INVITATION FROM A MASTER ARTIST

The Chakrabhand Posayakrit Museum opens its doors with an invitation to enter the world of the National Artist himself. Set within his private residence, the museum serves as a dedicated permanent home for the masterpieces of Chakrabhand, who was recognised as national artist in 2000. As well as displaying his renowned paintings, the museum also showcases the artist’s collection of traditional Thai arts including more than 300 intricately crafted puppets used in performances of the Sam Kok (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and Taleng Phai.

Open every Sunday from 10am to 4pm, the museum offers a rare, intimate encounter with works typically seen only in publications or private collections. Group visits are available on Wednesdays by appointment. In Thailand, devotees gather at temples from dawn to offer alms, listen to sermons, and participate in rituals of mindfulness and meritmaking. As night falls, candlelit processions flow through temple grounds in a quiet rhythm to honour the Buddha, his teachings, and the monastic community. The sacred day resonates across borders where it is known as Vixakha Bouxa in Laos, Wesak in Malaysia and Singapore, Phat Dan in Vietnam, and Visak Bochea in Cambodia. The Season that Sustains

The monsoon brings Southeast Asia alive, as ritual and renewal spring up in the rain The monsoon in Southeast Asia is a time of waiting. Flights are delayed and beach plans reconsidered, because for many, the travelling season only begins when skies are clear and blue. But visitors who arrive in the region during monsoon don’t find holiday destinations resting and empty – they are alive with work.

The rains hold life together. In Thailand, paddy fields grow into pools, ready for planting.

The Mekong swells along its long path through Laos. The Tonlé Sap in Cambodia expands dramatically, feeding fisheries, the wetlands and rice fields that depend on its annual change of direction. Even coral reefs benefit from the cool rains. The landscape changes daily: gleaming greenery dominates the scene, rivers change colour, and the air feels heavy, yet cleaner.

In Thailand’s Northeast, the green season is welcomed with a bang during the Rocket Festival, or Boun Bang Fai. Monks turned rocket scientists lead villagers to fields ready for planting to fire off

homemade rockets in all directions.

Celebrations also feature a mud dance, music and plenty of laughter. The message to the rain gods is simple and age-old: “Please send rains so the rice will grow.”

For travellers, the monsoon means more than just a change in the weather – the pace of life also shifts gears.

Visitor numbers drop, easing the pressure on water supplies, power grids and waste systems after the strain of peak season.

But for communities that rely on tourism, guests in the rainy season can be a lifeline to stability. Businesses can plan ahead, and tourism feels less like a cutthroat competition to survive and more like something sustainable and manageable.

The way people move also changes.

Without the pressure to tick off every tourist attraction, journeys stretch out. Trains replace flights, boats make sense again, and spending longer in one place brings

connection and familiarity – not to mention a lower carbon footprint.

Food follows the same path. The rains serve up a bounty for every table: freshwater fish, just picked herbs, local vegetables and forest mushrooms that pop up during storms.

Meals are shaped by local weather rather than global supply chains – less curated and more connected.

Travelling during the wet season means letting go of control. Downpours disrupt and plans change. In Luang Prabang, travellers chasing the sunset may find themselves under a dripping café awning, listening to the rain drum upon temple roofs instead. In Cambodia, watching the Tonlé Sap swell may inspire more awe than an Angkor Wat sunrise.

The green season doesn’t promise postcardperfect scenes – it offers a new perspective.

Beyond the polished tourism facade, Southeast Asia reveals its truer face: seasonal, adaptable and quietly resilient.

OVERTURES JUST DESSERT

A Courtly Confection Western baking traditions met local ingredients in King Narai’s court and gave birth to Khanom Phing However, Maria faced one big challenge: how to recreate the recipe with local Thai ingredients.

She substituted wheat flour with tapioca starch and added rich, fragrant coconut milk for a silky texture and unmistakable aroma, before baking the mixture Western-style. Served hot from the oven, Khanom Phing became a big hit in the royal court.

Phing describes the method of slow-baking the tiny cookies on iron trays, resulting in pale ivory balls with a soft golden tint that crunch before melting in the mouth, leaving a mellow sweetness and comforting coconut flavour.

Khanom Phing stands out for the simplicity of its ingredients and cooking method. But patience and care are required to achieve the perfect balance of flavour, shape and melt-inyour-mouth texture.

