The Don’t Miss List

Here’s what’s on our radar this week. Go to

PARADE.COM/ENTERTAINMENT for more.

GARY OLDMAN: CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: KMAZUR/WIREIMAGE/GETTY IMAGES; GEOFF ROBINS/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES; AJ PICS/ALAMY; UNITED ARCHIVES GMBH/ALAMY; PICTURELUX/THE HOLLYWOOD ARCHIVE/ALAMY; APPLE TV+

THE RELUCTANT SPY Academy Award winner Gary Oldman, 65, once again dons the persona of Jackson Lamb, a brilliant but misanthropic leader of spies, for the acclaimed espionage drama Slow Horses (Nov. 29 on Apple TV+). The sixepisode third season will be based on Real Tigers, the third novel in the Mick Herron spy series, in which Jackson and his eccentric agents are dragged into a conspiracy that threatens the future of not just Slough House but of MI5 itself. Following in the footsteps of his spy turn, we’ve sleuthed out some intriguing facts about the London-born Oscar-winning actor.

 Oldman was a pianist as a child, and later a singer, but decided to pursue acting after seeing Malcolm McDowell in Long Ago, Tomorrow.

 Before finding acting

success, he worked on an assembly line, sold shoes and beheaded pigs in a slaughterhouse.

 That’s him singing a duet with his

friend, rock star DAVID BOWIE, for the song “You’ve Been Around” on the album The Sacred Squall of Now.

 Actress Laila Morse, who plays Maureen “Big Mo” Harris on the British soap opera EastEnders, is his older sister.

He’s used a different accent in nearly every role, from Sid Vicious (Sid & Nancy), SIRIUS BLACK (Harry Potter), WINSTON CHURCHILL (Darkest Hour) and GEORGE SMILEY (Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy) to Harry Truman (Oppenheimer).

Oldham has been married five times (Lesley Manville, Uma Thurman, Donya Fiorentino, Alexandra Edenborough, GISELE SCHMIDT) and has three sons and one stepdaughter. PARADE AND NUMBRIX ARE REGISTERED TRADEMARKS OF ATHLON SPORTS COMMUNICATIONS, INC.© 2023 THE ARENA MEDIA BRANDS, LLC

Personality WALTER SCOTT ASKS... I remember learning it as a kid and mom and I and singing it together before The Judds became famous, and then on a 1980-something Christmas record, so it’s a personal song. It’s timely because I’m sharing the stage with my favorite performers after 40 years, which is amazing that I’m still doing what I love. It’s a good time to put out something that has good memories for me. Also, people want to celebrate the ‘80s and ‘90s again Absolutely. I said it on stage last night: “The ‘80s and ‘90s, baby.” It was one of the best times of my life and so to be able to be performing these songs that I did when I was in my 20s is such a kick in the pants.

The “Is It Over Yet” Grammy-winning singer, 59, takes a break from her “Back to Wy” tour to celebrate the holidays by hosting the twohour Christmas at the Opry (Dec. 7 on NBC and next day on Peacock) special. Among those joining Wynonna at the Grand Ole Opry House to perform Christmas classics and current holiday hits in Nashville are Kelly Clarkson, Mickey Guyton, Brenda Lee, Chris Janson, Chrissy Metz and Trace Adkins. Why host Christmas at the Opry? I love Christmas and I’ve never hosted a TV special before like that, so I was very eager to see what that was like. I wanted to be at the Opry because that’s where I grew up. You’ll be performing your new version of “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem,” which you originally recorded with your mom, on the special. Why did you decide to release that as a solo single now? I’m experiencing a lot of memories. It’s like a big scrapbook right now for me. I’m on a tour that’s going back to my very first two solo records and I’m just in this place of remembering. It’s like everyone else in life that has the family over and they get down the scrapbooks and they talk about the memories, and they look at the photos and they just remember when and that’s what I’m doing with “Beautiful Star.”

