Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a lovely festive season and you're taking on this year with all your might.

A lot of you are using January as a starting point for a challenge, Dry January and Veganuary amongst the most popular. I've started training in something I've been interested in for a while. I used some Christmas money to browse through the sales and invested in a lash extension training kit. That's right...I've stepped into the world of the Facebook statuses that read 'I need models this Thursday' and 'New set from today, inbox to book'. A lot of people are doing beauty courses and working in salons these days, but I like to think with my absolutely cracking sense of humour (Oi, no need for that language!) and my patience, it's something I will succeed in. Of course, it won't stop me from doing this fantastic job, it would just be something on the side.

So, look out for those statuses on my feed!

Something else that needs mentioning is how fast kids are growing up these days! I've touched on this in my column before, with kids having phones and social media. But can you believe what my baby niece asked me? If she can be a model for my lash training! Ok, she's 13...but still! Next thing you know she'll have 3 metre long hair extensions, 12 inch long nails and 4 gin bottles as birthday gifts.

When I was 13, I started wearing a bit of mascara, went to town shopping with a group of my friends and had Justin Bieber on my birthday cake!

Society is not influential at all, painting the wrong picture to

young children and teenagers with an expectation of who they need to be. It's the same for young adults, with lip fillers, waist trainers and designer brands being the current 'thing'. I'm not Prime Minister (unfortunately) and I don't have a magic fairy wand (again, unfortunately) but I can say one thing. If you have a young child or teen, even an adult child, who doesn't want to read a large paragraph about 'loving themself' and 'self acceptance' and 'positive vibes', tell them to read this one word... be-you-tiful. You is the best you that you can be....you? I've took it too far with the you's, now we're onto creepy Netflix series.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing you all again in the next issue. I hope you enjoy this bumper issue too!

Young Mayor Alyssa wins prestigious award

accessible for residents in a simpler layout and format.

A number of focus groups were asked to provide comments on the design to make sure that the changes made were suitable and met the needs of as many people as possible.

Residents can now view the new calendar on Barnsley Council’s website at barnsley.gov.uk/waste or head down to their local library where staff are available to offer support accessing the calendar online.

The five week closure will allow essential and major construction work to take place, which will see heavy machinery in the parklands and electrical work conducted making it dangerous for people to use.

Cannon Hall Farm, the neighbouring attraction, is open for business as usual and to support the project has allocated extra parking for visitors to use during the closure. Visitors can access the farm by using the main road, which is clearly marked with signage.

Prosecutions for blue badge misuse

Barnsley’s Young Mayor – Alyssa Butler – is celebrating after scooping a prestigious gong.

Alyssa was awarded the Young Campaigner of the Year award by the British Youth Council earlier last month at the Local Youth Voice Star Awards.

The Local Youth Voice Star Awards recognise, celebrate and showcase the breadth and diversity of local work within the British Youth Council’s Youth Voice Programme.

Cannon Hall, park and gardens closes as transformational changes take place

Barnsley Council has secured its first two prosecutions as it cracks down on blue badge misuse in the area.

Andrew Heath Wyatt, aged 54, from Hemingfield, pleaded guilty to fraudulently using a blue badge when he appeared at Barnsley Magistrates Court on Monday 20 January. The court heard that Mr Wyatt altered his deceased father’s expired blue badge to make it appear valid and in date. He had displayed the badge to avoid parking charges when parking in the town centre.

Charges were brought under the Fraud Act 2006 and the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984. The Magistrates said that this was outright abuse of the scheme and that blue badges should only be used by people who need them.

As well as Alyssa, two more Barnsley Youth Council members were nominated for awards.

Daniel James, Barnsley Youth Council and SEND Forum member and Norwin Tabassum, Barnsley Youth Council member and Member of Youth Parliament for Barnsley were also nominated for their work.

They received certificates of commendation.

New bin calendars available New bin calendars for 2020 are available to download and print.

After a review of the 2019 timetable, the 2020 calendars have been redesigned to be more

Cannon Hall Museum - along with its park and gardens - is closed until mid-February as part a £3 million project.

The project – funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and its players - will see the historic parklands returned to their former Georgian splendour.

Due to the transformational nature of the work,the museum and outdoor space - including the car park will be temporarily shut, due to reopen again in midFebruary.

Mr Wyatt was fined £500 for his fraudulent act and was ordered to pay additional costs of £641.55 and a £50 victim’s surcharge.

Another prosecution against Emma Louise Moss, aged 35, of Royston was also heard by Magistrates.

