OK, I admit it. I’m a crazy Christmas lady. I’m named after Santa Claus — yep, not Carlos Santana — and I was born on Christmas Eve. It’s really part of my identity, plus I love all the festivities that surround the holiday season. I put my Christmas tree up before Halloween. The first 60-degree day we have in East Texas is when I start saying “Merry Christmas.” So whenever our annual Holiday Issue of ETX View rolls around, I am always so excited to see the stories we’ll produce for this edition. Inside, you’ll read stories about barbecue on the holiday feast table and sweets that are so artistically beautiful you won’t believe they’re actually edible. More about iconic joints like Stanley’s and Bodacious starting on Page 8, and turn to Page 28 to check out those impressive cakes and cookies by The Pied Piper. There are magical stories throughout this issue, but one that really got me in my feels starts on Page 60. When ETX View planned a fashion shoot with Platinum Designs in Longview, we knew we’d have a backdrop of glitzy holiday decor. What caught me by surprise was the touching story behind the business, co-owned by mother-daughter team Olivia Hill and Robin Baker-Hill. They lost their beloved Oma (Olivia’s grandmother and Robin’s mother) to Alzheimer’s. Now, they keep her memory alive in many ways, including through their

business. That woman absolutely loved to “go all out” for the holidays, and I was so inspired to see how these ladies are keeping her influence so close to their heart. Another fun part of the holiday season is looking at Christmas lights. You can visit etxview.com to view a list of all the bucketlist worthy places you can go to see lights in East Texas, but turn to Page 18 to see how a historic Tyler neighborhood gets in the spirit. From Turkey Trots to Jingle Jogs, there are plenty of ways to get some fresh air and stay healthy this season; more on that on Page 52. There are more fantastic stories throughout this issue, but I’ll let you read those for yourself. Before I go, let me also introduce you to our new ETX View Elite series on Page 70. This is a new series we’re excited to show you, and we’d love for your business to get involved. If you want to be part of the exciting things ETX View is working on or have story ideas for us, please email us at info@ etxview.com. And lastly, happy holidays to all! No matter how you celebrate, we are wishing you well during the most wonderful time of the year. Best wishes,

f you ask someone what they’re most looking forward to during the holiday season, you’ll get a list of different answers. Many will be excited to make memories while spending treasured time with family and loved ones. Others have plans to give back. Some will look forward to holiday shopping deals. One answer will undoubtedly ring true for many though – food. Memories are made gathered around a table which is often home to a holiday feast this time of year. For many

East Texans, their spread includes a Bodacious ham or Stanley’s turkey. These two award-winning barbecue restaurants are making sure East Texans won’t be disappointed and will have full bellies as Thanksgiving and Christmas approach. While Bodacious serves whole turkeys, turkey breast, whole and half hams along with regular menu items, pitmaster Spencer Halling said the turkey breast is among the top sellers. “A fan favorite would have to be the turkey breasts,” he said. “We prepare these by smoking them for three and half to four hours after lathering in our special-made brisket rub.” Halling said an extensive planning process begins at the end of summer for pre-orders that begin on Nov. 1. “Planning begins at the end of summer as we determine the supply from our grocer,” he said. “From there, we open orders the day after Halloween and close them about a week before the holiday.” “Then we map out what will fit on each pit and where and for how long, and then we get to cooking,” Halling said. “Once food is taken off the pit, it is packaged in vacuum seal bags, or in an oven safe bag, and bagged with reheat instructions before it is sent to its final destination and served on a silver platter.” Last year, Bodacious sold more than 85 whole turkeys and 50 hams. Halling said preparing special holiday meals for people is a responsibility in which he takes great pride. Halling said he is humbled by the opportunity to be part of family memories through his food. “When you reflect on the holidays of your childhood, you remember your grandmother’s stuffing, your aunt’s green bean casserole, and your mom’s apple pie,” he said. “For many people, this includes a Bodacious Turkey. We are humbled by the orders we receive each year and that families trust us to provide the staples for their holiday meals.” It’s a responsibility in which Halling takes great pride. “I don’t take it lightly that people trust me to make a key part of their holiday meal. FROM PG. 11 because of the volume during the holidays I dedicate all my time and attention to each turkey and ham that goes on my pits,” he said. “I am proud when the last turkey leaves our store, and I can go home to enjoy my own turkey and a Cowboys win on Thanksgiving Day.” Family time is an important element of the holidays, and at places like Bodacious, they also have a work family they treasure spending time with. “The holiday seasons are a family affair with all hands on deck at Bodacious on Mobberly,” Halling said. “We’re a family-owned business and enjoy the opportunity to spend so much time together throughout the week.” STANLEY’S Located in Tyler and hailed as home to some of the best meat you’ll ever eat, Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar B-Q brings its own unique flavor year-round, including for the holiday season. 12