Do you look at her as an example of what’s possible and that you might still be singing when you’re 78? God willing, I will. I think about that a lot because I’m turning 60 next year. I think about her and about her legacy and everything that she stands for. If I could be half as energetic as she is, good God. This is a holiday special, so can you share a Judd family Christmas holiday tradition? Well, music and food, because we had nothing. I mean we were

One of the high points of the evening will be seeing Brenda Lee, who will hopefully be singing “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” How great is it to see her performing at 78 years old? She is so sassy. She’s the kind of personality when she comes into a room, she literally lights up a room. She has such a big spirit for such a tiny package that she got everybody there feeling so joyful. They say that you’ve either got it or you don’t, and she’s got it. I found her to be such a joy that I wanted to be around her for the rest of the day.

This is your second Christmas without Naomi. I love Christmas but it’s also a really painful time as well and I know it is for a lot of people because the person that they love isn’t there. I’m so keenly aware of how people are struggling because the holidays are really hard for some people. So, Christmas is definitely bittersweet for me. welfare, food-stamps poor, and for me, it was always about the food and the fellowship around the food. I just remember that being such an integral part of our holiday. We had no money, so we literally chopped down our Christmas tree. That was such a joyful event that it became a tradition. Because you’re a kid, you want more. But I now look back on those memories and I think, You know what? We didn’t have anything, but we had everything because we had each other, and we had our imagination and that to me is so huge. I didn’t realize it then as a kid, but I realize it now for my own children and my grandchild that the most important part is being together and having time, putting down the phone, and really fully being present and in the moment. So, did you do things like pop popcorn to decorate the tree? Absolutely. I remember that so clearly. The popcorn thing was a huge part. If we were to drop by your house before the holidays, what music would you be playing? I cannot do Christmas and I won’t do Christmas without Nat King Cole. On The Voice, you said you were the heart of The Judds and your mom Nao-

mi was the head. What did you mean? She was more Type-A personality and more analytical. She was organized. She made lists. She had the ability to be more managerial. And I was a kid with such a big heart. I’m definitely an empath, so I feel everything everybody else does. I think that’s part of what made The Judds work so well. Is it hard to feel what everybody else is feeling and live your own life? On a good day it helps me to sing the way I do and the rest of it is a pain in the butt at times. But it allows me to have compassion, which is what Jesus taught. What’s it like as the Mega Mentor on The Voice to give the next generation of talent advice like: “Squeeze your butt to hit the high notes”? That’s so funny that you said that. That’s been the best part Social media was commenting on your CMA duet with Jelly Roll. Were you especially nervous? That was special because I got stuck in the car and I was really scared about making it to the church on time. There were about six or eight cars in front of me and I absolutely panicked because we were at the top of the show. So, by the time I got to the side of the stage, it was absolute chaos because it’s live television and everybody was running around, and I just went, “Oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God,” and then it was 5-4-3-2-1 and I went, “Hallelujah, let’s do this.” I just have a thing about live television because you don’t get to do it over.

for me because I don’t love to be on TV. I’ve always found it to be quite nervewracking. But I absolutely plugged into these babies, and I just became like any other mother. I loved them. I loved the fact that I got to make a human connection. Because the fact is, I do get nervous. I wanted it to be so good that I take on a lot of responsibility for stuff. It’s just part of who I am and my personality, but I love making connections. Jelly Roll has been very kind to me and we’re going to do more together. What do you still enjoy about being on the road with your Back to Wy tour? A grandmother and granddaughter came to the meet and greet last night, and they had matching shirts on, which they had made. I almost burst into tears because they were so cute. We talked and we laughed, and I hugged the granddaughter. The fact that she even knew who I was, I was like mind blown. We just had the most delightful connection on earth. I revel in getting to be a part of people’s lives and injecting joy and love into their lives. It’s my absolute favorite thing. I get to stand there and say something that means something to them, and they say something to me. It’s just the human connection. It’s the best part of what I do. You’ve said the best revenge is living well. Is that how you live your life now? Oh, 100 percent. Every day, everybody has everything happening all at once— the good, the bad, and the ugly—and so you’ve got to pick out which things you’re going to spend your energy on. I have to keep focused on the prize and the prize is getting out there at night and seeing myself as a messenger. I literally see myself as a servant of song and it’s my job to deliver the message, and that is my whole goal.

