MPSTMA Golf Tournament Set for Thursday, July 16 At ‘Annika & Arnie’s’ Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo
The MPSTMA Golf Outing at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo is set for Thurs., July 16. Tee times begin at 11 am. The cost for the event is $59 which includes a cart and lunch. All MPSTMA members are invited to play. The format is a stress-free, 4-person Scramble. At this printing, about a dozen spots remain available. In case you haven’t heard of this course, it was formerly 3M Corporation’s Tartan Park until Annika Sorenstam and, the late, great Arnold Palmer were brought in to redesign the course. Annika designed
nine holes as did Arnie. It is a fun course to play. Registration is available on-line. At this time, we have room for 40 golfers. Please register or notify the MPSTMA when you know you are going to play so more tee times can be reserved, if needed. Members from Four Cities Participate in a Blog As the Coronavirus Made the State Shut Down (Editor’s Note: Thanks to MPSTMA members Paul Miskimen, City of Burnsville; Paul Graham, City of Eagan; Mark Kruse, City of Lakeville, and Paul Griffin, City of Woodbury for participating in a Blog as the Coronavirus made the State shut down.)
March 24, 2020 - Burnsville In Burnsville we have shut down all spring athletic programs, water features, shelter rentals and recreation programs. We have also suspended hiring of any seasonal staff. Are others having a similar response? What do maintenance practices look like on athletic fields that are not being used? March 25, 2020 - Eagan Thanks Paul for starting this blog. On March 17 Eagan went to an essential services only and plan to continue that through March 29 as of today. Our maintenance staff are home and not working. Supervisory staff are working remotely as best they can. We are making plans for when we do bring staff back and what the priorities will be. Eagan has not shutdown or closed any parks or any site specific destinations such as the dog park or playgrounds, all facilities and city buildings are closed. Supervisors have conducted phone interviews with potential seasonal employees with the hope of hiring/on-boarding in late April or early May.
March 26, 2020 - Woodbury Question for those that aren't coming into work how are you dealing with trash? March 30, 2020 - Burnsville We are going to try PGR's on our athletic fields to reduce our mowing needs and pre/post emergent on our skinned infields to reduce how often we need to drag them. Is anyone else thinking the same? March 31, 2020 - Woodbury We are thinking along the same lines at this point. As you all know with so many unknowns it is difficult to come up with a plan. I still don't know if we will have seasonal staff, what facilities will be open and if they are when that will happen, and finally what construction projects will be moving forward. I guess it really is a one day at a time world right now. (Continued on Page 8)
March 25, 2020 - Burnsville What are some of the things people are doing with their playgrounds? I saw Edina closed theirs completely and fenced them off. Anyone doing any kind of cleaning/disinfecting program? In Burnsville, for now, we are just planning on adding informational signage at the entrance to the playground. March 26, 2020 - Burnsville Now that the Governor has issued the stay at home order, and listed playgrounds as an example of what is closed, is anyone doing anything special with them? We are planning on just adding signage that states they are closed. It doesn't seem feasible for us to fence them off since we have 52 of them. Apr. 2, 2020 - Lakeville We have applied pre/post emergent to skinned infields in the past and have had good results. We plan to do the same again this spring. PGR's on turf has not been considered yet; good idea though.I have received the request to start determining if there are projects that we can hold off on. Budget concerns are ramping up! New Concern: Activities, Rentals and special events are getting postponed until late season. I currently have proposed large events on the same public property on back to back weekends. Normally each event causes significant damage to the turf requiring seeding, aeration and others to recover. Now they are considering back to back. April 9, 2020 - Woodbury What are people doing with tennis nets and basketball courts? I understand some aren't installing nets and even removing hoops. April 9, 2020 - Burnsville Burnsville is in the process of closing our skate park and making changes to our tennis/pickleball courts. On those where we have multiple courts we will be removing some of the nets to increase physical distancing. Still no plan to close our playgrounds but I am anticipating it will happen. No change to our basketball or volleyball courts, they are still open. April 9, 2020 - Eagan As of this writing Eagan's pickleball, tennis, playgrounds and basketball courts remain open with signage at all stating recommended social distance practice. We have employed several Recreation staff as ambassadors to help educate and react to calls of non-compliance. We have about a dozen portable toilets out for the season also.