Moss had pleaded guilty by letter in advance of the hearing, to an offence of using her disabled daughter’s blue badge to park when her daughter wasn’t present, contrary to the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984.

Ms Moss was fined £146 and was also ordered to pay £100 towards costs, and a victim’s surcharge of £32.

Adapted from the award-winning picture book by Chris Haughton, this brand new show for 3-7 year olds and their families uses acrobatics, slapstick comedy and live music to bring George’s chaotic and joyful escapades to life.

Oh No, George! has been commissioned by ARC Stockton and The Civic, Barnsley. The show is created by Can’t Sit Still, a Bristol based circus theatre company that tells stories, starts conversations and changes the world. Oh No, George! follows the success of Plink and Boo which toured to theatres and libraries in 2018 and 2019, playing to over 2000 people.

The Second World War – Barnsley’s Story Experience Barnsley On now – Saturday 21 March 2020 From 1939 to 1945 Barnsley was deeply affected by the impact of war.

The mines provided fuel, factories made equipment and munitions, people lived with blackouts, air raids and the rationing of everyday essentials.

time, money and in some cases their lives to support the war effort. This exhibition looks at life across the borough in wartime, the sacrifices people made and their courage in adversity, through objects, images and archives reflecting their stories.

Pushing Paper: Contemporary Drawing from 1970 until now Cooper Gallery 9 December – March 2021 For the first time, the British Museum has co-curated an exhibition with partner museums from around the UK to display and then tour contemporary artworks from its Prints and Drawings collection.

Pushing paper: contemporary drawing from 1970 to now will illustrate how artists experiment with the power of paper to express their ideas, pushing the medium in new directions. It will highlight the breadth and quality of the Museum’s collection of modern art, as well as its global scope.

The exhibition of 56 works will showcase the astonishing diversity of contemporary drawing over the last fifty years. It will begin at the British Museum and then travel on to partner museums as part of the Museum’s National Programmes, allowing more people around the UK the opportunity to see British Museum objects outside of London.

The Cooper Gallery is one of only three galleries in the UK that will host the exhibition and the only one in Yorkshire where you can see the magnificent work.

Tour de Yorkshire races back into town

More new food and drink places in town centre I don’t know about you, but I had a reyt good Christmas. I’m not joking – I’ve never eaten as much in my life. I smashed my roast tatie record on my dinner, scoffed tin after tin of Cadbury’s Heroes and ate my bodyweight in pigs in blankets.

I ate like a king.

So it’s no good for my waistline that Tarn centre has welcomed more food and drink places.

Market Kitchen was absolutely buzzing with places to eat as it was – and na there’s two more vendors. And they’re belting.

I’d never had rotisserie duck in my life until I tried new place Quack – and I can’t get enough of it. Shredded duck on top of duck fat chips? Dunt mind if I do!

And is there any better food in life than pizza? It’s the king of food. And you can get it at Market Kitchen now, too, thanks to Breeze Bros Pizza Co. They do allsorts including create your own. Finer pizza in Tarn you will never find.

Meanwhile, up on Arcade, an Italian dessert parlour has opened

its doors. Further round the corner on Market Hill – you’ll find a new cocktail bar, Hill 16.

It’s all great news for Tarn centre and more proof that it’s becoming one of the best places to visit in Yorkshire. I love my town and it’s unbelievable to see all these new places opening. Makes me reyt proud and brings a tear to my eye!

Town awarded Purple Flag status What’s Purple Flag? I said exactly same thing when I found out our Tarn centre had been Purple Flag accredited.

But then I did some digging – and actually, it’s a reyt accolade for Barnsley!

Purple Flag has only been awarded to four towns/cities in Yorkshire – and Tarn is one of them. So that’s an achievement in itself.

It’s awarded to towns/cities that offer an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out. That’s not always been the case in the past – but if owt, we’ve never been short of entertainment with some of folk I’ve seen on Wellington Street at 3am on a Sunday morning!

But in all seriousness, I had a few drinks out with my mates over Christmas and I have to say,

Barnsley has completely transformed.

When I first started going out about 10 years ago, Tarn was mint.

It was a proper destination – and people would come from all over for a night in Barnsley.

But it quickly lost that sparkle.

Places started to shut and gradually, it became a bit of a laughing stock and gained a bad reputation.

But over the last two years, there’s been a change. And Tarn is a place we can be proud of again. There’s loads of new places to eat and drink.

Classier places that attract a nice crowd. And, there’s loads to do, with live music and events happening all the time.

If you’ve not been in town for a while, I’d recommend trying it again.