Kitchen manager Andrew Czop echoes the sentiments of Halling, in that planning is of the utmost importance. “For us to prepare for the holiday season, we have to do a massive amount of planning. We want to ensure our quality and consistency are kept up to the highest standards,” Czop said. “We keep our doors open as well for everyone to gather here and bring their out-of-town folks in to see us.” Czop said a solid crew of dedicated staff members is what not only keeps things moving, but doing so in a way that produces the high quality of flavor and service people have come to expect from the celebrated joint. “To accommodate the amount of holiday sales and our guests walking in the door, we have a lot of moving parts to make it work. Our pit master and pit crew work endless hours to keep everything cooking on the smokers,” Czop said. “Our kitchen staff and hospitality crew are very busy making sure that every | CONT. ON PG. 14

FROM PG. 12 order is treated with care and correctly put together all while giving every person that walks through the door an amazing and fun experience.” Spencer Carl, a Longview native who has been mastering the grill for Stanley’s since September 2019, said his day starts around 4:45 in the morning and doesn’t stop until the work is done. “I get here about 4:45 in the morning to light fires; after the pits get hot I’ll throw ribs on. We’ll cook ribs for about four and half to five hours; pull those off and then it’s time to get brisket going for the next day,” Carl said in a previous interview with the Tyler Morning Telegraph. “So, we’ll trim the briskets, rub them, throw them on the pit – they’ll run all night long for about 20 to 22 hours which is our average cook time for our briskets. We’ll cool those off and then start all over again.” Making great meat isn’t Carl’s only task. He is responsible for all pit functions which include cooking, preparation and maintenance of quality standards, sanitation and cleanliness, training of employees in cooking methods, preparation, portion, and cost control. “It’s hot; it is long hours and early mornings but I 14

absolutely love it. It is 100 percent a labor of love,” Carl said. Carl said it is a big responsibility to be in charge of creating great barbecue at a world famous barbecue joint and he is proud to be part of the team. “It brings a great deal of pride and responsibility; it is something I think about almost daily. Stanley’s has been around for a long time and has a great many fans,” he said. “I’m happy and thankful to be a part of the team at Stanley’s.” This holiday season, Stanley’s will offer ham and turkey by the pound, and it will also sell turkey and brisket balls. The festive menu items consist of cream cheese and meat with a pecan crust for dipping into with a cracker. “They are very popular during the holiday season,” Czop said. November and December are always a busy time of year for the Stanley’s team. In the two days alone before Thanksgiving last year, Stanley’s sold over 68 turkey breasts which totals 204 pounds, more than 146 slabs of ribs, eight whole hams, 37 turkey balls, and 31 brisket balls. Czop said it is an awesome feeling to be given the gift

of being part of people’s lives – outside the restaurant walls. “We are always more than grateful; we are honored every time someone comes into our restaurant,” he said. “We are so very proud of the community we have around us, we have had regular customers coming in for decades and love being a part of their lives.” “This time of year is all about gathering with those you love, so we are so excited to see everyone come in and share this time with us as well,” Czop said. “It is a magical thing to have our food come into people's homes as they share their time together.” IN YOUR KITCHEN For those who enjoy making a holiday turkey at home, Halling suggests prepping a simple brine for the turkey to rest in which gives it the extra flavor it needs. It also helps tenderize the meat. Bodacious and Stanley’s also both have seasonings and sauce to help give your meat some flavor.

