GENERAL INFORMATION CREDITS: A regular full year course will be completed in half of a school year, which in our block-scheduling format is two semesters. A student successfully completing both semesters of a full year course will receive 1.0 unit of credit. Courses that can be successfully completed in nine weeks (one semester) will equate to 0.5 units or 1.0 semester credits. A skinny course (half block) will equate to 0.25 units per semester and Instrumental or Vocal Music will each equate to 1.0 unit of credit for 4 semesters.

Drivers Education will equate to 0.5 units of credit.

GRADES: All classes will receive a letter grade with the exception of an internship and drivers education.

Grade point average and class rank will be determined using semester high school grades. All classes will count equally toward grade point average and class rank. Concurrent, PSEO and approved on line courses will be included in the high school cumulative grade point average.

CO URSE LO AD: All students will take four classes per semester with the exception of juniors and seniors who qualify for the late arrival/early release program. This program will be monitored every semester. Students who qualify for the program must be scheduled for at least 1.5 units of credit that semester.

Additional eligibility requirements for the late arrival/ early release program are explained in the student handbook.

INCO M PLETES: Students will receive an “I” or incomplete grade for a course that is not completed at the end of a semester. All unfinished work must be completed within two weeks from the end of the sem ester or grading period. It will be the responsibility of the student to complete the course work and turn it in within the two-week time frame. If the work is not completed in two weeks, the grade will automatically be entered as a failure. Unfinished work due to illness or other excused circumstances may be made up providing the student has made arrangements with the instructor.

SCHEDULE CHANGES: Students should carefully consider the courses they register for each spring. The master course schedule will be built around student requests from the spring registration process. Students may request a schedule change leading up to the semester a course is offered and during the first two days of a new semester. Requests for schedule changes will be determined by class size and consistency with a student’s four-year schedule. Students dropping a class after the first two days of a semester will receive an “F” grade on their transcript

HUM AN GRO W TH AND DEVELO PM ENT: State education standards provide for instruction in human growth and development in grades K-12.

Topics which can be covered in this instruction include: human growth and development, substance abuse and nonuse, emotional and social health, health resources, prevention and control of disease, current health issues, human sexuality, self esteem, stress management and interpersonal relationships.

EARLY GRADUATIO N: Students may graduate prior to the completion of grade twelve if the course work required for graduation under Board Policy 605.4 (Graduation Requirements) has been fulfilled.

The responsibility for meeting the graduation requirements lies with the student. Students meeting all requirements for graduation and electing to graduate early must apply for early graduation by the following dates: Decem ber 1 st for graduating after Sem ester 2. February 1 st for graduating after Sem ester 3. Applications can be picked up in the office.

EARLY COLLEGE OPTIONSCOLLEGE OPTIONS ADVANCED PLACEM ENT CO URSES: Mid-Prairie High School offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Calculus (AB), Biology, Chemistry, English, Psychology, U.S. History, Studio Art Drawing and Studio Art 2-D Design.

Students who complete these courses can take a standard AP exam. Many colleges and universities accept AP courses for college credit, depending upon individual AP exam scores.

CO NCURRENT ENRO LLM ENT CO URSES: Concurrent credit classes are Community College classes offered in the high school. Students receive both high school and college credit for passing the class. Students should expect to be doing college level work in these classes. Teachers have set requirements, which come from the college that students must meet to pass the class. It is not always possible for teachers to make accommodations/ modifications for special needs students for assignments and tests, beyond extra time. Students will not typically be given shorter assignments or different tests because of the college’s course requirements. College Credit accumulates on a Kirkwood Community College transcript and is usually accepted for transfer credit at other colleges and universities, depending on a student’s major. These classes must be passed to receive credit and failing one will show up as an F on both your high school and your college transcript. These courses MAY excuse you from taking an identical course at the college level, at the college’s discretion.

Concurrent enrollment courses receive both Mid-Prairie and selective college credit. Students taking a concurrent enrollment course must meet and follow all course guidelines of the respective college and understand that course performance becomes part of the individual’s permanent college record.

