Educators, parents in East Texas teach invaluable life lessons

Dear Readers, ne of the many benefits of living in East Texas is it's a great place to raise a family with quality school systems.

For our Family and Education issue, we highlighted a number of educators and parents, and you’ll also find several family activities to add to your bucket list this summer.

In our feature story beginning on Page 8, you’ll meet Alex and Morganne Short, who are raising and homeschooling their four children while building a microgreens business out of their home. The children learn patience by watching their parents take a tiny seed and continuously care for it until it becomes a microgreen. Among the life lessons, the children learn the importance of hard work and see they can do whatever they set their minds to.

Featured on our cover is Musa Abdeljaber, who desperately wanted to be like his classmates at Pine Tree Primary and eat the school lunches. Because 5-year-old Musa is Muslim, his family avoids eating pork products. His mother Ruwan Alkam was able to work with the nutrition director and have the menus notate when they include pork. The change was made districtwide, benefiting not just Musa, but many others with specific diet requirements.

We admire Ruwan’s determination to make this powerful change happen. It is inspiring to see someone fighting for inclusivity and being a voice for others. She told us she wants her children to be proud of who they are and proud of their ethnicity and religion, and we agree that’s an important lesson to learn.

After COVID-19 kept us stuck at home for so long, we’re even more excited to have a fun summer. We created a list of some of our favorite activities, starting on Page 88, that will keep kids busy and also stimulate their minds.

Another option is to take one of Beth Nelms’ cookie classes. Nelms owns Nana B’s Cookies in Longview and helps children and adults learn to bake and decorate cookies. And yes, they do taste amazing.

Among the stories in this issue, we had the chance to sit down with Dr. Brigham Willis, the founding dean of UT Tyler’s new medical school. We have no doubt the first class of 40 students and future classes will be in good hands with Dr. Willis.

I wish I had space to tell you more about each of the people and organizations we highlighted in this issue, but I’ll let you find out the rest for yourself. Sit down, take a breather and flip through the pages – we think you’ll really enjoy reading this issue.

A

Tyler homeschooling family living in their 1931 Azalea District house is utilizing a business venture to promote healing, further educate their children and connect with the community.

Alex and Morganne Short recently created Azalea Greens, a homebased business growing and locally selling microgreens. It all began with the couple’s desire to provide fresh, nutritious food for their family of six.

Stay-at-home mother and designer Morganne Short and her husband Alex Short, a former engineer, first became interested in the benefits of microgreens, a nutrient dense food, when Alex experienced health problems after the family relocated to Tyler from California four years ago. The family had unknowingly moved into a house that had mold, and Alex began to develop health issues.

After an urgent care visit turned to a hospitalization, Alex subsequently consulted with two separate primary care doctors, a pulmonologist for his lungs, an allergy doctor, an ENT doctor, and an integrative health practitioner. But no one had answers.

“Finally, two applied kinesiologist chiropractors provided treatment and detox answers,” Alex said. “…

My own research included approximately 15 books, 500 hours of podcasts over a three-year journey. I explored diets and healthy food options which is where microgreens came into the picture.”

The tender, immature greens can have up to six times more vitamins and antioxidants than the fully grown plant, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

So the Shorts learned to supply their own microgreens, realizing they can grow them quickly from their own home, Alex said.

Alex’s health is improving in stages, he said, and attributes microgreens as one of the steps in his healing journey.

“It turns out that microgreens help provide an effective healing nutrient dose,” Alex explained.

Among their health benefits, microgreens add nutrients to recipes and lend themselves to versatile food preparation. They have a variety of uses, including in salads as a topping or even as a replacement for lettuce. They can add flavor, texture and brightness to nearly any dish.

| CONT. FROM PG. 13 “Seedlings are then moved inside our house where they germinate and are harvested. We use 4-foot wide utility racks containing six tiers with grow lights. We use 30 trays for the 10-day growth cycle,” Alex said.

“The entire microgreen process can be methodically done indoors easier than in an outdoor garden.

Growing outdoors or even in a greenhouse has more unpredictable variables, and we plan our homeschooling around a predictable growing schedule.”

The business lends itself to play a part in the Shorts’ homeschooling curriculum.

“We want our kids to learn skills and develop an entrepreneurial mindset versus an employee mindset,” Alex said, noting the children often get involved in the process and get excited about “exploring, being useful, and doing something meaningful” with family.

“This adds to and enriches our homeschool rather than taking away from it,” Morganne said. “We do a university model school which is community-based with certified teachers coming alongside families. They provide curriculums and teach two times per week. We do school the other three days into which we add skilledbased learning time along with academics.”

The Shorts believe that while parents formerly relied on societal institutions to equip children with positive values, skills, and knowledge needed for adulthood, these needs must now be clearly established and furnished in the home.

“One aspect of homeschooling is that as parents we cannot expect anyone else to do this because society isn’t working on creating adults,” said Alex. “Children once were considered young adults by age 13, then 18, now maybe after college graduation. There is no longer a sufficient societal framework to fully educate children into well-functioning adults. | CONT. ON PG. 16 etxview.com | July/August 2022

| CONT. FROM PG. 15 “… The pandemic brought into focus how the communal structure of the world is fragile, so we are looking five to 10 years ahead. We wrestled with how we can, as parents, create the future we desire for our children. In the past it was easier to rely on societal structures for developing young people from child into adulthood. We are seeking to re-establish and form wholesome social systems that help children grow into healthy adults.”

What started as a doable way for the Shorts to grow their own nutrient dense food grew into a bigger dream of reawakening solid community living.