THE CARY GRANT JOURNEY EARLY TRAUMA Born in Bristol, England, in 1904, Cary Grant’s childhood was tumultuous at best. His parents didn’t get along. His father, Elias, a clothing presser, left his family to take up with another woman. When Grant was nine, he was told that his mother, Elsie, was dead. In truth, she had been committed to a psychiatric institution—a fact Grant wouldn’t learn for decades. Four-year-old Archie “He was abandoned,” Cannon Leach in 1909. says. She adds that Grant didn’t talk about his early years until the two visited Bristol during their marriage: “I asked him why he was so down and slowly but surely the story came out. I was staggered by what I heard.”

thrower. By the end of the decade, he’d star in classics like Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story and Gunga Din. By the way, although he was nominated for Academy Awards for Penny Serenade (1941) and None But the Lonely Heart (1944), Grant never won a competitive Oscar. He received an honorary Oscar, presented to him by Frank Sinatra, in 1970.

FAMILY REUNION At age 30, Grant learned that his mother was still alive and had been institutionalized at the Bristol Lunatic Asylum. They soon reconnected and forged a new relationship. Even now, Jennifer says that she prioritized telling Elsie’s story in Archie. “There are books that said my grandmother went crazy and that really pressed on a nerve,” she says. “The truth is that her life was taken away by my grandfather.” And per Cannon, who met her in the 1960s while filming a movie in London, she was “strongwilled and determined to live.” Elsie Leach died in 1973.

JASON ISAACS ON CARY GRANT Though Jason Isaacs is a fellow British thespian and even attended the University of Bristol—located square in Cary Grant’s hometown—he admits he had his work cut out for him in preparing for Archie. “I knew nothing about him and don’t think I’d seen that many of his lms,” says Isaacs, 60, a Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee who’s probably best known for playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter lms. He talks to Parade about getting to know Cary Grant.

out of overprotection for the baby. (“You can imagine what that was like for me,” she says.) The couple had barely been married two years when Cannon filed for divorce. Reliving the split on Archie “was difficult because that was a very vulnerable period of my life,” she says. “It took years for my heart to heal.”

DAD MODE In 1961, Grant turned down the role of James Bond. Following 1966’s Walk, Don’t Run, the 62-year-old turned down acting altogether. For his Act III, he took an executive role for the Fabergé cosmetics company and embraced

How do you embody Cary Grant without impersonating him? Well, this is meant to capture the essence of a person in history. And I realized early on that I wasn’t playing Cary, because Cary Grant was playing a character. He didn’t look like that; he didn’t walk like that. He constructed everything with incredible intelligence and ferocity, and he ended up curating a brand for 30 years. I read biographies and I spoke to [daughter and former wife] Jennifer and Dyan and watched the movies. But the biggest thing that helped me was hearing an audio interview that he did near the end of his life. Nobody had ever heard it. What was so remarkable about that interview? At 82, he was a businessman and a father. And he had, in many ways, found the peace that he thought he’d nd through universal love and being adored by the world. And he sounded nothing like he did in the movies. Was this a role you were seeking out? No, are you kidding me? For whatever reason, the producers came to my door and my rst, second, third and thousandth instinct was no. Why would anyone want to play a smooth, suave icon? Then I read the script and it wasn’t about Cary Grant—it was a story about Archie Leach. It led me to a tremendously messed-up human being who had this terrible childhood and had to reinvent himself in order to nd people who loved him. That’s incredibly complicated for an actor. What really surprised you about him while doing the research? As a father, he desperately wanted to be the antidote to the parents that he had . . . or didn’t have. He focused everything on Jennifer, which would be overwhelming for any child. But he was nonetheless a loving father. But he was a terrible husband. I read testimonies of court documents from his divorces. Talking to Dyan, I saw how vulnerable she still is. She’s still healing from those scars. She told me things I will never tell anyone. In terms of his movie stardom, do you think there’s a comparable actor working today? No, because his lms were massively popular. George Clooney is a very interesting man, good actor and a great producer and director, but he doesn’t have the commercial clout Cary Grant had in those days. Now people are home watching television. Do you think enough people still remember him? No, no, I don’t. But he didn’t care. He loved being a businessman. He was a co-owner of a Hollywood racetrack and went down there every day. He wanted to see people go through the turnstiles. The lms were, as he said, quoting [Alfred] Hitchcock, “just movies.”

