Umpiring is more than just going out on a weekend andmakingdecisions.Itisaboutbuildingcharacter, overcoming adversity and dealing with a multitude ofsituations.Umpiresarealsoeverydaypeople–we are students, have careers, are parents and friends. As an Association, our role is to work with AFLSE Umpiring Department in the development of quality umpires, but as importantly, to help develop quality people. As a part of that, the Association organised thedeliveryofaMindfulnessAwarenesssession.
DeliveredbyDrPeterKing, fromEssentiaHealth, was a targeted session around dealing with the challenges of life and umpiring using mindfulness strategies. The last Wednesday in June brought all umpirestogetheratSouthernUmpireshomebasein Kananook. The session was attended by around 80 umpires – ranging from 14 to 60 years of age and including boundary, field and goal umpires and officials. Dr King was able to use examples and strategiesthatwererelatableforallinattendance.
DrKingpresentedtheideathatmindfulnessisabout payingattentiontothepresentmomentwhichiskey to quality umpiring. Dr King's insights into grounding, emotional regulation for optimal performance and The Wise Mind were great additions to the groups skills to take into the game andeverydaylife.DrKingspokeaboutbeingpresent in situations and being mindful of judgements. YCW put themselves in a position with a different lineup from the first quarter to review and work on combinationsasthefinalsseriesquicklyapproaches.
Emma Barfuss and Ash Whitnell in goals displayed the experienced and talented list this club has. The Bombers uitilised rolling substitutions and mad a number of changes throughout the first half in an attempt to stay with the Stonecats as YCW started the second half with a 12-goal advantage. Sam Silvester entered the game at GS and quickly made an impact for her side as the focal point for the midcourt players. The Stonecats continued to be seamless in their transition from one end to the other, along with great collaboration from all on court.TheBombersstruggledtofindanycontroland consistency in this match and will be disappointed with the 28-goal deficit. While being competitive most of the season and adding 6 wins to date, this black and red outfit know they have plenty more to work on to be competitive against the best in this Division.
The Bombers will welcome the week off to then face another high ranked team in Sorrento, and YCW will hostDromana.
Mt Eliza and Red Hill have a current position in the top 5 to date with only percentage separating the two sides, but every match will be important to win with just one third of the home and away season remaining.
Mt Eliza took the 4 goal win last time they met, so withanotherclosematchinstallanyadvantageina quarterwouldbepivotal.

A great win for the Hills which will give the players plenty of confidence going into their next game against Bonbeach, and Mt Eliza will head to Olympic ParkagainstRosebud.
Still searching for their first win of the season, Pines hostedSorrentoinanothertoughbattle. Sorrento had a number of debutants this week in JosieJamieson,SophieCadeandLaurieMeaker, who seamlessly fitting into the experienced A Grade side. The Sharks started the first quarter strong, pushing the intensity into the second quarter with a 21-goal lead at half time. The Pythons made a number of positional changes across the board heading into the second half, in an attempt to find combinations that were competitive to reduce the existing margin. Sorrento’s Talia Anderson was on fire in defence, whilst Alana De Wolde capitalised down the attack end on all turnovers. The Sharks finished the match with a 33-goal win. Another solid performance by all 10playerswhotookthecourt.
It won’t get any easier for Pines as the will head to Lloyd Park against Langwarrin after the break, and SorrentowillhosttheBombers.
Dromana were successful in their earlier clash against Rosebud. As the season has progressed the team has been inconsistent in their list, but remain positive after last weeks win. Rosebud will be eager nottoaddtheirfifthconsecutiveloss.
A match Rosebud was excited to tackle, they suddenlycametotherealisationtheyonlyhadfourA Grade players fit for this match. With half the team consisting of B Grade players who had just played a full match prior, the game was going to be tough. After the first 30 minutes of play, you could not separate these two teams as they both converted 18 goals. The wind unfortunately troubled both sides with passing and shooting accuracy, creating the low scoring battle. As the scoreboard continued to reflect the intensity of the match, Rosebud never exceeded more than a 3-goal margin. Rosebud will be looking forward to more players returning after the break to take on Mt Eliza, and Dromana will need to find something extra as they faceYCW.
Round 3 was the last time these teams met, leaving Langwarrin comfortable winners. But as Bonbeach arecomingintothismatchwiththeirsecondwinthe weekbefore, itcouldbeasatisfyingcontest.
Much of the first quarter was a close battle as Bonbeach was right with Langwarrin. AclosecontestbetweenCribPointandHastingslast timetheymetearlierintheseason, withtheMagpies taking the 4 points on that occasion. Both teams wouldbeeagertogetonthewinnersboardafterthis match.