“The joy of learning from others while doing life in real community is good for families,” Alex said. “We are commanded to love one another; doing life individually and isolated inhibits that. We aspire to help others and ourselves with the gifts and abilities of like-minded people.”

Their business also provides a solution to a growing need — locally produced food. Eventually, the Shorts hope to expand their operation.

“Moving onto a farm is a goal but we aren’t ready,” Morganne said. “With a baby in our home, microgreens are a great first step to bless our family and the community. Fresh food may become a scarce commodity in the future. Microgreens are a way we can feed our family and others in our community.”

Traditional farm living or owning land is not necessary to participate in aspects of self-sufficient living, especially food production. Although it takes time, knowledge and dedication, the Shorts prove that even urban residents can learn how to grow a portion of their food.

“This is a simple, beautiful start with opportunity for our children to participate in our enterprise within the limited space we now have,” she said.

sk a room full of adult Tyler residents if they attended Camp Tyler as a child, and dozens will quickly raise their hands.

Just the name of the camp brings back memories for so many – they hear it and suddenly, they’re a fifth-grader again.

They’ll recount priceless memories, remember lasting applicable lessons they learned, and always do so with a big smile.

Seventy-five years later, officials are looking forward to renovations and carrying on the camp’s legacy.

Area youth learn how to build a shelter in the woods at Camp Tyler Outdoor School.

The local outdoor school has been a longtime staple to the Tyler community since it was established in 1945, offering a way for children to learn beyond the classroom.

Pupils get a one-of-a-kind interactive learning experience on the camp’s grounds, located right on the beautiful waters of Lake Tyler with 400 acres of land. Rather than a physical classroom, students may spend their time walking through the woods learning about ecosystems or studying wildlife, researching water samples from the pond, or even get up close and personal with farm animals.

Practical skills

Beyond your typical educational outdoorsy activities, Camp Tyler also helps students apply their daily classroom subjects while spending time in the great outdoors.

Bud Worthen remembers sitting in a geometry classroom many years ago and not understanding a thing.

Right out of high school, Worthen went to work framing houses. Because he was unable to comprehend formulas as a student, Worthen wasn’t able to apply those concepts

to his work. It wasn’t until years later Worthen realized how valuable those complicated formulas are in day-to-day life.

He and his son, who was 13 years old at the time, were pouring a slab of concrete as they were building a home.

“For 20 years, I was building homes my way – doing everything the way I’d learned from my grandfather and uncles, the slow way,” said Worthen, president of Camp Tyler Foundation.

As Worthen did things his way with a tape measure, his son looked at him funny then pulled out his calculator and was able to determine the distance in a matter of seconds.

Worthen said helping students understand that connection between classroom lessons and real-life application is a big part of Camp Tyler.

It’s not just the academic lessons students learn at the camp, but life lessons, too.

FROM PG. 23 students the difference between the narrow rings and fat rings,” said Kathy Lagesse, program director. “Then we explain how the narrow rings were dry years when the tree didn’t have what it needed, adding stress to its rings. It teaches them that we have stress in our lives, but we all have the ability to grow around it.”

Not only does it show children they can get past those stressful times, but also that good things can come from those hard times. A woodworker will want that stress area and create something beautiful out of it, and that’s just one of the lessons students can take with them forever.

“You’re not going to get all that inside a classroom,” Lagesse said.

Students can be exposed to new things they may have otherwise never seen. Conceived by the Tyler Kiwanis, with help from D.K. and Lottie Caldwell, the founders knew there would be a lasting need for urban kids to learn about the great outdoors.

outdoors and learn what types of careers they could have in the field.

“It expands opportunities and options. It shows them they don’t have to stay in the life they’re in, there could be more for them,” Lagesse said.

Renovations

Chartered in 1945 and serving its first youth group in 1948, Camp Tyler and its buildings have been around for quite some time. Many of the skilled craftsmen worked jobs during the week and built the cabins in the evenings and on the weekends.

Times have changed, and now some parts of the cabins are no longer up to current code.

The Camp Tyler Foundation has a goal of raising $1.25 million to rebuild the property's cabins. Necessary camp renovations include energy-efficient cabins, proper bathroom facilities meeting privacy standards, private rooms, stall showers and toilet installments as well as handwashing areas in each cabin, including a handicap area.

“The cabins are 60 years old, and they’ve been pretty well maintained. With changing times, privacy issues and handicap changes, we’re having to make a lot of changes.

Our goal is to bring this camp back to make it a premier camp in East Texas,” Worthen said.

The foundation held a successful fundraiser earlier this year and is working on securing grants, but it still needs more to get to its goal. Worthen said donations are welcome, and every donation is critical, big or small.

By the third quarter of the year, if everything goes as planned, Worthen said the foundation hopes to start rebuilding the first of its five cabins.

Although there’s a lot to be done and the cabins will get a total overhaul, the board wants to keep the cabins’ “nostalgic charm” and “camp flavor,” Lagesse said. It’s “rich heritage” that won’t be lost even with new cabins, she said.

“We’re using the same basic floorplan, just changing it up a little to meet modern standards,” Worthen said.

The camp depends entirely on donations and its

private donors. It is counting on community support to share its legacy with generations to come.

“We’re not going anywhere. We’re gonna keep moving forward, and I hope we can have 75 more years of making the same history that’s been made the last seven decades,” Worthen said.

Contributions of any amount can be made once or monthly, and all funds go toward the camp’s renovations and ensuring the camp is able to function efficiently, provide its staff with everything it needs, and continue teaching children the invaluable lessons they learn at the “classroom without walls.”

