MPHPL introduces a new reading challenge for children, teens, & adults. In this challenge, you determine your own

reading goals.

Step 1: Pick up a Summer Reading Challenge form at any of our service desks or print one from the MPHPL website.

Beginning June 1, keep track of books you’ve read by marking minutes or number of titles. The back side of the challenge form contains squares for you to customize to fit your reading goal! If you are a parent, you and your child will determine the reading goal together. Whether you read with someone or read on your own, customize the challenge to fit you! Make sure if you are reading to someone else that you count it towards your goal too. It all counts!

Return your Summer Reading Challenge form to either Adult Services or Youth Services at any of our locations for prize redemption. Everyone who completes the challenge will receive a new book of choice!

Wednesday, June 16 2:30-3:30 pm | Entering Grades 3-7 Learn how to draw cartoon characters and animals with cartoonist Rick Stromoski. Participants will gain an understanding of how to create an infinite number of characters and a variety of expressions just by altering a few shapes and/or lines to a drawing. 3D Paper Crafts: Patriotic Rosette

Feline Felt Friends

Create a 3-dimensional work of art made of paper in this bi-monthly program. We will be creating a patriotic rosette. Registration is required. Details on when and where to pick up program supplies will be sent via email to registrants.

If you were an eagle, you could look out from the tenth floor of a skyscraper and see an ant crawling on the ground! If you were a hummingbird, you could wave your arms fifty times a second! From ultra-light hollow bones to razor-sharp talons, birds have incredible adaptations that help them survive and thrive in all sorts of places. Join a St. Joseph County Park naturalist to investigate feathers, nests, and songs as we uncover the mysteries of the birds that share our cities, farms, and parks with us. Registration is required.

Want to spice up your meals? Registrants will receive a sample pack of the spice of the month, a brief historical background, and a couple of recipes that highlight the spice’s taste. Come and discuss your opinions, experience, and love (or hate) of the spice of the month.

Wednesday, July 21 10:15-11 am | All Ages Have you always wanted to visit the famous San Diego Zoo but have never had the opportunity? We have a solution for you! We’ll be taking a virtual tour of this popular zoo over Zoom. We’ll watch live feeds of various exhibits throughout the zoo and learn about the various animals that we see. Registration is required.

It’s time to entertain your purr-fect pet! With a little hot glue and imagination, we will make a yarn ball catnip toy and a musical feather stick. Ask Mike the Appraiser: What’s It Worth?

Middle Earth Adult Trivia Night

Mike Ivankovich, host of the What’s It Worth? radio show in Philadelphia, will share how to determine value, do 1-on1 appraisals, and present buying & selling tips/strategies throughout the program. Program is limited to 30 appraisals (one per participant); additional attendees are welcome to view and listen to the presentation. Registration is required.

Think you’re the smartest Tolkienite around? Show how well you know The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings during this Middle Earth trivia event! We’ll be focusing mainly on the books (we are a library!) but there will also be questions about the popular film adaptations of these books as well.
