SPADOLINI 90M SUPERYACHT

The very distinctive lines of this sports superyacht designed by Tomaso Spadolini could well make one forget that it is a 90-metre yacht. Capable of speeds of over 20 knots, this yacht, in keeping with the owner’s wishes, was also designed to offer its guests the impression of being in close contact with the sea, despite its size. The second vital requirement expressed by the owner was to ensure total privacy for both guests and the crew. To comply with this request, Spadolini pushed the concept to the extreme by creating a deck entirely dedicated to the owner, with equally private access. Two stairways and an elevator enable guests to reach the sundeck from the main deck, including an outdoor stairway, so that the serenity of the deck entirely reserved for the owner is not disturbed. It is comprised of a gigantic suite with a 270° view towards the bow, His and Hers bathrooms, two walk-in closets, a wine cellar, a smoking lounge with a humidor, and a private sitting-room. An outdoor lounge area in front of the swimming pool completes

What’s new

the layout of this deck. Sliding doors in the lobby and pantry allow for the owners’ suite to be completely isolated. The curved lines sloping gently towards the stern meet the request for a feeling of being close to the sea, which is also true of the beach club occupying the rear of the main deck and that of the lower deck. The 7 x 3 metre infinity pool offers bathers an unimpeded view of the sea. A lounge of 150 sq.m (1,615 sq.ft) is accompanied by a bar, gym, sauna, and a relaxation area.

ROYAL HUISMAN – NILAYA

To meet the request of its client wanting to cruise with the lightest and fastest large sailing yacht possible, Nauta Design called upon Royal Huisman and architects Reichel-Pugh. Royal Huisman has, in fact, just perfected its patented ‘‘Featherlight’’ construction method enabling an 11% decrease in overall weight as compared to typical aluminium construction. The global approach of this method is to pinpoint the project’s tiniest details allowing for reductions in weight. The deck and superstructures are

thus made of carbon, along with the mast and sail rigging designed by Rondal to reduce drag. The owner and all the participants do not hide their satisfaction in having designed and built the lightest and most powerful yacht for this size (47metres), thus opening up the path to superyachts of very high performance.

PEGASUS

Revolutionary, to say the least, this concept took shape in the mind of Jozeph Forakis while daydreaming on a Greek beach. The view of clouds floating above the waterline but leaving no negative visual impact led him to reflect upon, and design, a yacht endowed with the same virtues. To make the 88-metre yacht ‘‘virtually invisible’’, the architect used robotic 3D to create a mesh framework integrating both hull and superstructure. To maintain direct contact with surrounding nature, he designed superstructures comprised of multi-tiered, ephemeral glass wings reflecting the clouds and sky. These glass wings also contribute towards the production of clean energy thanks to solar panels generating electricity and electrolyzers extracting H2 from seawater. The electricity is stored in Li-ion batteries to power the propulsion pods and all instruments, as well as the many appliances and systems required for living on board. As for the yacht’s interior, the elegant interlacing forming the superstructure allows light to enter abundantly, offering its occupants a 300° view and a guarantee of privacy thanks to mirrored glass. In homage to nature, the centerpiece is comprised of the magnificent ‘‘Tree of Life’’

What’s new

emerging from a pool, surrounded by a hydroponic Zen garden on the lower deck, and rising upwards through all four levels. In this environment worthy of a Garden of Eden, guests are provided with fresh food and air purification from a source of living nature.

TILLBERG DESIGN

The success encountered by cruise organizers has led Swedish designer Tillberg to conjure up a voyager boasting all the assets of liners transposed to a 207-metre megayacht. At the request of the ‘‘Four Seasons’’ luxury hotel group, Tillberg Design has presented a yacht

whose design borrows inspiration from the legendary Christina O owned by Aristotle Onassis. For the ‘‘Four Seasons Yacht’’, the Hot Lab studio, renowned for yacht interiors of refined luxury, has created amenities blending stylishness with guest-centric design. The superyacht will propose 95 suites shared out over 14 decks, and the rear deck will host a 20-metre pool whose base can be raised to become a dance floor or reception area. This project confirms the strong trend for modern yachting and the preponderant place occupied by luxury yacht-liners. Fincantieri has been entrusted with its construction.

BRITANNIA VITRUVIUS AEOLUS SUPERYACHT PROJECT

VITRUVIUS YACHTS

When the British government invited designers to devote their attention to the next Royal Yacht, replacing the venerable Britannia, Vitruvius Yachts, a London-based naval design studio launched and directed by Philippe Briand, presented its project, immediately placing it at the top of the list of competing designers. The destiny of this future yacht was to encompass many vocations: as an itinerant ambassador, a reflection of English expertise and technology, perfectly in sync with its era thanks to its minor impact on the environment, zero carbon propulsion, and being modular in order to carry out all kinds of assignments from diplomacy to humanitarian, or receptions. The project christened ‘‘Team FestivAl’s National Flagship’’ brought together the best enterprises and talents to ensure that this contemporary yacht would be exemplary in every respect.

What’s new

AEOLUS

Dutch yacht builder Oceanco presented its AEOLUS Superyacht project at the Dubai International Boat Show. In homage to the Greek god, its curved linear profile which seems to have been sculpted by the wind leaves no one indifferent. AEOLUS lies at the crossroads of majestic elegance and structural efficiency, offering feminine curves but also clear signs of virility, achieving a subtle sense of balance. This yacht of the future aims to be exemplary, using the most recent technologies for energy production and propulsion while retaining the possibility of adaptation to upcoming technical solutions. The design of its interior adopts the same approach, opting solely for natural or recycled materials, all perfectly traceable. Cactus leather alternatives by Desserto, for example, are given pride of place, contributing to the cocooning ambiance to which the decorator has given precedence.

