As we head into winter, I want to take a moment to look ahead — and also to reflect on the important work each of you does every single day.

One event I especially want to highlight is Northern Green, taking place January 20–26. Northern Green is one of the best opportunities all year to connect with others in the turf and grounds industry. It’s a place to learn about relevant, timely topics, share experiences with peers who truly understand the challenges of our work, and see a wide range of vendors all in one place. Whether you attend for education, networking, or simply to recharge your professional batteries, it is a great event and one I strongly encourage you to be part of.

FUNDRAISER RAISED ENOUGH FUNDS TO FUND A $2,000 TURF SCHOLARSHIP IN 2026

MNLA Wins Grand Championship at Green Industry Bowling Fundraiser The Plaisted Companies team representing MNLA won the Grand Championship at the 4th Annual Green Industry Bowling Tournament on December 4th at Flaherty’s Arden Bowl in Arden Hills.

More than 50 members of MTGF, MNLA and MPSFMA attended the fundraiser which ended with a Bakers Round showdown between industries for the championship.

It was another successful holiday event filled with cheer, good food, and a friendly competition. Participants played two games using 5-person teams. First Place Team honors went to Plaisted Companies with a score of 916. Second place honors went to MPSFMA, with a score of 835.

The two advancing first round winners of the final four teams, then in the Championship game in favor of MNLA vs. MTGF. Again, Plaisted Companies team won the Grand Championship.

The collaborated Scholarship fundraiser was a great success! With the help of many sponsors, and generosity of participants, the Green Industry Bowling Tournament is once again able to award two co-sponsored scholarships to promising students.

Bluegrasses Are Still King But You Can’t Treat Them All Equally

Have you looked at a bluegrass NTEP Trial lately? I’m guessing not and I’d wonder about you if you had. A good number of you might be wondering, “What’s an NTEP?” The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Turfgrass Evaluation Program evaluates new and existing turfgrass varieties for overall turf quality and performance based on several criteria.

There’s an NTEP trial for all turf species including Kentucky bluegrass, the fine fescues, tall fescues, ryegrasses and bentgrasses.

You can check them all out at www.ntep.org. If you’d like help navigating through the reports or deciphering the results, talk to your favorite seedman.

In the meantime, you’ll have to take my word for it -- bluegrass varieties are as widely varied as fish are in the sea. There are short ones, tall ones; there are light green ones and dark green ones; some grow more upright while others grow low to the ground; there are even some that do well in light shade while most require full sun. Because of their broad genetic diversity, it’s important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each variety when selecting the right bluegrass-based grass seed mixture.

This issue becomes most critical when selecting bluegrasses or bluegrass/ryegrass mixtures for seeding new ball fields or overseeding existing ones. So how do you know which ones to use?

With a bit of effort on your part, you can print off your very own copy at: http://www.sroseed.com /resources/pdfs/articles/KB_classifications.pdf This Bluegrass Classification System was developed by Rutgers University to help tell the story I’ve outlined. This particular version belongs to SRO and was “massaged” by Dr. Leah Brilman, Director of Turf Research & Technical Services at Seed Research of Oregon. There are 14 different classifications, believe it or not.

To say it in a different way, there are 14 different “subsets” of bluegrasses. The Bluegrass Classification System lists most of today’s commercially available varieties and categorizes them based on similar growth characteristics. This particular chart also highlights common traits shared by varieties within each class.

Very cool. Five of these classes are intended for use on high traffic turf much like what you would find on heavily used athletic fields, courtyards and playgrounds.

Julia The remaining nine classes, though worthy of recognition in other applications, are not specifically intended to be used in high-traffic situations. Will your ball fields spontaneously combust if you use varieties from one of these nine classes? Of course not. But to expect high performing turf on intensely used ball fields grown from these varieties may be wishful thinking.

Not only do bluegrass varieties from these 14 bluegrass classes vary significantly in terms of performance, appearance and turf quality, they also vary greatly in terms of cost. You wouldn’t expect a Mercedes SUV to be priced the same as a Ford station wagon. Nor should you expect a bluegrass from one of the “Top 5” to cost the same as a Shamrock or BVMG. That’s why when you get quotes for a 50/50 Blue/Rye Mix without knowing what to ask for, you’ll receive a broad range of prices from $1.00/lb. up to $2.00/lb. Any 50/50 will serve you well in that neighborhood park or your neighbor’s backyard. But when your site receives 150-200 games per season, you’re best to stick with the Mercedes.

