Transportation

Rapid City is served by four commercial airlines. Mt. Rushmore Angus will be happy to furnish transportation from the airport if contacted in advance. If traveling by car, please refer to the map on the back cover.

First Year Breeding Season 100% Guarantee

All bulls selling for $3,500 or more will be covered 100% (less salvage value) by Mt. Rushmore Angus, if they are injured during their first breeding season and not able to return to service during that first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turn out of the bulls. 100% of the value of the injured bull, minus salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull if one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 1. This is not a mortality insurance, nor does it cover mismanagement or neglect. It does not cover injuries sustained prior to breeding season if your bull is turned out with other bulls.

Semen Testing

Bulls will have a breeding soundness evaluation (including semen test) done by Dr. Rhett Scoggin prior to delivery. All cattle to sell are guaranteed breeders by Mt. Rushmore Angus Ranch.

Terms & Conditions

All cattle will sell according to the terms recommended by the American Angus Association.

Delivery & Wintering

Free delivery to adjoining states. We will begin delivering bulls after March 20, so please have your facility ready to receive the bulls. We will winter bulls free of charge until deliver.

Genetic Testing

All bulls are genomically enhanced using AngusGS test. They are all free of defects recognized through the American Angus Association either through pedigree or testing.

Supplemental Information

Scrotal and up-to-date weights will be available sale day. Any information announced sale day takes precedence over any printed material.

Insurance

Available if you wish to insure your purchase.

Retained Interest

We will retain 1/3 semen interest in all bulls selling.

On February 24th, we invite you to attend our annual production sale, here at the ranch. Please review the information provided and take the time to come inspect early and ask questions at your leisure. The bulls will again be sold in a video format, this year. Pictures were taken in mid-January and videos were recorded in early February. The videos will be posted, sometime within two weeks before the sale. Each year presents us with different challenges and 2020 was no exception to the rule. It was dry, but we are grateful for timely rains, which God provided to get us through. Numerous times this fall, customers and neighbors reported calf weights that were lighter than normal. We were impacted in this manner. Our herd is managed in large groups, on native pasture, with no creep. As a result, our calves reflected the conditions of the year and that can be seen in some of the 205-day weights. We know without a doubt, these bulls reflect as much performance as you have come to expect from us and in some cases they will have more. These bulls have been bred with as much precision as possible. We always start with a base genetic focus of structural soundness, optimum birth weights and bold weaning weights. Enhancements are made with strong maternal strength and cutting-edge carcass characteristics. These bulls are packed with as much genetic performance, maternal strength and carcass quality as any offering we have had. We know you will see that as you review the catalog. February 24th will mark our 55th annual production sale and our first time in decades to sell without Lynn Weishaar as our auctioneer. Mt. Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

MT. RUSHMORE ANGUS RANCH PRODUCTION SALE

Combined Value ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid. Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $W increases weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mpg, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb. may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

Angus bulls have long been known for their paramount calving ease. If you are breeding heifers, Angus is the go-to breed of choice. But what about the so-called “big” birth weight Angus bulls - where do they fit in? The vast majority of mature cows calve unassisited - it is pretty rare for a mature cow to need assistance, except for abnormal deliveries (backwards, breech, twins, etc.). Data reported to the AAA shows that 99% of Angus cows, second calf or beyond, calve unassisited and only 1% need some type of assistance (abnormal deliveries excluded from this data.) Back to the question at hand: where do the “big” birth weight Angus bulls fit in? Example: If you have a bull with a Birth EPD of +5, he would be 3.2 pounds heavier than the average (breed average BW EPD 1.8) (5-1.8 = 3.2 pounds difference.) However, his superior growth EPDs mean he will wean bigger calves and put way more money in your pocket than the average Angus bull!
