he Ambassadors and Silver Stars are the 'Welcoming Committee' for the Chamber of Commerce. They appear at ribbon cuttings, mid-morning coffee breaks, and any other chamber function. The Ambassadors all work full-time and volunteer their time and talents while promoting area businesses.

The Silver Stars are our retired individuals who want to stay active within our Community and Chamber. They also attend Chamber functions, as well as volunteer in our office and assist with visiting with walk-ins, answering the telephone, and daily office tasks.

CHAMBER HISTORY T he Henderson Chamber of Commerce was organized on February 26, 1926. The first meeting was held in the city's Southwestern Hotel and more than 100 members joined that first night. The records indicate the group pledged $10,000 to cover the first year's operating expenses.

Until 1955, the Chamber maintained an office in the historic Randolph Hotel in downtown Henderson and continued to hold meetings and banquets there until the facility closed in 1969. The Chamber relocated to 205 North Main Street in 1978, then moved to our present office at 201 North Main Street. Since 1926, the Chamber has operated under three names: Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Rusk County Chamber of Commerce, and Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber's mission statement: "It is the role of the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce to serve the

community through business. This service incorporates the promotion of new and existing businesses, as well as industry, community development, unity, education, and communication.

Every year at the annual Chamber banquet awards for the John R. Alford Young Man of the Year, Louise Jacks Woman of the Year, William Ashby Lifetime Achievement, Small Business Excellence Award, and Large Business Excellence Awards are presented. We challenge you to seriously consider your selection for these outstanding awards for 2025. Ambassador & Silver Star of the Year Awards will be bestowed at this year's banquet along with Outstanding First Responders Awards. We salute all of our first responders.

LETTER FROM RUSK COUNTY JUDGE GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME to the Chamber of Commerce Banquet for 2025. I hope everyone has had a great start to the new year.

Rusk County recently saw the 4th District of Texas Judge change as J. Clay Gossett retired and David Hill was sworn in for his first term. Judge Gossett did an outstanding job for the 28 years he served, continuing the legacy of fair and just dealings with everyone who came into the 4th District Court. There is no doubt in my mind that this legacy will continue with Judge Hill.

Rusk County has a golf course development in the early stages in the southern part of the county. This will be a plus for our county. Dream Golf Inc. is in the process of building Wild Spring Dunes adjacent to U.S. 259 just south of Mt. Enterprise. This is designed to be a 36-hole golf resort similar to Sand Valley in Wisconsin. Portions have been blocked off for future residences, overnight cabins, and a comprehensive practice area. Plans

are to open as early as October 2025.

We look forward to the completion of this development and its positive impact on our county.

Rusk County continues to make good decisions regarding the budget. The Commissioners Court committed the last of the ARPA funds to projects that should improve life in the county. We ended up using 1.9 million to help 19 community water systems. We also extended the taxiway at the Rusk County Airport, added a system to better track our air traffic with hopes of adding another 1000 feet to the runway (with help from TxDOT), applied for and obtained a grant for generators at the courthouse house and tax office, and used some funds for updating records preservation in the Clerk's office, in addition to projects already underway.

Rusk County Sheriff John Wayne Valdez continues to improve law enforcement in the county with innovations that help keep us safe. ETCOG helped the county obtain a grant for a communications

tower. With the completion of that project, communication is better for all our First Responders.

LETTER FROM HENDERSON CITY MANAGER GREETINGS FROM CITY HALL: The City of Henderson continues to be a great place to call home! The people in our community are the predominant reason we continue to see people wanting to live, work and play here in the Henderson area. Our leadership of the Mayor and City Council continues to give great vision as to what our residents and business owners want our City to become. Our team of great employees at the City do an amazing job of being public servants and to meet and exceed expectations of the people we serve while carrying out this vision of Council.

Our Main Street and downtown area is still a destination from around the East Texas area and beyond. These businesses work hard and have pride in their buildings and commercial endeavors, and it shows. We continue to build strategies to help develop our downtown even further with an active Main Street Board and Preservation Board. Our incredible parks continue to be a center point of gatherings for our community as well as a place for visitors to stop and spend some time. Our parks are one of our City's best assets containing abundant walking trails

and other features such as lakes, splash pads, dog parks, disk golf, skate park, playgrounds and multiple pavilions.

The Henderson Economic Development Corporation has now opened the new Henderson Innovation Park which is developed across 300 acres of property on the northwest side of Henderson along Loop 571. This business park will be a catalyst for our community for years to come creating even more desired jobs and commercial growth.

The park also creates potential for much needed residential development.

These strategies and functions can only happen because of our long-lasting great relationships and partnerships with many other organizations and entities in this community. The relationship with the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce is one of the most important as we strive to make our community an even more sought-after place of commerce and business. This relationship ensures our stakeholders can communicate and work together to build a growing and lasting community. I would encourage ALL area businesses to be a member of the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce and join in these efforts that make Henderson a great place to live, work and play.

HENDERSON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

t At Henderson I.S.D., we focus on one thing: our students. Henderson's Tradition of Excellence ensures students receive the best education possible. It guides our teachers and staff in fulfilling our vision: empowering all students to achieve their dreams.

The district's roots stretch back to 1877, when the first community school system was established, becoming Henderson I.S.D. in 1889. Today, the district serves approximately 3,300 students and employs over 500 teachers and support staff.

