FIELD OF THE YEAR

PAST PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By Trenton Waters MPSFMA Past President Minnesota Sodding Company

Dear MPSFMA Members, Partners and Friends,
As we close out another successful season and enter a new one, this marks the completion of my past two years serving as your President and confident Marshall Syvertsen, City of Edina, will lead the group well. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each of you. Our association continues to grow in strength, purpose, and community because of your dedication. Whether you are a longtime member, a new face, or one of our valued vendors, your support has been essential to the success of the MPSFMA.
To our vendors: thank you for your unwavering partnership. Your expertise, resources, and commitment make everything we do possible. Your participation has elevated our workshops, events, and field days, and we are truly grateful for your role in advancing our profession.
To our Board members: your leadership, time, and passion over the last two years have been nothing short of exceptional. Thank you for the energy you bring to every meeting, the behind-the-scenes work that often goes unseen, and your continued drive to move our association forward. It has been an honor serving alongside you.
This year was one of activity, engagement, and growth. Together we celebrated a full calendar that strengthened our professional community:
Spring Workshop – A strong kickoff to the year, filled with learning, shared challenges, and the chance to reconnect with colleagues from around the region.
Golf Event – A great day of camaraderie, networking, and (for some of us!) surprisingly good golf.
Fall Workshop – Another well-attended event featuring valuable education, hands on learning and new ideas to bring back to your facilities.
Community Service Project – One of the most meaningful parts of our year. Thank you to all who volunteered their time and talents to give back to our local communities.
Field Day at Target Field and the University of Minnesota – A season highlight that showcased two premier facilities and gave members the opportunity to learn directly from industry-leading grounds teams.
These events continue to define the culture of the MPSFMA— collaborative, supportive, and committed to elevating the profession. I encourage each of you to stay engaged, stay curious, and continue pushing our industry forward.
Please consider applying for Field of the Year and Groundskeeper of the Year. These awards are more than recognition—they help highlight the exceptional work being done across our state and inspire others to reach higher.
Ask questions. Share ideas. Get involved. Your voice and participation matter, and they help ensure the MPSFMA remains a strong and vibrant association.
Thank you again for an incredible season and for the support you’ve shown over the past two years. It has been a privilege to serve you.
With Gratitude,
Trenton Waters

Saint Paul’s Toni Stone Field Wins Turfco | MPSFMA Field of the Year
Toni Stone Field is the winner of the 2025 Turfco | MPSFMA Field of the Year. The field is located in the Rondo Neighborhood of Saint Paul and was built between 1952 and 1954.
Toni Stone Field has a storied history. Named in honor of Marcenia Lyle Stone who was an American professional female baseball player who grew up in the Rondo neighborhood. Toni Stone Field has been instrumental in the development of countless ball players through the years, including Dave Winfield (HOF 2001); Paul Molitor (HOF 2004); Jack Morris (HOF 2018), and Joe Mauer (HOF 2024). Former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke played here, too as well as many other players who were drafted to the MLB level.
Hollanitsch believes in providing the best product he can within the budgetary restraints he has to navigate. He accomplishes this by being a hands-on manager who develops, educates and mentors, staff on the “best practices” used for field/facility maintenance.
Toni Stone Field is home to Central High School Baseball and hosts many local and regional tournament games for youth, high school and other amateur events.
Toni Stone Field has hosted many top baseball events including the Minnesota State High School League State Tournament, American Legion World Series, Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Association Tournament, RBI World Series, and many other games throughout the years. This field has been the home ballpark to many Minnesota State Amateur Men baseball teams over the years. Most recently this year with Air Freight Unlimited winning the Class B State Tournament.
Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, like many municipalities, relies on a mix of full time and seasonal staffing to perform most of the field/facility maintenance for youth and adult programming.
Derek Hollanitsch oversees the maintenance at four of Saint Paul Parks and Recreation’s premier sites along with supporting many others. These sites include:
McMurray Fields: Baseball field, three softball fields, three artificial soccer fields and two broomball rinks
Dunning Sports Complex: Three baseball fields, three softball fields, two manual batting cages, six tennis courts and one basketball court
Rice and Arlington Sports Complex: Five softball fields.
Arlington Arkwright Athletic Fields: One baseball field, aone soccer field, two tennis courts, one basketball court and one manual batting cage.
Derek and a handful of seasonal staff handle all aspects of the maintenance at these sites, including: Dragging/lining baseball and softball fields; edging infields and outfield boarders; installation of temporary fencing; layout and striping of football, soccer, and lacrosse fields; grooming and repair of artificial turf fields; sod replacement, aerifica-
tion, top dressing, overseeding, fertilization, irrigation programming and repair; refuse management; string trimming; fencing repair; power washing bench areas, bleachers and grandstands along with cleaning restrooms and locker rooms.
Hollanitsch believes in providing the best product he can within the budgetary restraints he has to navigate. He accomplishes this by being a hands-on manager who develops, educates and mentors, staff on the “best practices” used for field/facility maintenance.
The type of equipment used to maintain the various Saint Paul fields include: Jacobsen HR800; TORO Z Turn; John Deere Tri-Plex; Kawasaki Mule w/Rahn Rake; Cushman 3 Wheeled Groomsmaster; Turfco KisCutter; Turfco XT10 Stand-on Aerator w/Seeder Attachment; Little Wonder Sidewalk Edger; Stihl Backpack Blowerand a BobCat ToolCat with various attachments.
Maintenance Program: The maintenance program begins early season fertilization with weed preventative. Aeration is performed at a minimum of three times per year. High wear areas are seeded frequently. Edging of the infield is performed throughout the season with a more intensive approach in September. A thorough mound renovation is performed every September. The high wear area in front of the mound is re-done in September. Re-grading of the infield skin is performed in September with additional Ag-Lime added as needed.
Toni Stone Field is used for a solid six months (200+ games) on a regular basis. It’s the home field to Central High School. Various other local high school programs use the field as well. This field is used extensively by the Saint Paul Amateur Baseball League and the Over 50 League. The Saint Paul RBI Program (Reviving Baseball Inner-city) uses this field often as well. Highland Baseball Association and CAA (Catholic Athletic Association). Minnesota Blizzard Baseball and Great Lakes Baseball Academy.
Early season play is an immense challenge especially as the grass is trying to green up. Teams tend to warm up throwing right on the foul lines. Wear patterns can be problematic because of this. With so many games throughout the season the area in front of the mound gets very worn too. Unlike professional ballparks where there’s staff to cover the field during rain events, we rely on teams to make good choices to halt the game. Having teams that try to continue playing a game after and during a light rainfall can be very problematic. Toni Stone pitching mound is clay based and we all know clay and water can be an issue.

