2026 Annual Report - Madison Public Library and Madison Public Library Foundation

Page 1

IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES

With you alongside us we didn’t just sustain library resources in 2025, we expanded access to popular digital collections like Libby and Kanopy, and welcomed over 1.4 million visitors through our doors.

As we celebrated Madison Public Library’s 150th anniversary, we also looked to our future, breaking ground on Madison’s first new library location in a generation.

Your support could not have come at a more critical time. Across the country, libraries faced growing uncertainty as federal funding came under threat. Many libraries were forced to reduce hours, staffing, and services communities rely on.

Yet here in Madison, donors like you chose action over uncertainty. Our dedicated donors made an immediate difference close to home, ensuring that everyone in Madison continues to have opportunities to learn, connect, and grow, regardless of financial circumstances.

When libraries needed champions , you showed up, and our community is stronger because of it.

Set to open in fall 2026, the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park will expand access to library services for 20,000 Madisonians. Nearly 9% of nearby residents lack internet access at home.

For all those who have given to our capital campaign so far, thank you! Because of you, we’re not just constructing a building. We’re creating a community hub for education, workforce development, and wellness.

Your gifts support lifelong learning. From early literacy programs to writing groups for seniors, libraries bring people together to experience the joy of language.

Your gifts also spark creativity. From hands-on arts and music programs at libraries citywide, to Wisconsin Book Festival’s 90+ free author events, you inspired imagination.

Every dollar donated to Madison Public Library Foundation strengthens the library’s ability to serve. Your generosity allows the library to offer innovative programming that is responsive to community needs, complete critical infrastructure projects, and so much more. With private support we are able to build on the basis taxpayer dollars provide.

As we imagine the possibilities, we invite you to keep the momentum going .

• Visit us this summer. Readers of all ages are invited to participate in WE READ, our summer reading program, and to find the library at Parks Alive and other neighborhood events citywide.

• Encourage others to sign up for a library card: Your card is your ticket to free resources that educate and entertain.

• One of the most meaningful ways you can inspire the future is through your continued support of the Foundation. We invite you to make a tax-deductible gift at mplfoundation.org/donate/

Thank you for being a champion of Madison Public Library this year. With your help, possibilities are taking shape in every neighborhood. Join us in imagining what’s next.

With gratitude,

Library Misson

Imagine the Possibilities

Since its inception, Madison Public Library has been at the forefront of how our city imagines what’s possible. Where strong libraries exist, thriving communities follow. Libraries in our neighborhoods are more than just buildings. They are welcoming third spaces beyond home and work, places to take shelter from the heat or the cold, and environments that welcome everyone, with no exceptions.

In the pages ahead, discover a few of the ways that your philanthropy made an impact in 2025.

Opening in fall 2026, the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park will expand library access on Madison’s northeast side.

Where there’s a gap, your gift builds a bridge

In 2025, we broke ground on the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park , opening in fall 2026. As the city’s tenth library takes shape, it will integrate new public art, landscape design, and a rentable four-seasons pavilion.

Donor support will help expand internet and technology access for nearby residents pursuing education, employment, civic participation, and everyday connection.

Here are a few more ways that your gifts created more equitable access and a Madison where everyone can thrive:

• Lowering hold times for popular e-books and audiobooks on Libby

• Bringing books to the neighborhoods through Dream Bus stops

• Purchasing audio-enabled books that support children and adults in language learning

• Providing portable page magnifiers for homebound individuals

• Expanding library card access through a Library Card Month campaign that increased signups by 18.6% over the previous year

Imagine belonging , built in

When you support library programming , you help children and their caregivers experience the joy of language and culture together. Each month, families gather to hear stories and sing songs in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

African Children’s Story Hours connect families to stories from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Egypt and Morocco. These programs support early literacy while fostering joy, recognition, and belonging.

At Chinese Storytime at Sequoya Library, families enjoy stories and crafts. The program is presented

Here are a few more ways that your gifts create a sense of belonging:

Making beginning and intermediate English classes available on Saturdays, expanding access for

Providing after-school snacks that help students feel welcomed and

Supporting the Making Justice Bubbler program for at-risk and court-involved youth

Purchasing laptops with microphones and cameras so patrons can access virtual meetings, job interviews, and essential services

Imagine if creativity were free and accessible in every Madison neighborhood

Thanks to donors like you, the 150 Artists x 150 Years exhibit brought newly commissioned artwork celebrating our shared history to libraries across the city. Through year-round programs, Madisonians of all ages gathered for handson art, music, and creative expression.

The Wisconsin Book Festival presented 92 events featuring bestselling and award-winning writers alongside emerging local voices, drawing 14,000 attendees. Your generosity also made it possible for seven authors to visit schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District, inspiring and engaging 1,300 students.

Wisconsin Book Festival attendees received free copies of The Mother-Daughter Book Club at an author event with Susan and James Patterson.

Here are a few more ways that your gifts sparked creativity:

• Purchasing art supplies for children’s and teen art classes at libraries citywide

• Adding new music and movement classes that support early childhood learning

• Inviting adults to explore creativity through summer art events

• Bringing Bubbler artists into neighborhoods through artist-in-residence programs

• Making record players and vinyl albums available to borrow

Imagine spaces where community takes shape

Sometimes belonging begins with something simple: a seat at the table or an invitation to sign up for a library card. in 2025, infrastructure projects and community room refreshes were undertaken, thanks to donor support, making libraries more comfortable and welcoming for all.

When donors support refurbishment projects, they’re making it possible for neighbors to gather for meals, children to participate in clubs that fuel their interests, and more people to be able to attend programs like Teejop & Beyond (pronounced day-JOPE, meaning Four Lakes, or Madison). Each fall, Madison Public Library and Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison welcome Native artists, storytellers, and leaders to share knowledge, creativity, and cultural traditions through programs in library spaces.

Here are a few more ways that you helped community take root:

• Creating nourishing spaces with furniture updates that make libraries feel more welcome

• Supporting heating and cooling upgrades that kept guests comfortable year-round

• Making it possible for 90 people to enjoy disc golf with friends using borrowed equipment

• Giving children the chance to build cooking skills while preparing food for neighbors

• Paying for an intern creating marketing materials for inclusive wellness programs

Community members joined artist Charlotte Easterling for Teejop and Beyond: Layers of Nature at Lakeview Library.

Central hubs for community life and civic engagement

Libraries support learning, workforce development, democracy, and connection. Your gifts sustain critical civic infrastructure that is essential, not simply nice to have. In 2025 alone, 20,000 Madisonians cast their ballots at neighborhood libraries, while 4,800 neighbors registered to vote. Nearly 69% of all in-person absentee voting took place at local libraries.

Computers equipped with video meeting technology helped residents participate in town forums and public meetings. Your generosity also maintained and expanded access to trusted tools that support media literacy skills, including librarian-vetted databases, newspapers, and periodicals.

Here are a few more ways you promoted civic participation:

• Maintaining birding backpacks, Olbrich Butterfly tickets, and seed library supplies to foster an appreciation of nature, and its stewardship

• Funding ADA-accessible workstations that expand access to software and internet resources

• Supporting English as a Second Language classes and audio-enabled books for children and adults

• Making 900 book club kit checkouts possible, bringing neighbors together for conversation and connection

Thousands of Madison residents cast their ballots at neighborhood libraries, including Hawthorne Library, during the 2025 election cycle.