DAMEN YACHTING

On March 3rd, the Dutch yacht builder Damen launched the third Amels 60. This 60-metre yacht embodies the very essence of the future of Superyachting. Entrusted to the talented and creative Espen Oino, its design combines heritage from previous generations of yachts with the most recent developments. The Amels 60’s wide success can be explained by its overall line, both classic and modern, and an interior giving an impression of spaciousness. The exterior areas are just as generous with a vast sun deck, a bathing platform, and a retractable balcony for the owner’s suite. Storage space is equally ample, enabling the yacht to accommodate a luxurious ninemetre tender beneath the fore deck. State-of-the-art hybrid propulsion ensures that the yacht attains a high level of performance while offering admirable comfort.

This superyacht has become a real icon since it was launched by the Perini Navi shipyard in 2008. Two colossal refits in 2022 and 2023 have further enhanced her appointments, particularly thanks to a gleaming hull repaint, extensive interior upgrades and refreshed decor. The suites and cabins have also been refurbished, making it hard to choose between the full-beam master suite on the lower deck with two bathrooms and a hot tub, or the VIP suite with its new round bed and a private deck giving direct access to the terrace and walk-around side decks. FEADSHIP CATCH
SINCE ITS CREATION, FEADSHIP HAS PURSUED A SINGLE OBSESSION: A QUEST FOR PERFECTION.

Builders of legends

SELECTING JUST TWO SHIPYARDS OF THIS KIND, EACH ONE IN ITS OWN SECTOR OF THE SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY, IS NOT AN EASY TASK. OUR CHOICE FINALLY CAME TO REST ON THESE TWO MAJOR NAMES.

No connoisseur will deny the fact that this historic shipyard belongs to the Valhalla of the Netherlands’ yacht builders. Founded in 1949, Feadship was initially comprised of several shipyards together with the De Voogt Naval Architects studio. Today, the Royal Van Lent Shipyard and Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw are the two shipbuilders producing the Feadship. The historic De Voogt studio has designed many elegant yachts including the famous and inimitable Feadship Classic. Forty years after the launch of ‘‘Catch’’ (26.60m), the company’s naval architecture still bears the De Voogt signature, and the lines of yachts on the drawing board (EXPV-87m) or the Project 823 (67.40m) demonstrate Feadship’s capacity to adapt to new trends while preserving all its original attributes. Since its creation, Feadship has pursued a single obsession: a quest for perfection from a yacht’s design to its finishing touches. In Boat International’s last World Superyacht Awards in Istanbul on May 20th, 2023, Feadship was awarded three awards: for the 42m ‘‘Callisto’’ in the semi-displacement category, a Gold Neptune denoting a Judges’ Special Award for ‘‘Shinkai’’, and a Judges’ Special Award also won by ‘‘Juice’’. ‘‘We don’t build yachts quickly, we build them perfectly.’’

HOLLAND, THE PROMISED LAND

According to legend, the Flying Dutchman is condemned to sail the seas until the very end of time. For centuries, the Dutch always seem to have been driven by this obsession with building boats of very high quality. The heritage of their pragmatic ancestors, building boats more dedicated to trading and transport than to wars of conquest, yacht construction in the Netherlands of today bears no comparison with that of other major players in this sector.

THE ONEIRIC PROJECT DEMONSTRATES THE ROSSINAVI’S CAPACITY TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE.

ROSSINAVI

Since the 1970’s, Italy’s Rossi Shipyard, now become ROSSINAVI, has never lost sight of its family vocation. It has an innate passion based on the desire for each yacht it builds to be irreproachable for both excellent craftsmanship in its construction and finishes, and its seafaring qualities. Over the decades, ROSSINAVI has built a real fleet of yachts of different kinds and in different styles, displacement and semi-displacement models, and yachts of a more sporting character. In collaboration with top designer Pininfarina, ROSSINAVI proposes Supersport 50-60 and Aurea 70 yachts for dedicated fans of speed while projecting itself into the future, as illustrated by its projects. Eco-responsible yachting lies at the core of its concerns, and the future is well and truly on the cards. The ONEIRIC project demonstrates this shipyard’s capacity to focus on the future without disowning any of its shipbuilding culture. All ROSSINAVI achievements are Custom yachts corresponding in every respect to the shipbuilder’s requirements and desires down to the very last detail. In four decades, this family-run shipyard has joined the elite of builders and become a real benchmark. 

RESPONDING TO TODAY’S NEED TO DRASTICALLY SHRINK THE USE OF INDUSTRIALLY PRODUCED MATERIALS, MANUFACTURERS NOW SEE NATURAL AND RENEWABLE MATERIALS AS AN ABSOLUTE MUST.

ORGANIC AND RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

Whether they are intended for jets, yachts or homes, interior fixtures and fittings are undergoing a real revolution. The way in which indoor volumes are designed now focuses on transforming a vision into reality, form must correspond as closely as possible to function, and it is in this area that research is well underway. Weight reduction is also a matter of real importance, especially on board jets, but also yachts. Carbon fibre has been widely adopted for several years, though the main goal among designers and manufacturers is the possibility of using recyclable materials. As a substitute for carbon fibre, plant or vegetable fibres are regularly chosen to create surfaces and items not involving structural support.

FROM CRAFTSMANSHIP TO INDUSTRY

While a good number of workshops retain their mastery of producing fixtures and fittings thanks to the talent and craftsmanship of their carpenters and cabinetmakers, builders of superyachts also call on renowned outfitters such as Metrica Interiors, established in several countries over the yearsand delivering interiors for large yachts at industrial level. In this sector, smaller enterprises are

sought after for their expertise in more personalised design, using composite materials as well as new metallic materials. Some of their creations are real works of art with decorative appeal, and jet manufacturers are especially appreciative of the finesse and lightness of these metals.