Simple translation -- consult your seed supplier and specifically request a bluegrass/ryegrass mixture that includes two or more varieties from one of the five athletic turf bluegrass classes. If you don’t, you’ll be stuck driving that station wagon. www.MTGF.org

MPSFMA Renovates a Couple of Andover H.S. Baseball Fields The 2025 MPSFMA hands-on Community Service Project to place on two fields at Andover High School on October 5 where mound work, edging and aeration took place.

Sizeable groups from the City of Owatonna and the City of Edina were greatly appreciated along with all of the volunteers that day.

Support the MTGF in Its Mission to Help Fund Green Industry Research and Youth Engagement!

Turf and grounds professionals in Minnesota and beyond have benefited greatly from innovative research funded by the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation. Since 2001, we have donated over $1.75 million to the University of Minnesota (this is over $88,000 per year!); this funding has helped build strong applied research programs focused on turf and landscape management. The ongoing support from the MTGF has given these research programs a foundation from which to seek larger grants that generate new approaches to landscape management that help sustain our industry.

Unfortunately, this past year has created a challenge for the MTGF as our primary revenue sources, Northern Green, which is a joint effort between MTGF and the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, was not held in person and therefore did not generate sufficient income from which to make our annual donations for research.

Make a Point of Attending the Northern Green in St. Paul January 22-24, 2025 To continue our important role in support of turf and grounds research, we are asking for donations from individual MTGF members. In a normal year, you would’ve contributed to our efforts by attending the Northern Green, where you would have learned from leading horticultural educators, visited with vendors on the impressive trade show floor, and networked with your fellow green industry professionals. This year, you can have a positive impact by making a donation to help the MTGF continue our mission of funding research, outreach, and education for the turf and grounds professionals.

We hope you see this as an investment, one that will bring great returns in the form of new knowledge, more sustainable practices, and forward-looking approaches to maintain green spaces.

If you received this issue of MTGF Clippings in the mail, you are a member of one of seven allied associations, which makes you a member of the MTGF. MTGF has no membership fees associated with being a member or vendor member.

However, you have received the full benefits through the mission of the MTGF. The MTGF Board is made up of two individuals from each of the seven allied associations plus two vendor members. The ramification was felt when the MTGF had to decide to put a hold on research grant funding for 2021 in hopes that we can return to normal in time for the 2022 funding season. Your attendance at the 2024 Northern Green helps is key. The Green Industry as a whole has been rewarded year after year through the research dollars granted by the MTGF and we are now asking for extra help to be able to continue this same success. Association Spotlight: MINNESOTA SOCIETY OF ARBORICULTURE The Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF) is made up of seven affiliated groups that deal with the maintenance and planning of grounds and turf. The Minnesota Society of Arboriculture (MSA) is the organization that represents the Tree Care professionals within the MTGF. Arboriculture is the management of trees and other woody plants. The MSA is an organization that promotes the planting and preservation of shade and ornamental trees. The Minnesota Society of Arboriculture will supply the professional, lay person or student with current information on events and happenings in the fields of arboriculture and urban forestry.

Staying up to date in the newest technologies, research and skills is important in any industry. The MSA helps keep the arborist community up to date through its events and publications. The Minnesota Tree Care Conference is a MSA event that is held every fall, bringing in world class speakers and researchers to share new information. The MSA also sponsors the Day of Service, held every Veterans Day at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, and the always popular Tree Climbing Championships, which crowns (men's and women's) Minnesota champions who then represent Minnesota at the International Tree Climbing Championships. During the summer there is the Summer

Climbing Workshop that focuses on technical information for tree climbers.

Members can participate in all the events mentioned and receive some additional benefits.

Members receive discounted registration for certain events as well as the MSA publications.

The Arborescence is quarterly newsletter that contains articles and keeps members informed about upcoming events and announcements. Members also receive a membership directory.

The MSA is not only a source for education and outreach in Minnesota, it also serves as a chapter to the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), promoting and managing the ISA Certified Arborist program in addition to extending the arms of ISA and proper tree care.

TROE Center features an automated rain shelter that slides back and forth to easily control sunlight and rain. This shelter has been great for drought tolerant cool-season turfgrass screening research. The MTGF annually helps fund operations at TROE Center.