It will take you be surprise.

Fantastic news – Barnsley will host the Tour de Yorkshire for the third year running this year!

And if you’ve missed it in the past – don’t worry. Because this year, it’s on a Saturday!

Barnsley hosted the race on Fridays in 2018 and 2019, but this year’s Saturday start will give you plenty of opportunity to get out and support the riders.

Barnsley will host the start of

stage three of the men’s race and stage two of the women’s race on Saturday 2 May. If you’ve been before, you’ll know it’s always a great day out for all the family. There will be plenty to see and do in the town centre, and Barnsley is famed for giving the riders a warm Yorkshire welcome on race day.

Exciting times!

The Civic set for major renovation It’s all happening in Barnsley – news broke in late January that The Civic will undergo a massive £7m renovation!

The work will see new events spaces including a 150-seat studio, a new box office, bar area and even some private apartments for residential use.

I’ve been to a few events at The Civic and have to say – it’s a great venue and hosts some fantastic shows.

This work will really help it fit into

the future plans for the town centre and restore it as the go to arts centre in Tarn.

Beneath the soil, the bulbs are growing, inside the branches, little sparks of life are pushing against the bark, and I'm sure my roses are desperate to burst forth. I am so impatient, I want shoots and buds and leaves. Mother Nature does an amazing job each Spring, turning dead looking trees into shimmering masses of the most beautiful greens, hatching the bulbs that resemble dinosaur poo to create amazing colours and shapes that man could never recreate. And most of all from microscopic seeds that produce so much splendour it's unbelievable!

She's one clever woman. I feel rather guilty thinking of all the magical transformations that will appear (when I can't even remove one treesee December issue!). Stamping my feet like a spoilt child- I want colour! -miracles take a little while, and that's what each piece of flora is. Who am I to throw shade at Mother Nature? She makes beauty, perfection and aromas that no earthly hands can! So, to qwell my impatience I got lights! Solar-powered stars, lamps and a beautiful moon gifted by my daughter. (I'm such a 'look at the moon' person) Now, a memory just popped into my head- as a small child, outdoor lights didnt exist. Until, my mum stubbed her toe on a hedgehog! They say necessity is the greatest form of invention, hence, once empty and cleaned bean can with a bulb and a little electricity and Presto! An outside light to prevent my mother from the wildlife! Which brings me nicely to talk about the birds. All Winter a little robin has graced our garden, singing loudly aloft our weeping willow.

Then there are the blue-tit pairs that dart about every morning, performing acrobatics to reach the coconut shell on the washing line. Occasionally, the graceful heron slowly glides past on it's way down the river. Let us not forget the die-hard sparrows, come rain or shine, frost or fog they return. Maybe not the most colourful or the sweetest singers but you can't beat their resilience. Now, here's a confusing little note, I sit here looking at my garden and what do I see?

Buds on my magnolia, that's what I need to lift the mood! Wait, do I see some little green shoots poking out beneath the trees? Snowdrops rearing their heads! Ahh, small pleasures. A sure sign that life goes on, and Mother Nature works her miracles again, year after year, from tiny acorns, mighty oaks can grow. This year brings some celebrations for us, many momentous birthdays!

So, I need to get my thinking cap on to find plants to commemorate them. Maybe as gifts, but more likely as gifts to myself to place in my garden to appreciate for years to come. If you can recommend anything as a momento for a thirteenth, fortieth, sixtieth and sixteenth, please let me know. Happy Gardening!

Yummy Mummies are miles ahead with new community group Mother Runners is a new community group created for the many mums in Barnsley who find themselves exhausted, with no time to focus on themselves and perhaps struggling mentally as a result. Join us for a weekly dose of walking/jogging therapy, as you take the first steps on your running journey on a flat path in Darton.

This is an informal group intended for social and recreational purposes rather than athletic training. There are no fees, no commitment your only commitment is to yourself, to make time for one hour to get fitter, faster and most importantly happier in 2020!

Each session starts with a 15 minute welcome, chat and warm up at our host facility Les Cadeaux. It's really important that you're here for this bit as we want to avoid injuries and get to know you! We'll then head off to the new flat path in Darton Park (daytime sessions) or out along the well lit Barnsley Road (evening sessions during winter).

Week by week we'll be following a modified version of the Couch to 5K plan, which is designed for people who have no running experience. The 30 minutes we spend on the run will be a very slow paced 'walk a bit, run a bit', gradually increasing the seconds spent running each week.