At the cutting edge of the search for new materials, the Austrian firm F/LIST was recently applauded for its work on the use of organic materials specifically intended for aircraft interiors. Production of these decorative materials calls on technologies as far apart as those used by jewellers and the aerospace industry, at the spearhead of processes based on chemistry. Several new materials are already on the market. Designed for all types of surfaces, AENIGMA can be found on a residence’s driveway, the floor of a yacht or that of a jet, lending itself to all styles of decor. Based on plants, WHISPER is a flexible textile both light and fine that looks rather like leather and can be applied on all kinds of surfaces. These new materials offer boundless scope for use in the home, on jets and yachts. 

A 46M CATAMARAN

Designing a catamaran capable of welcoming 2,000 people on board per day is an extremely ambitious challenge. This trail-blazing architectural and naval project is headed up by Axel de Beaufort and architect Guillaume Verdier, a specialist in monohulls, backed by a group of naval architects and designers. Currently undergoing completion in the Admiral Yachts shipyards in Italy, the world’s largest catamaran (46.5 m long/55 m tall) brings together innovative materials, craftsmen and expertise of sheer excellence. A real work of art, designed as a museum afloat, the yacht will fly the French flag and meet stringent environmental and technological criterias. A sailing catamaran, the ARTEXPLORER museum boat will be fitted with solar panels to cover part of its energy requirements.

AMBASSADOR FOR THE ARTS AND PEDAGOGY

On its voyage around the Mediterranean scheduled from autumn 2023 to 2025, ARTEXPLORER will make roughly 20 ports-of-call in 15 different countries, bringing together artists, curators, cultural and educational organisations, to present in close partnership a new, present-day vision of the Mediterranean coast. Artists-in-residence will be welcomed on board this impressive catamaran tomeet up with scientists, thinkers and curators in each region. On the upper deck, visitors

will be invited to enjoy an immersive, sensory experience, lounging in comfort on sun loungers. This physical and emotional experience will offer a unique discovery of the Mediterranean through new soundscapes, real, imaginary, and even a sonic Odyssey. The programme designed for the ARTEXPLORER catamaran is accompanied on the quayside by pavilions of 3,000 sqm designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, dedicated to multi-disciplinary exhibitions, and an agora stage for performances, lectures, screenings and concerts.

A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FESTIVAL

Superyacht Chef Competition

The 2023 edition of this prestigious confrontation kept all its promises, as illustrated by exquisite dishes prepared by chefs with sturdy sea legs. In the setting provided by its training centre, ‘‘La Belle Classe Academy’’, dedicated to professionals in prestige yachting, Monaco’s Yacht Club joined up once again with Bluewater to ensure the success of this unique culinary contest supervised by Chef Joël Garault, ‘‘Président des Goûts et Saveurs’’, awarding a place of honour to gastronomy at sea. Nine chefs deploying their talents on yachts of over 40m participated in the 2023 competition presided by Chef Yannick Alléno, holder of three stars in the Michelin Guide.

Backed by their yacht owners and crews, contenders are required to concoct the finest dish from a mystery basket of ingredients that they only discover a few minutes before the start of the contest. Comprised of three rounds lasting 40 minutes each, the defining feature of this competition is high performance focusing on imagination, flexibility and responsiveness. The organizers have also added an anti-waste requirement

whereby all the ingredients contained in the basket must be used in order to avoid a penalty. Marco Tognon (M/Y Planet Nine-73m) succeeded in unfurling a treasure trove of creativity, proposing a ‘‘Ceviche’’ of blue Brittany lobster, caviar and avocado mousse with Parmesan cheese, accompanied by Chantilly cream with vodka and a pod of vanilla. Yannick Alliéno said he was bowled over by the chefs’ performances: ‘‘This competition has been a whirlwind of emotions, a real show, and an exceptional experience. These chefs are capable of adapting to requirements in incredible ways, their technique is outstanding.’’

MONACO, CAPITAL OF LUXURY YACHTING

This event highlighting the best of gastronomy and prestige yachting is held in the training centre, ‘‘La Belle Classe Academy’’. ‘‘This prestigious event attracts professionals, but also the general public,’’ says Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco. ‘‘It allows another aspect of professions in the world of yachting to be unveiled.’’

To end this outstanding vintage, a gala dinner brought together guests and jury members including a yacht owner, Susana Perdiguero De Segovia, for the first time.

THE WORLD OF SUPERYACHTS IS ALSO THAT OF HIGH GASTRONOMY. THIS YEAR AGAIN, THE COMPETITION BETWEEN CHEFS ON BOARD SUPERYACHTS ATTAINED THE HIGHEST LEVEL.

The quay that lives up to its name

THANKS TO AN EXTENSIVE RENOVATION UNDERTAKEN BY THE ATELIER D’ARCHITECTURE PHILIPPE PROST, LE QUAI DES MILLIARDAIRES AND THE IYCA NEIGHBOURHOOD HAVE BEEN GIVEN A NEW LEASE OF LIFE.

UNPRECEDENTED INFRASTRUCTURES

After being treated to a real metamorphosis, the Quai Camille Rayon, a quayside unique in the Mediterranean, 150 metres long, provides accommodation for up to 20 Superyachts from 70m. Controlled on a 24/7 basis, its entrance guarantees full security and total privacy for these exclusive clients throughout their stay. Specific services have been developed and modern infrastructures installed for this international clientele, including suction vacuum pumping for grey and black water, fibre-optic, and enhanced electrical power. The life of crews on a stopover has not been neglected: thanks to the creation of private handiwork areas and shaded relaxation zones, they can enjoy barbecues and sports activities in the open air while admiring the view of the hinterland. The specific services from which clients can benefit include private access (ISPS), a concierge service, VIP pontoons, catering and special events areas, and the loan of small electric vehicles.

