President’s Update By Reid Johnson, CSFM MPSTMA President Grounds Specialist, Saint Paul Academy and Summit School

As my term as President of the MPSTMA comes to an end, I look back on this previous year with exorbitant pride. Despite the ever-changing disruptive force of the Covid-19 virus, we managed to accomplish a lot as an association. The MPSTMA Board was determined to plan events, not knowing whether they would happen or not. We tried new ideas for engagement like the online formatted “Networking at Noon.” After vaccinations became widely available, we held the majority of our events in person and much was learned and enjoyed amongst attendees. The Golf Scramble, Demo Day, Community Service Project, and the Fall Workshop were all successful and brought back that comfortable feeling of comradery between grounds professionals. In December we held the first in-person Board Meeting/Meal in more than two. To have served the MPSTMA during this period of resiliency brings me a great sense of pride. * * * * As we move forward into 2022, the climate is at the forefront of my mind. The increasing unpredictability of the weather will make caring for parks, sports fields and school grounds more challenging. It is up to us to find new ways to combat the tempestuous storms that cancel games, picnics, and other events. Technology will hopefully provide answers to our oncoming issues but also tricks of the trade developed by groundskeepers can make a world of difference. That is why it is so important to keep the MPSTMA humming along to provide a forum for people in the turfgrass industry.

MPSTMA YEAR-IN-REVIEW 2021 Last year’s MPSTMA event calendar began on March 17 when a two-hour Webinar replaced the traditional inperson Spring Workshop because of strict State of Minnesota restrictions regarding group sizes during the Covid-19 issue. Fifty people participated in the online version of the 17 Spring Workshop which featured two speaker presentations and an open roundtable discussion. Maggie Reiter, a University of Minnesota Turfgrass Extension researcher, presented remotely on Glyphosate alternatives snd the efficacy and trade-offs in the landscape. Matt Cavanaugh, Rush Creek Golf Club Superintendent in Maple Grove, followed Reiter. Cavanaugh’s theme focused on the fact work is hard so try to have fun doing it. A variety of film clips, in the presentation, produced by his staff proved that Matt walks the talk. Members then participated in a 30-minute roundtable on a variety of topics to close out the informative and fun webinar. DEMO DAY The MPSTMA Demo Day took place

on July 14 at Henry Sibley High School. The host turf manager was Matt Grosjean, CSFM. Natural grass and synthetic turf fields were both available for equipment demonstrations that Commercial members brought for members to try for themselves and ask questions about. This annual free event for MPSTMA general members was well-attended considering the day consisted of a threatening sky and a great chance for rain. More than 120 people were on hand for the event. GOLF SCRAMBLE The 2nd Annual MPSTMA Scramble took place on Thurs., August 5 at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo. Sponsoring the event were: + MTI Distributing Inc.; Frost Inc.; HLS Outdoor; Ramy Turf; EC Grow; Gertens Wholesale & Professional Turf Supply, and SiteOne Landscape Supply The MTI foursome of Bob Frank, Larry Gorman, Tim Fleegle and Ryan Pannhoff won the event with an 11under par 61. Finishing one shot behind was a foursome made up of: Nick Balestreiri, HLS Outdoor; Trent Waters, City of Roseville; Jared Alley, Minnesota Twins/Target Field, and Marcus Campbell, Saint Paul Saints/CHS Field. Make plans to play in this event in August 2022! UMN FIELD DAY The UMN Turfgrass Field Day for grounds and parks audiences took place on September 10 at the Turfgrass Research and Outreach Education Center in St. Paul. The 2-hour event featured research projects and a lineup of UMN speakers. UMN hosted 34 attendees; the group consisted of turfgrass managers from city, college, and cemetery groups, sales and manufacturing representatives, and lawn care operators. Post-event survey respondents said the event was efficient, informative, and enjoyable. Field Day will happen again in 2022, so keep an eye on MTGF and MPSTMA channels for announcements about turfgrass field days which may take place earlier in the year. In the future, UMN will showcase research related to fine fescue grasses, technology for irrigation management, natural and organic weed control, and ways to reduce pesticide use.

Year-in-Review(Continued from Page 5) COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT For the 13th time and led by retired sports turf manager Mike McDonald, CSFM, MPSTMA members renovated a playing field in Minnesota. In 2021, two adjacent Little League Fields in Circle Pines were renovated. The two fields, Carl Eck Field and Lion Field, were in dire need of renovation as the fields will host the Little League State Championships in 2022 for 8-9 yearolds.

MPSTMA worked hard and completed the CSP on two fields in just 5 hours!

Magic Turf’s Jerrod Brunelle and Mike Brunelle did prep work on the renovation prior to the September 15 project. MagicTurf also provided equipment and supplies and labor for this year’s CSP. The scope of MPSTMA’s involve-

ment consisted of the building of two little league mounds with clay bricks/ag-lime; installation of rubber mats in both home plate areas; installing base anchors on both fields, and the sodding and grooming of both infields. Special thanks to our commercial members who supplied equipment and product for the project. These vendors include: HLS Outdoor: 20 bags of Dura Edge Pro Drying Agent; Minnesota Twins: 1 case of I-25 irrigation heads and some field rakes; City of Lakeville: 2 pallets of a 28-0-0 100% UMAXX fertilizer; Ramy Turf: 1 Bag of Athletic Grass

FALL WORKSHOP The MPSTMA Fall Workshop took place on November 17 at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville. Sam Bauer, Ramy Turf, and Joe Churchill, Reinders Inc. led things off in the Main Room and talked about industry supply impacts and potential alternatives. During that same time period, in another room, Fred Kolkmann, Tennis & Sports Surfaces, will give his presentation on “court maintenance.” Following those presentations were Maggie Reiter and Ryan Schwab from the University of Minnesota who offered updates and information on the growing season and irrigation management. A roundtable on “New Technology” was well-attended and well-received. Minnesota Hall of Fame speaker Keynote Speaker, Kit Welchlin once again entertained and inspired the 200 registrants on hand. The 2022 MPSTMA Fall Workshop will take place on November 16 at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville.

2021 MPSTMA/TURFCO FIELD OF THE YEAR ROUND LAKE STADIUM - EDEN PRAIRIE Since 2010 the MPSTMA and Turfco have identified one field as the "Field of The Year." Each and every year the managers of these facilities have highlighted their commitment to safe and quality surfaces. Throughout the year, I visit many sports turf facilities, Jeff Vinkemeier and the Eden Prairie Park Deparment team at Round Lake Stadium have set a new standard for playing conditions. Each and every day the athletes who play on this field benefit from their dedication.