AWARD WINNING Bodacious and Stanley’s each have their own storied history and hold high reputations in their communities, the state, and beyond – ever since their beginnings decades ago. The original Bodacious Bar-B-Q opened in 1965 and since then, customers have been using the term, "Bodacious" to describe the one-of-a-kind meat, prepared with a blend of fresh spices and slowly smoked using woodburning pits. In addition to the flagship location, Bodacious operates 15 locations across East Texas. The restaurant was started by Roland Lindsey, who passed away in 2018, but his family carries on the legacy today. The Mobberly Avenue restaurant was first featured in Texas Monthly in 1969, and it’s been featured on the Top 50 list multiple other times over the years. Bodacious has also earned Texas Historical Commission’s Texas Treasure Business Award, Southern Living’s Top 5 BBQ places in Texas, Locals Love Us No. 1 BBQ and Best of East Texas. Stanley’s is the oldest mom-and-pop barbecue joint in Tyler and has been family owned and operated since 1958. The site where Stanley’s sits today has long been home to barbecue, as it was a barbecue restaurant for two previous owners before being bought and renamed by J.D. Stanley in the late 1950s. Nick and Jen Pencis took over the business in 2006 after Stanley’s death. The Pencises have kept the recipes and methods alive, as well as adding their unique flair to the joint. They have been named “One of the Best BBQ Joints in the World” by Texas Monthly, had their story published in David Gelin’s book “BBQ Joints: Stories and Secret Recipes from the Barbecue Belt,” and Daniel Vaughn’s “Prophets of Smoked Meat” published by Anthony Bourdain. In addition to being included in Texas Monthly’s 50 Best BBQ joints five consecutive times, Stanley’s has earned multiple Locals Love Us awards, earned best ribs by Texas Monthly for multiple years in a row when they gave out awards during their BBQ Fest, awarded by Tyler Morning Telegraph and local radio stations for numerous things like best bar, best sandwich, and more. 208 South College Avenue in Tyler is home to the Mellors, transplants from California who are loving life in the historic Azalea District. It’s a neighborhood like no other, in the words of the couple who moved to Tyler in 2021. The spirit of the district really comes alive during the holiday season when homeowners like the Mellors decorate their homes for the Azalea District Trail of Lights. Each December, local residents deck the

Not only is the Trail of Lights a way for homeowners to showcase Tyler’s historic charm and Texassized hospitality, it’s a contest – with exciting incentives. Along with the chance to earn the title of “Best DIY,” “Most Spectacular,” or “Best Reason for the Season,” winners will receive incredible prizes like gift baskets filled with various gift cards for local shopping, tickets to shows and more. Susan Travis, vice president of tourism/servicing at Visit Tyler, says the initiative continues to grow every year. “I’ve been working with the homeowners in the Azalea District for many years with our annual Azalea & Spring Flower Trail event, but this year will be our eighth year for the Azalea District Trail of Lights and it’s just gotten better and better each year,” Travis said. “The homeowners get excited about decorating and they love the chance to possibly win one of the valuable prize baskets made possible by our generous donors.” Travis said locals enjoy going through the district and seeing the lights and decorations, but the Trail of Lights also gives out-of-town visitors something to look forward to during the holiday season as well. Travis expects more homeowners to participate this year because the Azalea District residents are so good about spreading the word to new residents and getting them excited about participating also. The Mellors got involved for the first time in 2022 and can’t wait to do it again this year. “This has been the best experience,” Ashly said. The family not only loves this kind of thing, but they are ecstatic to live in a neighborhood where these sort of activities help build community among the residents. The Mellors love holidays. Halloween is admittedly their favorite – as the family dresses in themed costumes every year and transforms their home into a haunted land – but Christmas comes as a close second. “We’re ‘Halloween people,’ but | CONT. Standing on their front lawn, this magazine writer was in awe at the classic look the Mellors pulled off for the 2022 season. Silver bells hung from the stucco structure’s beautiful rounded archways on the front porch, but if you knew Ashly, you’d know those bells weren’t what they seemed. The do-it-yourself queen created the bells herself, starting with terracotta flower pots. She spray painted them a lovely silver, drilled a hole in the center of the bottom through which she attached a rope with a red ornament at the end. To top off the look, Ashly added pine greenery and red ribbons. Hanging upside down and in a cluster of five, the pots were transformed into beautiful bells that were a centerpiece