At the end of our run we'll return back for a cool down, drink of water and opportunity for post-run chat! As we are an informal social group the main aim of what we are

doing is to improve mental wellbeing by increasing activity while meeting with like-minded mums.

To help encourage you to continue running outside of our sessions, you will also be introduced to two of the most popular Running Apps, Couch to 5K and Strava. They're really user friendly, easy to use and will help you maintain motivation!

The runs will work across a 10 week

structure leading to an optional 5K run at Nostell in April, however you're equally welcome to just come along week by week with no further commitment.

"I'm so excited to set up Mother Runners in Barnsley! It feels really strange to be writing this as just 8 months ago I was overweight, eating takeouts most nights and had never set foot on a 'run'. Last year I turned 40

and needed to make a positive change. My good friend Leyla, an exceptional runner (and also a mum) had always inspired me with her incredible medal collection of hundreds of runs right up to 60 miles.

Having seen her dedication to running while also having three children and a job, I started to think about doing something I thought I never would. I had a back injury, and when Googling how to relieve the pain I came across the NHS 'Couch to 5K' programme which promised being able to take you from zero running experience to running a 5K in 9 weeks. I was entirely sceptical, but downloaded the App, found my only pair of never worn £6 supermarket trainers and set off one evening in June.

Run leader Kayla says; “I must have looked *ridiculous*. I hadn't got headphones, so I tried to listen to the instructions on loudspeaker as I did the 5 minute walking warm up. So far so good, walking I can manage.

Then it was time for my first ever 60 second run.

I've never run any distance before so had no idea how it would go, and probably went at it a bit fast so huffed and puffed my way to a very red-faced 60th second. Then there was a 90 second walk. I hadn't died, heartrate started to come down, and I planned

not to try to go quite as fast for the next 60 seconds. And it wasn't too bad! By half way through I started to actually enjoy the fact that had managed to run a full two minutes (again without dying), and as the session finished the App congratulated me on running a full eight minutes in total. Amazing!

Over the next few weeks I familiarised myself with the Social Running App Strava, which records and uploads your runs so you can see what time and pace you ran - which was a massive boost for my motivation as all of a sudden I became interested in trying to beat my last run's pace. This turned out to be the biggest element of my running motivation, as it gave me a sense of progress and achievement even though I was doing it all entirely on my own. The Couch to 5K app recommends running three times a week, which I found very difficult with having children but my resolution was to make the time for a positive change, so I did. Fast forward a few weeks and I entered a Race for Life 5K, delighted to have

finished despite having to walk a few sections and feeling entirely unfit! I had started to notice my body shape change so as well as keeping track on Strava I took photos every fortnight of how I was changing, as another form of motivation. Over the coming months I continued running 3/4 times a week, and was pleased to see my pace steadily begin to increase.

Leyla introduced me to our local Running Club Kingstone Runners, where I felt initially incredibly out of place with so many 'proper runners', but they were so welcoming and always waited for the slowcoach at the end of the pack. Gradually as my speed and stamina increased I ran a 10K section of the Yorkshire Marathon and raised money to run the Doncaster 10K for Bluebell Wood. I'm now training for a half marathon, and my New Year's Resolution is to share what I have discovered this year, so I created Mother Runners Barnsley to encourage other mums to make their first steps into running. If I can do it, so can you!”

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Newsletter - January 2020 In normal times I would by now have set the budget for South Yorkshire Police and determined the precept – the amount we pay for policing through council tax – for the coming year (starting in April).

The government usually lets us have the details of how much grant it will give for policing before Christmas.

I would sit down with the Chief Constable and discuss what the police needed. I would then work out what we needed from the precept.

Then I would make public what I am minded to set the

precept at and I could then consult the public about it – something I have to do by law.

But this year the General Election fell across this timetable and everything has been put back.

I write this in mid-January and there has still been no announcement. It is going to be very hard indeed to do all that has to be done and meet the legal deadlines.

In the meantime I am consulting as best I can by asking people whether they would be prepared to pay a

little more in council tax so that we can continue the journey the force is making from ‘requires improvement’, four years ago, to ‘good’ last year – according to Her Majesty’s Inspectors.

Police Officer Numbers in Barnsley Last year we increased overall police officer numbers in South Yorkshire – including the Barnsley District – for the first time since 2010.

Before that, numbers had fallen year on year by over 500 – from about 3,000 to 2,400.

The Chief Constable had little choice about this.

It was all the result of the years of austerity and cuts in government grant.

But in 2019 we used local money – council tax – to start to reverse that downward trend.

As a result, there are more police now than a year ago.