Grant, Cannon and daughter Jennifer.

Do you agree with that sentiment? Oh God. I’ve done maybe 200 things in my career and only a handful of them were useful. I did Angels in America on the stage, which I did think changed people’s lives. And I continue to meet people who have read the Harry Potter books and seen the movies, and the stories from Hogwarts gave them hope. But I’m not sure anything else I’ve done on camera will live longer than a certain period of time. So, none of it matters. I mean, it matters to me. But I think experiences matter, too.

first-time fatherhood. “We had a lot of what I like to call ‘slow time’ together,” Jennifer says. Think backgammon, playing cards, reading the newspaper and talking about current events and taking drives to Palm Springs. (Still, she does note that dad and daughter once partied backstage at an Elton John concert!). Despite his retirement, “We didn’t go out a lot because anywhere we went, he attracted a crowd,” she says. “It was hard to get from the parking lot to the restaurant without 30 people wanting an autograph. It was still tricky for him to navigate the world because he was such a big star.”

SIX CLASSIC

CARY GRANT

PERFORMANCES

BRINGING UP BABY (1938) Nobody mastered madcap comedy quite like the former vaudeville performer. “I loved this movie,” Jennifer Grant says, “because I loved the farcical play between Katharine Hepburn and my dad.” He plays a bespectacled paleontologist nearing the completion of a brontosaurus skeleton. But to find the remaining bone—the intercostal clavicle!—he must team up with a whirlwind socialite (Hepburn). Naturally, mishaps galore befall them both during their adventure. This film marked the first of Grant’s five films with director Howard Hawks and the second with Hepburn (after 1935’s Sylvia Scarlett). They’d reunite again in 1938’s Holiday.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (1944)

Grant with Barbara Harris and daughter Jennifer.

HIS LAST ACT During his final years, Grant—now married to his fifth wife, Barbara Harris—started hosting a series of Q&A sessions with fans called A Conversation with Cary Grant. Ever so slowly, he began opening to the public and accepting himself. He was prepping for a show in Davenport, Iowa, in November 1986 when he died of a stroke. “I did get a sense that he was content at the end of his life,” says Jennifer, who was 20 at the time. “But I had the sense he was happy my whole life. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t without ups and downs. Nobody is untouchable. You know, he was a human being. And he was absolutely lovely.” 14 | NOVEMBER 26, 2023

Grant names this Frank Capra-directed surreal comedy as one of her favorites. Based on the long-running play (and a bit of a precursor to The Munsters and The Addams Family), it features Grant as the straight man dealing with the chaos around him. His Mortimer Brewster is trying to wed his fiancée (Priscilla Lane) when he learns that his two seemingly eccentric aunts are actually serial killers who serve arsenic-laced elderberry wine to put lonely old bachelors out of their misery. And just when things can’t get nuttier, a look-alike of Boris Karloff ’s Frankenstein monster shows up.

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957) This tear-jerking remake of 1939’s Love Affair received a pop-culture resurgence in the ’90s thanks to the rom-com Sleepless in Seattle. In case you forgot Rita Wilson’s tearful recap, here goes: Nickie (Grant), a playboy artist, meets Terry (Deborah Kerr) on an ocean liner while they’re both with other partners. When they get back to NYC, they make a pact to see one another again atop the Empire State Building in six months. Though tragedy strikes—Terry is struck by a car en route to meet him!—the two ultimately meet and live happily ever after. “It’s just brilliant,” Cannon says. “I still watch it and get goosebumps.”

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) The fourth and final collaboration between Grant and Alfred Hitchcock is also their most gripping. (“We had dinner with Alfred and his wife often,” Cannon says. “He loved Cary.”) Here, Grant stars as an ordinary whitecollar ad executive who’s mistaken for a secret agent named “George Kaplan.” He’s shortly kidnapped, taken to a Long Island estate, interrogated about being a spy and then left for dead via a fake drunk-driving accident. He ends up on a tense cross-country journey that includes a chase atop Mount Rushmore. And the menacing cropduster plane swooping over him in a cornfield remains an indelible American cinema moment.