for the home’s outdoor decor. Lighted garland and wreaths were hung on key areas of the home’s exterior, keeping the decor classic and elegant. The 1932 home is a Tyler historic landmark and also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is categorized as Spanish Colonial Revival and known as the Saleh-Witt House, which is said to be one of the first built in Tyler as the Spanish Colonial style, which was popular in California. The home has been well-maintained and underwent some renovations in 2008, but trust the historic integrity of this 1930s home remains, with original art-deco light fixtures still in-tact, high ceilings, oak floors, arched doorways, built-ins, and all the charm you’d expect from a home in the Azalea District. A pencil tree filled with coffeethemed ornaments shines as natural light from the home’s large windows beams in. he holidays are a time for magic and miracles, and Lara Plasencia, owner of The Pied Piper Cakes and Bake Shoppe, is making sure they both happen. Ever since Plasencia was a little girl, she had three loves – spreading kindness to others, making everything she touched beautiful, and creating an apple pie as delicious as her grandmother’s. A baker and artist at heart, Plasencia started out as a mural artist, creating her magic through paint. However, she longed to fulfill her dream of creating magic through baking. “I knew that someday, if I really put my mind to it, I could tie all my passions together with a big beautiful bow, creating goodness and magic at the same time – I just had to figure out how,” she said. That day happened on June 1, 2019 when Plasencia fulfilled her first official order as The Pied Piper, her bakery based in Lindale. Not long after, Plasencia began to see the miracles start to happen through her baking. COVID-19 came and shocked the world, and it seemed like everything went dark. However, Plasencia was determined to be a source of light during a difficult time and bring happiness to others through her work. “People still wanted to celebrate things, they just had to do it in small, intimate gatherings – it brought people’s focus back to their families,” she said. “It was actually a really beautiful time to start a bakery and get to make people feel special and noticed in a world where that feeling was hugely in need.” “It was also a blessing that I got to start out small when the world was much slower, and pick up speed as the world began to open back up,” Plasencia said. “Once I grew enough in my technical skills, I knew I was ready to start incorporating the kindness aspect.” Part of that ‘kindness aspect’ was making sure each piece she worked on | CONT. I love the tiny details that make everyone unique,” she said. “So I not only inquire about a desired theme, but why this special person likes this theme so much – what are their favorite parts of it? It’s these tiny touches that makes it truly unique to them, makes them feel special, and that’s what it’s all about for me.” Plasencia said putting her heart into her work brought her clients who needed that little touch of magic. “As it turns out, the more you’re open to making a difference, the more that opportunities arise to help you make it happen,” Plasencia said. “And before I knew it, I had my three desires – baking, art, and kindness.” That kindness continued to create miracles when Plasencia got involved with Give Kids the World Village (GKTW), a magical place where critically ill children and their families can go for one week cost-free, to get away from doctor appointments, stress, and the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. Plasencia said through the nonprofit, the children get swept away to a whimsical land for fun, laughter, and happiness, all while still being close to medical attention, if needed. “This cause is very close to my heart. It was started by a man with the same heart for people and the same whimsical imagination that I have,” she said. “The more I found out about it, the more I fell in love with his mission, and knew I had to be involved somehow.” “For some of these families, this trip is their first and last trip together, which is why GKTW strives for each visit to be nearly perfect,” Plasencia said. “There is ice cream 24/7, characters, rides with wheelchair access, themed weeks, costumes, activities, guest talent shows – it’s truly amazing.” With every purchase made at The Pied Piper, Plasencia said a percentage “goes to giving these families the most beautiful gift they could ever ask for – the gift of each | CONT. I believe our sole purpose on this planet is to find our unique gifts, get great at them, and then share them with as many people as we possibly can to make this world a better place,” she said. “Or in my case, ‘bake’ the world a better place – it’s all about the love. “It’s honestly what makes our journeys all worth it,” Plasencia said.

PUMPKIN PIE BAKING TIPS

As a holiday gift to readers, Plasencia shared her best tips for families to make their own holiday magic with the perfect pumpkin pie – that not only tastes delicious but looks beautiful, too.

1.

Always chill your dough. Chill it before you roll it out, and then once you get it in the pan; chill it again for about 15 minutes before baking.

2.rolling Add some cinnamon to your flour before out your dough. It adds that little bit of

warmth that people will notice, but not be able to guess.

3.

Substitute ½ your white sugar for brown sugar in your filling. Again it creates that little bit of added warm and fuzzy for the holiday season.

4.

Use an egg wash on your crust before baking. It gives it that beautiful warm golden color.

5.

Have fun with it! Let your inner artist shine through and get creative! Whipped cream, nuts, or grab mini cookie cutters and cut fun autumn shapes out of leftover pie crust, and place them on top of your edges before baking. Don’t forget the egg wash! etxview.com | November/December 2023

or the women of the East Texas chapters of The Junior League, there’s one clear mission: To serve. Today’s Junior League is a place with open arms welcome to all women, whose biggest priority is coming together to help the community. In East Texas, the Longview and Tyler chapters are exceptionally proud of the League and the work they do to make a difference in their communities. The local chapters are made up of women like Haley Chapman, who serves as Junior League of Longview’s

executive vice president and treasurer. Chapman says the League’s impact can be seen through the noble work its members are doing. “It's so much more about the community, and what we are doing in the community, than it is about the League… The League is a vessel to do the work,” Chapman said. Chapman moved to Longview for work and, like many, got involved with the organization when looking for a way to give back.

