ABC AUTO PARTS AWARD FOR BOYS CROSS COUNTRY Malachi Gray

PINE TREE HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID

I am happy and honored to recommend Malachi Gray for this award. I have known Malachi for five years and it has been my pleasure to serve as his cross country coach. During this time, I watched Malachi grow into an outstanding young man who excels in both his academic and athletic pursuits. As Malachi’s coach, I witnessed his work ethic and diligence to excel in academics and athletics daily. Academically, he ranks 111 out of 305 students and his GPA is 3.351. All of this while being in multiple activities and he is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. His diligence in his studies and to his teammates will make him a great addition for this award.

TEXAS BANK AND TRUST AWARD FOR BOYS BASKETBALL Cooper Whiteus

TATUM HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID

Cooper is a very unusual young man for these times. He seems to know what he wants and is willing to make plans and put in work to acheive those things. We do not normally play freshman on varsity, but due to his maturity level, I believe he needed to be stressed by the level of competition in order to get any better. He had a phenomenal year for us at the shooting guard position, starting part of the season averaging nine points a game and providing essential leadership from a verbal and example standpoint. Our team has a lot of respect for this young man. He helped lead us to the District 16-3A championship while always maintaining a positive attitude and hardworking example. We look forward to the next three years of watching such an incredible young man.

ETX VIEW MAGAZINE AWARD FOR SOFTBALL Piper Morton WEST

RUSK HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Piper Morton is both my daughter and my leader on the softball field. I have been at West Rusk for 15 years, and I have not seen a young lady have as much positive impact on her teammates as Piper has.

Piper played volleyball, basketball, and softball throughout high school and excelled in each one earning all-district, all-East Texas, and allstate in every one. However, when it comes to softball she stands head and shoulders above the rest. Piper leads her team both quietly and non-quietly, in ways you would have to see to believe. The thing I am most proud of is the drama-free environment that we have on the team, and Piper is the reason for that. She gets along with everyone and helps anyone that needs it. I find it comforting to have a player that my other players can come to in a time of need. As a coach and a father, I have been blessed to have coachable daughters. This has made my job as a coach and a daddy much easier.

ETX VIEW MAGAZINE AWARD FOR DRILL TEAM Averi Johnson PINE

TREE HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Averi currently is serving as Captain of the Pine Tree Precision Drill Team. Not only is she highly respected by her peers, she is incredibly organized, responsible, dependable, hard working, kind, and empathetic to all. I have full trust in her to keeping practice running if I need to step away for a moment. She arrives early to our 7 a.m. practices everyday to assist others who have questions or need additional help. Even as the captain, Averi continues to work hard to achieve new things. After practice, she stays behind to work on her skills in an effort to continuously improve. Averi is one of two team members who have zero demerits. This is great accomplishment on our team.

OAK HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Emma has always worked very hard to be the best she can be. This includes the classroom, in sports and in life. She is always the last one to leave the discus ring. She practices every weekend on her own time. On her own initiative she started throwing the Javelin. She qualified for the Jr. Olympics this past summer. During this track season she has gone to Louisiana on her own to compete in Javelin. More than anything she lives by example in the school. She will be vocal and let another student know when they are making a wrong choice.

CHICK-FIL-A AWARD FOR BOYS SOCCER Gersain Saenz

SPRING HILL HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID

Once in a while you come across a student athlete that is well self-managed. Gersain loves to serve others outside the field, and was willing to serve his team by playing any position without hesitation knowing it would be for the benefit of the team.

He is not only hardworking on the field, but he applies his intensity to be the best in the classroom as well.

Top three in his class as a senior demonstrates that.

I’m proud to nominate Gersain as a Best Preps nominee.

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Emma is an excellent team player. She was voted captain by her teammates and is an amazing leader on and off the field. She is our field general and keeps the girls organized throughout the game. She took it on herself to carry this team into the playoffs finishing district with five straight shutouts and winning the district championship. Three of those were against the teams that were in the running for the district title. Emma is extremely worthy of this award.

CLEAN CUT ROOFING AWARD FOR BOYS POWERLIFTING CLEAN CUT ROOFING AWARD FOR GIRLS POWERLIFTING

Holden Hodges Kailynn Thomas

WHITE OAK HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID Holden is my Best Preps nominee because of his work ethic and leadership both in the classroom and in an athletic setting. Other members of the powerlifting team are drawn to him

because they see his dedication and he is willing to help them out in any way possible. Holden doesn’t just focus on himself, rather whenever he sees that a teammate needs help he doesn’t hesitate to offer his assistance. Several of his teachers have told me that he has this same attitude and approach in their classrooms. He has committed to join the Lousiana Tech Powerlifting team this upcoming fall.