To create these tiny treats, tapioca flour is dry-roasted in a pan and then set aside to cool. In a separate pan, coconut milk and sugar are stirred gently together to create a thick and slightly clumpy mixture. The flour is then folded into the sweet coconut milk with an egg. The mixture is kneaded into a soft pliable dough and left to rest for at least 10 hours – long enough to infuse the cookies’ delicate flavour.

The dough is then pinched and rolled into tiny balls, which are placed on a baking tray in a conventional oven (heat from both top and bottom) until lightly golden.

Traditionally, the cookies are gently infused overnight with candle smoke, creating a golden hued, lightly fragrant and completely irresistible snack by morning.

Many of Thailand’s traditional desserts originated in the kitchen of a remarkable woman who rose to fame over 300 years ago in the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

Maria Guyomar de Pinha – also known by her Thai name, Thao Thong Kip Ma – was a Siamese woman of mixed Portuguese, Japanese and Bengali descent married to Greek adventurer Constantine Phaulkon, counsellor to King Narai.

After Phaulkon was executed following an uprising against the king, Maria was put to work in the royal kitchens – where she got busy writing a sweet new chapter in Thai culinary history.

Today, she is famous as the woman who introduced Western-style desserts to the people of Siam. Among her inspirations was Broinhas, a spiced pumpkin cookie popular in Portugal.

The landscape unfolds in shades of sparkling blue and green as the plane descends in southern Thailand. From the window, you see plantations of swaying palms and waterways snaking through green mangroves. But the South is shaped as much by belief as by geography. In villages scattered around Songkhla Lake, Nora – Thailand’s oldest spiritual dance – still holds a sacred place in people’s lives.

Part dance, part theatre, and part ritual, Nora performances mesmerise audiences with dazzling costumes, acrobatic moves and amazing choreography. The movements of dancers also carry a mystical power, invoking the living soul of southerners and the unseen spirits of their ancestors.

While Nora may look like mere tourist entertainment, for locals it is a bridge between the human realm and the afterlife.

TAPESTRY OF BELIEF Nora (also known as Manora) has been woven into southern Thai culture for centuries. But the pulse of this ancient tradition beats strongest among the communities living around Songkhla Lake.

On stage, stories unfold in shimmering movements and improvised dialogue. Dressed in bright costumes – and long, curved metallic fingernails resembling bird talons – performers move with remarkable agility, bending, spinning and stamping in time with the notes of barrel drums, gongs and reed pipes. The graceful movements are believed to be influenced

by South India’s ancient dance form – Bharanatyam.

Beneath its dazzling spectacle, Nora is rooted in age-old rituals to honour the dance master, appease ancestral spirits, and mark important community events.

Through their movements, the dancers seek the blessings of their artistic forbears while reaffirming the region’s unique cultural identity.

In 2021, UNESCO inscribed Nora onto the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a global nod to this ancient storytelling dance and the vibrant communities keeping its spirit alive.

While Nora dancers are proud of the international recognition, they know the real power of the dance lies in its centuries-old sacred movements.

ANCIENT SPIRITS COME ALIVE At the heart of Nora is the Rong Khru ceremony, which pays homage to the masters who have carried this living art through the generations.

COSTUMES STRAIGHT FROM PARADISE Before a single movement is made, it is the extraordinary costumes that catch the eye. The spectacular creations are inspired by the Kinaree – the mythological half-woman, half-bird creature of the Himmapan forest.

Resplendent in brightly coloured silk and shimmering beads that catch the light with every turn, the performers appear to have stepped fresh from a mythical realm.

Their backs are adorned with intricately decorated wings and tails that ripple dramatically with every movement. Atop the head sits the Serd, a tall ceremonial crown worn only by performers initiated into the tradition.

But the most distinctive feature is the curling metal fingernail extensions, worn to amplify the dancers’ elegant movements. Take a closer look or zoom in with a camera if you want to appreciate the secrets of Nora’s mesmerising beauty.

The overall effect is breathtaking: as the dancers spin across the stage, their costumes flicker and flash like a bird of paradise in flight.

MUSIC IN MOTION Nora is shaped by its music, with dancers and musicians engaging in a lively rhythmic dialogue. Drums set a tone of spirited energy while the melodic Pi (reed pipe) weaves in notes of sweetness touched with melancholy and solitude.