“The Junior League was that for me – the starting point to get to know the community, other likeminded women, and find where I could serve,” Chapman said. The Junior League chapters not only make a direct impact on the community, but also empower their members by helping them develop civic leadership skills, then giving them the tools to put their unique talents to work in the community. Nicole Robbins, 2023-2024 President of The Junior League of Tyler, said members have been hard at work training, serving and planning to make this year the best one yet for the local chapter. With a theme of “Serving to Make Lasting Impacts,” Robbins hopes each member finds their passion and “why” they feel called to serve. “Service is defined as the action of helping or doing work for someone. Our mission statement says that we are a group of women coming together to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve our communities. These are all acts of service,” Robbins said. Like Robbins, Hughes said she implores her fellow League members “to lead with grace – with empathy and inclusion – making others feel welcome along the way.” The Junior League of Tyler has 165 active and provisional members and 407 sustaining members. The Longview chapter, led by 2023-2024 President Jessica Hughes, has 70 active members and 250 sustaining members. Both the Longview and Tyler chapters operate on the same foundational principles of the international organization, yet each chapter uniquely stands alone, with the creativity and freedom to host their own events, fundraisers, and service within their community.

League members are excited to host the shopping event, set for Nov. 29-Dec. 2, in a brand new location this year – the recently unveiled W.T. Brookshire Conference Center. Robbins said there is a fabulous roster of events this year, beginning with a preview party Nov. 29, private shopping Nov. 30, a brunch with a special guest speaker on Dec. 1, Girls Night Out on Dec. 1, Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 2, and of course the market itself, which will be held Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. Merchants at the market will showcase antiques, artwork, gourmet foods, jewelry, seasonal decorations, housewares, adult and children’s clothing, gifts and more. The Tyler event is synonymous with the League chapter with many looking forward to it each year, as it draws in close to 10,000 shoppers throughout the weekend. To prepare for the mainstay event, League members spend countless hours preparing for months well ahead of the holiday season. 38

“... Those ladies are up there hours upon hours preparing. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears go into it but at the end of the day, it’s all to raise that money to give back to our community, and that’s worth every moment,” Robbins said. The event raises critical funds that help financially support local nonprofit agencies and community programs within Smith County. The Junior League of Longview is excited to unveil a holiday shopping event this year called Christmas in the Pineywoods, which will take place Nov. 17-18. The inaugural two-day extravaganza is expected to draw tons of attendees who will be ready to “shop ’til they drop.” “Our event chair, Bethany Nolan, has been wanting to host a holiday market for years,” Hughes said. “This year I knew it was the perfect timing for her to take over and make this dream a reality. She has been collaborating with other Junior League chapters who host large holiday events and has put so much hard work into this event. I’m so excited to see it all come together.”

On Saturday, ticketholders can expect one day filled with shopping, live entertainment, how to decorate a Christmas tree, and more. The event will be held at Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview. “This is sure to be a fun holiday event while raising funds that the League will put right back into the community through our programs and volunteers,” Hughes said. “We are most looking forward to bringing a holiday market of this size to the Longview area community that will raise funds that go directly back into our community.” Hughes said The Junior League of Longview is proud to give back to the community, and supporting events like Christmas in the Pineywoods supports those efforts. This will be the JLL’s main fundraiser for the year. The holiday shopping event will feature more than 40 specialty boutiques and merchants from all over the state and country showcasing season decorations, housewares, artwork, gourmet foods, gifts and so much

