Transportation: Rapid City is served by four commercial airlines. Mt. Rushmore Angus will be happy to furnish transportation from the airport if contacted in advance. If traveling by car, please refer to the map on the back cover.

First Year Breeding Season 100% Guarantee: All bulls selling for $3,500 or more will be covered 100% (less salvage value) by Mt. Rushmore Angus, if they are injured during their first breeding season and not able to return to service during that first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turn out of the bulls. 100% of the value of the injured bull, minus salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull if one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made

by September 1. This is not a mortality insurance, nor does it cover mismanagement or neglect. It does not cover injuries sustained prior to breeding season if your bull is turned out with other bulls.

Semen Testing: Bulls will have a breeding soundness evaluation (including semen test) done

by Dr. Rhett Scoggin prior to delivery. All cattle to sell are guaranteed breeders by Mt. Rushmore Angus Ranch.

Terms & Conditions: All cattle will sell according to the terms recommended by the American Angus Association.

Delivery & Wintering: Free delivery to adjoining states. We will begin delivering bulls after March 20, so please have your facility ready to receive the bulls. We will winter bulls free of charge until deliver.

Genetic Testing: All bulls are genomically enhanced using AngusGS test. They are all free of defects recognized through the American Angus Association either through pedigree or testing.

Supplemental Information: Scrotal and up-to-date weights will be available sale day. Any information announced sale day takes precedence over any printed material.

Insurance: Available if you wish to insure your purchase.

Retained Interest: We will retain 1/3 semen interest in all bulls selling.

Lunch: Available beginning at 11:30 a.m. on sale day, compliments of Mt. Rushmore Angus Ranch.

The option to view the sale online from the comforts of your choosing is part of our busy lives. The videos will be posted sometime within the two weeks before the sale. The pictures were taken towards the end of January and videos first part of February. With the technology available to us as producers any more, the data we can collect on these animals is endless. Mt. Rushmore Angus Ranch Production Sale

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

We selected Reno as an EPD booster in all aspects of production. He is a proven bull with over 800 progeny turned in for birth weights. The cattle are moderate in frame with exceptional calving ease. BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.

Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mpg, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb. may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease.

Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

Angus bulls have long been known for their paramount calving ease. If you are breeding heifers, Angus is the go-to breed of choice. But what about the so-called “big” birth weight Angus bulls - where do they fit in? The vast majority of mature cows calve unassisited - it is pretty rare for a mature cow to need assistance, except for abnormal deliveries (backwards, breech, twins, etc.). Data reported to the AAA shows that 99% of Angus cows, second calf or beyond, calve unassisited and only 1% need some type of assistance (abnormal deliveries excluded from this data.) Back to the question at hand: where do the “big” birth weight Angus bulls fit in? Example: If you have a bull with a Birth EPD of +5, he would be 3.2 pounds heavier than the average (breed average BW EPD 1.8) (5-1.8 = 3.2 pounds difference.) However, his superior growth EPDs mean he will wean bigger calves and put way more money in your pocket than the average Angus bull! The moral of the story: If you are breeding mature cows to an Angus bull, don’t make birth weight be your focus.
