Welcome Cattlemen & Women, to our 23rd Annual Bull Sale!

Another year has gone by and things are still good in the cattle business. Not as good as last year, but still well into the profit margin. Charolais cross feeders are still bringing more dollars per head, and using this cross is still a great way to earn extra profit from your ranch.

THANK YOU to everyone who bought and bid in last year's sale, which was our most successful ever. The new vests are on their way!

Our Producer of the Year recognition this year is Brady and Monte Schofield of Midland. They sell an outstanding set of calves every fall at Ft. Pierre – consistently weaning steers around 700 pounds off the cow! They receive a $2000 discount at this or any future sale. Congratulations to these fine Cattlemen and the other 8 families who have been rewarded this in the past as well. It's a pleasure to have been able to sell bulls to some of the finest cattlemen and women in the nation over the last 23 years and we're proud to have been a small part of your success.

There were three pretty major events around this outfit over the past year...

We've had a wedding in the family in June and I'm proud The Deering Bunch … left to right, John Wayne, Sheridan, to introduce my daughter Cheyenne's husband, John Luke Joel, James, Kandi, Daniel, Cheyenne, John Luke, Autumn McGriff. He's a great young man – humble and very hard working.

I'm also limping a lot less thanks to a new left hip! Wow – what a relief. If any of you have any knees or hips that need attention I highly recommend Dr. Gould in Spearfish. Not dealing with that pain anymore has truly changed my outlook on things.

Also, the flooding we dealt with in May and June along the Cheyenne not only destroyed tons of fence, it caused lots of frustration due to about 2/3 of our cow herd getting stranded on the East side. The bottoms were basically a muddy mess and the Cheyenne was not safe for cows to cross till the middle of July and thus were not able to get the stock moved to Summer pasture on the West side until about a month and a half late. Cattle on the West side after the flooding couldn't be moved off Winter grounds either because of the high levels in Box Elder Creek.

Critters were kind of "stranded on an island …" We ended up losing an estimated 6 calves, 3 cows and 1 bull. Not too bad considering how bad the flooding was but they sure needed to get to fresh grass and I know it affected weaning performance of this group of bulls a bit, as there wasn't much for Momma to eat for a while.

We are again feeding a bull challenger pellet from CHS, which shoots for a gain of 3.5 to 4 pounds a day, maximizing muscle development and keeps joints and feet together as well. I'm proud of how this group has been coming along .

Added in the last year have been 9 new herd bulls, including two more calving ease/growth bulls from Oakwater, 2 really maternal/growth bulls from Wienk Charolais, the 2015 Reserve and the 2016 Grand Champion bulls from the BHSS, and also 2 Ledger- bred bulls I'm pretty excited about. SRSC Olaf was a pretty awesome "Turton" son we purchased in 2015 from Sellman's that evidently didn't know how to swim – a pretty important requirement for survival around this outfit!

More on these guys next year, but we're pretty excited about the "new blood" around here, and with the added herd bulls are looking at approximately 150 purebred bull calves hitting the ground this Spring and a roughly 100 head of yearlings for sale in '17.