What didn’t make sense to her was the lack of transparency on Pine Tree Primary’s lunch menu.

“I personally didn’t feel comfortable with him eating the school lunch just because I wasn’t sure what type of meat was being served to him, whether it was pork or turkey or chicken. So we kind of just avoided that,” Alkam said. | CONT. ON PG. 30 etxview.com | July/August 2022

To appease Musa’s curiosity, Alkam asked his kindergarten teacher, Korie McMullan, if she could find out what kind of meat was being served on certain days. McMullan would ask the cafeteria staff, relay the information to Alkam, and then the cycle of asking and hearing back continued. But this was only a temporary solution, and Alkam knew it. What else could she do?

“I just figured there must be an easier way than having 30

to ask what type of meat is in his food every single day.

I didn’t feel like that was really fair for us to have to research and try and find out what’s being served to him,” Alkam said.

In tandem with McMullan, Alkam got in contact with Pine Tree ISD’s nutrition director, Michelle Mitchell.

Email correspondence began and Mitchell cooperated by providing Alkam a list of foods on the menu that contained pork. She soon found out and was surprised by the district’s inclusivity with their food, Alkam said.

“A lot of the foods don’t have pork, even the sausage is turkey sausage and even when it says ‘ham,’ it’s actually turkey, and see, we didn’t know this. We weren’t aware of this and we would just avoid it, even though he could’ve been eating it that entire time,” Alkam said.

Every food item that contained a pork product would be signified with an asterisk next to it, she said.

“So when we moved here, I was a little shocked that it wasn’t normal practice to do that,” Alkam said.

Alkam decided to suggest to Mitchell that the same system be used in Pine Tree’s menus. In February, the change was implemented district-wide and Pine Tree’s menus now notate the presence of pork. Alkam said the move felt like a massive acknowledgement of the local Muslim community and others who may not eat pork.

“It’ll help so many people across the district, whether they’re Muslim or Jewish or if they just choose not to eat pork … I just feel like it was like a really small gesture on behalf of the school district that has spoke volumes to

us in the Muslim community. It made us feel included, it made us feel seen and it made us feel like the school districts are thinking of our children. So it was a really neat accomplishment,” Alkam said.

As a member of a minority group, Alkam said she feels Muslims are often overlooked. According to her, the Muslim community in East Texas is fairly small which often makes them feel forgotten or unheard, which she thinks is unfair.

“Not just to us, there’s millions of students in the United States that heavily rely on the food they consume at school because of food insecurity,” Alkam said. “This issue isn’t meant to be politicized, it’s not my intention to try and conform everyone in the district to my beliefs, but this is a matter of nutrition and health. Since the change was put into place, Alkam said she’s heard from numerous local Muslims who want the same designation on their districts’ menus. Families in neighboring districts have reached out to her saying they’re having the same issue and avoid school food altogether, Alkam said. Many have even asked her if she could have the same done in their districts, she said.

“Unfortunately I don’t feel like I have that power, I’m not in the position to do that,” Alkam said.

She hopes however, that other districts will follow suit. Lack of meat identifiers on school menus is an 32

issue Alkam said spans throughout several local school districts, but since it isn’t something they come across very often, she understands it may present a new hurdle for them.

Mitchell was more than willing to help and find a way for the district to be inclusive, which Alkam said she appreciated. Mitchell understood how the menu could be confusing for parents. When someone sees a ‘ham and cheese sandwich’ on the menu, most automatically assume it means the ham is made of pork. That lunch meat is actually a turkey-based ham or sometimes even chicken-ham, Mitchell said, and the ‘pepperoni pizza’ could be either turkey-pepperoni or pork-pepperoni.

Since the issue was a concern for parents, it became a concern for her, Mitchell said.

“I went through all of our items and notated which

items contained pork. We try to look for alternatives but you can’t eliminate all pork from the (menu) because of what’s on the market,” Mitchell said.

By making the district-wide change, Mitchell hopes to make the menu selection easier for anyone who has dietary restrictions. She added that the district wants to strive for inclusivity and make sure its children are able to eat.

“They started a stepping stone for a situation that needed to be addressed, but it wasn’t being addressed because I wasn’t aware of it … I wish I would think of everything that might potentially come up. I can try to fix it as it does come up and I’m glad that they reached out and that I was able to do something for that family that may need this information,” Mitchell said.

As for Musa, he’s just happy to be eating school lunch.

about the new things he got to try at lunch. Alkam said she hopes to tell him this story when he gets older and can understand it better, she said. She wants to impress on Musa the importance of speaking up for oneself and the difference that can make.

“It’s really not a diverse area and I feel like if they (her children) do not have this courage to speak up for themselves and to stand up for themselves, it’s just going to weaken their character, and I want them to be confident. I want them to proudly say that they’re Muslim, Arab people. I want them to proudly speak about their heritage and about their religion and not feel like they have to be cast in the shadows because they are a minority. I want them to be proud of who they are, proud of their ethnicity, proud of their religion. I think that’s really important for them to learn,” Alkam said. etxview.com | July/August 2022

In other nearby rooms, clients will receive counseling for a variety of issues – the service that gave One Love Longview its start, and veterans or LGBTQ members of the community will meet in support groups.

In another office, a volunteer medical doctor will see patients who will be seated on an exam table donated by Texas Oncology in Longview.

It’s part of One Love Longview’s effort to provide a “full circle” of services to help with the many issues the nonprofit organization’s clients might have. Amanda Veasy, the volunteer executive director, said when One Love Longview started offering counseling services, she quickly realized the same people who never had access to mental health resources also had never had access to proactive medical care.