Our PD and Community Service Officers are in our parks more often than normal at this time, communicating and educating all groups about the Governor's order. April 13, 2020 - Burnsville When this all started we were instructed to cease interviewing seasonal staff and to plan on having not having any this summer. Lately they seem to be hinting that they might let us hire some but we are worried about being able to get any since we have not been able to line them up earlier. Right now we are planning on mowing with eight full-time staff, our mowing usually gets done with 16 people so it will be a struggle. There have been a few city hall staff that have been reassigned temporarily to public works to help out. We will see how that goes. April 27, 2020 - Woodbury Woodbury update No COVID-19 cases in Public Works Parks are busy lots of walkers and tennis court use. Seeing families using fields hitting kicking balls, pitching etc. Going on modified "regular" shift starting May 4th. Still social distancing such as one to a truck and some staggered start times and hours. Weekly meeting on teams. Supervisors are still splitting between office and home. Approved to bring on 6-12 seasonal staff normally we would have 40-50. Will state with 9 people. Tasks will be 5 mowing, 1 trash, 1 forestry, 2 combo of ornamental beds/courts/playgrounds/floating where needed. Buildings are still closed to the public all recreation and sport events cancelled for now. Golf course open clubhouse closed limited seasonal staff hired. We are on hold off filling open full-time position guessing wont happen anytime soon. Hope everyone is staying safe and health. April 29, 2020 - Burnsville Burnsville update, so far we have not had any missed time due to COVID-19 illness. As I am sure is the same with everyone our park system has seen a much higher use this spring than normal, even with scheduled activities cancelled. The City has decided not to hire seasonal staff this summer. We just received bids back to mow a portion of our system to help take some of the pressure off of our limited staff. It is in the six figures to mow about about 40 acres spread throughout the city. We were told yesterday that the cost estimate for everything related to the pandemic is around 2.5 million which is obviously not budgeted. Guessing most projects and capitol purchases for this year will be cancelled and possibly next year as well. This is definitely going to be a busy summer but I reSUMMER 2020
ally think some good will come out of it. I am predicting increased efficiencies and better maintenance practices will be found and implemented on a full time basis. I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! April 30, 2020 - Eagan Eagan update: approved to bring on some seasonal workers to help with the mowing, sanitation and landscape maintenance. Parks are still very busy. No organized team sports yet, but they are looking at possible June start. As we all know spring is extremely busy every year, with modified staffing and work plans it will challenge us even more. Good luck everyone and stay safe! May 5, 2020 - Woodbury We are looking into opening a few buildings for public use. I know Greg Hoeg at Brooklyn Park open a few with some signage and is doing some extra cleaning. Is anybody else opening buildings or thinking about it? Any extra cleaning being done? Is your staff taking any extra precautions while doing the cleaning? Special signage? Using portable restrooms doing extra cleaning?

MPSTMA Community Service Project Set August 19 at Legion Field in Buffalo The MPSTMA will renovate Legion Field in Buffalo on August 19. The field is located at the intersection of County Hwy. 34 & and County Road 134. Volunteers and supplies are needed to complete all the work that is planned by the end of the day. This is a great opportunity to learn how to do various renovations on a baseball field from some of the most experienced ports turf managers around. Contact the MPSTMA office if you’d like to participate. The following projects are planned: Home Plate Circle Renovation; Pitcher Mound Renovation; Arc Restoration/ 3rd Base Overrun Repair, and Ag-lime Restoration. MPSTMA Spring Workshop Sets Attendance Record At Annual Get Together at University of Northwestern The MPSTMA Spring Workshop took place on March 11 at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. Fortunately, the event took place 48 hours before Governor Walz put a "shelter in place" mandate for Minnesotans where no more than 10 people could gather in any one spot.
The MPSTMA registered its biggest crowd and vendor support as more than 230 registered and 27 companies participated. The event annually sets up MPSTMA financially for the year. We were lucky.

Tim VanLoo, CSFM, Grounds & Facilities Manager at Iowa State talked about "Mentoring the Next Generation of Turf Managers." Derek Hollanitsch City of St. Paul, and Marcus Campbell, CHS Field, put together a presentation and video on winter setup of a hockey rink and slide at CHS Field. The presentation shared experiences of lessons learned in 30 years of park work. Michael Richard, Mississippi State University, performed a webinar on how to teach coaches and field users about field maintenance. Dominic Petrella, University of Minnesota, hosted a session titled: "Understanding and Managing Turfgrasses Under Shade." Dominic is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minnesota working in the turfgrass science group with Dr. Eric Watkins. A Roundtable on salt brines and pre-treating - what works and what doesn't took place after the Keynote.

MTGF Donates $100,000 Towards UM Research for 2020; Northern Green Considering Plans B, C and D for 2021 Fortunately for the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation, the 2020 Northern Green took place as scheduled in mid-January. The MTGF along with the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association partner to host the Northern Green annually. Almost all of MTGF’s proceeds from this event go towards turf and grounds research each year. That being said, the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF) is very proud to to be donating $100,000 towards 2020 turf and grounds research and operations. 2021 Northern Green The 2021 Northern Green is scheduled for January 13-15. We are in the midst of extraordinary days and the Northern Green committee is considering a Plan B, C and D.

The MTGF Board of Directors approved two funding requests at its March Board Meeting. continued operations and research at TROE Center continues to be very beneficial for Minnesota turf managers. The MTGF Board also approved a donation of $50,000 towards Teaching, Research, and Outreach Programs conducted by the University of Minnesota Departments of Forest Resources and Plant Pathology. The MTGF is not formally connected with the University of Minnesota. However, one of its primary goals is to support and be advisory to the development of turf and grounds research, education and outreach programs at the University of Minnesota College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Horticulture Science. The MTGF played a major advisory role in the planning and development of the University of Minnesota, Turf and Grounds Research and Outreach Center and currently helps fund operating costs. To date, the MTGF has funded more than 1.7 million dollars towards turf and grounds research in Minnesota. The Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF) was formed in 1993 as a non-profit organization. It is partnership of seven turf and grounds related