PO ST-SECO NDARY ENRO LLM ENT O PTIO NS ACT (PSEO ): The Post Secondary Enrollment Options Act provides an opportunity for assisting local school districts in expanding opportunities for capable students. The act was enacted in 1987 to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wider variety of options to high school students by enabling eleventh and twelfth grade students to enroll part time in courses in eligible post secondary institutions of higher learning in Iowa. Ninth and tenth grade students who have been identified as Talented and Gifted and any eleventh and twelfth grade students enrolled in public school districts can enroll in approved university, college or area college courses and receive credit that may be applied toward high school graduation. Post secondary courses, courses that are not comparable to courses offered by the MidPrairie High School, credit-bearing courses offered that lead to an educational degree, courses in the discipline areas of mathematics, science, social sciences, and humanities.

The Mid-Prairie Community School District will pay eligible claims for reimbursement to the post secondary institution in which Mid-Prairie students have successfully completed the enrolled course(s). Costs that may be claimed by a post secondary institution shall be limited to the lesser of the actual and customary costs of tuition, textbooks and materials, and fees directly related to the course taken by the eligible student or two hundred fifty dollars ($250). The parent or guardian shall furnish transportation to and from the post-secondary institution for the pupil. More information regarding the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Act may be obtained from the school counselor

COURSE EXEMPTIONS PHYSICAL EDUCATION: All physically able students shall be required to participate in physical education. Phys. Ed. will be counted as part of your grade point average. Students may be excused from physical education under the following circumstances: a) Physically unable to participate due to illness or injury. This may require a doctor's written excuse. b) Due to a conflict with the student’s religious beliefs. A student’s parent or guardian must file a written statement with the school principal if the course conflicts with the student’s religious beliefs.

If there is a direct conflict between P.E. and another academic class a conference will need to be held.

This will be between the student, parent, teacher, counselor and principal before opting out will be allowed.

HEALTH: Parents who object to health education instruction in human growth and development may file a written request with the principal for that the student to be excused from the instruction.

PARENT EDUCATION & LIFE MANAGEMENT Parents who object to the unit of instruction in human growth and development may file a written request with the principal for the student to be excused from this unit of instruction within the class. Students are not permitted to be exempt from enrollment in the entire Parenting & Life Management course, which is a graduation requirement. As per state law, parents may request and see all curriculum materials used in the Parenting & Life Management class.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS The Mid-Prairie School Board passed the following set of graduation requirements, which took effect beginning with the Class of 2009. The school board and the high school staff are committed to enhancing both the rigor and relevance in more effectively preparing our students for their future.

The high school graduation policy allows students to select the most relevant option based on their post secondary interest. All three options begin with State of Iowa Dept. of Education requirement of 4 units of English, 3 units of Science, Math and Social Studies. In addition, the school board enhanced our graduation options to address both the quantity of core classes required as well as the quality of relevant courses required. Each of the three options is a higher standard than the previous requirement and may qualify students for college admissions. The goal of the three options is to more effectively prepare students for their post secondary experience and to increase the rigor and relevance for every student.

TESTING GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Beginning the 2015-2016 school year the Mid-Prairie School board passed a policy requiring all students to have taken at least one of four assessments prior to graduation in preparation for their post secondary planning and requirements. These tests include the ACT (or SAT), Accuplacer/ALEKS, WorkKeys and the ASVAB. Mid-Prairie students who have selected the graduation option, Preparation for success at a 4-year college, need to complete the ACT (or SAT) as either of these tests are required for college admissions purposes. Students who have selected the Preparation for success at a 2-year college should take either the ACT (or SAT) OR the Accuplacer/ALEKS. Either of these tests will be used by a two-year college for course placement purposes. Note, if a student plans to begin at a two-year school and transfer to a four-year school, best practice is to complete the ACT (or SAT). Students who selected the Preparation for success in the W ork Force should consider taking the COMPASS &/or WorkKeys. Students pursuing the m ilitary are able to complete the ASVAB.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Specific curricular area standards are listed below and include both state and local course requirements. A regular full year course will be completed in 18 weeks with block scheduling and will equate to a 1.0 unit credit. There are classes that will be completed in 9 weeks, which will equate to 0.5 unit of credit or 1 semester credit. One unit of credit is equivalent to two semester credits. The number of credits required to graduate from Mid-Prairie High School is 28 units or 56 semester credits.