“When you have folks come in, and they’re experiencing homelessness,” those people also often need counseling for substance abuse or mental health issues, but they also have blisters on their feet, Veasy said.

The medical clinic can help with that, but also diabetes and skin infections, and it has helped people with life threatening issues.

It’s all made possible through community support – donations of time, supplies and money. The nonprofit is too young to qualify for grants and it isn’t supported by a thrift store like some other area nonprofits, Veasy said.

“We rely 100 percent on donations,” she said. What she has found during the couple of years One Love Longview has been in operation, is that if she speaks a need out loud, an answer emerges.

Veasy never planned to run a nonprofit organization and never prepared for that possibility.

“There is nothing to prepare me for this,” she said, as she sat in her office.

She and her husband, Rafael, have four children, ages 6, 11, 13

Amanda Veasy and 16. The East Texas Charter School graduate has some ministry background. She’s been a small business owner, served as business manager for a hair salon and worked in a medically monitored weight loss facility.

It’s her earlier life, though, when she experienced struggles similar to the people she helps now.

“It’s personal,” she said of some of the reasons that prompted her to start her own efforts to help those experiencing homelessness in Longview. “I lived in severe poverty the first part of my adult life. There were periods of time when I was pregnant with my oldest son at 17, I lived in an abandoned house that had no running water or electricity. The house has been torn down by the city since it was in such bad shape. From there, just severe poverty, sometimes not having water or electricity and not having food. We relied on outreach centers to even be able to feed my kids.”

Then, there was heartache and trauma, church hurt that took her out of the walls of the church and into Longview’s homeless community.

“Even coming from a ministry background, I had gone through a lot of abuse in the church and so that drove me about seven years ago to start working in homeless camps,” Veasy said. “Instead of going to church, we would take our tithe and put it onto our fireplace mantle.

Then, the Veasys would take that tithe and go to Magrill Plaza, where

many in the homeless community once congregated, or into the woods and spend the money on needs they found there.

“I mastered the art of listening,” she said, recalling sitting on tree stumps for those conversations with people experiencing homelessness.

“It broke my heart,” Veasy said.

She also was moved by the treatment of LGBTQ people.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of views across the board in different denominations about the LGBTQ issue. I ended up parting with the church again,” she said, adding that she thinks it’s the church’s responsibility to bridge the gap between that community and the church.

Then came the pandemic and racial tension, and political division.

That’s when she and a friend went out into the community, simply giving out cold drinks and gift cards to people.

“We got this huge response from people who just wanted to be kind to people for no reason,” she said, and that showed her many needs in the community.

She began meeting with local nonprofits and city leaders as well as pastors to talk about where the biggest needs were.

“It came across the board that it was mental health,” she said, and that counseling services were needed.

Soon she had formed a partnership with licensed clinical social worker Tina Rushing to begin offering those services, which have been growing ever since.

And Veasy isn’t done. She wants One Love Longview to open a shelter for those experiencing homelessness, one that would be different from existing shelters by meeting the needs of people who don’t fit into the rules of those faith-based facilities.

“It’s like everything else that happens here. We say it out loud one day, and then it happens,” Veasy said, describing a facility she recently toured. She was counting the spaces where she could create individual rooms for people.

“It’s a large facility,” she said, with a $2.4 million price tag. She smiled at that prospect.

“With the $10,000 we have in the bank right now, I think it may be right around the corner. I think we’ve done crazier things than raise $2.4 million in the last few years,” she said. etxview.com | July/August 2022

ithin roughly a year, 40 students will embark on a pioneering journey for Northeast Texas when the UT Tyler School of Medicine hosts its inaugural class.

Before their beginning kicks off, Dr. Brigham Willis, founding dean of the school of medicine, has been granted the “opportunity of a lifetime” – to lead a team developing a curriculum that raises up community-focused physicians.

“You don’t get this chance very often,” Willis said.

Willis, a longtime educator and leader in academic medicine, will oversee the seventh medical school in the University of Texas System. The class is expected to start in June 2023.

As Northeast Texas welcomes its first medical school, Willis wants to see an emphasis on community engagement, preventive care and improved health disparities.

“I really don’t want it to be some ivory tower that’s just doing its own thing. Everything we’re doing is about how it benefits East Texas,” Willis said.

He previously served as senior associate dean of medical education at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine and he’s been a pediatrician for about 20 years.

Willis wanted to be a pediatrician since he was 12 years old because of his love for science and helping kids. His passion for education grew from tutoring fellow high school and college classmates.

“Watching and helping someone get that knowledge and understanding – it’s the most fulfilling thing to me,” Willis said. “I’ve always kind of pursued opportunities within education, even though I was becoming a practicing physician myself.” | CONT. ON PG. 42

| CONT. FROM PG. 40 Those years of leadership opportunities culminated into what he calls an “experience of a lifetime” – starting a medical school.

Willis said the school will increase the number of physicians in East Texas, which is low compared to other parts of the state.

“One of the big problems in the medical system in the U.S. in general, especially in the underserved regions, is there’s not nearly enough manpower to focus on preventive care,” Willis said. “We want to educate physicians to be advocates for preventive care, for eating right instead of getting a heart operation after your heart fails.”

While building a medical school can be daunting, he said UT Tyler already has a great foundation, including community support, graduate medical programs, a nursing school, the merging of the health science center and university, and a team of researchers.

School leaders are expecting 6,000 people wanting to become a part of the 40-student class. It’s a competitive process to find those interested in serving and leading, Willis said.

