The History of The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of Western Australia
1901–2026
The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of Western Australia:
125 Years of Service The History of The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of Western Australia Since its formation in August 1901, The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of Western Australia has played an important role in supporting the plumbing industry and protecting the health and wellbeing of Western Australians. Established during a time when access to clean water and effective sanitation was becoming increasingly critical, the Association was founded to promote professionalism, quality workmanship, and industry standards across the State.
Over the past 125 years, the Association has evolved alongside Western Australia itself. From the early days of hand-crafted plumbing systems serving a growing colony, through periods of rapid development, technological innovation, regulatory change, and industry transformation, generations of Master Plumbers have helped build and maintain the essential infrastructure that communities rely upon every day.
This digital history book celebrates the people, projects, milestones, and achievements that have shaped the Association from 1901 to 2026. It is a tribute to the leadership, craftsmanship, dedication, and community spirit that have defined the organisation across more than a century of service.
The MPGA Digital History Book begins in 1993, marking the introduction of the Association’s Awards for Excellence, which commenced with the Apprentice Awards. Over the following years, the awards program expanded to include Business Awards, recognising the outstanding achievements, innovation, and professionalism of MPGA member businesses.
To explore the Association’s earlier history, from its establishment in 1901 through to the early 1990s, readers are encouraged to view the digital edition of the commemorative publication In Good Hands, available on our History page. Together, In Good Hands and the MPGA Digital History Book provide a comprehensive record of the Association’s evolution, milestones, and enduring commitment to supporting the plumbing and gasfitting industry in Western Australia.
The timeline that follows provides a journey through the Association’s rich history, highlighting key moments that have influenced not only the plumbing and gasfitting industry, but also the development of Western Australia. As we reflect on the past, we also recognise the responsibility and opportunity to continue building a strong future for the generations of plumbers and gasfitters who will follow.
We invite you to explore this remarkable story of resilience, progress, and industry excellence.