All three graduation requirements options will include the following requirements. Elective choices will depend on the graduation option selected. Approximately 60% of a student’s course of study will be required courses with the remaining 40% elective courses.

STANDARDIZED ASSESSM ENT PRO GRAM S Standardized testing plays a significant part in the planning process for post-high school transition.

The Mid-Prairie High School teachers and staff, parents, and students will collaborate to develop an appropriate four-year academic plan for each student. The MPHS testing plan is designed to comply with Iowa Department of Education requirements. In addition, these assessments provide helpful information about students’ strengths and interests. Finally, assessment results are analyzed to provide feedback regarding the effectiveness of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

STANDARDIZED ASSESSM ENTS IO W A ASSESSM ENTS: The Iowa Assessments are high school achievement tests that measure student performance in reading, vocabulary, math, social studies and science. Student scores are established as a national percentile rank (NPR) and a national standardized score (NSS). The purpose of the NPR score is to compare each student with students across the nation. Students must score at the 41st percentile or above to be considered “proficient� in the State of Iowa. Being proficient in the areas of reading, math and science is required to be eligible for most concurrent credit opportunities. The purpose of the NSS is to provide an indication of growth for each student. This assessment will be given at the high school in March to freshman, sophomores, and juniors.

ACT: Four-year colleges and universities for admission and college course placement purposes use the American College Test (ACT). It measures the skills necessary for college work in english, math, reading and science reasoning. The ACT is an optional test offered seven times throughout the year at off site locations. Students are responsible for their own registration available online at www.actstudent.org. This website also has information about college planning and test preparation.

It is recommended students take the ACT in the spring of their junior year. This gives students the opportunity to re-take the exam in the fall of their senior year if they choose. Either the ACT or the SAT is required for admission to most four-year colleges.

PSAT/NM SQ T: The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is used for the National Merit Scholarship competition. It is a practice SAT test that measures verbal and mathematical reasoning. This is an optional test for students in grade eleven (11). Students are responsible for the cost of the test which will be administered at Mid-Prairie in the fall.

ACCUPLACER & ALEKS: The Accuplacer & ALEKS tests have recently replaced the COMPASS test, used and administered by community colleges, such as Kirkwood. These computer based tests are used to evaluate academic skills in reading and writing (Accuplacer) and math (ALEXS) to determine the appropriate college level courses to place students. Students are encouraged to reach proficiency levels to avoid taking remedial core classes at the community college level. Test offerings are available by contacting any of the Kirkwood sties. Seal of Biliteracy Mid-Prairie is excited to offer the opportunity for graduating students that are interested to be awarded the Seal of Biliteracy. Students who have met eligibility requirements according to approved district assessments and demonstrate proficiency in two or more languages will be awarded the Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma or transcript.

Course Description: This course is designed

to help you grow as a writer. With your voice as the guide, you will create with words. The writing process will be the driving force, but as you grow as a writer, your flexibility and creativity will as well. You will also take a stab at poetry and read and analyze a novel of your choice.

Mystery Stories Grade Level: 10-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Prerequisites: English 9 Considerations: Elective course for any graduation option.

Course Description: This course is centered around the mystery genre. You will be exploring detective fiction by incorporating clues and foreshadowing while building suspense for your reader. Not only will you be producing your own mysteries, but also, you’ll be reading suspenseful stories by famous authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Agatha

Because the yearbook is a year long activity, students will need to work throughout the year to meet deadlines. This work will be done either outside of class at home, or during WIN time. If taken as a class, students can receive an English credit, but if done outside of class as part of the club, there is no credit available, but students will be able to help create the yearbook.