“We’re looking for somebody committed to preventive care, committed to helping underserved populations who has experience with community engagement and leadership and patient advocacy,” Willis said. “We want academically qualified people but we’re really focusing on students who are committed to their communities from East Texas.”

Something unique to this medical school is the curriculum will have little to no lectures. Students are going to use videos, books and flashcards to learn on their own, Willis explained.

“It’s all active learning,” he said. “When you come into the school, you’re actually doing problems with your classmates and professors or going over cases that apply to what you learned.”

As the school’s first hire, Willis has been working to find a team of educators who will guide those future physicians. He said the medical school officials are working to gather as much philanthropy as possible to support free tuition for all students.

“We have a couple big gifts that are going to allow us to do that for the first couple of classes, but we want to be able to do it forever,” Willis said. “One of the best ways to get students to stay here is if they graduate with almost no debt, because then they’re not going to feel pressure to go into big cities.”

Willis said community engagement is one of the most significant qualities that will separate UT Tyler from other medical schools.

Willis added that the UT Tyler Health Science Center, located at 11937 U.S. Highway 271, already has a General Preventive Medicine Residency Program that has invested in the region.

“The existence of a school of medicine just amplifies that message. I think it’s a strong foundation to build those things,” he said.

He recalled when he attended medical school, there was very little focus on nutrition education and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

“I think there's been a huge lack in so many medical

communities. We have to change that,” he said. “We are going to teach nutrition, healthy eating and how to educate patients on healthy eating, not just eating your vegetables but specific strategies on how to change eating habits.”

He added students will have a teaching kitchen to learn how to prepare healthy meals.

As a pediatrician, Willis wants to see more pediatric specialities in the area. He hopes to partner with Christus and UT Health to strengthen children’s health care.

“If you can do the right preventive care on kids, it can tend to last a lifetime. So healthy kids will hopefully lead to healthy adults,” he said.

Willis said the medical school will focus on addiction to methamphetamine and opioids, another notably high statistic in the area.

Through training on nutrition, addiction, tobacco cessation and exercise as a prescription, Willis said the UT Tyler medical students will graduate as preventive health care advocates. etxview.com | July/August 2022

Home to everything from historic missions and museums to family attractions and one-of-akind shopping, it’s no surprise that San Antonio is the second largest city in the state. According to information provided by Visit San Antonio, it’s the seventh largest city in the U.S. and one of the fastest growing. The city is host to more than 39 million visitors each year,

according to Visit San Antonio, as people flock to the city for a true taste of Texas spirit.

Remember the Alamo Throughout its history, San Antonio has been a colony of Spain, a territory of Mexico, a part of the Republic of Texas and a city in a state in the United States.

Today, remains of 18th century Spanish structures dot the city, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The oldest and most iconic is the Alamo, which stands today as a cultural icon.

The Alamo originally was known as Mission San Antonio de Valero. The mission, from which the city derives its name, was founded in 1718 by Fray Antonio de Olivares. Subsequently, four additional missions, founded by Roman Catholic missionaries, opened in the area: Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission Espada and Mission San Juan. In the 18th century, the five missions collectively formed the largest

concentration of Catholic missions in North America.

Today, the city continues to preserve the historic structures so that visitors may experience their history and architectural beauty. In 1978, the United States Congress created the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and in 1993, the city of San Antonio created the concept for the Mission Trails hike-and-bike system. The city provides routes for visitors to walk or bike between all five missions.

All the missions remain free to visit; however, some additional features at the Alamo have a fee.

Additionally, Missions San José, Concepción, Espada and San Juan continue to have church services.

While The Alamo no longer has church services, the church itself at the historic site remains open to visit.

The San Antonio missions are the only site in Texas.

Of the five missions, the Alamo – of course – went on to hold an even greater place in history as it was the site of a historic battle in Texas’ fight for independence from Mexico. According to Remember the Alamo Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides support for the historic site and its preservation, more than 1.6 million people visit the Alamo each year.

In 2011, the Texas Legislature tasked the Texas General Land Office with management and preservation of the Alamo. In 2015, efforts began to restore the Alamo and in 2019, Alamo Plaza was reunited with the Alamo Church and the Long Barrack, the last remaining structures from the 1836 battle.

Vibrant Culture No visit to San Antonio is complete without visiting the Downtown District, which is home to the River Walk, Market Square, Hemisfair Park and other popular attractions that offer glimpses of San Antonio’s culture.

The River Walk – which is one of the city’s most popular attractions – features shopping, dining, sightseeing, hotels, and more on a 15-mile oasis along the San Antonio River. Visitors can explore the River Walk by foot or by boat.

Narrated barge tours are a popular way to experience the River Walk.

Along the River Walk, brightly colored umbrellas line the riverbank. They’re adjoined by tables in which diners enjoy a variety of food, typically the city’s famed Tex-Mex, while catching views of the river. Though lined with visitors, the River Walk offers a sense of tranquility amid the city.

Nearby, Market Square offers a completely different atmosphere that deeply reflects San Antonio’s ties to Mexico, and visitors might just hear the tunes of a Mariachi band or two while exploring.

Market Square is a historic plaza that serves as both a market and social hub, encompassing three blocks of shops, galleries and restaurants. The shops in the market allow visitors to purchase Mexican hand-made goods. In some cases, artists can also be seen working on-site.

Market Square is reputed to be the largest Mexican market in the U.S. It’s also home to some

For a dose of outdoor family fun, visit Hemisfair Park. The park features abundant green space, an amazing playground, native flower gardens, and it’s home to the Tower of the Americas.