Unlike stage performances with a script, Nora relies on improvisation and spontaneous inspiration. Dancers may sing the verses, tease the musicians, and even joke with the audience. The atmosphere shifts constantly, from sacred ritual to vibrant spectacle. This fluidity is what keeps the performance alive – no two shows are the same.

A SHARED HERITAGE Nora’s roots lie in Thailand, but over the centuries this ancient ritual has strutted across the Malay Peninsula and beyond.

The tradition still flourishes in northern Malaysia, particularly in states like Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis, where dual-language performances in Thai and Malay reflect its shared cultural heritage.

Yet Nora’s spiritual home remains in Thailand’s southern tip, where the sacred dance continues to evolve with the communities who created it.

The dance also faces the same modern pressures as many traditional art forms; the younger generation is moving away to large cities, and global entertainment is competing for attention.

But Nora endures, thanks to masters who devote their lives to sharing their knowledge with young learners. Apprentices spend years mastering the demanding

techniques, musical timing and ritual knowledge required of a Nora dancer.

The dance form is now leaping onto a national stage, as festivals and cultural institutions introduce it to wider audiences. Yet the most meaningful performances still take place in village settings – temple courtyards, community gatherings and local ceremonies.

WHERE TO WITNESS THE MAGIC For those exploring southern Thailand, Nora offers a rare window into a living tradition. You may chance upon a performance in temple grounds, where costumes gleam under soft lantern light and the steady pulse of drums echoes through the night. Villagers sit cross-legged around a makeshift stage, as performers spin and stamp across the ground.

The best place to watch a Nora performance is in Phatthalung’s Wat Tha Khae, the temple believed to be the birthplace of the dance form. In early May, more than 100 Nora performers and masters gather at the temple for three days and three nights to perform the dance for both ritual and entertainment.

The flickering candles, rhythmic drums, sweet pipes and glittering costumes create a mood that’s both festive and sacred.

Thailand is famous for its temples, food and tropical beaches. But its deeper spirit can be found in living traditions like Nora, which has helped shape life in the far South for centuries.

For travellers seeking a more profound connection, Nora offers something rare: an encounter with the enduring rhythms of southern Thailand’s spiritual and cultural world.

n the turquoise heart of the Maldives, a crescent-shaped bay stages a spectacle so extraordinary that it can change something deep within you. Two of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures perform a rhythmic dance in a natural arena flooded by a luminous glow seen nowhere else on Earth.

It appears just after dawn, when the Indian Ocean is still and the sky above Baa Atoll shifts from grey to gold to an impossibly limpid blue. Look down from the edge of a dhoni and you can see the floor of the ocean through waters as clear as glass. And somewhere there, hundreds of manta rays are winging.

This is Hanifaru Bay – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve tucked within Baa Atoll, some 100 kilometres north of Malé, and one of the most astonishingly beautiful stretches of ocean on the planet.

The bay is shaped like a spoon: a long, narrow channel opens into a shallow bowl enclosed by coral reefs. On the surface, it appears almost unremarkable – until the southwest monsoon arrives and transforms everything.

Between May and November, monsoon winds shift the Indian Ocean’s currents westwards, turning Hanifaru Bay into a giant net. As plankton blooms, manta rays and whale sharks glide in for the feast, as if answering an invitation to a grand banquet. Visitors fortunate enough to slip underwater on the right day, at the right time, and under the right phase of the moon, will witness one of nature’s most spectacular hidden wonders.

NATURE’S GRAND DESIGN The Maldives is a geological improbability: 1,192 islands scattered across 26 atolls – ring-shaped coral formations that encircle shallow lagoons of ethereal beauty.

The country spans around 800 kilometres from north to south, yet its highest point is barely 2 metres above the sea. This is a nation made almost entirely of horizons.

Baa Atoll sits in the north of the archipelago, and Hanifaru Bay nestles within it like a secret. By June, the bay begins to fill with vast clouds of plankton. Unlike the shimmering, sequin-like drifters found elsewhere, the plankton here is darker and very much alive – black-bodied krill that bite, stain the water like ink, and are swallowed by manta rays by the tonne.

GATHERING OF GIANTS A veteran of the deep, underwater photographer Jariya Posayajinda has captured marine wonders from the Red Sea to tropical coral reefs. But when describing Hanifaru Bay, she becomes hushed, reluctant to disturb a sacred memory.

