for SATB chorus and piano (with optional tuned water glasses) At night in the meadow we lay the blanket down and fall back to watch the stars in their endless migration find the unyielding geometry of distance.

The tall grass of autumn does not tease our faces, nor does the dew wet our skin.

Out here, we remain untouched, you and I, wheeling in our own orbits of intractable light years and the lambent echoes of stars long dead that burned and burned, like we did.

There should be comfort in the gravity that pins me to this blanket like a butterfly, wings ashen under the airless glass of this hurtling universe; there should be comfort in knowing I don’t have to hold on.

The music of composer Michael Rickelton "seizes the ear" (Gramophone). An experienced composer of solo, chamber, and orchestral works, Michael has a particularly strong and critically-acclaimed affinity for the voice. "Rickelton writes with a distinctive and expansive voice. (Tom Hall - Music Director Emeritus - Baltimore Choral Arts Society). Michael's choral, solo, chamber, and orchestra works have been performed and broadcast throughout the United States and abroad. Recently, his works have been played by the Nashville Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and Peabody Symphony, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, the Pacific Chorale's John Alexander Singers, and the Choir of the Washington National Cathedral. Recent seasons have included stints as composer-in-residence with The Bridge Ensemble and St. David's Episcopal Church in Baltimore. His composition Pentecost for SATB chorus and piano was recently recorded by The John Alexander Singers and released on Delos records. Albany Records recently released Time and Memory, an album dedicated to Michael’s works for voice and piano. Michael is also an active performer and educator, serving on the music faculties of The Peabody Conservatory, The Johns Hopkins University, and Towson University. He currently resides in Baltimore with his wife and two sons.

Performance Notes PIANO Pedaling When desired, specific pedalings are indicated, including some passages of extended sustain.

Passages without pedal markins should be pedaled freely.

TUNED WATER GLASSES (optional) Water glasses should be prepared at pitches A4, B b4, D5, E5, and F5. Depending on the performance space, glasses one octave higher may also be used in addition to or in place of the notated pitches. The amount of glasses needed is left to the discretion of the conductor. An attempt should be made to balance the glasses in the performance space with the number of singers. The conductor may wish to have each pitch evenly represented, or they may decide to use more glasses of certain pitch depending on the performance space. Ties have not been included in the water glass part as an attempt to show clarity of pitch. Measures containing a pitch that exsist in the previous measure should be played continuously as if it is tied from the previous measure.
