, the eighth annual Best Preps Awards returned to an in-person, live format. We are so thankful and blessed to be able to honor student-athletes from East Texas who have excelled at a high level in all areas, and doing so in person made the evening even more special. Coaches from participating schools were asked to submit nominations based on the student-athlete’s contributions athletically, in the classroom and in the community. Nominees were required to be varsity athletes, have a GPA of 3.0 or better and to have verifiable community service or volunteer credentials of 10 or more hours in the current year. The winners from each sport – football, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf, basketball, cross country, swimming, powerlifting, soccer, tennis, track and cheerleading – along with 10 speciality awards, were selected from those nominations. Specialty awards this year included the Lynzee Ford Award for Heart & Desire, Extra Mile Award, Sportsmanship Award, Outstanding Achievement in Academics, Community Excellence Award, Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Inspiration Award, Athletic Director of the Year and Coach of the Year. Congratulations to our honored student/athletes and coaches. We are proud to recognize you, and we thank you for providing a shining example to others in the community through your hard work, dedication and desire to help others. Thank you, also, to our Best Preps sponsors for continuing to support these young people. – Jack Stallard Sports Editor Longview News-Journal jstallard@news-journal.com

EASTMAN CREDIT UNION AWARD FOR FOOTBALL

christopher clodfelter LONGVIEW HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID “Christopher Clodfelter joined our football program during his junior year, which happened to be during the pandemic. He worked extremely hard in the weight room, classroom and on the field to catch up and be a varsity football player. During his senior year, he sustained a knee injury that ended his playing career, but he was still a part of the team by helping with filming and whatever was needed of him.”

Eastman Credit Union Award winner for football, Longview High School’s Christopher Clodfelter, center, is pictured with Sarah Shelton, left, and guest speaker Dr. Alan Moye. (Jessica T. Payne/Longview News-Journal)

“Christopher was the scholastic award winner at our football banquet, as well as being named to the Texas High School Coaches Association academic all-state team. He also received the Frank Lebus and the Alvin Khoury scholarship award. He has been involved with numerous community service areas, including being the co-founder of a community crew that supports our community by providing clothing, food and fundraisers for various organizations. He also volunteers at HealthSpan Ranch, where he supports events that provide funding for different organizations in the community. He helped set up a fundraiser for a local farmers market, which funds are used to help provide local homeless people with food and clothing. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the International Baccalaureate Program, and he plans to attend college and major in Biochemistry Pre-Med, and continue on to Medical School.”

JOSE SANCHEZ LAW FIRM AWARD FOR VOLLEYBALL

emily hill MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID “Currently, she is ranked sixth in her class of 294 members. She manages several extra-curricular activities, including volleyball, National Honor Society, and student council, as well as competing on the UIL current issues and events team. If you know her, she is a very quiet natured girl, but [also] very competitive. She has always been a leader, but by example. This year, she stepped into a leadership role as a captain, and exceeded expectations. She faced uncomfortable situations as a vocal leader, and grew in result.”

Jose Sanchez Law Firm Award winner for volleyball, Marshall High School’s Emily Hill, center, is pictured with Jose Sanchez of Jose Sanchez Law Firm, left, and guest speaker Dr. Alan Moye. (Jessica T. Payne/Longview News-Journal)

“Her senior year, she and her teammates made history by winning the first ever playoff match in school history. She is willing to do the extra work that other athletes aren’t. I strongly encourage the girls in my program that don’t participate in other sports to run track in the offseason. She went through the entire track program for three consecutive years. I knew I could always count on her when matches got difficult because she knew how to overcome. Wherever Emily goes in life, greatness will follow. Her passion and drive to succeed are rare. She truly is one in a million.”

WHAT HIS COACH SAID “Sam is a very good athlete. He is talented, competitive, hard-working, and dedicated. But, the reason I can easily recommend Sam to receive this award is because of his character. He is very honest and trustworthy. He is encouraging and optimistic. He is kind and supportive of his coaches and teammates. He is very good at leading, and getting others motivated to achieve their best. Sam is very active in his church and youth group, and unashamed of his faith in God. He lives his life in a way that exemplifies his relationship with Christ.”

ABC AUTO PARTS AWARD FOR GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

melody chavez GILMER HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID “Melody is a kid that has had to work for everything she has gotten. She works in the evenings many nights after school with her mom. Sometimes until very late.

Yet, she is still up and at cross county at six the next day. Never complains and always smiling. She was a middle of the pack runner in junior high, and now has jumped up as one of our top runners on

varsity. She may not have quite the list of community service hours, but what time she can find, she would help anyone. Not all kids in her situation had this attitude. Absolutely amazing young lady!”

This award is given to a kid that exemplifies what it means to literally give everything you have on the court no matter the circumstances. Jalen earned this award this year. She is the type of kid that you will never have to ask her to play harder or give you more. “Morgan is probably the hardest working athlete I’ve had the privilege to coach, and her drive and intensity is off the charts. She is a four-year starter for our softball team as a pitcher and outfielder, and has been a huge part of our success the last four years. JOHNNY’S FLOORING OUTLET AWARD FOR BOYS SOCCER

Jacob Whatley CARTHAGE HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID “Jacob has started since his freshman year and, after losing a strong senior class last year, he stepped up as the leader and heartbeat of our team and program. Despite being starting goalkeeper his freshman and sophomore year, I asked him to be selfless and move to the midfielder position because of his hard work to maximize his athletic ability and his understanding of the game, and Jacob didn’t blink at this request. Eventually, we put him back in goal because that was what our team needed again. He didn’t blink an eye. He just went to work.”

Johnny’s Flooring Outlet Award winner for boys soccer, Carthage High School’s Jacob Whatley, center, is pictured with Johnny Land of Johnny’s Flooring Outlet, left, and guest speaker Dr. Alan Moye. (Jessica T. Payne/Longview News-Journal)

“Jacob’s fight in goal gave our team energy many times in games. Jacob has amassed 514 saves in three seasons, has earned all-region honors, all-district honors, and has been academic all-district. Jacob leads our program through hard work, commitment on and off the field to being the best version of himself, has embraced being a more vocal leader this season, and helped mentor many young players, including taking great pride in working with our JV goalkeeper and seeing him grow this season. He is the heartbeat of our team, one of the finest young men I’ve gotten to coach, and is truly representative of all the characteristics of a ETVarsity Best Preps Nominee.”

“Izzy is the glue that holds this team together. In my over 30 years of coaching soccer, I have never had a captain that was this valuable to the team. She leads this team in word and deed. No one has worked harder all year, and encouraged every player to reach their potential. Izzy is like having another coach on the field. Her work off the field is just as impressive this year in all organizations she is a member of and her community service.