“There were hundreds of them.

You hide behind a rock and stay absolutely still, because they don’t come in single file but like a wall,” she says.

The plankton wall parts to reveal reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi), ocean giants with a wingspan of 3 to 4 metres. Moving in formation to filter the plankton, they resemble a thunderstorm blowing in – black, deliberate, and spectacular.

What Jariya captured through her lens while wedged behind a rock is known as “cyclone feeding”. The manta rays form a loose spiral, each tilting its great cephalic fins forward to funnel the plankton into its cavernous mouth as they revolve together like a slowmotion tornado. The effect, says Jariya, was like watching a prehistoric ritual choreographed by the tides.

“They were gliding in circles, opening their mouths, scooping… it was like watching them dance… an underwater ballet. I forgot about my camera and just watched, fascinated.”

Jariya advises other visitors here to keep their fingers crossed and carry a camera. Nature’s grandest spectacles don’t follow a schedule, but the uncertainty only makes their arrival more extraordinary.

In Hanifaru Bay, patience is often rewarded with a miracle.

SWIMMING WITH GIANTS If manta rays are the bay’s ballet dancers, then whale sharks are its prima donnas. Moving slowly and with a vast gravity, their sheer size requires a mental shift to process.

The Rhincodon whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, commonly reaching up to 10 metres long – though they can double in size at full maturity and weigh over 20 tonnes. These grey creatures, with pale white or yellow markings, glide serenely by like sleek airships.

Like the manta ray, they arrive in Hanifaru on the plankton tide and are indifferent to humans if left undisturbed.

The best way to enjoy them is to float completely still and wait for them to come to you. The view of an approaching whale shark is majestic,” Jariya says.

Snorkelling is the only way to encounter manta rays and whale sharks in Hanifaru Bay; scuba diving is banned because air-tank bubbles disturb the shy giants.

The secret is to hover just below the surface, embracing a quiet intimacy with only a mask and snorkel separating you from these magnificent creatures.

Travellers seeking to dive deeper with whale sharks can head to Ari and South Ari atolls, where scuba encounters are permitted all year round. North Malé Atoll is another reliable option during the season.

THE MOON AND THE SEA At Hanifaru, timing is everything.

Experienced divers and marine photographers keep two things handy: a tide chart and a lunar calendar. High tide brings clearer water, greater visibility, and deeper blues – a perfect setting to capture pin-sharp images. The best time is typically three to five days either side of a full or new moon, when stronger tides drag in fresh blooms of plankton.

Boats and liveaboards from Baa Atoll resorts queue for scheduled entry windows – the bay’s UNESCO status means access is limited, visitor numbers controlled, and the ecosystem given room to breathe.

It’s easy to feel resentful of these regulations when you’re on a waiting list, but impossible not to respect them when you are underwater and captivated by the pristine wildlife.

DRESS CODE: ALL BLACK Though it sounds like the dress code for a posh dinner, underwater photographers make it a point to don all black. Wetsuits, gloves, and fins must all be dark, as pale skin can be perceived by marine life as distressed – something even the gentlest sharks are wired to investigate. A full-body black wetsuit allows you to disappear into the shadows, capturing the raw beauty of the underwater scene.

WHAT YOU TAKE HOME The true scale of Hanifaru Bay cannot be gauged in wingspan measurements, migration distances, or lunar tide charts. This is one of the few remaining places on our planet where nature still reigns and we, in our smallness, can only watch in silent awe.

The moment a manta ray glides just a few feet overhead – silent, slow, its white belly catching the filtered light – you learn a humbling lesson in proportion. As a whale shark turns towards you in the deep, its tail sweeping through a wide, slow arc, you understand viscerally that we are visitors in a world that predates us by several hundred millennia.

Visitors leave Hanifaru with memory cards stuffed with images and tired muscles from hours of snorkelling. Yet, they also carry home something more profound: a revelation of natural grandeur, a clear sense of their place within it, and an urgent need to preserve it.

Bangsaen Grand Prix: The Beachside Racing Festival Every first weekend of July, the sleepy seaside town of Bangsaen transforms into a world-class motor-racing circuit as sleek machines rev up for the Bangsaen Grand Prix.
