Hello everyone! Welcome to my first ever column in the Together & Locals and Rother Local paperzines. It’s an honour to be able to share my opinion and have a natter with such lovely readers. Can we just appreciate the lovely weather we’ve had lately? I’m really not a summer person at all, but having a bit of sunshine in the sky really does brighten your mood a bit. I remember a few years ago waiting in 37°c heat for a lift home after work one night, so I’m quite glad 25°c is the best we are getting! My recent job move means I no longer get public transport, which is a blessing for many reasons. I was once sat on the 218 Barnsley, heating on full blast and sweaty office workers either side of me; all while John the Weatherman graced my Twitter feed with ‘high UV levels today, folks’ and ‘make sure you have the sunscreen, it’s highs of 34°c!’. I mean come on, they can put the heating on in the summer, but in the winter you’re sat with 12 layers on and no heating in sight! A feeling I’m not used to, since most of my working life I was a bus......rider, is when you sit in a car that has been sat in the sun for a while. The moment you open that door and the air whooshes out, you could almost be mistaken for a ‘heat in the bag’ chicken that you
stick in the oven. I mean you might as well throw a tub of garlic sauce over your head and lay on the back seat to cook, right? So as you can probably assume, I’m not exactly the biggest fan of summer. I’ve been longing for the winter months since spring began! Nothing can take away the feeling of the hot sunshine, but I’d swap it for the spooky and festive seasons any day. See you soon! Georgina x

Barnsley is buzzing! I don’t know about you, but I have to say the Tarn centre is BOOMING at the minute! I was in the other day having a nosey, and the new market, library and some of the new independent shops and restaurants really took me by surprise! Have a wander in if you’ve not been in for a while or don’t go often. There’s summat for everyone in new market
(I bagged myself some reyt nice sweets, a new phone case and some trainers to make sure I look trendy for rest of summer) and I met one of my mates for some snap in that new Falco Lounge. It was cracking! I know there’s issues with Tarn - like anywhere else in the world - but things are getting better, and it’s great to see.
Library @ the Lightbox looks fab The new library is cracking, init? It’s the first completely new building as part of The Glass Works, and it really looks the part. There’s some unreal technology in there, it’s a proper community space and has been thought out really well. I love it. I think our council gets a lot of criticism, but it should be applauded
for investing in a new library at a time when many other towns and cities are shutting them down. It’s exciting times in the Tarn centre and I think we should be positive that there’s so much investment – when it could easily have faded away like other towns are starting to do.
Market Kitchen opens in Autumn We’re famous for our market in Barnsley – and it’s getting its own food court in a few months! Market Kitchen will bring independent food retailers into the upstairs of the market next to the three cafes (get yourself down for a brekkie from there, they all do cracking fry ups and pots of
tea, sets me up for the day!). So far, it’s been announced there’ll be a burger bar, ice cream parlour, Jamaican food offer and a new coffee shop. There will be more announced soon, and I can’t wait to find out more. Exciting times for the market!
Nando’s confirmed for Glass Works I have to say, when I found out Nando’s was coming to Tarn, I jumped for joy and nearly banged my head on ceiling I was that excited. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s definitely gonna attract more shoppers into Tarn, especially the young uns, which can’t be a bad thing cos they’re the shoppers of the future. They don’t half bang on about Nando’s, so it’s nice to see they’ll be catered for. I love a Nando’s mysen so it means I
don’t have to drive to Wakey or Sheff anymore if I want my chicken fix, which isn’t a bad thing. I’d much rather be driving 10 minutes darn road than getting on train or getting stuck in traffic near Meadowhall! Whether you like a bit of peri-peri chicken or not, plenty do and it will bring folk in who maybe haven’t been into the town centre before or at least in a long time. It can only be a good thing, in my opinion.
Have you seen the Dancing Town event going off in Tarn? It looks fantastic. It takes place over 10 days in Mandela Gardens at the side of The Civic in a huge marquee. There’s loads of free workshops, masterclasses and special events. Read all about it in this month’s Together and Local.
It was the first one last year – I went to the 80s night and it was buzzing! Really good atmosphere and something different for the town centre. This year, they’ve got George Sampson who won Britain’s Got Talent coming. I’ll have him a dance off after a couple of pints if he’s up for the challenge!
