Dear friends, As I began to think about this letter, I took some time to reflect on our family’s 12 years at Marin Primary & Middle School. Hailey, our oldest, is now an eighth grader, and Morgan is a sixth grader — and the age-old saying, “where does the time go?” couldn’t ring truer than it does for me today. We have seen the School reach new levels of academic excellence during our time here and have benefited from substantial improvements to our facilities, including the playground, science lab, and what is soon to be Julie’s Art Deck. As we usher in a new era at MP&MS and welcome our new Head of School, Andrew Slater, we remain thankful to Julie Elam for 11 years of unwavering dedication. Our community is strong, and it is an incredible time to support this next chapter that will continue to transform and evolve our campus and curriculum.

In my second year as Development Chair, I continue to be impressed by the generosity of our community and the range of both financial and volunteer contributions that serve to enhance MP&MS. Having a cohesive giving strategy allows us to maximize the benefit for our students, staff, and faculty. The Annual Fund, Capital Campaigns,

and Auction each play a critical role in our fundraising efforts. With this year’s Annual Fund launching in October and the Auction in April, I encourage you to think about your philanthropic gifts to MP&MS in a way that supports each aspect of giving. Help us set an exceptional example of generosity for our children, educating them about the importance of charitable giving.

Help us fund the gap between tuition dollars and general operating costs at the School. Help us continue to enhance our beautiful campus and pave the way for expansion in the near future.

An Update from Chief Financial Officer, David Brown

We have closed the books on the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, and are working with our auditors to complete final audited financials. As we work to conclude this process, these numbers from our unaudited financial statements can offer a glimpse into our current financial position. Net assets grew to $7.4 million from $6.5 million a year ago, an increase of 13%. Unrestricted net assets grew faster, rising 26% to $6.8 million. Cash and cash equivalents were $8.9 million, up from $8.2 million a year ago.

Fiscal year 2017 marked the beginning of our roll-out of the expanded middle school. Extensive changes included a move to a more departmentalized program, the addition of advisory groups, and the opening of the new Science Lab. Congratulations to all those involved for the hard work and successful transition to this new model. With the expanded middle school, managing these costs and growing needs is an important part of our budget work going forward.

Tuition revenue grew to $10.3 million in 2016-17 from $9.6 million the prior year due to enrollment growth and tuition increases. Tuition assistance was nearly $1.2 million last year, near the Board’s directive of 15% of primary and middle school tuition revenue. That leaves net tuition

revenue of $9.1 million, up from $8.6 million the prior year. Operating expenses for the year, however, were $9.8 million. It is only through contributions to the Annual Fund and other campaigns, ancillary revenue from summer camp, after school programs, and the Parents Association, that we are able to operate at a surplus and continue to strengthen our balance sheet.

Establishing strong enrollment and continuing to build our balance sheet are critical factors in reaching our longterm goals for the School. The middle school expansion provides an opportunity for program enhancement and increased long-term financial stability. Robust fundraising and strong enrollment allow us to continue to fund the best program for our students while also building key financial reserves.

As we look ahead to the School’s future, we know that the generous support of our entire community will continue to play an important role. Gifts from our charitable donors are essential to the exceptional programs and singular atmosphere at MP&MS. The contributions made today will have an invaluable and lasting impact on MP&MS for years to come.

Julie’s Art Deck At the annual Parents Association Auction, 80’s Bash, Marin Primary & Middle School announced plans for the building of Julie’s Art Deck in honor of retiring Head of School, Julie Elam. It was the school’s largest Fund-a-Need effort and with the generous support of our donors, this project was funded in one night! This art deck will provide an expanded space for students to explore as learners, display areas and storage for projects and tools, natural light for artistic enhancement, and outdoor access for project-based learning. The addition of a long anticipated art deck in Julie’s name will support and facilitate the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, commonly known as STEAM. Over the years, Julie has brought her passion and conviction about the importance of STEAM education to MP&MS in transformative and innovative ways. Julie’s leadership and initiatives have always been underscored by the premise that exceptional teaching must take place with exceptional tools, including classrooms that accommodate the latest technology and resources. The art deck will honor Julie’s legacy with an inspiring, flexible, and unique learning space and will exemplify her longstanding commitment to providing our students with outstanding STEAM education.

Thank You to Our Science Lab Donors The 2016-2017 school year saw MP&MS open of a state-ofthe-art facility that will bolster an enhanced and advanced curriculum across grades. Designed to support an innovative and nimble program that can respond to changes in our rapidly evolving world, the labs have both indoor and outdoor spaces adjacent to the Outdoor Education Center, art studio, and music room, and will provide opportunities for integrated projects, research, and experiments.

Philanthropic gifts to the School make an enormous impact in the teachers we hire, the small group instruction we provide, the art, drama, and music programs we offer, and the success our students achieve after graduation. In short, every aspect of our program is touched by the generosity of our community.

In the spring, Major Donors ($5,000+) to the 2016-2017 Annual Fund and Science Lab project were invited for a special gathering in recognition of their generosity and commitment to the School. This festive dinner party was held in the newly opened Science Lab and featured cocktails, a catered dinner, toasts, and celebration of the many milestones and accomplishments made possible by the philanthropic giving of our exceptional community.

How has parent support and participation helped you accomplish your goals as a teacher?

Kristi: As a teacher, I am so grateful for the parents who support our field trips. Extending student learning beyond the classroom helps us create a well-rounded educational experience that enhances academics and deepens learning.

Without the willingness of these generous parent volunteers to be drivers and active participants, we wouldn’t be able to provide the enrichment that off-campus experiences offer.

Sarah: I have learned so much from our amazing parents when they participate in Parent Share in third grade. We have had a range of presentations, from sharing family cookie recipes to demonstrating how guitars are made to explaining how airplanes work. I love this part of our curriculum, not only because we all learn so much, but because of the important SEL component; it’s such a great opportunity for a child to take pride in his or her family.

Pledge A pledge is a commitment to make a gift. By letting us know in the fall that we can count on your support this year, we can budget accordingly and ensure that all of our programs and activities are fully funded.