Course Description: Students in this course/club will be creating the school yearbook as well as selling ads and working on

Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Course Description: This course works through the first half of the Algebra curriculum with a focus on the application of the concepts. Topics include: operations with real numbers, linear equations and inequalities and relations and functions.

Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Course Description: Algebra provides a formal development of the algebraic skills and concepts necessary to succeed in advanced courses. In particular, this course teaches the use of algebraic skills in a wide range of problem-solving situations. The concept of function is emphasized throughout the course.

Topics include: (1) operations with real numbers, (2) linear equations and inequalities, (3) relations and functions, (4) polynomials, (5) algebraic fractions, and (6) nonlinear equations.

Music

Instrumental Music (Band) Grade Level: 9 - 12 Credits: .25/semester Length: All Year Prerequisite: Middle School Band Considerations: Learning to play a musical instrument successfully takes several years of focused effort. It helps to have a few years of experience playing a musical instrument and being able to read music when you join the Mid-Prairie High School band program. If you don’t have experience playing an instrument, you are still welcomed into the band program.

Course Description: The MPHS band season starts with marching band. The Golden Hawk marching band has five days of band camp in August before school starts. When the school year begins, the band rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday and most Friday mornings at 7:00 am. The marching band performs at all home football games, the homecoming pep rally, Kalona Fall Festival and our Stadium Echoes concert. The marching band typically competes at two marching band competitions: the Wilton Festival of Bands and State Marching Band

Contest. Both of these events take place on Saturdays in October.

As soon as marching band season is over, we begin concert band and jazz band rehearsals. All students enrolled in the band program participate in marching band and concert band. Jazz band is an extra curricular ensemble that rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from late October to early May. Enrollment in the MPHS band program is required for membership in the jazz band.

The MPHS pep band typically performs at 8 to 10 home basketball and wrestling meets during the winter season. All students enrolled in the band program are required to be in the pep band.

Students enrolled in the MPHS band program also have opportunity to perform in the River Valley Conference Honor Band, State Solo/Ensemble Contest, and the pit orchestra for the annual school musical in the spring.

Music Theory Grade Level: 9 - 12 Credits: .25/semester Length: One, two or three semesters starting after marching band season Considerations: Music theory is offered for any student who wants to learn more about the subject of music. You do not need to have studied or played music to enroll in this class.

Course Description: Music Theory at MPHS uses Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory as the course of study. There are three levels of the method study of jazz theory if you chose. During the course there are written tests at the end of each unit of study and a small

Course Description: The Mid-Prairie Mixed Choir is comprised of freshmen through seniors, and typically has an enrollment of around 70 students. Basics of music theory are taught throughout the year. It is of great benefit to all the members of the choir for everyone to study these basics both in and out of the classroom.

Mixed Choir is a non-auditioned choir which meets for the entire year. Students in Mixed Choir perform at the Fall Festival in Kalona, a Madrigal Dinner, Carols for Kindness, Pops & Pie, a 6-12 grade choir concert in May, and at the graduation ceremony. Students are expected to be at all performances, and must remain in good academic standing and not violate the Good Conduct Policy to be eligible to perform.

The Madrigal Dinner is the most intense performance of the year, with a 3+hour performance during the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of December.

performance during the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of December.

Ladies Lyrica also participates in the Iowa Music Association State Large Group Contest every year.

Extra Opportunities:

Besides performing in the large groups, students are able to perform in solos and small ensembles throughout the course of the year. These solos/small ensembles can be performed during two of our concerts: Carols for Kindness and Pops & Pie. Additionally, students can participate in the Iowa Solo & Small Ensemble Contest. Students are judged according to state guidelines during this event. It is a great learning opportunity, and a large percentage of both the choir and band students participate in this contest.

