ACADEMIC HERALDRY
A time-honored tradition of great dignity, the wearing of academic regalia dates back to the Middle Ages. Originating from ecclesiastical dress, these garments were first adopted by scholars in the 13th century at institutions such as the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. The tradition was brought to the United States during colonial times, notably by King’s College in New York, now Columbia University.
In 1895, American colleges and universities standardized academic dress through the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume, which remains the basis for regalia worn today. Academic attire consists of three primary elements: the gown, hood and cap.
The Gown
Gown styles vary by degree level. Bachelor’s gowns feature pointed sleeves, master’s gowns have long, closed sleeves with slits at the elbow, and doctoral gowns are distinguished by wide, open sleeves with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve.
The
Hood
The hood is the primary symbol of the degree earned and the institution granting it. It is worn draped over the shoulders and features velvet trim indicating the field of study, while the interior lining displays the colors of the awarding institution. Hood lengths vary by degree level and are worn only after the degree has been conferred.
The Cap
In American universities, graduates wear the traditional square mortarboard. Tassels may be black or reflect the wearer’s degree or rank, with doctoral tassels typically gold. Doctoral caps may also be made of velvet.
Institutional Colors
The colors displayed in academic hoods represent the institution where the degree was earned. Among those represented by the University of Mississippi School of Journalism and New Media faculty are universities such as Oregon, Florida, South Carolina, Northwestern, Missouri, Maryland, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Indiana, Tennessee, Nebraska and Kingston University London, among others.
The official colors of the University of Mississippi, red and blue, were introduced in 1893 by Professor Alexander Lee Bondurant and are reflected in the university’s academic regalia.
In addition to traditional regalia, many graduates wear cords and stoles recognizing academic achievement, leadership and involvement. A white stole signifies membership in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, while a gold cord represents induction into the Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism Honor Society. Academic honors are indicated by red and white braided cords: one cord for cum laude graduates, two cords for magna cum laude graduates and three cords for summa cum laude graduates.
Additional cords reflect involvement in student organizations, including baby blue for Talbert Fellows, navy for the Public Relations Student Society of America, black for Square Magazine, solid red for Ad Club and white and powder blue for School of Journalism and New Media Ambassadors.
Alma Mater
Way down south in Mississippi, There’s a spot that ever calls Where among the hills enfolded. Stand Old Alma Mater’s Halls. Where the trees lift high their branches, To the whisp’ring southern breeze. There Ole Miss is calling, calling, To our hearts fond memories. With united hearts we praise thee, All our loyalty is thine, And we hail thee, Alma Mater, may thy light forever shine; May it brighter grow and brighter, And with deep affection true, Our thoughts shall ever cluster ‘round thee, Dear Old Red and Blue. My thy fame throughout the nation, Through thy sons and daughters grow, May thy name forever waken, In our hearts a tender glow, May thy counsel and thy spirit, Ever keep us one in this, That our own shall be thine honor, Now and ever dear Ole Miss.