Making an impact As a service organization for women, there is a strong emphasis on encouraging young girls in the community that is no better displayed than during Girl Empowerment and Girl Power, which are similar events the Longview and Tyler chapters host respectively for young girls in the community. At these events, young girls are encouraged and taught confidence through various activities and speakers. Each Junior League chapter is free to assess and address any issues they feel are plaguing their community. The Longview chapter reassesses this every three years to find what the League members believe to be the most pressing issue within the community. “At the Junior League of Longview we live in the moment. | CONT. FROM PG. 39 according to our community’s most pressing needs,” JLL states. “Our work is always evolving, and that keeps us on our toes, striving for progress, and preparing to take on whatever comes next.” Chapman said for the last few years, the focus has been on women and children in poverty. “We have identified poverty as the most pressing issue in our community right now, and we are helping local women take action to resolve it,” JLL states on its website. “... Our goal is to help Longview women develop civic leadership skills through the work they do, then put those talents to work in the communities that need it. Our current focus of poverty gives women opportunities to grow, while positively impacting the communities where they live and work.” The Junior League’s work centers around improving its local communities through effective action and leadership. Hughes explained the Junior League offers so much more than local volunteering opportunities. “Our League of leaders creates real change by advancing social activism-focused projects that directly benefit the communities of Longview. By giving women the tools to lead, educating them about their communities’ needs, and helping them put their unique brand of creativity and skill to work, the Junior League of Longview is making a big impact on Longview,” JLL states. From fundraising events as well as others throughout the year, both East Texas chapters also give back to the community through grants. Local nonprofits can apply for grants of various sizes and the Junior League selects organizations to partner with to give not only a monetary donation but also send League members as volunteers. “That is what is really unique about the Junior League is we don’t just give money grants; we also place a trained volunteer with every grant we give,” Robbins said. Since they were first founded, each chapter has given back millions of dollars to numerous organizations and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to better the community. And active members aren’t the only ones giving back to the community. In Longview, for example, sustaining members alone give away up to $35,000 in scholarships to girls graduating high school or women going back to school each year. “We want to leave behind a better world than what we have today, and that takes collective effort. … We all bring so many different things to the table and collectively can accomplish so much more than you could if you were doing it on your own,” said Madeline Claiborne, who is currently serving as vice president communications of the Longview chapter. To the League women, it is also about “modeling leadership skills to a younger generation,” Hughes said. Over the years, The Junior League has grown and evolved and continues to strive for progress. Today’s League members are all different types of women with different backgrounds, all committed to bettering their community and empowering the next generation for service. The League members say there is always more work to be done, more help needed, and more opportunities to make an impact in East Texas. The empowered women of the Junior League of Longview and the Junior League of Tyler invite you to get involved. Visit https://longview.jl.org or www. juniorleagueoftyler.org for more information. 40

our first instinct might not be to head to a small Texas cattle town to find some holiday cheer, but Cuero challenges that preconception. The town formed around the Chisholm Trail cattle route during the mid-1800s, but these days folks tend to gather along the trail of lights in the Cuero Municipal Park during the city’s annual Christmas in the Park event. The Christmas tradition began in 2000 and has grown to include over 250 holiday themed light displays that sparkle across the park each year. Beginning the Monday before Thanksgiving and continuing through New Year’s Day from 6 to 10 p.m., attendees are invited to drive through winter scenes and wonderlands, follow Santa and his reindeer as they take flight, or watch Old Man Winter make intricate snowflakes all from the comfort of one’s car. Santa and his reindeer fly over Lakeside Knoll while his elves are busy with gifts around the corner. When driving under the 250 snowflakes in the trees, organizers say you can also see the Toy Soldiers Marching Band.

New attractions include a poinsettia archway, oil derrick with snowflakes, a tree sculpture and many more. Highlights include the 17-piece nativity, flag, paddlewheel boat and more. This fun is available all for free, although donations are welcome. While Christmas in the Park is a really huge event, Angie Cuellar, the executive director of Cuero’s Chamber of Commerce, said the Christmas spirit doesn’t end there. “The second weekend in December is our Christmas in downtown,” she said. “That’s when they transform the downtown into a kind of winter wonderland.” Do some last minute Christmas shopping in December, when stores are open late until 8 p.m. You can even enjoy hot chocolate on Thursday nights that month. You may also find some last minute goodies at the farmers market that weekend or hop in an old fashioned carriage for a ride about town. | CONT. FROM PG. 45 And while you’re downtown, don’t forget to stop at the Cuero Pecan House and Café. The family-owned establishment began as a seasonal “nuthouse,” processing, shelling and selling local pecans. In 2003, however, Annette and Erwin Rath decided to expand the shop and began offering homemade pies, cookies, casseroles and other goodies. Their food has brought loyal fans from San Antonio, Austin and Houston, said Anthony Rath, who helps his parents run the store. They’ll come with coolers that they fill with the frozen casseroles and various pies, but the real star of the show is the shop’s pecan pie. “It’s not a normal crust,” said Annette Rath. Every crust is made by hand and includes a secret ingredient – pecan meal. “This is what makes the pie unique,” she said. The pecan meal gives the homemade crust a nutty flavor that perfectly complements the gooey, buttery filling. The restaurant recently expanded again and opened 46