Madrigal Choir

(open to any grade student, either in Mixed Choir or Ladies’ Lyrica; meets outside the school day) The Mid-Prairie Madrigal Choir is the top select, auditioned choir at Mid-Prairie. Any student enrolled in either Mixed Choir or Ladies’ Lyrica is eligible. It typically has 16 students in it, and is open to any grade student. Auditions are held in the first month of school, and once selected, the students in this choir practice an hour before the school day starts at least twice a week. Students in this choir are expected to go above and beyond, in practicing their music and exhibiting leadership qualities. The major culmination of being in the Madrigal Choir is to be a member of the Royal Court during the Madrigal Dinner (see above under Mixed Choir description). This group also performs at various community events throughout the holiday season, as well as the State Solo & Small Ensemble contest later in the school year.

Course Description: This course is designed to teach the characteristics and traits of effective leaders. We will study such traits like respect, honesty, empathy, responsibility, courage, etc. through simulations and real world scenarios. There will be focus on reading, writing, public speaking and critical thinking. The curriculum is aligned with the National Common Core Standards for English. This will help students develop strong values, high standards, critical thinking skills, and improve reading comprehension.

Course Description: How College Works explores students' individual strengths, and life and vocational goals, as they identify a college program or major. Emphasizes using self-assessments to identify appropriate career areas, understanding the differences between high school and college expectations, taking and using placement tests for college admission, conducting college search and application, working through the FAFSA process, and managing personal finances to afford a college education. Provides an understanding of the career development process, and assists students in making satisfactory career choices. Includes self-assessment, career information research, decision making and job search strategies. Examines college study skills, including goal-setting, time management, note-taking and test taking strategies. Highlights aspects of personal responsibility such as self-advocacy, communicating with professors, social media awareness, physical and mental wellness, gender violence prevention, leadership and

student involvement.

Job Internship Grade Level: 11-12 Credits: .5 Class: 1 semester Course Description: Job Internships are available for any student in grades 1112. Students in Diploma Option 3 (Work Force) are required to complete 2-9 week

job internships in two separate locations working on two completely different skill sets. Students are required to complete 45 hours of on-the-job training during the term. Students will also have three scheduled meetings with staff of the Work Place Learning Connection throughout the term to discuss progress, concerns, areas for improvement, and to share success stories. Students are required to complete internship notebook that logs the hours for the term and get it signed by their supervisor. Internships are typically taken during blocks 1, 3 or 4. Students can work weekends or more than two hours per day, and are responsible for working out their schedule with their supervisor. Internships are treated just like a job and are taken instead of a class in most cases. Students are expected to dress accordingly, communicate daily with supervisors, do what they are asked to do, and complete the 45 hours within the semester.

Creating Opportunities for Employment (CORE) Grade Level: 11-12 Credits: .5 Class: Students can start the class at any time and the class is completed after all the requirements are met - Can also be completed over the Summer Prerequisites: Career Immersion Leadership and Assessment (CILA) (Can be taken concurrently) Course Description: CORE is available for any student in grades 11-12. For students in the Work Force Option CORE can be substituted for one (.5 credit) internship. All students must complete CILA prior or concurrently. All students are responsible for transportation and attaining

employment. Students are required to work 120 hours of paid employment. The hours can be accomplished through more than one employer but zero hours from any employer are counted until the student reaches 60 hours. Students are required to meet weekly with the Work Experience Coordinator at which time they will submit a Work Reflection. At the completion of the 120 hours students are required to write a reflection paper. A student can begin CORE at anytime (including summer) as long as they have employment and have either completed or are currently enrolled in CILA. CORE is completed after the completion of the 120 hours, completion of the weekly reflections and final paper. CORE is open to all students but can only be taken one time. Students are not released during the school day to complete CORE. How is CORE different from WLC Internship?

The main difference is WLC Internships focus on Career Exploration while CORE focuses on Job Skills development. Internships allow students to explore careers they will qualify for after more training. CORE allows students to develop basic Job Skills through paid employment.