Barnsley got off to a flyer in their first game of the season, didn’t they? Was nice to see them get one over Fulham, who are favourites to go up. It’s gonna be a long, hard season for the Reds, who’ve got some tricky games in the pipeline. Let’s be honest, being in The Championship a big step up from the standard of football last year – so every game’s gonna be
difficult. But if we get behind them, make Oakwell a fortress and give them our backing away from home, I’m sure the Reds can not only stay up, but have a good season and finish in the top half. Hi everyone! Rose your beauty editor and the founder of local ethical lip care brand Pura Cosmetics here! I’m back this month to talk all things holiday skin and beauty essentials as it’s the height of the summer. Our paperzines with All Saints Academy All Saints Academy (YEAR 6) took part in a topic that involved them creating their own magazine all of them looked outstanding. All Saints Academy is a primary/nursery of the most prestigious proportions filled with top teachers and amazing facilities like a school field, a large playground field with space for any child in the school to enjoy. The school has many kind children and rarely come across rebellious behaviour. Recently, the Year 6 class took part in a project of making mini magazines to see what it is like to be a magazine writer and snippets of their creations.
“On Wednesday 3rd of July 2019, Mike and Georgina taught us how to create magazines. Our magazines were made by groups of two or three we could do them on a subject or do a local magazine. Some groups did football, some did food and more… we really enjoyed it.”

As the Great British Bake Off approaches, I am reminded of how bad a baker I am. It doesn’t matter how closely I follow the recipe, how extraordinarily careful I am about whisking and folding and temperatures At school I only ever got detention in one class, yes you guessed it, cookery. I had followed the recipe for my Victoria Sponge cake to a tee, it was all going well. I looked into the oven as my timer went off, and I was pleased to be greeted with a golden, risen sponge. I popped on my oven gloves, took the cake out of the oven, put it on the side and went to talk to my friend. Little did I know, things that have
come straight out of the oven should not be put directly onto the brand-new laminated work top at school without a cover. I was put in detention for melting the kitchen. That’s not the only time my baking has got me into trouble. I have ruined birthdays by thinking I could create a masterpiece, when in actual fact all I can make is a mess. Last year I made a cake for my dad’s birthday and out of politeness he ate the whole thing. Two weeks later he said it was only edible with four large tins of custard poured over it.

I have to say as the years have gone on, the baking of biscuits has improved ever so slightly and my favourite (easypeasy Ms Hughes approved) recipe is shortbread men. Now I never quite mastered ginger-
2. Sift flour into a bowl with the sugar. Chop the butter into cubes and then add to the other ingredients. 3. Rub the butter into the flour and sugar with your finger tips. When the dough begin to form shape, add a few drops of vanilla extract. 4. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface and use cutter to cut out men shapes. Alternatively, you can cut the dough into rectangular shapes using a sharp knife (but that’s boring!) 5. Place on the baking sheet and bake for 15-20mins. When golden (not charcoal), remove from the oven and leave to cool on a cooling rack (This part is very important - not directly onto worktops) 6. Decorate with icing! Enjoy, and remember to switch off your ovens.

Media students are top of the league Barnsley College Creative Media Production students Matty Hugill, Kyle Walker and Karl Wellbelove have come out on top at the Young Audio and Radio Industry Awards (Young ARIAs), winning the Best in Sport category for their football show on online radio station, The Vibe. The students travelled to London on to attend the Young ARIAs ceremony at the BBC Radio Theatre, where they beat two other shortlisted sport radio shows to the title of Best in Sport. The prestigious event was hosted by Matt Edmondson and Kiss FM’s Daisy Maskell with the awards presented by big names in the radio industry including Mollie King, Sara Cox, Richie Anderson and Jack Pepper. The three College students run their own radio show, Everything Football, outside of their studies, with the weekly show dissecting the upcoming football fixtures, delving deep into the latest rumours and debates and discussing tough topics in the world of football.