Standing at 750 feet tall, Tower of the Americas offers the most spectacular views of Alamo City.

The Flags Over Texas observation deck gives stunning views and enables guests to learn about the history of the six flags that once flew over Texas. An admission ticket also includes access to the Skies Over Texas 4D Theatre Ride, which takes visitors on a trip across Texas.

Tower of the Americas also offers a variety of dining options, such as Chart House, an awardwinning restaurant that offers revolving views of the city below.

Contemporary Neighborhoods Intermixed with San Antonio’s historic districts are revitalized areas that are bringing new life to some of the city’s neighborhoods.

The Pearl, for example, is now one of San Antonio’s trendiest districts. The Pearl, which is home to shops, restaurants, outdoor markets, apartments and more, has revitalized space previously occupied by the historic Pearl Brewery.

The site formerly operated by Pearl Brewing Co. dates back to 1883 when it was originally owned

by J.B. Behloradsky Brewery and the City Brewery. In 1883, an investment group purchased the property and that same year San Antonio Brewery formed. In 1887, the popular Texas beer known as Pearl originated. In 1952, the brewery changed its name to Pearl Brewery after the iconic brew. While the brewery changed hands a couple of times, eventually coming under the umbrella of

Pabst Brewing Co., its doors closed in 2001.

The brewery grounds were repurposed and are now home to locally owned restaurants, weekly farmers markets and unique shops.

The former bottling plant, for example, is now a food hall that features a variety of cuisines from ramen to Mexican street food.

For those who want to know where the locals go in San Antonio, look no further than Southtown.

Just a few blocks from most of San Antonio’s tourist attractions, Southtown features an up-andcoming arts community, unique shopping and contemporary dining that puts a twist on fan favorites.

ule Hidalgo became a hairstylist accidentally, as she says.

Back in the ‘90s, Jule was helping out at CS Cutting Company rolling hair. Her best friend was a stylist there, and they had just opened up.

“The owner said to me, her name was Connie Rash, she said, ‘You’re a natural!’ And I was just rolling hair, no big deal, they were doing this big event,” she remembered.

But she kept that comment in the back of her mind. A few years

later, she found herself unfulfilled in another career field and went back to school to become a hairstylist.

“It was just because I was being nice and I was helping rolling hair and then that one person – Connie, the owner – gave me the spark to say, ‘You’re kind of a natural at this.’ It’s just a complete accident.

You never know how you’ll impact someone. And here I am 26 years late, and I still totally love what I do.”

Situated in The Village on Judson Road sits Hidalgo Hair Studio. The Aveda concept salon, which opened in 1999, is owned by Hidalgo.

“I’m an entrepreneur. I’ve owned this salon 23 years … I come from a legacy of business owners,” she said.

Earlier this year, the studio was recognized as one of Salon Today’s Top 200 honorees, for its efforts in reducing waste. The magazine, which honors successes in salons and businesses, has been one of 62

Salons must meet specific criteria to be considered for the Top 200, like making a certain amount of revenue.

At Hidalgo Hair Studio, stylists work to decrease the amount of waste created during appointments.

“I have a computer system, so we can actually put in the system exactly how much – let’s say ‘Katie’ – had in her color last time. She comes back every four to five weeks, etcetera,” she said. “There’s some room there, even if you have an assistant working with you, that you can measure better and do better.”

The salon conducted a six-weeklong experiment that included depositing leftover color into a container. After those six weeks, the container was weighed. The experiment led to a discovery that over $3,000 worth of product was being wasted annually.

Hidalgo said taking notes, utilizing measuring tools and using different methods could help prevent wasted product.

“I’ve never really thought about using a brush and bowl as opposed to a bottle,” she said. “You waste so much more product using a bottle. I had to teach myself a new trick, which is using a brush and a bowl.”

Hidalgo hopes to use the savings from reducing waste and put them toward stylists’ education.

“I’m behind the chair full time, and I have assistants, and they kind of learn from me,” Hidalgo said.

“We take them fresh out of school and train them. It’s a labor of love.”

The COVID-19 pandemic shifted how stylists received some of that education.

“Everything went online, everything went video,” she said. “It was like an explosion of education. So I put a TV, grabbed my laptop, and set it up to where they could virtually learn.”

The pandemic also changed the way the business was run.

“We really pivoted. We did

home color kits. We did a lot of innovative things to keep our business going, and staying in touch with our clients,” she said.

The color kits were available to the salon’s clients, so they could touch up their roots during the shutdown.

“Our color kits were really nice.

Our clients were so grateful to the fact that it was available to them, so when we came back five or six weeks later, it really wasn’t so hard to pick up right where we left off because some of them had already been doing their color at home.”

Hidalgo got the idea when she attended a hair show before the pandemic, which featured a session about home color kits and express services; that session was a catalyst for the kits, and she immediately began working on her own.

And then the pandemic shut everything down.

“Supplies went away, almost immediately. Sally’s was closed, everything. We were already prepared, because we had started on that journey already, because we were doing this new service,” she said.

Hidalgo believes in reinvesting in her studio.

“I think that’s what makes us so successful over the years. There’s been changes, there will always continue to be changes,” she said. “Hairstylists will come and go, out of this door, in this door.

But it’s just what we do when we have changed, and how we pick up the pieces, that’s what makes us different. And I think that’s why we’ve had such longevity here.” etxview.com | July/August 2022

T

he transition from high school to college can be challenging, but a place like East Texas Baptist University makes new students feel at home right away.