Minnesotans Make a Big Impression In the Great State of Texas at SFMA
By Trenton Waters MPSFMA Past President | Minnesota Sodding Company
In mid-January, the SFMA Conference in Fort Worth, Texas delivered an outstanding week of celebration, connection, and education for sports field professionals from across the country.
Minnesota, once again, made a big impression. “Texas: “where the stars at night are big and bright.” That may be true, but this weekend, Minnesota brought a little extra shine of its own.
A major highlight was Larry DiVito’s acceptance speech, pictured at the right, as he received the prestigious Dick Ericsson Award, recognizing his lasting impact on the industry. The conference also marked an exciting milestone for the association as Paula Sliefert’s first conference as the CEO of SFMA, while also being honored with the 2025 Harry Gill Award for her leadership and service. It was also a great moment when she was able to announce the 2026 Harry Gill award winner Matt Anderson from The Toro Company. (Pictured at the right)

Friendly competition was in full swing throughout the week. Josh Webber and Mason Modjeski took home the title in the SAFE Cornhole Tournament. Derek Hollanitsch posted the top individual bowling score with an impressive 206 and Team Minnesota claimed the overall bowling tournament victory over Team Arizona. Minnesota was led by Cody Pamperin, Marcus Campbell, Derek Hollanitsch, Ed Tietel and Ben Boeding, CSFM. (See photo on Page 32)
One of the most memorable evenings was a great Minnesota Night at Second Rodeo, bringing attendees together for food, fun, and fellowship.
A sincere thank you goes out to MSC, Reinders, Berg Turf, Versare, Turfco, Field Turf and Kromer Co. for helping make the night such a success.
Beyond the awards and competitions, the week was filled with valuable networking opportunities, informative site visits, and top-notch educational sessions, making the Fort Worth conference another memorable and meaningful SFMA experience. It was great getting to know everyone a little bit better down in Texas.
MAKE PLANS FOR TAMPA BAY!
Next year’s SFMA Conference will be held February 1-4, 2027 in Tampa Bay. Bring your golf clubs!

Dr. Jon Trappe, University of Minnesota Turfgrass Extension, spoke at the 2026 Northern Green at RiverCentre in Saint Paul on January 22nd. Dr. Trappe’s session was about Turf & Trees in Harmony. Gary Wyatt, also from the UMN, spoke with Dr. Trappe during the session. The Trade Show, at the left, was buzzing.

Support the MTGF in Its Mission to Help Fund Green Industry Research and Youth Engagement!