Stop in to taste their famous pecan pie and leave with a cooler full of their other treats or grab a bag of candied pecans to enjoy as you take in the 30-foot, decorated Christmas tree downtown. If you’re feeling a bit “bah humbug” about all the crowds outdoors, pop inside Classy B’s, where the vibe is anything but “humbug.” Brooke Jackson opened the seemingly simple boutique with her mother in July 2021, but there’s far more to the store than meets the eye. Keeping the Magic Alive THROUGH CUSTOM DECOR BUSINESS, MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO CARRY ON LEGACY OF SHARING ‘HOLIDAY JOY’ S T O RY B Y S A N TA N A G A L L A C H E R PHOTOGRAPHY BY LES HASSELL

ora Lee Gough “went all out” for Christmas. From handmade stockings to decor in every room, her hands touched every inch of the house to deck the halls for the holidays. Dora passed away on Oct. 5, 2017 from Alzheimers, but her legacy and love for the holidays will live on for years to come thanks to the women in her family. Dora’s daughter Robin Baker-Hill and granddaughter Olivia Hill, of Longview, are the owners of custom decor business Platinum Designs, where they draw inspiration from the woman who started the tradition of holiday extravagance. “Christmas was always a big deal, all my life growing up with my mother,” Robin said. “She had a Christmas open house every year where everybody would get all dressed up, sit around a big table in the dining room with a spread of food, and decorate the tree together. My mother loved to entertain..” Dora handmade “the most beautiful velvet

stockings” and would decorate every room to be Christmas-themed. “From changing out pictures to Christmas shower curtains, bedspreads, and even toilet paper, she went all out,” Robin said, noting her mother was that way for every holiday. “It was always a production.” Olivia added, “She made the homemade apple cider from scratch, she had the little villages – she did it all.” “And on Christmas Day, if you didn’t have a place to go, you were welcome at my mom’s house. She wanted to make sure no one was ever alone during Christmas,” Robin said. But Christmas for Dora wasn’t over after Christmas Day. The day after Christmas, Robin said her mother would cook 40 pounds of chili and invite everyone over. “Everybody would bring their leftover desserts and we’d have that with my mother’s homemade chili,” Robin said. “She did it for decades.” | CONT. Keeping the magic alive

Olivia’s love for her grandmother, or “Oma,” is synonymous with her love for Christmas and serving others. “She was my everything,” Olivia said of her Oma, whom she was a caregiver for. “She was the light on this earth.” Olivia remembers as a young girl how her Oma would always make her feel special, especially during the holidays. “She’d have her Christmas parties and she’d let me play hostess in my little Christmas dress and answer the door,” Olivia said. “When she’d have gatherings with her friends, they would stack the Yellow Pages on a chair, brew a pot of decaf, pour some in a coffee cup, let it cool and give it to me, just to let me sit on top of those phone books in a circle with them at the table so I wouldn’t be left out.” It was her Oma who taught Olivia how to handle Christmas ornaments. | CONT. Through Platinum Designs, Olivia leans on her Oma’s love for the holidays and uses that as fuel to keep going. Plus, it’s Olivia’s way of spreading that Christmas magic to others. “I try to keep that spirit alive, because if I can be a fraction of who my Oma was, I’d be doing great,” Olivia said. When Olivia stages a home or creates custom decor or trees for her clients, she hopes to make them feel as special as her Oma made others feel during the holiday season. “When I'm designing, I hold myself to a higher standard than most people. I’m really hard on myself when I’m making it because I want it to be perfect. And the reason for that is I want everybody to have that piece where they walk in and they have that Christmas joy my Oma gave me as a kid,” Olivia said. If her Oma were to see her now, Olivia said she would be tickled and so proud. “She is so much behind what Platinum is. If it weren't for Oma, I don’t think Platinum would exist,” said Olivia, who branded her company in purple to honor her grandmother, as it is the color for Alzheimer’s awareness. “Olivia has my mother’s heart and passion for the holidays and for taking care of people,” Robin said. “She is like my mother in so, so many ways. I know my mother sees that in her and is looking down on her with pride. That woman would be so incredibly proud of Olivia for everything.”

Thank You DORA LEE GOUGH'S memory and love for Christmas lives on.