INTERNATIONAL YACHT CLUB OF ANTIBES

The most spectacular part of this renovation is the remarkable metamorphosis of the International Yacht Club of Antibes. Drawing inspiration from Explorer-style ships, its overall architecture offers top amenities and spaces for the Quai Camille Rayon clientele. The new IYCA enables clients looking for

discretion to benefit from a premium, personalised reception in the heli-pad lounge next to the heli-station. Two panoramic terraces with a total surface area of 700 sqm offer unimpeded views of the Fort Carré, the marina and the bay of Antibes for clients and members, who can also take advantage of the privacy of a lounge bar and meeting-rooms. The Crew Center also offers a lounge, a gym and a training studio.

The IYCA proposes a comprehensive array of mooring options in both summer and winter, and an extremely competent team is on hand all year round to welcome its clients for short or longer stays. In charge of management, the Vauban 21 company has teamed up with the renowned firms of Burgess and Edmiston to propose long-term guaranteed use contracts (CGUs) for berths on Quai Camille Rayon.

Nestling at the heart of the French Riviera, with a rich and historic architectural heritage, Port Vauban writes another chapter in its tale by incorporating contemporary advances. Undergoing constant improvement, the marina is gradually becoming the most attractive destination on the Côte d’Azur. And the completion of this perfectly mastered renovation underscores the position of Port Vauban as the N°1 high-end yachting centre in the Mediterranean. 

A high-performance business jet

A NEW BENCHMARK IN BUSINESS AVIATION, THE FALCON 6X BOASTS A SPACIOUS, ULTRA-COMFORTABLE CABIN. IN THE LATEST OFFERING FROM THE FRENCH MANUFACTURER, THIS NEW-GENERATION CABIN IS THE TALLEST AND WIDEST ON THE MARKET.

This year, Dassault Aviation whose head office is in SaintCloud, in the Parisian region, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its Falcon business jets. Its first client, Pan American Airlines, gave it immediate credibility in the American market. These past 60 years have been marked by a plethora of technological advances in civil aviation, innovations often derived from the French manufacturer’s military aircraft programmes.

Announced in February, 2018, the 6X redefines the long-range business jet segment. It completed its certification programme last May, with over 1,500 flight hours and 600 test flights. It is scheduled to enter into service in the coming weeks. With an intercontinental flight range of 5,500 nm, (10,186 km), the Falcon 6X can, for example, connect Paris to Hong Kong nonstop. This twin-jet aircraft benefits from a new-generation digital flight control system after the one introduced for the first time on the Falcon 7X series in 2005. Part of a rich accumulation of innovations and new technologies, the profile of its flight control system, benefiting from flaperons (flaps that double as ailerons) on each wing, is a significant feature, directly inherited from fighter planes. It enables the jet to enhance roll control and kill

lift without losing speed or drag. Furthermore, the system allows the 6X to improve control on steep approaches and provide smoother touchdowns on short runways. Another of the many innovations specific to Dassault, the FalconEye combined vision system will be a standard feature ensuring enhanced safety and situational awareness on approaches in darkness or poor weather. As with all Falcons, the 6X offers superior operating flexibility. It is powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney PW812D engines, offering significant improvements in fuel efficiency and carbon emissions. The spacious cabin with its flowing design, 1.98 m tall and 2.58 m wide, focuses on passenger comfort. Special attention has been given to light and panoramic views, with a skylight at the entrance and 30 extralarge windows. “The first 6X flight simulator has been certified and is ready to welcome and train the first pilots. Meanwhile, the maintenance network is getting ready for the jet to enter into service. The first teams of technicians are qualified and ready to take action worldwide.

Everything is in place for a harmonious start,” declared Éric Trappier, CEO of Dassault Aviation, at the press conference held at the EBACE business aviation fair in Geneva on May 22nd, 2023. 

80 TH ANNIVERSARY OF ‘‘LE PETIT PRINCE’’

Organised by the Air Aventures association, the Toulouse Tarfaya/Cape Juby Rally staged its second edition from May 18th to 27th, 2023, in the steps of ‘‘The Little Prince’’, a masterpiece whose 80th anniversary of the first publication worldwide is being celebrated this year. With the support of the ‘‘Fondation Antoine de Saint Exupéry pour la Jeunesse’’ (FASEJ), some 15 crews took to the air from the ToulouseLasbordes aerodrome on May 18th, 2023, for the second year running, to pay tribute to Aero-Postal Pioneers. For 10 full days, they flew

over France, Spain and Morocco. This year, the Rally was attended by Olivier d’Agay, grand-nephew of the author of ‘‘Le Petit Prince’’, who became for the occasion ‘‘chef d’aéroplace’’ at the Tarfaya/Cape Juby stopover, a position occupied by Antoine de Saint Exupéry from 1927 to 1929. Olivier d’Agay was accompanied by three heroes in aviation. Bertrand Piccard, Swiss explorer and environmentalist, sponsor of the FASEJ, who codeveloped and copiloted the Solar Impulse plane, on which he completed a world tour. Dorine Bourneton, aviator, sponsor of the FASEJ, the first handicapped woman aerobatics pilot in the world, who had already

landed five times in Tarfaya with the Toulouse Saint-Louis Rally, from 1995 to 1999. And finally, Jean-Marc Probst, the world’s greatest collector of ‘‘Le Petit Prince’’ books, who finances new translations with his Foundation. For this second edition of the Rally, the ‘‘Fondation Antoine de Saint Exupéry pour la Jeunesse’’ gave its backing to a crew of young pilots from the Mermoz Academy, called ‘‘Cape Juby - Sand and Stars’’.

THE G800 MAKES ITS DEBUT IN EUROPE

The latest addition to the fleet of the American aircraft company Gulfstream arrives in Europe. The G800 business jet made its first continental appearance at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE), held in Geneva at the end of May, 2023. This first G800 test aircraft flew from Savannah in Georgia, USA, to Geneva, using a blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the private stock of the Gulfstream aircraft company. Powered by high-thrust Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines, and thanks to wings and winglets designed in-house, the G800 can cover a maximum distance of 14,816 kilometres, making it the world’s longest-range business aircraft, at an average speed of Mach 0.85. This powerhouse performer also benefits from Gulfstream’s Symmetry Flight Deck, and the industry’s most breakthrough technology for touch screens. The cabin can be designed to create up to four separate living areas, and offers the possibility of transporting up to 19 passengers with a dedicated crew compartment and sleeping facilities for ten passengers. Finally, the G800 jet boasts a cutting-edge system for 100% fresh air, never recycled, and a plasma-ionization clean air system. Its cabin altitude is the lowest in the industry.