Lee Barber, Barnsley College Media Teacher and Station Manager for The Vibe, suggested that the students enter the Young ARIAs for the work they have done on the show and their coverage of hard hitting subject matter such as sexism and racism in football. Lee said: “This is a brilliant achievement for the lads and brilliant news for The Vibe in general. To have an award-winning show on our schedule this early on is fantastic. The three students should be very proud of themselves. The much anticipated re-opening of the Jolly Tap on the Arcade, formally Arcade Ale House happened on 4th July. The well regarded micro pub has become a regular watering hole for real ale enthusiasts and social drinkers alike. The pub has showcased locally made real and craft ale for a number of years. Both independent business and real ale lovers have reason to celebrate. “We are a Barnsley brewery, we love beer and we love Barnsley. So it made perfect sense to open an authentic brewery tap in town as our next step” said Brewery manager Paul Mann. “Our real ale is brewed less than two miles from the pub and leaves the brewery
in perfect condition. We use premium malted barley from Castleford, a traditional Maltster from within Yorkshire. Promoting jobs within the region. A kind-hearted member of the public joined forces with BPL to raise money for charity Simeon Evershed, of Meadowview, Lundwood, reached out to the team at Your Space Metrodome after promising to raise money for Barnsley Hospice last year in Barnsley chronicle. Your Space Metrodome hosted a variety of events on Saturday 9th July, including a spin-a-thon, a party for members and a raffle. Prizes for the raffle included free personal training sessions, a night stay at St Pierre Hotel and a signed Barnsley FC football shirt. Collectively, Simeon and Your Space Metrodome raised over £750 for Barnsley Hospice in just one day. Barnsley Hospice is a charity which provides care to hundreds of people across Barnsley every year. They provide specialist palliative care, help and support to people with life-limiting illnesses such as Cancer and Parkinson’s. Simon Atkinson, Corporate Fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, was presented with a cheque from Simeon and Your Space Metrodome. He said: “I’m absolutely flabbergasted! Simeon, Your Space Metrodome and their members have doubled the amount that we expected. We can’t thank them enough!
“Simeon’s enthusiasm is infectious and the team at Your Space Metrodome and the members are amazing! “Barnsley Hospice is close to everyone’s hearts - this shows that it can bring the community together and help people at the same time!” Simeon appeared in Barnsley Chronicle last year after winning a free gym membership for six months, in three consecutive gym challenges. After beating over 100 people in each challenge, Simeon generously traded the memberships into money and donated it all to Barnsley Hospice. The success of this event has encouraged Simeon to continue to fundraise for charity. He said: “I committed myself to raising money for Barnsley Hospice last year because it’s an amazing charity that helps so many people. “I’m very pleased with the fundraising. I wanted to raise a good amount for this great cause and we definitely achieved it! “I’m open to other fundraising events in the future, perhaps Weston Park Cancer Charity or Cancer Research.” Mike Cutts, Manager of Your Space Metrodome, said: “We’re proud to have members like Simeon, who has
been with us for a long time. He’s been instrumental to the success of this event. “Your Space Metrodome is the friend-

Barnsley Market has formed an integral part of the town’s life for centuries. Though the market has changed appearance and location many times one thing has always remained consistent; the people. Many locals will have fond memories of the traders and characters who frequented the market over the years. One of those well-known characters was amateur photographer Harry Brookes. Over a period of five decades, Harry documented the changing face of the market, its traders and the shoppers. His love of the market community and interest in local history led Harry to take over 1000 photographs, many of which were donated to Barnsley Archives. This exhibition displays a selection of Harry’s pictures which span a six year period of 1982 – 1987.

Get on your dancing shoes, Barnsley, because Dancing Town is back in Mandela Gardens this August. George Sampson – winner of Britain’s Got Talent and star of Street Dance 2 – will host workshops crowds as part of the 10 day dance extravaganza, back for its second instalment after launching last year. Alongside George’s street dance workshops, free sessions hosted by industry professionals will focus on ballroom, swing, cheerleading and contemporary styles of dance plus much more. In the evenings, a night of Northern Soul will once again be hosted on the Mandela Gardens dancefloor alongside an 80s night and 90s chart night. Those events will be complemented by two performance evenings, where local dance schools will showcase their dancing skills in front of hundreds of people. The event will culminate on Sunday 18 August with Strictly Sunday and a Salsa Social, where event-goers will be able to learn to dance like their favourite TV dancers and get their Latin on with professional instructors. Supporting venues include Library @ the Lightbox, which will also host workshops as part of the festival while events will also take place in Barnsley Market’s atrium. Celebrating the life of Rosalyn Wicks 25 years on ...
Rosalyn dedicated her life to the world of dance, holding Fellowships of the International Dance Teachers Association also known as the IDTA. She was an examiner, lecturer and adjudicator as well as teaching both children and professionals. To reach their full potential students were given specialist training in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, gymnastics and drama at her Dance Academy. She co-coordinated the Miss Dance of Great Britain held at City Hall Sheffield for many years, now held in Winter Gardens Blackpool. A bursary in her memory is now awarded annually and presented by her family. A true professional in all aspects Miss Wicks inspired hundreds of students progressing their talent and excellence in their careers. Many continued to perform professionally throughout the world.