In each issue of ETX View, we are fortunate to have a number of supporters who help us bring our fashion shoot ideas to life. For the Holiday Issue, we wanted to do something extravagant that would help get our readers in the holiday spirit. We teamed up with local business co-owners Olivia Hill and Robin Baker-Hill at Platinum Designs, a custom decor company that specializes in custom Christmas trees. We were so excited to partner with this mother-daughter duo because the trees made by artist Olivia are simply beautiful. Once they welcomed the ETX View team into their home, we learned they also had a powerful message to share about carrying on a generational love for Christmas and serving others. While each fashion spread is intended to be fun and show off local fashion and jewelry, we also aim to share a story that resonates with our readers. Olivia herself was our beautiful model for the day, alongside her handsome beau William McWhorter. The couple looked stunning in each outfit, provided by our friends at The Dress Co. and The Tuxedo Co. William was especially excited to wear the double-breasted black coat with satin trim, and we have to say, he looked dapper! Olivia was gorgeous in both red numbers. In reality, it may have been a warm September day in Texas, but these two looked like they were ready to go to a holiday ball and dance the night away. Our friends at Jim Bartlett Fine Jewelry trusted us with the iciest of jewels that complemented the look so well. We want to give a special shout out to Amy Canton from Jim Bartlett who was on site with us for the shoot and helped us pick just the right pieces for each outfit. Thank you to our ETX View team members who work so hard to put this together. Your brilliant ideas always turn out so amazing on these pages. If you are interested in sponsoring our bi-monthly fashion shoots or want to provide clothing or a venue, we would love to hear from you. | CONT. FROM PG. 64 Platinum Designs, handling all the financials and orders, while Olivia is the artist, creator and designer. While the pair offer services year-round, September through December are their busiest seasons due to fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and, of course, Christmas. Olivia’s specialty is creating custom Christmas decor, which all started one very late night – and early morning. The tree featured in the scenes of this holiday fashion spread is what started it all. The tree itself is nearly 30 years old, and in 2020, Robin decided she wanted to revamp it and redo it from the blue and silver theme it had. Olivia offered to do it, but she says her mother replied, “Oh honey, I’m gonna pay somebody who knows what they’re doing.” “It was nothing against me, but she just really wanted a showstopper piece and of course I’d never done anything like that before, at the time,” Olivia said. 66

November/December 2023 | etxview.com

So the two went and bought some supplies and had hired a professional to come in and redo the tree. Once they got home with the supplies – and after her mother had gone to bed – Olivia couldn’t help herself. She got a creative spark and started to go all out – Oma-style! – on the tree. “It was around midnight, and I didn’t get done and go to bed until after 5 a.m.,” Olivia recalled. “I completely stripped the tree and redesigned it all – silver and gold.” Robin woke up and saw the tree and was in awe. From there, she encouraged Olivia to start a business and partnered with her to help with the business side of things. In 2021, the pair had their first full season and since then, Platinum has received numerous local awards and continues to grow. Platinum offers a variety of services and can make any vision come to life – whether it’s extravagant, simple, big, small, or somewhere in between. They are willing to travel when available and offer services yearround. For more information, visit platinumdesigns.co .

WORKOUT ANYTIME

W

orkout Anytime, Tyler’s newest family owned workout franchise, is the joint endeavor of a newly reunited brother/sister duo, Wendy and Joey Lockett, of Jacksonville, Texas, and Gilberto Gonzalez Ramos of Mexico City. Recently, Wendy embarked on a heartwarming journey of rediscovery when, after being separated their entire lives, she met her longlost brother, Gilberto, for the first time in March of 2022. Their mother and his father had parted ways on less than amicable terms, keeping the siblings apart. However, when the opportunity to bridge this gap arose, they embraced it wholeheartedly. Following the reunion, Wendy and Gilberto decided to embark on an entrepreneurial venture

together. After doing the research and deciding to take a leap, they landed on Work Out Anytime. They felt that it offered a unique and refreshing atmosphere, distinct from the typical, cookie-cutter gyms. The franchise’s exceptional support and their experience touring established locations cemented their decision. Their vision for this endeavor is clear: to create a positive addition to the community, offering a familyfriendly atmosphere where customers eagerly anticipate their visits. They aim to provide not just a gym that fulfills fitness needs but an environment that promotes a healthier lifestyle, where customers look forward to their daily visits. The gym is set to open its doors in November of this year.
