A NOTE FROM RPI PROMOTIONS

A number of factors will add into a rancher having a successful bull buying experience. Naturally, if you would get every bull you picked out of the top of a sale, you would write it down as a very successful bull buying experience.

You get the top blood line, top performance and calving ease bulls you made three stars on, wow it can’t get any better than that! The first thing that comes to mind is “why.” Why did I get them so reasonable? How did a guy like me get a set of bulls that should have brought more than I could pay. You could go with just being in the right place at the right time. That might not be a very consistent bull buying plan.

Don’t count on this senerio to play out all the time. You are not the only cattleman after the top bulls in the sale. You might get a few bulls, that you have marked down in the “must buy pen,” purchased at a reasonable price now and then, but don’t be afraid to use aggressive bidding attention and get a some of the bulls you marked that will improve your cowherd.

Price does matter and everyone has to live within their means. By studying the sale offering, finding the bulls that will influence your cow herd and still maintain the chosen weight of your calves at sale time is the best bull buying experience you can have. Quality can return the most profit to the bottom line. A bull that has high maternal characteristics may be the difference in four or five more calves from the lifetime of the individual cows he has sired.

Culling cows in the heart of their productive life can be very expensive.

If you sell all your steers and heifers at weaning time, then there are a number of traits within the breeds to look at. There are high carcass and performance bulls selling that have proven data behind them. The bull’s phenotype should still play into the equation of the purchase. There are bulls selling that will enhance many of the important traits to move your program forward.

I do believe there are bulls for sale that will fit everyone’s program. As you look through this month’s Cattlemen’s Invite you will find some very progressive breeders who have years and years of breeding and selecting the top bloodlines, top performance and calving ease bulls money can buy. Using their experience and genetics that have been time tested could result in your next successful bull buying experience. There is an abundance of information available on the bulls offered today. I challenge you to use those trait leading genetics as a tool among many, to find the bulls suited for your program and environment. Give those astute breeders a call and visit with them about their offering. They want to make sure your investment in this year’s set of bulls, is the best experience you have had.