Beyond offering an excellent education with 43 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs, the Christcentered institution in Marshall allows students to grow their faith and become better leaders alongside like-minded peers and faculty.

Erin Berry, who will be a junior this fall, was recruited to play basketball at ETBU. When choosing a school, she wanted to find a place where she could grow both on and off the court.

“ETBU was a place where I could grow in all facets of my life, specifically spiritually,” Berry said. “When I toured campus, it felt like home, and I could see the way the light of Christ resonates throughout all of campus.”

Being a student at ETBU is special, Berry said, because it allows her to be challenged and encouraged in her faith. One of the most fulfilling parts is how the professors and peers really invest in students, she said.

Dr. Amber Daub, Dean of the School of Education at ETBU, said the university is unique in so many ways.

She said her fellow faculty members pour in to their students day in and day out to help them grow into their maximum potential.

“Beyond being consummate professionals, the faculty are fully committed to student students. They work tirelessly to prepare students for life beyond college,” Daub said. “Ensuring that students enter their field of study with all of the knowledge and skills is a top priority. Beyond that, faculty invest in students on a personal level through the authentic integration of faith. When students graduate from ETBU, they go into the world knowing how to not only succeed in life but also how to live out their faith every day. It is a rare and wonderful culture to be a part of every day.”

Berry said part of that culture is being challenged and encouraged in her walk with Christ while having multiple opportunities to engage and serve others.

She believes anyone can make ETBU their home away from home, as long as they take full advantage of everything the campus has to offer.

“One piece of advice I would give is to not be afraid to ask questions and get involved in campus activities or clubs. Get to know others in your class or your professors and do not let an opportunity slip by you by staying in your dorm room,” Berry said.

“College is what you make it to be, so do not be afraid to step outside one's comfort zone – try the more challenging classes and embrace what campus has to offer; you will learn a lot about yourself.”

Part of what made moving to college so easy for Berry was getting involved and staying active on campus. She made sure to stay connected with her family by setting aside time walking from lunch, in between classes, or in the evenings to call them.

Daub said ETBU’s size helps the depth of relationships among students and between students and faculty be exceptionally strong. It’s still large enough to have plenty of opportunities for student engagement. Daub called ETBU’s student life “vibrant” and encourages all new students to connect on campus in at least one way.

“We know that involved students are successful students, and ETBU students take part in many organizations,” she said. “Students are able to benefit from the balance of quality relationships and the variety of opportunities to connect.”

Being involved not only helps students stay connected and engaged, it also helps them be more successful in their classes, Daub said. Beyond joining a club or Bible study, students should be sure to introduce themselves to their professors so they get the most out of their time in the classroom. | CONT. ON PG. 73

Instead of sitting in a classroom all day, students may only have a couple classes per day.

“The day won't be as full as you might have been used to in high school. That open time is there so that you can read and study and prepare for your classes. Schedule time for that and hold yourself accountable to staying on track,” Daub said. “Also schedule time to rest and make new friends on campus. There is so much joy that comes from being all-in.”

Berry said something that helped her as a new student was being organized with a calendar and establishing routines to aid with her time management.

Daub said students looking to take the next step in their educational careers will be welcomed to ETBU with open arms.

“ETBU is filled with genuine faculty and staff who are as truly invested in serving students as it seems.

It is a great place to learn and grow every day,” Daub said. “My goal is to never take it for granted, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to students who are ready to take the next step.”

ongtime educator Beth Nelms has created the best recipe for fulfillment in her retirement.

Her love for children, desire to teach, and creative abilities are just the right ingredients to bring all her passions together.

The Longview resident owns Nana B’s Cookies, a business in which she offers decorative cookies and also teaches cookie classes for children and adults alike.

Throughout her education career, Nelms has taught in Houston, Longview and Hallsville, and has held an administrative position. She earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Although Nelms has retired from teaching full time, she still finds ways to teach, through both her business and by working part time as the director of educator certification at LeTourneau University.

Nelms has been an educator for decades but said that part of her career is slowly reaching its end. She said running her cookie business is her passion and something she’s getting ready to fully take on once she completely retires.

Nana B’s Cookies began five years ago, but it’s not just a regular

business to Nelms. It’s an outlet – a way to continue educating others and also exercise her love for baking, something she has adored her whole life. Nelms has fond memories baking with her own children years ago, and mixing that passion with her desire to teach is the perfect combination.

Even though the chapter of her education career will soon reach its final pages, she will continue teaching children and empowering them through her cookie business.

Nelms offers baking courses for adults in which she teaches others how to make sugar cookies, along with ‘Mommy and Me’ classes that incorporate children and allow them to be creative while uniting relationships among adults and children.

“It's the chance for the adult and the child to build their bond together, strengthen their bond together by doing something that's fun that they both will enjoy,” Nelms said. | CONT. ON PG. 81 etxview.com | July/August 2022

“I tell them that ‘I'm the boss today, because it's my class, but you're the boss today. This class is for you. This is your class today and you're the one that's in charge. What that means is that when you're sitting there at that table, if Mommy wants to try to tell you what to put on your cookie, you're out, it's completely OK today to tell Mommy, ‘Nope, I'm in charge,’” she said. “I want to empower the children so that they're making the decisions themselves.”

Nelms also aims to incorporate important life lessons through her cookie camps. For example, children who are in sixth grade and up will not only learn how to make the sugar cookies, but also how to pursue a way to make money from the baking skills they obtain. She said a lot of older children have opportunities to make money through odd jobs

like babysitting, but baking skills are something they could apply to a business independently.

