January 3 - February 28 | All Ages Join our Winter Reading Challenge for all ages! This year’s theme is “Reading for the Chill of It” and we have a variety of activities for you to complete. Visit any MPHPL location at any service desk on or after Monday, December 20 to pick up a Reading Challenge card or download a Reading Challenge card from our website. Participation is easy, just mark one square for each unique reading (or listening) activity you complete. Return your completed card for a book of your choice and an automatic entry into our special prize drawing for a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card. One gift card will be selected for children, teen and adult. Curbside service is available for pick up and returns if you prefer. Seeing the northern lights in person can be difficult, but we have an alternative solution! Join us for this virtual tour of the northern lights, where we’ll learn all about this fascinating phenomenon and watch videos of the lights in action. Registration required.

Family F ort Day Saturday, January 15 Bittersweet Branch | 10:15-11 a.m. Mishawaka Library | 3-3:45 p.m. Bring the whole family and build a fort together with boxes, blankets, pillows and more! After we build our forts, we’ll relax in them as we enjoy a fun, family-friendly story. Some materials will be provided for fort building, but families are encouraged to bring their own. Ready to travel the world? During this fun and informative session, you’ll learn all about countries from around the world. Craft, activity and recipe resources will be provided so you can experience a little bit of the country from home. This month we will travel to Argentina. Registration required. Details on when and where to pick up program supplies will be sent via email to registrants.

Saturday, March 26 | 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Mishawaka Library | Youth Activity Room | 5th Graders TEAM REGISTRATION & BOOK REVEAL

Beginning Monday, January 3 | All Locations | 5th Graders Participants form their own teams of three to six kids and they read six pre-selected books. Team members can be from the same school, different schools or home-schoolers. Team managers must register the team and attend the Team Managers’ meeting via Zoom. Book reveal and book pick up begins on Monday, January 3. Titles will be revealed on our Battle of the Books page on the MPHPL website, Facebook and at our Youth Service desks. One set of the six Battle of the Books titles will be provided to each team. Only the team manager will be able to checkout a set of books for their team. Please indicate your pick up location on your registration form when registering via online registration. Team registration will continue until Friday, January 28 OR until a limit of 25 teams has been reached.

TEAM MANAGERS’ MEETING

Thursday, January 27 | Zoom | 6:30 pm A Zoom link will be sent to registered managers prior to the event. Managers will receive rules and procedures about the Battle of the Books along with tips to help teams study and prepare.

Books & Babies is a structured 30 minute program that combines short rhymes, songs, fingerplays, movement activities, and books to introduce children to the wonder of language. Sessions are limited to 15 participants.

Toddler Time is a structured 30 minute program in which books, story related activities, and take-home crafts provide an enjoyable group experience. Sessions are limited to 30 participants.

Children may enter the room independently; caregivers must remain in the library. Preschool Pals is a structured 30 minute program in which books, story related activities, and take-home crafts are used to increase early literacy skills and kindergarten readiness. Sessions are limited to 30 participants.

Everyone has heard about streaming services, but what and how many services should you sign up for? We’ll talk about streaming services and devices and what you need to successfully cut the cord. Introduction to First Steps Tuesday, January 11 7–7:45 p.m. | Adults (18+) Virtual via Zoom

Parents and caregivers are invited to this informational session about First Steps. First Steps is Indiana’s early intervention program that provides services to children from birth to their third birthday who have developmental delays or disabilities. The goal of First Steps is to help Hoosier families make sure their infants and toddlers receive services now to help them in the future. Services through First Steps are designed to meet the developmental needs of the child. Registration required.

UNATTENDED CHILD POLICY The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library strives to provide an environment conducive to lifelong learning and the personal development of its users. The MPHPL staff is committed to helping children with activities related to the library. Library staff cannot, nor is it their responsibility to serve as babysitters, teachers, or disciplinarians.

Parents are responsible for the behavior of their children while they are in the library.

Children 11 years of age and younger must be accompanied and directly supervised at all times by a parent or other responsible person age 14 or older.

Children 12 years of age and older may use the library unattended subject to the library rules and policies concerning behavior, conduct, and demeanor.

What do I need for a library card at the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library? To obtain your Library card you must: 1. Live in Penn or Harris Township, or have a home Library card from a Library system which is reciprocal with MPHPL (some restrictions may apply).

Lending Limits: - Books & Audiobooks - No Limit - Magazines, Music CDs, & Playaways - No Limit - New Release DVDs - 3 per card - Entertainment DVDs - 20 per card - TV Series & Non-Fiction DVDs - 20 per card

Fees and Fines: - New Release DVDs - $1 per day - All other items - 25¢ per day

2. Provide required documentation (1) a valid photo ID with current address OR (2) a valid photo ID and proof of current address if ID address is not current OR (3) a valid photo ID and a valid resident home Library card for reciprocal applicants 3. A parent/legal guardian's signature is required for any minor under the age of 18 wishing to register for or renew a Library card. *Non-residents may purchase a fee card. Contact Circulation Services for prices. If your card is stolen, please call Circulation Services at any MPHPL location. You are financially responsible for material that is checked out until you report your card lost or stolen.
