Solar Eclipse Watch Party

Bittersweet Branch | Mon., April 8 | 2-4:30 p.m. | All Ages

On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. Join us for a solar eclipse watch party at our Bittersweet Branch. We will have snacks, games and activities for everyone. Check-in will begin at 1:45 p.m. and each registrant will receive one pair of solar eclipse glasses to watch the event.

Please note: if inclement weather occurs, the event will be canceled.

Adult caregivers must directly supervise participants 9 years of age and younger; caregivers must remain on the premises for participants 10-11 years of age.

Solar Eclipse Glasses Distribution

With funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Space Science Institute, through its Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL) program is distributing five-million solar-viewing glasses to 10,000 libraries. MPHPL is a proud recipient of a limited supply of solar eclipse glasses courtesy of the STAR Library Network (STAR Net).

If you register for our Solar Eclipse Watch Party, you will automatically receive a pair of eclipse glasses the day of the event.

Can’t make the party?

Patrons may receive up to three pairs of eclipse glasses in-person beginning Mon., March 25 at all Youth Services desks on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. No phone reservations.

Roz Puppets return to MPHPL for a spring break performance of The Boy Who Saw Martians. When a young shepherd is given a second chance at watching the village sheep, after several false wolf alarms, he is eager to prove himself trustworthy. But while performing his "sheeply" duties, questions arise as the wooly creatures begin to disappear.

Can the events be connected to a mysterious visitor's arrival? Will the village ever trust the shepherd again? Find out as the Roz Puppets perform this hilarious sequel to the classic Aesop Fable. Adult caregivers must directly supervise participants 9 years of age and younger; caregivers must remain on the premises for participants 10-11 years of age.

Registration required. Registration for all three Roz Puppet shows opens Wed., March 20. Visit mphpl.org to register. Information regarding show ticket redemption will be sent to registrants.

Virtual World Treat Tasting

MPHPL is once again partnering with the Mishawaka Parks Department to co-host a greenhouse storytime! Join us to hear stories and learn about community gardens in the Mishawaka Education Foundation Community Greenhouse (located at the corner of Broadway and Marion Street). After storytime, kids will get a take-home craft and can pick the plants that are in bloom!

Andy Heckroth will present St. Joseph Sluggers: Baseball in South Bend and Mishawaka. Andy is a lifetime baseball enthusiast. Join us as we learn about the many baseball players and teams intertwined in St. Joseph County history.

May 14: Historian and preservationist Susanna Ernst will present From Belgium to Mishawaka: West End Story. Susanna was born and raised in Mishawaka and is the author of Hooligan Heights: Mishawaka's Wild West. She currently serves as the President of the Northwest Chicago Historical Society. Join us as we learn how Mishawaka’s West End neighborhood became one of the largest Belgian districts in the United States.

Aaron Helman: Michiana’s Forgotten Characters

Aaron Helman, local author of An Incomplete History of St. Joseph County, Indiana and Ride the Jack Rabbit, will discuss three of Michiana’s most bonkers historical biographies: Richard Risley Carlisle, founder of New Carlisle; Edward Bonney, founder of Bonneyville; and the Huckleberry Queen of the Tyner Huck Marsh.

What do I need for a Library card?

To obtain your Library card you must:

1. Live in Penn or Harris township, or have a home Library card from a Library system which is reciprocal with MPHPL (some restrictions may apply).

2. Provide required documentation:

(1) a valid photo ID with current address OR

(2) a valid photo ID and proof of current address if ID address is not current OR

(3) a valid photo ID and a valid resident home Library card for reciprocal applicants

3. A parent/legal guardian's signature is required for any minor under the age of 18 wishing to register for or renew a Library card.

*Non-residents may purchase a fee card. Contact Circulation Services for prices.

If your card has been lost or stolen, please call Circulation Services at any MPHPL location. You are financially responsible for material that is checked out until you report your card lost or stolen.

Renewals:

- All DVDs - No renewals

- All other items - 3 renewals, as long as no one else has placed a hold on the item.

- Eligible items will be automatically renewed 4 days before their due date if there is not a hold on the item. You will receive a courtesy notice if your items have been renewed.

Holds:

Placing a hold is free and available for all materials, excluding new release DVDs.