Then, at the General Election, all the political parties committed themselves to restoring the 20,000 police that had been lost nationally.

Having chopped them, the government will, of course, want credit for putting them back!

But at least they accepted that there was a link between falling police numbers and rising crime, especially house burglaries and crimes associated with gangs and drugs.

The sudden rise in knife crime two years ago nationally – though not in Barnsley – was probably the decisive factor that brought everyone to their senses.

I welcome this, though we had already begun to recruit anyway.Two things are now starting to happen as a result.

First, more police officer’s means that more places will have to be found for them to

be based.

In some parts of the county this could mean we look again at existing police buildings that may have been closed.

To take one example in the Barnsley District, we are looking again at the police station in Hoyland for a neighbourhood team to use by day.

At the moment it is used for other purposes by civilian staff.

More police will also mean more officers for neighbourhood teams.

Neighbourhood teams were another casualty of the cuts.

Police officers were taken out.

PCSOs were often all that remained. Now officers are being put back – and they, crucially, have powers of arrest.

So in Hoyland there will be a full neighbourhood team in the station when that is re-opened, hopefully, in a few months’ time. At present the team operates from Goldthorpe police station.

I am sure this will be welcomed by everyone, not least the police.

It means that this new team will be nearer the people and community they serve – something the local councillors have been pressing for.

So, over the next few years, be prepared to see more police.

And yes, they will look younger. Much younger.

Response to Arbourthorne Shooting Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner has condemned the shooting of a 12-year-old over the weekend and has pledged to work together with Sheffield City Council and other partners to end violence in the city.

The incident, which involved the discharge of firearms in a public place, is described as “utterly reckless”.

Dr Billings, said: “This needless violence will not be tolerated. We are determined to work together and, with all our partners, to rid Sheffield

of the guns and knives that have blighted the lives of individuals and communities.

“A great deal has already been done, including the setting up of the South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit at the end of last year.

The Unit is looking at the causes of violence and leading the multi-agency approach to tackle. This will be done through hard line action with offenders and by co-ordinating a long-term, preventative approach to violence to tackle the root

Jolly Boys’ Brewery says ‘Try January’ Over the festive season many people may be guilty of over indulging.

As the decorations come down and people begin to assess the damage on their health and wallets some are encouraged to participate in ‘Dry January’. At Jolly Boys’ brewery they are encouraging their regulars to ‘try January’.

“In all seriousness ‘dry January’ sounds like a good idea thought up by the charity Alcohol Concern some years ago. However, we do have some reservations.

As a business promoting real ale and responsible

drinking our customers rarely tend to over indulge. Even at Christmas”. Said Brewery manager Paul.

He added, “we would much rather people come into our pub regularly and responsibly. We would rather the Great British public were encouraged to drink alcohol in moderation and of higher quality for that matter. We would love people to drink in social settings like pubs and be encouraged not to drink alone. In our view ‘Dry January’ really encourages the public to abstain in January for a

whole month. This for many endorses overdoing it over the festive season and could encourage people to binge drink”.

The Jolly Boys are asking the public to support their local pubs.

“January is a challenging time of year for small businesses. We fully expect people to spend less during January however, it would really help your local pub if people met up with friends and had a few social drinks at least once in the month. At a time of year that is well documented to have increases in people living with mental health issues. We feel that a meet up with friends would do some people some good”.

In recent years, independent breweries and pubs have staged a fightback with an informal campaign on social media with the strapline ‘Try January’.

The intention is to encourage people to meet up in pubs and bars for a pint of guest ale or a new brew from a real ale producer. “The real ale producers are really innovative and are producing new and exciting beers all the time.” The small beer producers like Jolly Boys’ Brewery are producing great beers that cannot always be bought in bottles and cans. Paul added “The local pub remains the best place to enjoy a cask conditioned ale in all its glory”.

Only this week industry figures suggest that pub numbers are rising for the first time in a

decade. “Pubs have definitely changed. Pubs that can offer a point of difference, whether it selling high quality food, modern hoppy beers on keg or offering really well-made locally brewed ales on hand-pull tend to be the pubs that are loved the most. We have found more customers are wanting to drink locally brewed beers.

Enjoy the once dying art of conversation in a friendly environment, so that is what we try and offer”.

The message is loud and clear this January.

Get out there at least once and check up on your friends. Meet up in a local business for a bite to eat, a cup of coffee or even a pint. I’ll drink to that!