Turf and grounds professionals in Minnesota and beyond have benefited greatly from innovative research funded by the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation. Since 2001, we have donated over $1.75 million to the University of Minnesota (this is over $88,000 per year!). This funding has helped build strong applied research programs focused on turf and landscape management. The ongoing support from the MTGF has given these research programs a foundation from which to seek larger grants that generate new approaches to landscape management that help sustain our industry. Unfortunately, this past year has created a challenge for the MTGF as our primary revenue sources, Northern Green, which is a joint effort between MTGF and the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, was not

held in person and therefore did not generate sufficient income from which to make our annual donations for research.
To continue our important role in support of turf and grounds research, we are asking for donations from individual MTGF members. In a normal year, you would’ve contributed to our efforts by attending the Northern Green, where you would have learned from leading horticultural educators, visited with vendors on the impressive trade show floor, and networked with your fellow green industry professionals. This year, you can have a positive impact by making a donation to help the MTGF continue our mission of funding research, outreach, and education for the turf and grounds professionals.
We hope you see this as an investment, one that will bring great returns in the form of new knowledge, more sustainable practices, and forward-looking approaches to maintain green spaces. If you are a member of one of seven allied associations, you automatically are considered member of the MTGF. MTGF has no membership fees associated with being a member or vendor member. However, you receive the full benefits through the mission of the MTGF. The MTGF Board is made up of two individuals from each of the seven allied associations plus two vendor members. The seven MTGF allied associations are:
+ Minnesota Association of Cemeteries
+ Minnesota Educational Facilities Management Professionals
+ Minnesota Golf Course Superintendents' Association
+ Minnesota Park and Sports Field Management Association
+ Minnesota Society of Arboriculture
+ Minnesota Sod Producers
+ Minnesota Turf Seed Council
Funding provided by the MTGF through your participation has been able to leverage millions of more dollars for turf and grounds research. The ramification was felt when the MTGF had to decide to put a hold on research grant funding for 2021 in hopes that we can return to normal in time for the 2022 funding season. Your attendance at the 2024 Northern Green helps is key. The Green Industry as a whole has been rewarded year after year through the research dollars granted by the MTGF and we are now asking for extra help to be able to continue this same success.
Please visit the MTGF website (www.mtgf.org/donations) where you can find additional information on how you can donate to additional turf and grounds research.
University of Minnesota Turfgrass Update
By Dr. Jon Trappe University of Minnesota | Turfgrass Extension
My name is Jon Trappe and I am the Turfgrass Extension Educator with the University of Minnesota (UMN). I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you more about the UMN Extension efforts so that you can better use us as a resource if and when we might be able to make your job easier as a turf professional.
I am a member of several teams at the University of Minnesota that carry out our Land Grant Mission of serving the public through turf-related content. This outreach support is extended to anyone in the state of Minnesota who handles turf in some capacity, whether they are someone who manages turfgrass areas like a homeowner or professional, those who support the turf industry like wholesale and retail vendors, or those involved with local or state government.

Quite a bit of what we do is in-person or web-based teaching to each of our audiences. This includes workshops, field days, pesticide applicator trainings, and presentations on specific turf-related subjects. In 2025, we taught at over 80 events to more than 4,300 people wanting or needing to learn more about turf management. Some of these events are hosted by one of MTGF’s allied organizations, others might be hosted by local or regional governmental organizations like Soil Water Conservation Districts, or UMN Extension hosted the events themselves. Regardless, the content is typically tailored to address an emerging issue in the turf industry such as managing white grubs on golf courses, for example.
One of our farthest reaching forms of education is through web-based resources. The Extension Yard and Garden webpages are geared more towards lawn care and cover a wide range of topics like lawn watering best practices or how to purchase grass seed. The Lawn Care Calendar is one of the top two visited webpages in all of UMN Extension, receiving thousands of visits each year. The UMN Turf Program page also contains educational materials for the turf industry, with topics ranging from updates on past and current research projects, turf news, roadside turf management trainings, and information for those interested in degrees in turf. Finally, the Turf Dashboard is a localized decision support tool we created to help turf managers make more informed decisions regarding weather, diseases, and weeds.
Another way that we support the turf industry of Minnesota is through applied turf research. Many of these research projects are created to improve best management practice recommendations. Some applied turf research projects are designed to better understand problems turf managers are experiencing in the field. Take for example the winterkill of new and established turf stands reported across the state in the spring of 2025. We heard from turf managers across the state about apparent winterkill despite the fairly moderate winter. One theory is that the prolonged drought throughout the fall of 2024 may have played a role in turf susceptibility to winter stresses. Because prolonged fall drought is a relatively unstudied effect in turf, we are coordinating research in St. Paul and in Ames, IA with Iowa State
University to conduct field research under simulated fall drought stress. We hope to better understand the cause for these observations and provide better solutions for turf managers in the future. The eyes and ears of the turf industry is a tremendous resource for us to identify problems in the field and conduct research to better understand and reduce the effects of these problems.
These resources from the UMN Turf Program are made possible from taxpayer funds and the financial support of those within
the Minnesota turf industry. Your membership in MTGF and allied organizations plays a direct and critical role in ensuring that these resources can be actively maintained and relevant to the turf industry. Thank you for your continued support. If you need technical help with a turf-related issue or have suggestions or needs of educational content, please reach out to us directly.