CHARADE (1963) “What’s not to love about him in this movie?” Cannon says. “He’s handsome, funny, charming, identifiable and lovable.” In this Hitchcock-like, Parisian-set thriller, an interpreter (Audrey Hepburn) returns from a vacation in the Alps to learn that her husband has emptied out their apartment and got himself murdered while leaving town. Grant is terrific as a ne’er-do-well character who hides his true motivations throughout the movie. Despite a 25-year age gap between the stars, their chemistry is undeniable. Cannon adds that she became “very close friends” with Hepburn behind the scenes.

TO CATCH A THIEF (1955) Grant’s John Robie, a retired cat burglar known for snatching precious jewels, discovers that someone is impersonating him. His only way out of the mess is to catch the imposter in the act. The No. 1 suspect? A rich American widower ( Jessie Royce Landis) and her gorgeous daughter, Frances (Grace Kelly). A cat-and-mouse game ensues even as the attraction between John and Frances intensifies. “I love Grace and my dad in this movie,” says Jennifer Grant. “They fit together like a hand in glove.” Plus, she notes, “He really does move like a cat!”

PARADE

CARY ON PARADE

In 1961, Cary Grant, at the peak of his career at age 57, was on Parade’s cover to illustrate this story, “What Makes a Man Most Attractive to You?” In a national survey of women, respondents picked the top three things that made a man most attractive: kindness, personality and conversation won out. Intelligence was right up there too but many women denied that “looks” were all that important. Still, Grant was one of the two names mentioned as an example of an attractive man. “A really attractive guy,” said one Phoenix housewife,” is Cary Grant. He has everything a woman wants or needs, from money to romance.” The only man to top Grant? President John F. Kennedy. In 1985, Grant had embarked on a series of personal appearances, answering fan questions often in a packed theater. Parade caught up with Grant at one such gathering and later visited his home and enjoyed a Dodgers game with the former actor and his fifth wife, Barbara Harris. “At 81,” the magazine reported, “the actor is still as wry, witty, gentlemanly and full of life as ever.” He talked about his least favorite part (Arsenic and Old Lace) and his favorite costar (Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief): “Grace was not only astonishingly beautiful, she also had that incredible serenity. Yet, when she was in a scene with you, she was really with you. She was a superb actress.” Grant died of a stroke a year later at age 82. NOVEMBER 26, 2023 | 15

Unlike humans, mosquitos are cold-blooded creatures. This means they can’t regulate their body heat, so their temperature uctuates with the environment. They function best around 80°F, become lethargic around 60°F, and can’t function below 50°F or so, which I admit resembles quite a few humans I know. (Also, like humans, they function well all year round in the tropics, such as areas in South Florida!) In most areas of the country, what mosquitos do as winter approaches depends on their species. More than 200 types live in the United States, but in general, adult males die a few days after mating, which happens only once in a lifetime. Adult females—the ones who torment us with bites—also mate only once, but they live from a few weeks to a few months afterward. As the weather cools, some species deposit their last batch of eggs, which enter a state that suspends their development over the winter, before the adult females die and go on to that great stagnant pond in the sky. The eggs hatch when the weather gets warm again. Other species hibernate wherever they can nd a suitable spot, such as a hollow log or maybe your basement. In spring, they emerge and feed on their favorite animals, then lay a batch of eggs that will add to our collective unhappiness over the summer.

CLASSIC ASK MARILYN A QUESTION OF HORSES JULY 15, 2001

Ask Marilyn BY MARILYN VOS SAVANT

SOLUTIONS Answer: Yes, although some sculptors may be unaware of the tradition or choose to ignore it. A historian at Arlington National Cemetery explains that when both forelegs of the horse are in the air, the rider died in battle. When only one foreleg is raised, the rider died of his wounds afterward. And when all four legs are on the ground, the rider later died of unrelated causes. [UPDATE: This tradition seems borne out by several statues commemorating Gettysburg soldiers, but the majority of statues with horses do not follow the rule, and today historians believe it’s more myth or coincidence than fact.]