Crib Point knew going into this contest Hastings would be slightly undermanned making this a more important to win. Coming out strong in the first quarter set the hosts up with an important 8 goal lead leaving the Blues in chase position. Hastings challenged in the second and third quarters and provided opportunities but couldn't quite convert enough to take the lead. Crib Point maintained a 4goal lead heading into the last 15 minutes. With a number of players helping out this Hastings side, they utilised the rolling substitutions for player management and in hopes to sneak the lead by the end. While the momentum may have been slightly with the visitors, the Magpies managed to hold on winning the last quarter to take a 6-goal win. Hastings best for the match was mid court player Casey Dunstan who stepped into goals for a quarter and managed to convert a couple, and Crib Point reiterate the importance of starting well in the first quarter.
The Magpies will look to have a better performance against Somerville following their Round 1 contest, and Hasting will have another tough week against Seaford.
In their previous battle, it was Tyabb who were easy winnersby24goals,butwiththecompetitivenetball and development this young Mornington side has shown to date there is no doubt there would be a differentresultinRound12.
Both teams went in with a limited side as rotations were slim. A very even first quarter as Tyabb took some time to steady against this up-and-coming Mornington side. The scoring workload was spread across all players, as it was Mornington who had the 2-goal advantage at quarter time. Keira Cenin took controlandleadershipinGAandassistedhersideto have an improved performance in the second quarter which gave the Yabbies the lead by 5 goals at the main break. Holly Hood who has always been animportantplayertotheDoggiesbutwentdownin the third quarter with a low calf/achilles injury and will be dramatically missed in the weeks to come. Praised most weeks by the accuracy of the visitors, Brittany Dickson scored 32 goals of 36 attempts and Candace Page with 12 goals and only 3 misses. But CharlotteSengstockfortheDoggieswashighlighted with 5 intercepts to her name. Mornington stayed with the Yabbies in the third quarter, but the experience in the hosts allowed them to increase theirleadasthefinalsirenwent.Tyabbcameoutas winners by 11 goals, keeping them in 5th position on the ladder by percentage. Thanks to Tyabb’s Keira Cenin who drove Holly to the hospital following the match.
Tyabb will have another important contest against Rye at RJ Rowley, and Mornington will compete againstKaringal.

Acrackingstartagainstamuchhigherplacedteam in Seaford saw Rye sitting with a 9-goal advantage after the first 15 minutes of play. Everyone was playing their role beautifully and goalers converted every opportunity following a trial of errors by the hosts.ThedefensivecombinationofSiennaWillsand Kelly Haynes were picking up plenty of ball and looked too tall against Seaford’s moving circle. Still three quarters of play left, Seaford were quick to display why they have been towards the top of the ladder all season and had the scores at 31 all at half time. Charlie Seivers was damaging in defence, frustrating Rye’s goalers and forcing them to miss some shots. Jess Tetley was particularly influential, playing in both GA and C she was creative in her movement and managed to construct some important turnovers. Myah Healey had a terrific outinginGS,astrongtargetunderthepostandshot accurately. Once Seaford took the lead, it seemed the Demons dropped their heads and things start to unravel, unable to deliver a four quarter performance. Injuries in the last quarter saw Rye having to move players out of position and the win wenttotheTigersby20goals.
Seaford will host Hastings, and Rye will need to get backtoplayingtheirbestagainstTyabbaseverywin fortheYabbieswillbeimportant.
As Chelsea came out winners by 15 last time they met, Pearcedale prove to be competitive this season and may acknowledge they should have a couple morewinstotheirnamethanwhattheyhave.
Plenty on the Panthers list to find the right combinations against each different opponent, the first starting seven had an important first quarter to take the lead by 3. Chelsea remained unchanged goingintothesecondquarterastheywereconfident theplayerscouldsettleandreducethesmallmargin. With another 15 minutes of play down, the hosts still heldthenarrowleadby2goals.Ithasbeenthethird quarter named as the most important, that if dominated by a side they would enter the last quarter with essential lead. A 12 goal to 8 third term to the advantage or Pearcedale, was enough when the final whistle came around. In this already close contest, Chelsea could not get enough of the momentum their way to steal the win and will be disappointed with the result. The top half of the ladder in this Division only gets more competitive as thefinalsseriesarealmostatreach.
Pearcedale will want to maintain a similar performanceagainstDevonMeadowsnextweek, and Chelsea will come up against Edi-Asp and not want torecordtheirthirdlossoutofthelastfourmatches.