LONGVIEW HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Kailynn Thomas is my Best Preps nominee for women’s powerlifting because of her positive uplifting attitude, her ability to accept coaching, and her work ethic. Kailynn always comes to the weight room ready to work with a positive mindset regardless of how she might be feeling that day and she encourages and pushes her fellow teammates to do the same. Being a four-sport athlete, it would be easy to assume that with being stretched so thin, her ability to keep up with that workload could lead her to be less committed to some sports. However, she has never provided me with any question in her commitment to all of her athletics endeavors or to her teammates, and would go out of her way to train with me after school on days around her other sport’s schedules.

LONGVIEW HIGH SCHOOL LONGVIEW HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID

Even as freshman, Jason leads the team in both his words and his actions. He is one of the hardest workers on the team. He is one of the first in the water and last out. When he is not competing in the water, he is on the deck cheering on and pushing his teammates to be their best and to do their best.

WHAT HER COACH SAID

I chose Aurora for the Best Preps female swimmer because of her strong work ethic in the classroom, in the pool, and in the community. Even though Aurora is always inundated with school, community, and athletic challenges, she always has time to be a team mate and friend to all. Best part is she always finds a way to get it done with a smile on her face.

EASTMAN CREDIT UNION AWARD FOR CHEERLEADING Katie Stansberry SABINE

HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Over the last several years, I have watched as Katie has matured into a wellrounded young athlete and an exceptional student who possesses great leadership skills. I am impressed with her ability to juggle so much while never seeming flustered or giving less than her best to the task at hand. I have seen her leadership skills develop and flourish the last two years as cheer captain. Every opportunity to lead, she takes. Katie was the first junior to serve as cheer captain and was again selected to serve as captain her senior year. Katie’s leadership and passionate approach inspires others to follow in her footsteps. I have seen her lead by example, participating in the “work” rather than giving orders, and she’s never been one to boast, brag, or abuse the leadership positions she’s earned.

LONGVIEW ORTHOPAEDIC CLINIC ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER Alyssa Armendariz KILGORE

HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Alyssa joined the student athletic training program during the 2021-22 school year. Since then, she has been an integral part of this program. She has an amazing work ethic, and we have never once had to be concerned about her grades or behavior. This past football season was the first season we were able to have girls work football, and she was my first choice to put in that position. She is dependable and able to delegate efficiently when needed. I and my partner only wish we had more like her.

McDANIEL’S QUALITY BODY WORKS AWARD FOR GOING THE EXTRA MILE Jacob Whatley CARTHAGE

HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HIS COACH SAID

Jacob Whatley is my Best Preps nominee because he has consistently shown the work ethic, character, selflessness, and passion that we hope to see in every single student-athlete we coach.

He is a four-year starter and captain at goalkeeper, has 722 career saves (208 this season), has won every regional and district honor you can fathom, and was selected to play in the FCA All-Star Game. For all those accomplishments, he has directly impacted many of his teammates lives through encouraging talks to young players, rides to 6 a.m. practices or buying pregame meals for anyone who needs it, and leading by example through his incredible toughness on the field and incredible dedication in the classroom. Jacob is a truly remarkable young man in every aspect of his life, and I have been absolutely humbled to coach him for the last four years. He has been the absolute heartbeat of my program.

KILGORE COLLEGE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMICS Allison Robinson

SPRING HILL HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID

Allison is an amazing student athlete. The work ethic to succeed at the level that she does is absolutely phenomenal. She is currently No. 2 in her class academically, is heavily involved in Band, is my No. 3 girl on our varsity tennis team, and has more service hours than any other player on my team. While she is not one of our official team captains, I have seen the captains bring her into discussions multiple times and they clearly value her opinion very highly.

I am happy and honored to recommend Dealyn Evans for this award. I have known Dealyn for five years and it has been my pleasure to serve as his track & field coach.

During this time, I watched Dealyn grow into an outstanding young man who excels in both his academic and athletic pursuits. As Dealyn’s coach, I witnessed his work ethic and diligence to excel in academics and athletics daily. Academically, he ranks 8th out of 305 students and his GPA is 3.974. His diligence in his studies and to his teammates will make him a great addition for this award. Dealyn’s athletic accomplishments are amazing. His compassion and charisma are beyond his years and he is well-loved by his peers, as well as all those who had the pleasure of coaching him.

Evans was a first team All-East Texas and second team All State (Texas Sports Writers Association) selection in football after recording 58 tackles, 16 quarterback pressures, four sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown. He has given a verbal pledge to Texas A&M University for football.