The fine art of personalisation

WITH MULLINER, ITS HISTORIC PERSONAL COMMISSIONING DIVISION, THE BRITISH MANUFACTURER BENTLEY PROPOSES ITS LATEST GT IN DIFFERENT UNIVERSES INSPIRED BY THE COSMOS.

For almost a century, Mulliner has achieved high distinction in the field of bespoke coachbuilding and interior craftsmanship for Bentley’s most prestigious models. Today, operating as the brand’s personal commissioning division, it is entrusted with the task of curating and crafting bespoke features and options for Bentley’s entire range of vehicles. This exclusive service enables the most demanding clients to benefit from unrivaled luxury and personalisation, giving them the possibility to commission fittings and finishes that are totally unique.

In 2022, Mulliner made a deep impression with its latest masterpiece, the Bentley Batur, revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. Like its predecessor, the Bacalar, the newcomer is named after a beautiful stretch of water, Lake Batur on the island of Bali. Powered by an exceptional incarnation of Bentley’s 6-litre twin-turbo W12 engine, this new GT delivers an incredible output of 740PS, accompanied by maximum torque of 1000 Nm. It is quite simply the most powerful Bentley ever produced to date. The 2-seat Batur has been designed to convey the sleeker, more minimalist esthetic vision of future models to be created by the legendary manufacturer based in Crewe, which will accompany the electrification of its range. The Bentley Batur is also a significant first step towards the way in which future

models will be made, especially with regard to materials and ecological techniques, presenting an exciting, more sustainable vision of Bentley’s future.

To give a glimpse of the potential offered by the Batur’s tailormade personalisation, the Colours, Materials and Finishes team has taken inspiration from the cosmos to create new combinations of shades and finishes. Nebula, Supernova, Hyperspace, Dark Matter…, four versions that illustrate to perfection the exceptional ability of the Mulliner division to turn the dreams of even the most perfectionist client, into reality. The Batur also pushes back the limits of innovation in terms of materials, notably with its introduction of revolutionary natural composites made from flax. Comprised of sustainable super-fibres, this unprecedented material,

both strong and light, replaces traditional carbon fibre. Leathers used in the GT’s interior also come from sustainable sources and are developed using a process requiring much less water and aldehyde than traditional tanning. Leather-like textiles made from by-products of the coffee roasting process can also be selected, together with carpets crafted from recycled yarn. Meeting the strictest standards of performance and sustainability, the development programme of the Bentley Batur has just been completed. A production run of only 18 models will be built in the Mulliner workshops. Already sold out, each one will benefit from an outstanding level of craftsmanship in around four months of handmade production, which should be completed by the end of 2024. 

LAFFITE AUTOMOBILI REVOLUTIONIZES THE ELECTRIC HYPERCAR

After several years of investment, research and development, Lafitte Automobili made a high profile entrance on the automobile scene by unveiling its first three models in Miami on the sidelines of the 2023 edition of its F1 Grand Prix. The new car manufacturer based in Turin and headed up by racing driver Bruno Lafitte, nephew of the famous French pilot Jacques Lafitte, intends to recompose the landscape of electric hypercars with these models. To do so, he joined up with the Italian GFG Style design studio and L.M. Gianetti for engineering and manufacturing. Which resulted in ultra-exclusive, all-electric vehicles inspired by track racing, but approved for onroad driving. The versatile Atrax and futuristic LM1 and Barchetta models, along with their first two variations, the Atrax Stradale and Barchetta Coupé, thus combine esthetic flair, elegance, comfort, and high performance. Zero-emission hypercars are in tune with their time, offer an ‘‘ultra-fast’’ charging system, but

also a revolutionary sound system emulating the roar of combustion engines. Marketing scheduled for 2024, in (very) limited editions.

LAMBORGHINI USHERS IN A NEW ERA

This year, Lamborghini is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The chance for the Italian manufacturer of Sant’Agata to raise the curtain on its very first electrified model. Going by the name of Revuelto, it pays homage to a fighting bull that distinguished itself for its bravery

in the Barcelona arenas in 1880. Successor to the Aventador, this new, rechargeable hybrid coupé retains a key component in Lamborghini DNA, the iconic V12, now coupled with three high-density electric motors of 150 HP each. This super sports car can therefore lay claim to having a combined power of 1,015 HP with different driving modes (Citta, Strada, Sport and Corsa), and three electrification management programmes (Recharge, Hybrid and Performance), plus a groundbreaking transversal dual clutch e-gearbox. Inviting owners to ‘‘Feel Like a Pilot’’, the Lamborghini Revuelto chalks up 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds with a top speed fixed at 350 km/h. As for looks, Lamborghini asserts that its sculpted design establishes a connection between past and future, with elements inspired by the Countach, Diablo and Aventador models along with brandnew features soon to be revealed. Rather like an artistic masterpiece, the 6.5-litre atmospheric V12 engine is displayed for all to see at the rear, lit up by the third brake light. The 3.8 kWh battery charges in 30 minutes for a power supply of 7 kW, or in only 6 minutes using the V12 as a generator (Recharge Programme). The first models will be delivered to their lucky owners from the end of this year.

It’s time to save the oceans

DESIGNED TO LAST AND BE HANDED DOWN… BY DEFINITION, A TIMEPIECE WITHSTANDS THE MARCH OF TIME. WATCHMAKERS ARE, HOWEVER, EXTENDING THEIR COMMITMENT TO RESPONSIBILITY, NOTABLY BY BECOMING INVOLVED WITH THE PROTECTION OF THE OCEANS.