She suggested that the children could learn to make DIY take-home cookie kits and sell those year-round, especially during the holidays.

Nelms finds it important to teach and allow kids to incorporate their skills into real life situations, she said.

“We have school, and schools are awesome, but they need hands-on experiences using their math skills and using the skills that they pick up at school. This gives them the opportunity for that and the ability for them to see what it takes to run a business. That's what I want them to have,” she said. “I want them to have those life skills, I want them to be able someday to build those experiences in their own kitchens, and to go in and make cookies with their parents, with their siblings or with their own children someday.”

yler native Theresa Cheek believes art can be the answer to many of life’s challenges, as she enthusiastically helps people weather storms with her decorative art.

“It’s gratifying seeing families grow closer despite obstacles, even while isolated or battling illness,” said Cheek, who owns East Texas-based Art’s the Answer. Her goal with clients is finding a way to use art as a nurturing or healing tool in their lives. Cheek’s creations are inside the homes of families facing difficulties, living with autism or recovering from trauma, for example. She also brings joy to memory care and retirement facilities through her work.

She then researches images and information pertinent to their project.

“I combine historical research with my own ideas to bring their vision to life,” she said. Every project is different, involving painting of murals, gilding, plaster and trompe l’oeil.

As part of the process, Cheek also interviews clients to learn who they are, what they value, and what they cherish in their heritage. “Home reflects who you are, your values, identity, and history of your family line,” she said.

Cheek emphasizes the human need for art and decoration in daily life.

“Creating and enjoying art is part of what makes us fully human, and home is our place of refuge,” Cheek said. “Your home needs to be you. It is where we relax,

Enhancing one’s environment with art can also promote healing and bring positive energy, she said.

“Pleasant living spaces produce energy that helps families effectively manage life’s challenges … We can take art for granted, yet art is good medicine,” she said.

Beyond that, Cheek believes art can mend brokenness and soothe family problems.

“Art is an answer to conflict, dysfunction and war because art conveys beauty, promoting healing,” she said. “You don’t need to be in a museum to see beauty.”

Part of Cheek’s work includes creating therapy rooms for autistic children by using colors, images, familiar photos, and favorite personal items. This helps children with orderliness and connection.

“Art helps them regulate behavior and equips them to positively relate with others,” Cheek said.

For those who have suffered abuse, a calming, serene mural can be conducive to healing. Art can transform a room into a place of emotional safety and allow release from trauma, she said.

Another place Cheek’s artwork has made an impact is in memory care and retirement facilities in Longview, Tyler and Athens. When creating pieces within those living spaces, Cheek’s mission was to research iconic historical images from each town and help residents connect through that artwork.

“Knowing local history is vital because it provides emotional connection with the era in which they grew up. Connecting with a person’s past and their life story helps them feel happy in the present,” said Cheek.

Families are always uplifted when seeing their loved ones’ reactions to the artwork.

“Family members could see their eyes light up when they looked at images that make them feel youthful again,” she said.

Cheek has served the East Texas community as an artisan for 30 years. She recalls always drawing or painting and landed her first art commission work in high school. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art history at University of Texas in Austin gave Cheek her career direction. Her university studies were foundational in her historical approach to art projects.

A lifelong learner, Cheek travels throughout Europe where she finds rich opportunity to continue her research and study of art history. She shows references and images to her clients to replicate with historical period and technical accuracy.

Not only does the area provide activities to burn off some energy, there are also plenty of ways for children to stimulate their minds while school is out but still have fun while doing so.

mong the things to do is recently-opened Tyler business Code Ninjas, 8926 S. Broadway Ave. Code Ninjas gives kids the opportunity to learn coding activities in a fun, dojo inspired setting. Not only does Code Ninjas offer a yearround program called Create that is inspired by the system of karate dojo, it also has summer camps.

In the Create program, kids ages 7 through 16 begin at a white belt and work their way up to a black belt, said Tyler location owners Ashley and Chris Smith.

As participants work through the “belts,” which are colored bracelets, they also advance in coding languages.

For younger children with an interest in coding, Code Ninja also offers a program called Jr. for ages 5 to 7.

While the kids may be learning to code, “our No. 1 thing is to have fun,” Ashley said.

As they learn to code, children are working with video games and even have a time just for play at the end.

in a different manner,” Ashley said. “They're not just mindlessly staring at a screen, they are building skills and learning new things that they haven't done in the past.”

Throughout the summer, STEM-based camps such as 3D printing, how to become a YouTuber, composing with coding and more are offered, Ashley said. These are all weeklong camps that last three hours a day.

Both Ashley and Chris are engineers with a coding background so being able to share their knowledge with children in an entertaining way is something they enjoy, the couple said. Exposing kids to STEM and coding is something they find important, especially today.

“Technology is not going away, so this really is the future of these kids,” Ashley said.

“Regardless of what they decide to do as a career, this will give them an excellent foundation.”

In Longview, among the many activities is a visit to the children's museum Longview World of Wonders at 112 East Tyler St. “Longview World of Wonders inspires a lifelong love of learning by giving children the opportunity to imagine, create, and explore in a handson educational environment,” according to Longview WOW. There are many exhibits that teach kids about practical skills, building, inventing something new, natural resources, inspiring play and more.

Some exhibits include The House where kids can see the inner workings of a home in a new perspective; The Market where they can learn about how food is grown; The Park where they can produce a play or puppet show with friends; Build It where children can create using legos and many more.

Longview WOW will also have fun activities throughout July such as its space lab and

baking classes including donut making, pie making and cookie decorating.