Tag rugby is a noncontact team game in which each player wears a belt that has two velcro tags, attacking players attempt to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by pulling a velcro tag from the ball carrier. Tag rugby promotes core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

The sessions were arranged by Level 3 Sport students as part of their course which requires them to

organise a sporting event. Pupils from Burton Road Primary School, Summer Lane Primary School and Kexborough Primary School visited the College to take part in the tournament.

George Davis, a Level 3 Sport and Physical Activity student, said: “I really enjoyed the tournament. It was very competitive and provided me with team work, organisational and communication skills which I can use in the future.”

Tyler Moore from White Rose Rugby, added: “High quality of coaching delivery is essential to ensure both the growth and sustainability of rugby whilst keeping students and pupils engaged and developing their core values.”

New professional music course on offer at Barnsley College Barnsley College’s Higher Education Music department is launching Pro Tools Fundamentals, a software course introducing essential concepts and principles, after becoming an official Avid Learning partner.

The Pro Tools Fundamental course covers everything you need to know in order to complete a basic Pro Tools project and is ideal for new or experienced users of the software who would like to build a solid foundational understanding of the programme.

Students will learn how to build sessions that include multi-track recordings of live audio, MIDI sequences and virtual instruments.

Hands-on exercises and

projects introduce essential techniques for recording and importing audio, arranging media on tracks and using mixing techniques to finalise a production.

Barnsley College is pleased to offer the twoday course at a reduced price of £250 and there is a further reduction for current Barnsley College students. The course will run on Thursday 20 February and Friday 21 February, and students need to pay in full by Friday 31 January.

Barnsley activity club is Our Place to be

Our Place (Barnsley) C.I.C 10873719 is a non-profit social activities club for adults with learning disabilities. The organisation was established in July 2017 after the previous operator ,who are a major charilty in the field, concluded that the group no longer fit their long term plans.

Our members were left with little alternative options, they did not want to lose their group or have their friendship circles split up, and so I made the bold decision to keep the group operating.

The organisation provides drop in sessions 4 days per week at Priory Campus. At drop in sessions members can choose their own activity from a wide variety of equipment, we often have arts and crafts, dominoes,

board games and karaoke all happening at the same time in one room.

We also have twice weekly bowling, chat and food sessions at our local bowling alley, this is a great opportunity to meet with friends outside of the organisation, learn vital skills such as money management and develop in confidence.

Our Place is determined to truly be memberled, as such members of the group voted to choose the name and logo of the organisation. We are proud to say that members of the group are involved in a variety of decisions about how the organisation works such as: choosing our social media sites, choosing activities such as disco's and what produce we should sell in the tuck shop.

We now have a small team

of fabulous volunteers who provide our members and staff with excellent support, learning opportunities and fun activities. We are always

open to recruit more volunteers, there is such a variety of things happening that our volunteers have so many opportunities to enjoy

their volunteer hours, we strongly beleive that volunteering should be enjoyable and rewarding.

Students deliver professional seminars BSc (Hons) Physical Activity, Health and Exercise students from Barnsley College have been delivering professional seminars for their final-year module ‘Special Populations and Physical Activity’.

Students looked at how physical activity can help a range of different people, including young males with depression, young females, older adults and obese people. They delivered their findings to a host of industry experts from Yorkshire Sport, Public Health Barnsley, NHS Barnsley, Tom Talks, Mind Over Matter Foundation, Jake Bellamy Personal Trainer and James Ritchie Training.

Enzo Guarini, Sports Tutor, said: “Throughout the run-up to the

seminars students have been exploring the physical activity intervention strategies and policies, how it impacts special populations and shapes the way we experience life.

“The seminars allowed industry professionals to view the incredible work developed by our students and offers an opportunity to engage and discuss their work, offer support and guidance and be part of a community.”

Growing Wild – Barnsley’s first outdoor nursery!

Growing Wild Outdoor Nursery is the realisation of the hopes, dreams, trials and tribulations of myself and fellow outdoor specialist Lindsey Bielby. After many knock-backs, trying to set up an outdoor nursery independently, we decided to join forces and have one final attempt.

I had started a new job at Barnsley College in September 2017, teaching on the BA Early Years and set up a visit to Wigfield Farm, one of the college’s sites, with a view to finding an outdoor space to work with my students. As well as arranging some opportunities as planned, I couldn’t help thinking what a fantastic location this would be for our nursery and so had to ask the question. To my surprise, it was met with enthusiasm and support, a refreshing change from the negativity we had come across on our journey so far.