Apioneer in exploration of the oceans, Swiss watchmaker Blancpain can lay claim to the first modern diver’s watch, the legendary Fifty Fathoms presented in 1953. Through its Blancpain Ocean Commitment programme, it plays a significant part in the preservation and conservation of the oceans. In particular, Blancpain supported the Pristine Seas expeditions from 2011 to 2015, allowing for the creation of new protected marine zones covering several million square kilometres all over the world. Since 2013, the watchmaker has also underwritten the Gombessa Expeditions run by French naturalist photographer Laurent Ballesta, studying some of the most elusive marine creatures and phenomena on Earth. The 10th anniversary of their collaboration,

and the 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms watch, gave rise to a new collection of watches dedicated to technical, long-duration diving (Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa). By becoming a partner of the Ocean Photographer of the Year contest organized by the Oceanographic Magazine, Blancpain also reveals the splendour –and fragility – of the oceans. The most recent edition was won by Ben Thouard of France, with the Female Fifty Fathoms prize awarded to Australian photographer, Brooke Pyke.

Rolex also provides backing for explorers through the Perpetual Planet initiative. Since 1982, the brand sporting a crown logo has worked in partnership with American oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earle, who focuses on the creation of Hope Spots, marine areas protected from human activities, through her Mission Blue organization. By working in close

collaboration with local communities, more than 145 Hope Spots have been recognized throughout the world. The most recent is the island of Malpelo, 500 km west of the Colombian mainland. As part of its commitment to the oceans, Rolex became a partner of this organization in 2014.

Intimately linked to the ocean, Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin, which has been making marine chronometers since 1846, is deeply involved on several fronts: preservation of sharks and the fight against plastic pollution, generated, among other things, by fishing nets lost or abandoned at sea. As part of this initiative, Ulysse Nardin has committed itself to the Plastic Odyssey project. Setting off in October 2022 from the port of Marseille, its ship will travel 40,000 nautical miles over three years, making 30 stopovers in the countries most impacted by plastic pollution. A partner in official timekeeping for The Ocean Race, Ulysse Nardin also demonstrated its

commitment to the oceans by joining up with the 11th Hour Racing Team, whose symbolic name is a compelling reminder that time is running out. The event’s official watch, the Ocean Race Diver, to be unveiled this year in a chronograph version, is the first of its kind to be made of sustainable materials: recycled fishing nets!

Motivated by the principles of the circular economy in watchmaking, Italian designer Panerai has created the timepiece with the highest percentage of recycled materials ever achieved in this sector (98.6% of its weight). Already applauded for the eSteel™ (recycled steel alloy meeting the same demands for quality as traditional steel), it has developed a lightweight recycled titanium alloy of aerospatial quality, made of recycled materials for over 80%, for the case of the Submersible eLAB-ID™ EcoTitanium™. A real concentrate of innovations, this watch also proposes a dial and hands coated in recycled SuperLumiNova™ 100%, all completed by a strap made of recycled PET fabric. A partner of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, Panerai demonstrates with these various initiatives that another watchmaking industry, more environmentally friendly, is indeed possible!

PLASTIC POLLUTION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING A ‘‘SEVENTH CONTINENT’’ WITH A SURFACE AREA EQUIVALENT TO THREE TIMES THAT OF FRANCE.

© Naja Bertolt Jensen

A concrete solution to plastic pollution

According to the most recent reports from the United Nations, plastic pollution has become one of the foremost environmental scourges of this century. Each and every year, 11 million tons of plastic waste are dumped into the oceans, threatening ecosystems, economies and human health. In fact, once submerged in the water, plastic breaks down into micro- and nano-particles so that it becomes impossible to recover. Plastic pollution is thus responsible for creating a ‘‘seventh continent’’ in the Pacific Ocean with a surface area equivalent to three times that of France. At the current pace, this figure is slated to multiply by four between now and the year 2050.

Faced by this alarming observation back in 2014, French actor Samuel Le Bihan and François Danel, former General Director of ‘‘Action contre la Faim’’, set up the Earthwake association (which became a company in 2020) to pursue the goal of providing concrete solutions by upcycling plastic waste. Very rapidly, they were joined by inventor Christofer Costes who developed equipment capable of transforming waste into fuel thanks to

pyrolysis, a chemical process making it possible to return plastic waste to its original state: that of petrol. Following several years of Research & Development, the pyrolyser Chrysalis made its appearance: innovation not only low-tech (low cost), but self-sufficient (it feeds on the gas it produces) and mobile (it is entirely containerized). Chrysalis therefpre meets the double challenge posed by plastic pollution and the lack of access to energy in certain countries, while creating new jobs for its exploitation and in the recovery of plastic.

The Earthwake solution has proven to win wide appeal among investors. In March this year, the company raised 2.2 million euros in capital and subsidies thanks to shipowner CMA CGM, R&Co4Generations (Rothschild & Co), Créazur (Crédit Agricole Provence Côte d’Azur) and WiSEED (the first participatory financing platform in France). Successful fundraising will enable it to have Chrysalis equipment certified and placed on the market while recruiting new skills, and also financing the need for working capital for its first sales.

By 2027, Earthwake Enterprise thus aims to become a world player in the field of chemical upcycling of plastic waste. 

Tequila: back on track

PREMIUM SPIRITS HAVE THE WIND IN THEIR SAILS, AS PROVEN BY THIS TRADITIONAL MEXICAN ‘‘EAU-DE-VIE’’ SURFING ALONG ON EXCELLENCE, MUCH TO ITS FANS’ APPRECIATION.

The memorable days of getting plastered on tequila are long gone. Acclaimed in its high-end version by discerning consumers in search of the 100% blue agave, the famous Mexican ‘‘eau-de-vie’’ is now appreciated pure, with ice, occasionally accompanied by sparkling water, or as a cocktail.