Rosalyn organised and choreographed hundreds of productions. All showcasing the discipline of dance and stimulating their love of theatrical excellence. Throughout the years she raised funds for several charities. Many were held at the Civic Hall in Barnsley, amongst many other venues. Barnsley born and bred a true friend and colleague, a very special lady. The Mystery of Felkirk St Peter’s
A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a lady who told me she was on a committee to raise awareness of Felkirk St. Peter Church. I was strangely intrigued by the message she left so decided to call her back. She explained 2020 is the 900th year celebration of the Church and would I like to visit to learn more? I told her I had never heard of the Church or Felkirk which seemed to amuse her. I asked for directions and she gave me a pretty straightforward instruction. To cut a long story short, I followed her directions and was literally astounded that I had found the place as I had been looking on a road map for Felkirk but couldn’t find it. I had never noticed the historical walls, buildings and fields that surround Felkirk which actually is situated on the borders of South Hiendley and Shafton and a gnats cough from Hemsworth! My first question was….’Where is Felkirk?’ ‘Aha!’ the small group of volunteers
exclaimed, ‘You’re standing in it!’ They went on to explain that ‘Felkirk’ as a village or town is something of a mystery with some local folk claiming it doesn’t and never did exist and others who are quite certain it did! There are also numerous theories regarding the name Felkirk. The name is possibly derived from what is believed to be either a Scandinavian name ‘Fjolkirche’ which roughly translates as ‘Church made of wood or planks’ or an Anglo-Saxon name ‘Feldkirche’ which translates as ‘Church of the Field’. Does anyone really know? Therefore, Felkirk St. Peter is one of only a handful of Parishes in the UK named after a Church name rather than a village. I was further astounded to learn that an ancient village of Hodroyd, (Hoderoyd), existed around Felkirk in the 11th Century and all the land and surrounding villages including South Hiendley, Cold Hiendley, Havercroft, Ryhill, Brierley, Shafton and Grimethorpe
were in the parish of Felkirk and it came under the patronage and control of Nostell Priory in the early 12th century, however it would mean the Church was in existence long before it came under the patronage of Nostell. I felt so welcomed by this small, friendly group of people that I got totally immersed in the enthusiasm for 2020. In fact, I was that immersed in the atmosphere and history I completely forgot to take notes towards the end! But all is not lost! I am returning for a guided tour of South Hiendley and the ancient village of Hodroyd soon and to
be honest, I cannot wait to report back to you in the September issue! Having a garden filled with flowers, fragrance and finesse doesn’t have to cost the earth, but it does take time and patience. I have watched Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Garden thousands of times and been thoroughly inspired with how the team transforms the bland gardens into something wonderful in 24 hours, but have you ever noticed how they don’t mention the price. It wouldn’t take too much work with a few pairs of hands and an endless stream of cash to create that in your back garden, but what if money is tight? My garden is fairly sizeable and I have lived in this house for nine years. This year I am thrilled with how the garden looks and I’m proud that I’ve done it on a shoe string budget. Every single plant in my garden apart from my flamingo tree has started as a tiny cutting. After visiting friends and family’s houses I’ve looked at what plants were thriving and asked if I could have a cutting for my house. My garden is now an oasis of plants and flowers perfect for the ever-changing British weather. I have a corner that is purely dedicated to the many birds that visit. I repurposed and old hanging seat frame that wasn’t looking its best. I bought bird feeders in the sale, ornaments from charity shops and used stones from my front garden. The corner is surrounded by Buddleia bushes which attract a wide range of insects, especially butterflies. This in turn attracts the birds. I also hung a mirror on my fence to give the illusion of a secret garden and dot tiny ornaments around to keep it interesting. This is perfect for those with children and grandchildren as it can become a treasure hunt. I installed a water feature when I first moved but it looked so bare. I decided to give it some life by planting a range
of grasses, although the birds like to make sure the grasses grow all around my garden by dropping the seeds. The far corner of my garden, which gets the most sun, has been made into my vegetable patch. I repurposed some old decking and painted it, and planted leeks, potatoes, onions and carrots. In the interest of honesty this was not my greatest idea as my dogs can jump into the patch, steal the potatoes and dig up the carrots. Again, it’s a working progress, I may have to put them on stilts! (The vegetables, not the dogs!) I have planted succulents into old broken pots and planted flowers in an old wash basket, there’s really nothing I won’t try. To keep on top of everything, I mow my grass weekly, and trim the plants back in September ready for the bad weather and the following year.
It’s still a working progress but I am enjoying working on it. There’s nothing more satisfying than looking out on to your garden and seeing how far you’ve come. It’s even better when you know you haven’t wasted thousands of pound on Mr Titchmarsh solutions!