If we then fastforward 18 months to May 2019, through many more ups and downs, tears and tantrums, red tape and very nearly accepting another job offer, the day came when the email landed in our in-box …

‘The proposed lease between Barnsley College and Growing Wild Outdoor Nursery has been approved …’

I remember going through a whole spectrum of emotions, from shock and disbelief, to excitement and giddiness and then shear fear! This thing was now real, and we had to get on and actually do it! I had stopped mentioning the

progress to friends and hoped they wouldn’t ask – it had been literally years since I set out on this journey and almost embarrassing that nothing had come of my efforts.

We signed the lease on 23rd May and began work almost immediately, pretty overwhelmed by the task that lay ahead of us. Having borrowed a small amount each from the bank to cover the cost of resources, Lindsey and I knew that aside from the fencing and paving (thanks Andrew and Matt), the majority of the work was to be done by us (with help from some very kind family and friends). We drew out some designs, ordered a few tonnes of bark, gravel and sand and picked up our shovels.

It was a race to the finish line for our open day on 1st September which was an amazing day with sixty families coming to look around.

Ofsted came for their initial visit on September 23rd and we opened our doors on the 31st. We now have three new members of staff, twelve children and counting … (Janet Packer)

Liss Hits The High Notes In Summer Show She's a dangerous woman who will be swinging from the chandelier in Barnsley this Summer! Liss Jones is bringing her incredible tribute show to the Metrodome Arena and she's got pop royalty coming with her. We sat down with her to discuss performing, her special TV appearances and Ariana Grande...

Hello Liss! Tell us a bit about your tribute shows.

Where did it all begin?

I started impersonating artistes at a very young age. It was a party trick that I would call my friends up and wish them happy birthday in the voice of Britney Spears and then I realised I could make a show out of it and I've never looked back.

Have you always liked performing?

I have always loved performing, I entered my first singing competition at the age of 2, I don't think my parents could stop me from wanting to be on stage, haha!

What has been your biggest show so far?

My biggest show so far has been my appearances on The Voice UK where I reached the final 8 in Rita Ora's team.

You're coming to Metrodome Arena in Barnsley this Summer with your Sia and Ariana Grande tribute show.

What can we expect?

Yes I can't wait! You can expect replica costumes and exact choreography, a fun jam packed show that I hope everyone will love.

Are Sia and Ariana big influences of yours?

Sia is a huge influence, not just as a singer but a songwriter and Ariana is equally as amazing.

What are your favourite artists to transform into?

My favourite artistes to impersonate are Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga, I love strong big voices.

What else can we expect from you this year?

This year I have lots of exciting things happening, I can't say too much about them yet but stay tuned!

How long do you plan on doing the shows?

Is it something you'd like to continue as long as you can?

I plan on performing as long as I can, I can't stop I love it too much.

Hospice challenges Barnsley businesses to accumulate funds Barnsley businesses are being encouraged to take on Barnsley Hospice’s annual ‘Accumulator Challenge’ to raise funds.

Teams taking part will be given £29 and challenged to turn it into as much money as possible throughout the 29 days of February. The winner will be the team that makes the most profit, and there will also be a prize for the most innovative fundraising idea.

Last year 15 teams took part, including Victoria Medical Centre, Wilbys Estate Agents and XPO Logistics. Over £10,000 was raised for the hospice, the highest-ever total generated by the Accumulator Challenge.

Tankersley Manor were crowned the 2019 winners after they raised £1,858 through a quiz night, name

the teddy bear competition and an ‘Orangeaid’ football tournament.

Andy Barber, part of the winning team at Tankersley Manor, said: “I visited the hospice before through my old job, and it makes you appreciate the commitment shown by all the staff and volunteers. I think it’s one of

the best charities the hotel has worked with – we want to help the people who care for our community.”

The Accumulator Challenge is organised by Simon Atkinson, corporate fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice. He said: “Now entering its third year, the Accumulator Challenge is an

innovative way that businesses can raise funds for the hospice, and what better way to introduce a bit of team building into the workplace?”

The hospice encourages participants to think of creative ways to raise as much money as possible.

Last year’s ideas included a ‘pie in the face’ challenge, selling doggy bow ties, a bungee jump, selling homemade valentine’s cards and an office swear box. Previous teams have also done bake sales and raffles to boost their total.

Simon added: “The support we receive from the Barnsley business community plays a vital role in helping us provide patient care, so we’re urging as many companies as possible from across the borough to get involved. We

raised £10,000 last year and we’re hoping to raise even more this year!”

Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a progressive, life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease.

The money raised through corporate fundraising goes towards helping the hospice raise over £2m it needs each year to fund compassionate, high-quality patient care and support for families. A further £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Why get gas central heating?