Long overshadowed by mezcal, with which it is often confused, tequila has now attained a leading position on the market for spirits. According to the iconic Time Magazine, it could well be all set to de-throne vodka in the United States. In fact, the wave of popularity for luxury tequila already unfurled several years ago across the Atlantic with the emergence of new brands introduced by celebrities. First in line was guitar legend Carlos Santana who joined the owners of Casa

Noble Tequila in 2011, then Georges Clooney who founded Casamigos in 2013 (now owned by Diageo), not forgetting Michael Jordan, Dwayne Johnson, Eva Longoria and Kendall Jenner. Before becoming a smash hit in North America, it was, however, in Mexico, in South America, that tequila first made its appearance on the upscale spirits scene. The result of ancestral know-how, this traditional ‘‘eau-de-vie’’ mainly comes from the state of Jalisco and is exclusively produced from the blue agave (agave tequilana in Latin, also sometimes known as the Weber plant), growing in rich, sandy soils at altitudes of over 1,500 metres. The production of tequila requires (a great deal of) patience: key stages include harvesting of the cores of ripe agave (ripening takes 7 to 8 years), boiling them to extract the sugars, crushing them to obtain sugary juice, its fermentation with yeast, distillation, a resting period, and possibly ageing in oak casks (from two months to one year for ‘‘tequila reposado’’,

up to 3 years for ‘‘añejo’’, and longer for ‘‘extra añejo’’). According to the Consejo Regulador del Tequila, which protects the ‘‘Appellation d’Origine’’ in Mexico, France is one of the markets on which importation of tequila is seeing strong growth, with over 5.3 million litres recorded in 2022.

THE EXCELLENCE OF MEXICAN TEQUILA

Founded in 1997 by Arturo Lomeli in Guadalajara, Clase Azul invites you to discover Mexico’s rich cultural heritage through its precious nectar. The company produces a tequila of unique taste, reflecting the exceptional characteristics of its homeland. Right from the start, Clase Azul became well-known for its artisanal tequila, ‘‘reposado’’, aged for eight months in oak casks, and distinctive not only for its unique taste, but also for its carafe-bottle made of ceramic, beautifully painted by hand, and easily reusable. Clase Azul is now distributed in 59 countries, including France, where it can be found in over 120 addresses on the Côte d’Azur. 

The kitchen as seen by Subodh Gupta

A MAJOR FIGURE IN CONTEMPORARY ART, SUBODH GUPTA IS FAMOUS FOR HIS GRANDIOSE INSTALLATIONS BASED ON KITCHEN UTENSILS AND OTHER OBJECTS UNEARTHED IN JUNK SHOPS.

He is one of the most renowned contemporary artists on the international scene. With work now exhibited in all four corners of the globe, Subodh Gupta was born in 1964 in Khagaul, a small town in Bihar, one of the poorest states in India. Before turning to the visual arts, Gupta, with a real passion for the movies, was an actor in street theatre.

Fascinated by objects from everyday life, reminding him of his childhood (steel tiffin lunch boxes, thali platters, milk pails etc.), Subodh Gupta hijacks and elevates them to attain the rank of monumental artworks. The metals of which they are made (aluminium, steel, bronze etc.), and the way in which they shine, which he finds mesmerising, have become his basic materials. With them, the artist thus explores the significance of these objects in the construction of the individual and collective identity. He once declared: ‘‘I appreciate the fact that they tell all about life. It is also a way of celebrating Marcel Duchamp and his readymades’’.

_ 79
CONTEMPORARY ART

As well as being an artist, Subodh Gupta is a photographer, sculptor, painter and performer. His very first achievement entitled Pure (1999) explored the theme of transformation in a filmed performance in which he covered his body with mud and cow dung, believed to be a source of purification in the Hindu religion, and lay like a corpse in the middle of a field. The issues of displacement, exodus, migration, also constitute a major theme in his production. As witnessed by his work Two Cows (2003), a representation of the daily distribution of milk on bikes, or his immense sculpture Jal Mein Kumbh, Kumbh Mein Jal Hai (The Water Is in the Pot, and the Pot Is in the Water), produced in 2012.

With works now on display worldwide, Subodh Gupta maintains close ties with France which has presented him with many opportunities. It was, in fact, here that he first became known. At the invitation of curator Nicolas Bourriaud, he exhibited his work for the first time in France in 1999 at the Contemporary Art Centre in Sète. He was then invited to participate in the inaugural exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2002, before being nominated guest professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts two years later. The Parisian art-gallery In Situ owned by Fabienne Leclerc then dedicated two exhibitions to his work, in

2005 and 2007. In 2011, Subodh Gupta participated in the ‘‘Paris Delhi Bombay’’ exhibition at the Pompidou Centre, and became a Knight in the Order of Arts and Literature in 2013. More recently, he was the subject of an exhibition at the Galleria Continua in 2016 and a major retrospective at La Monnaie de Paris in 2018. In 2023, Subodh Gupta was awarded the annual ‘‘carte blanche’’ by Le Bon Marché, thus succeeding Ai Weiwei, Joana Vasconcelos and Leandro Erlich. Visitors were then able to (re)discover his work in three monumental sculptures comprised of secondhand objects, thousands of utensils and fragments of mirrors, including Sangam I and Sangam II, a traditional Indian pot and a bucket which were hung in all majesty from the skylights of the department store, on either side of its central staircase.

The flagship artwork by Subodh Gupta, that you may already know, is indisputably Very Hungry God (2006), a shining, monumental skull solely comprised of kitchen utensils, pots and pans, which swept up all the honours at the ‘‘Nuit blanche’’ at the Church of Saint-Bernard de la Chapelle in Paris in 2006. This work became one of the most illustrious examples of contemporary art, along with For the Love of God, a skull encrusted with diamonds by Damien Hirst, one year later. 