Although much has changed over the past 130 years, our mission remains the same: educating and preparing students to become productive, lifelong learners who value excellence and integrity. Recent initiatives have focused on improving teaching and learning. We have implemented leadership programs and comprehensive frameworks in both math and reading to equip teachers and drive student growth. At the high school, we have invested significantly in state-of-the-art career technology classrooms, including an advanced culinary arts kitchen, commercial welding facilities, and a multi-bed health sciences clinic. From the professional culinary arts kitchen to our modern health sciences clinic, students earn recognized certifications and gain hands-on experience. In 2015, the district opened a new $28.4 million middle school, and Lion Stadium was rebuilt with a $6 million donation from Grady Ash, a 1951 HHS graduate who 14

has also funded millions of dollars in local student scholarships.

Henderson I.S.D. has maintained its highest level "F.I.R.S.T." (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) rating for financial accountability and transparency for over eight consecutive years, once again earning a 100% score in 2024. This distinction reflects the district's commitment to local taxpayers and the community in providing the best education possible for our children.

As we look to the future, Henderson I.S.D. will continue leading the way in preparing students to become productive, lifelong learners who value excellence and integrity.

36TH ANNUAL HERITAGE SYRUP FESTIVAL

F

or a day filled with the most delightful sensory overload make your way out to the 36th Annual Heritage Syrup Festival by making your plans now to attend this famous, fun-filled fall festival. Our festival, the only folk-life festival in East Texas, is always held on the second Saturday of November from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The festival commemorates the early history of Rusk County and sees an influx of nearly 25,000 people annually. Birthplace of the festival, the Depot Museum grounds become a bustling center of activity, featuring craftsmen, folk artists, outstanding food vendors, and fun-filled children's activities. The event's namesake, mule-powered antique syrup mill and cook station are located inside the fenced Depot Museum grounds along with more than 40 unique folk artists demonstrating a variety of pioneer crafts, antique tractors, the much-loved and newly renovated antique carousel, along with musical entertainment throughout the day.

The festivities spread from the Depot grounds to historic Heritage Square, where you can enjoy 10 blocks of festival attractions including 300 shopping vendors, block after block of antique and classic cars, live musical entertainment, cloggers, square dancers, a fun-filled children's area, and a melodrama performed in the Civic Theater building.

A wide selection of incredible food is featured at both the Depot and downtown locations. From gigantic smoked turkey legs or ice cream churned by an antique motor to lamb gyros with a delectable tzatziki sauce to sweet, buttery kettle corn popped right before your eyes, there is an option for every taste.

the festival, hitch a ride on the hayride shuttle sponsored by Full Armor Christian Academy, as it transports visitors between the Depot and downtown locations.

RUSK COUNTY VETERAN SERVICE T he Rusk County Veteran Service office is located conveniently within the Rusk County Courthouse in Henderson.

Out of his first-floor office, long-time Veteran Service Officer Leonardo Gonzalez files compensation, pension, and healthcare benefit claims on behalf of local veterans and their widows.

Rusk County is home to its own Veterans monument. The beautiful black granite monument is located on the grounds of the county courthouse. To qualify for placement on the monument, a veteran must have been born, or have lived, in Rusk County and have received either a General or Honorable discharge.

The Depot Museum is a Rusk County History Museum eum with a Children Children’ss Discovery Center Center. Clustered on five acres are twelves restored structures from Rusk County’s past. A video introduces guests to the early residents of Rusk Country - an intriguing blend of Native American, settlers, and oil-hungry wildcatters.

The Rusk County Historical Commission and Genealogy office is also on the grounds.

The Rusk County Historical Commission, the non-profit support organization of the Depot Museum, has initiated a membership program to fund the Museum’s educational programs and to maintain the historic buildings on the Museum grounds. Memberships are renewable annually, except for Life Membership, which is a one-time gift. Individual-$10; Family-$20; Patron-$100; Benefactor-$300; Life$1000. Donations are welcome, and credit cards are accepted. All members receive free admission to the Museum, Children’s Discovery Center, and in the Museum’s back yard during the annual Syrup Festival.

Benefactor and Life member have their names on a plaque in the museum entry. The education and preservation of our history is our main mission. Each year, 4,500 school children tour our facility or attend Heritage Folk Art Day. We are currently raising funds to build a new Historical Commission building to offer adequate room for the public to come and do research for Historic Markers, genealogy, and history. The building will give us the ability to grow and properly preserve our history.

for visitors flying into the area, it is the goal of airport staff to create a welcoming and comfortable space for incoming pilots and their passengers.

Home to more than 46 private aircraft, the airport offers a well-maintained terminal, runways, taxiways, and fuel systems.

With upgrades to existing hangars and new builds in the airport's future, the growth of the airport is evident.

Alexa McAnally, the airport's hard-working Manager, works closely with the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce, Rusk County Commissioners Court, and the Henderson Economic Development Corporation to not only ensure the growth of the community but also to make sure that the airport stays ahead of this growth. McAnally routinely secures unanimous votes from Commissioners to pursue grant opportunities, ensuring the continued growth of the airport and the expansion of its capabilities.

The Airport uses the state-sanctioned Virtower operational data system. Data compiled under the Virtower system will assist in the expansion and growth of the airport, possibly playing a key role in the approval and completion of the highly-anticipated runway extension project.

In the airport's project line-up, crews are working on new hangars, a taxiway extension, a 1000-foot runway extension, adding instrument approaches that allow the airport to be more accessible, and creating a permanent home of the community's Air-1 helicopter. McAnally has acquired grants to obtain a new AWOS (Automatic Weather Observing System) and renew their ALP (Airport Layout Plan), complete with an obstruction survey.

Airport officials are consistently utilizing TxDOT's 90/10 RAMP grant to keep the airport facilities and airside maintenance in top condition for our based and transient pilots.

For an exciting view into the world of small-town aviation, a visit to the airport is enlightening.