Lisa, from Hoyland, had a brand new gas central heating system fitted after her mother told her about Better Homes Barnsley’s central heating offer.

Prince O’ Wales and Afc Lundwold have both resigned due to not being able to put 11 players on the pitch regularly on a Sunday morning.

On a brighter note, Birdwell Rovers are flying the flag for Barnsley football by reaching the last 4 of the County FA Sunday Junior Cup. They eased into the semi-finals with a 4-0 victory against Sheffield Sixs earlier this month. Rovers are well placed in the league (3rd place) and unbeaten with games in hand. They have also moved into the semifinals of the Challenge Cup after a hard fought 3-0 away victory against Athersley Rec in the quarter finals. Ryan Hallsworth (pictured) bagged all 3 goals. However, the Rec were their own worst enemies by failing to convert two penalties. Worsbrough Common maintain their place at the top of the table although Cobcar S&SC (2nd) and Athersley Rec (4th) are well placed to challenge for the title.

In Division One, Northside Lodge WMC’s maintain their 100% record in the league with 27 points from 9 games.

Carlton Athletic sit nicely in 2nd, their only defeat in the league being to the league leaders. FC Portcullis could be dark horses in the title race also with just one defeat, again, to the league leaders.

Portcullis have also reached the semi-final of the Hospital Cup. Mount fc (pictured) have recently relocated their HQ base to The Sun (Monk Bretton) and that is reflected in a name change. After finishing in the bottom half of the old Division 2 last season the club are now sat in a very respectable 3rd place in Division 1. Top scorer is Thomas Agus (pictured) with 10 goals in 7 league games.

BARNSLEY F.C. The Reds Report I’m convinced the Super Reds are staying up. I really think we’ve got enough there.

Don’t get me wrong – there’s still a long way to go before we complete the great escape. It’s likely to go down to the last few games and the upturn in form the Reds have shown has got to continue for the next few months.

But – bar a bad couple of results in the cup and at home in the league to Preston – I think the lads have shown they’ve got enough to stay up.

At the time of writing, Barnsley sit third from bottom, five points adrift of safety. But, for me they’ve shown in the games against Huddersfield, Millwall and QPR of late that they can stay up if they show some consistency.

Attack is our best form of defence (given our struggles at the back) and we’ve clearly got enough going forward to trouble other teams. I think we’ve got two real players in Woodrow and Chaplin while Mowatt is clearly Championship level.

It’s not a definite and nothing’s certain in football, but, we’ve got a chance. And after all downs we’ve had this season, we should be grateful we’ve got that chance.

It’s not long before the Wednesday game and Oakwell is always bouncing for big occasions. But it’s gonna take that sort of support and atmosphere week in week out to keep us up.

I’m not gonna lie, there’s nowt worse than listening to fans moan at Oakwell. I know we all pay our money and I know we’re all entitled to our opinion, but, I know for a fact every Barnsley fan wants us playing Championship football next season.

So how about getting behind them? Instead of booing them or having a go at players, show them a bit of support. It goes a long way and, with any luck, we’ll be invading the Oakwell pitch after staying up at the end of the season.

First team star visits local primary school Elliot Simoes paid a visit to St Helen’s Primary Academy in late January.

The attacker was the latest Reds first-team player to give up his time to give back to the local community.

Simoes took part in a question and answer assembly in front of the whole school, which began with an introduction about himself before pupils asked the first team star a range of questions.

Having provided an insight into life growing up Portugal, Simoes then stayed behind to pose for photos with fans.

For Simeos, this was his first player visit in Barnsley colours. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Oakwell after signing for the Reds in January last year.

He said: “It was good because I remember being that age and seeing football players visit from teams I supported, so it was nice to give back.

“When the kids asked about my diet and things like that, it’s nice to teach them about eating healthily and they can learn from it. It gives the ones that want to play football someone to look up to.”

February soccer camps available to book Holiday Soccer Camps are back and will be running at the Oakwell during February half-term.

Holiday courses are open to boys and girls of all abilities and give them the opportunity to learn new football skills, improve their techniques through a variety of activities, and most importantly, have fun.

Places are available for 5-14-

year-olds and for children aged 2-4-years old on the ‘Mini Kickers’ course.

In addition to the health benefits of children taking

part in sports activities, the school holiday courses provide parents/carers with a value for money childcare option during the school

break.

There are competitions with lots of prizes to be won including ‘Sportsman’, ‘Most Improved Player’ and more.