The spellbinding paraiba tourmaline

PARAIBA TOURMALINES WERE FIRST DISCOVERED IN BRAZIL IN THE LATE 1980’S. EXTREMELY RARE, THESE TREASURES ARE COVETED BY THE MOST EMINENT JEWELLERS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

We owe the discovery of the rarest and most precious of fine gemstones to the operator of a small mine located in São José de Batalha in the mountains of the poor Brazilan state of Paraiba. After several years of digging deep into the ground, Heitor Dimas Barbosa came up with a handful of stones flaunting an unprecedented fluorescent, electric colour, known as ‘‘neon blue’’. The high concentration of copper and manganese in the stone’s crystalline structure endows it with a range of blue-green shades of remarkable brightness and stunning intensity. Going under the name of paraiba tourmalines, these samples proved to be an attention-grabbing event when they were presented in 1990 at the prestigious Tucson Gem & Mineral Show in Arizona, USA, inevitably then arousing the interest of gemmologists the world over. In just a few days, the price per carat was multiplied by ten, attaining several thousand dollars!

This first historic deposit was depleted in just a few years. Then, at the beginning of 2000, similar specimens came to the surface in Nigeria in 2001, then in Mozambique, in 2005. Whether lighter or more pronounced, it is impossible for the naked eye to distinguish African paraiba tourmalines from those from Brazil: even under the microscope, it is a real challenge to see any difference!

_ 85
JEWELLERY

So even though logic might insist that the term ‘‘paraiba’’ should only be applied to stones from Brazilian deposits, tourmalines from mines in Nigeria and Mozambique can also be marketed under the name ‘‘paraiba tourmaline’’ with the approval of the LMHC (Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee), an entity representing the world’s most highly respected gemmology laboratories. Today, however, two more Brazilian locations are still producing paraiba tourmalines, in the state of Rio Grande. They consist of the Mulungu and Alto dos Quintos mines located about 50 kilometres north-east of the original mine of Batalha.

THE ONLY RARE STONE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE DIAMOND

The splendour of the paraiba tourmaline is only equalled by its rarity. It is even said that for 10,000 diamonds extracted, one can only find a single paraiba tourmaline! Due to very high demand, and depletion of the mines, the price of the paraiba tourmaline can soar to several tens of thousands of dollars per carat! Among jewellers but also investors, the most sought-after examples, and thus the most expensive, are characterized by a bright turquoiseblue colour and are found, as one would expect, in Brazil. Previously held by the 191.87 carat ‘‘Ethereal Carolina Divine Paraiba’’, the new world record for the largest cut paraiba tourmaline is held by German stonecutter Thom Munsteiner for his 196.17 carat ‘‘Apollo’’.

SPECTACULAR ‘‘HAUTE JOAILLERIE’’ DESIGNS

The paraiba tourmaline casts its sparkle on the world’s most exclusive jewellery creations signed Boghossian, Piaget, Gübelin, Moussaieff or Dior. The prestigious Swiss jeweller Chopard has some amazing specimens thanks to Caroline Scheufele, its Co-President and Artistic Director, who travels the world in search of the most extraordinary gems. In 2021, on the occasion of an exclusive partnership with Sotheby’s auction house, she unveiled a majestic necklace made of titanium and ethical white gold certified by Fairmined, enhanced by a sublime 34.63 carat paraiba tourmaline from Mozambique. Italian jeweller Bulgari also regularly shines the spotlight on the paraiba tourmaline in its ‘‘haute joaillerie’’ collections. More recently, the young designer Elsa Jin captured everyone’s attention at the last edition of the Cannes Film Festival by adorning Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana with a stunning brooch set, among other gems, with a 61.29 carat paraiba tourmaline. 

The craze for padel

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, PADEL HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY POPULAR IN FRANCE. SO HOW DID THIS HYBRID SPORT BETWEEN TENNIS AND SQUASH FIRST COME INTO BEING?

Padel was created by Mexican millionaire Enrique Corcuera, who wanted to treat his children to an alternative to tennis in the grounds of his home. He therefore dreamt up a game which would be easier to learn and more accessible for everyone, especially beginners. Padel has the same scoring system as tennis, but smaller courts, and different rules, strikes and techniques. The first padel court made its appearance in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico. This new racket sport soon encountered rising popularity, appealing to Mexicans for its simplicity and enjoyment. Shortly afterwards, it was introduced in Spain where it was met with real enthusiasm. Allowing for outdoor play all year round, the Mediterranean climate undoubtedly played a large part in its surging development. Padel also gained more visibility thanks to personalities from the world of sport who began to play and promote it. Today, padel is one of the sports most played in Spain, with thousands of clubs now open and tournaments held each year. Success which crossed the borders into other countries, especially in Europe, where national federations have been set up to promote the game on the international scene. Padel even became part of the World Games event in 2005.

In Monaco, dedicated infrastructures were quickly set in place to meet rising demand from fans, including a partnership between the Padel Monégasque association and Tennis Padel Soleil of neighbouring Beausoleil. The latter, the largest padel club on the Côte d’Azur, proposes five courts, two of them covered for year-round play under all weather conditions, a centre court with stands for 300 spectators, and highly qualified instructors. The world’s best players, together with other sportsmen and personalities, come here for training and to play with club members. Who also benefit from a premium gym, a magnificent club-house, and a restaurant to add further enjoyment to their sporting activities. Regular tournaments are also organized for both amateurs and professionals. In June 2022, the world’s best players confronted each other on the terraces of Beausoleil and on the spectacular centre court installed specially for the occasion at the rear of the Casino de Monte-Carlo for the CMB Monaco Master, one of the most prestigious padel events worldwide. Held for the third consecutive year in the Principality, it offered spectators a glimpse of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and Circuit President Fabrice Pastor during the finals, won by Leo Augsburger and Alex Chozas of Argentina, Marina Guinart and Araceli Martinez of Spain.