Woodrow opens championship season facing former club
Fewer people than Cauley Woodrow will have been as excited when Fulham were confirmed as Barnsley’s opening day opponents for next season. Whilst the prospect of Championship football is enough to whet the appetite of Reds fans, for last season’s joint top-scorer, facing his former employers for the curtain-raiser couldn’t have made for a more perfect opening to the new campaign. “Obviously on a personal note, it’s something I’ve joked about with family,” laughed Woodrow. “I said we’d get Fulham for the first game of the season. When I woke up and saw the fixtures, that was the case. It’s obviously exciting and I’m looking forward to the game and the start of the season. “I was at Fulham for a long time,” he added. “I enjoyed my time there and the club’s got a special place in my heart but, at the same time, it’s going to be a tough game and Fulham have just come out of the Premier League. They’ve got some really good players so it’s going to be a tough start for us. “They gave me my chance to play at the highest level when I first broke through. They gave me my opportunity which is all you can ask for as a player.” Woodrow netted 12 goals in 67 appearances - the majority of which came from the bench - for the Cottagers across eight years. In that time he also spent spells out on loan with Southend, Burton and Bristol City before his arrival at Oakwell. Whilst he may have developed his instinct for goals at Craven Cottage, it’s with the Reds that he has truly flourished. Of his 19 strikes last term, 14 of them were despatched without taking a first touch (penalties excluded) - the sign of a true sharp-shooter. Now, when August 3rd arrives, Woodrow’s friendships will be put to one side. Barnsley’s number nine is still in touch with the likes of Tom Cairney, Marcus Bettinelli and even the boss, Scott Parker. “There’s a lot of players there that I’m still really close with. I know the staff and manager there really well. It’s going to be exciting to see them all. “He (Scott Parker) got the job at the back-end of last season and did well. He’s managed to get the full-time role and I hope he can do well for Fulham and shows what he’s about. He’s had a fantastic career and with his knowledge in the game, I’m sure he’ll be a fantastic manager as well. “You sort of go away for a holiday and forget about everything but when the fixtures come out it’s really exciting. The season’s just around the corner and
I want to get fit and focus on the season. It’s going to be hard in the Championship with some really good teams and really good players.” For some of Barnsley’s squad, the Championship is a step into the unknown. Whilst the 24-year-old has been there before, he’s much better prepared this time around. “I feel in a good place,” he continued. “Last season was a really good experience for me and I think that helped massively in my progression, growing into more of a man. Before I was new to the Championship and new to men’s football, now I know what it’s all about and I’ll know what to expect. “I didn’t really realise I was given a leadership role, I didn’t do it consciously. I was trying to help people off the pitch but all the lads in general were really good. “We get given off-season programmes to stay fit but, me personally,
I always stay fit in the summer. It is important to have a bit of rest as well but I think we’re all pretty fit lads now and it’s just about getting your sharpness back and when you go in for pre-season it’s about getting into the swing of things.” It’s also refreshing to hear an assurance from the striker that the Reds will also be aiming to maintain their exciting, attacking style of play in England’s second tier. “The manager (Daniel Stendel) at Barnsley has been clear to us about what he wants since he came in and I don’t think that’ll change too much next season,” added Woodrow. “We’ve lost a couple of players and signed some, there’ll be a few fresh faces which will be good to strengthen the squad. But we won’t be changing our foundation from last season. We’ll try and play the same way as we did.”
Hello and welcome to this month’s football page in Together & Local. In my last column, I hinted at throwing in my two-penneth on the current VAR debacle (debacle being the operative word!) - so here goes… Technology should be there to assist and assist only. Welcoming goal-line technology has been the greatest development in the game since referees were allowed to ditch the three-piece suit (seriously, google 1900’s football!). Whilst we can determine facts i.e. a ball crossing the line, that is where technology serves us best. However, VAR still leaves decisions open to interpretation. Handballs, fouls, offsides and encroachment have all been subject to intense scrutiny through this summer’s women’s World Cup and UEFA Nation’s League and some decisions are still being discussed! Let’s leave it as a last resort, not a crutch. Personally, I think it needs more time as the VAR technology is in its infancy. Perhaps there could be a limited ‘appeal’ system like in tennis or cricket? Whatever happens, I hope the relevant authorities aren’t afraid to hold their hands up and rid the game completely of VAR and say ‘At least we tried!’. As for more local matters and all things Barnsley FC, the club have already been active in recruiting winger Luke Thomas from Derby County, goalkeeper Brad Collins from Chelsea and Danish defender, Mads Andersen. It’s great seeing the club get their business done early, but at the time of writing it appears they may well have been ‘replacements’ rather than simply ‘additions’, as I anticipate the departures of Adam Davies and Liam Lindsay. I look forward to next month where pre-season will be complete and the season upon us!
