Welcome to the December edition As expected of course, we’ve packed this issue with festive fun and frolics for the Christmas season. We’ve been anxiously opening our advent calendars, rapidly wrapping presents and writing cards until our hands ache…but we’ve still made sure that this issue is as festive as can be for you! This month, we’ve dedicated a section to stocking fillers for those who need to give Father Christmas a helping hand on last
minute gifts! We have two hilarious festive features on the 12 Days of Christmas and an Average Christ-mess written by our resident writer Pat. I can’t believe I’m saying this already…Merry Christmas! What a year it’s been too. It feels like yesterday I was standing in my bedroom window watching the fireworks as the clock struck 12:00, welcoming 2019. Now we’re welcoming a year that sounds like something from the Terminator… 2020! I’ve always loved Christmas. As someone born in the 90’s, I’ve experienced traditional Christmases where kids got proper toys and everyone came round for light bites and trifle on Boxing Day. These days I feel it’s a bit dampened by social media, you sort of find the kids taking selfies with Christmas camera filters after dinner rather than a game of Monopoly or Charades. Most of you will probably say that the young ones are worse for it, but I must admit, I think the adults are! I remember last Christmas, settling down once family had gone with a hot chocolate and scrolling down my social media feed. ‘Look out our Alice opening her presents!’ ‘Santa has been to visit our Harvey look at all these toys!’ ‘Here is our Aaron having his first spoonful of Christmas pudding!’ ‘Nicola Whatshername has uploaded 196 photos into the album My Lovely Kids At Christmas.’ I honestly can’t stand it! Alright, we all like to upload the odd semidrunk, mince pie filled Christmas picture to Facebook. We all do it nowadays, whether it’s family photographs or a special present you received, maybe a surprise proposal or the pet’s first Christmas where they haven’t knocked the tree down. But some people just take it too far, uploading every second of their day onto the social media site, much to the dismay of their 253 friends that have to scroll through it all. In my opinion, Christmas Day should be the one day of the year if any that we put our phones to one side. Whether you go out to eat, have a traditional meal with family or just
laze about on the sofa with a glass of wine, I think social media almost ruins it. If you have enough time to upload 196 photos of the little ones and list everything all the family got for Christmas, then you surely can’t be enjoying your day at all. Oh, and you’re kind of showing off your house and new gifts to potential burglers… I think what I’m trying to say is, Christmas is all about family and love- so use it as so. If there’s another lesson I can get across in my column before I run out of space and spill onto the Crossword (it’s a tricky one anyway) it’s to be sensible with your drinking this festive season! I stopped getting drunk after the episode where I left work a few years ago for Christmas break, drank my eyeballs out in The White Bear in the town centre and found myself stuck behind the bathroom door at home! My head was indeed spinning a little bit and I would not recommend it! So, I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and I will see you all in the bumper issue of Together & Local next year! Weeee! Barnsley Council NEWS ROUNDUP Changes to bin collections over Christmas Don’t forget about the changes to your bin collections this Christmas! Bins that are scheduled to be collected on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day will be rescheduled. Changes to collections on these dates will be on your current bin calendars - but you can also view them at barnsley.gov.uk/waste. Information on what can be recycled over the festive period can be found at the Barnsley Council Facebook and Twitter pages. There will also be reminders of what
items belong in what bin as well as some handy tips on how residents can reuse, reduce and recycle.
Civic Carol Service back for Christmas 2019 Locals are invited to join the Mayor at the annual Civic Carol Service on Thursday 19 December from 4pm. This festive-filled event will be held at St Mary's Parish Church.
The traditional carol service will be led by St Mary's priest, Revd Canon Stephen Race and will be accompanied by the Mayor's Chaplain, Revd David Hildred. Guests are in for a festive treat with a performance from Barnsley's Civic Choir, and a jolly set of Christmas carols performed by John Higgins. The service will also be accompanied by the Barnsley Metropolitan Band who will be performing a festive solo piece, led by musical director, Alex Francis, as well as accompanying some of the traditional carols for everyone to join in and sing along. Yorkshire’s first commemorative walkway launched in honour of Barnsley’s HM armed forces Yorkshire’s first HM Armed Forces Commemorative Walkway has been launched by Barnsley Council. The space, which has been provided in partnership with Barnsley College, has been created for families and friends to remember those who have and are currently serving. The commemorative piece is located on Westgate, Barnsley by the Barnsley Sixth Form College gardens and was launched with an opening ceremony led by the Mayor of Barnsley. Built with honed granite, the walkway is initially made up of 12 flagstones featuring the names, service and regiments of Barnsley’s servicemen and women. The first stone is dedicated to Private Matthew Thornton from the fourth battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, who sadly lost his life in Afghanistan on Wednesday 9 November 2011. Michael Thornton, Private Matthew Thornton’s father, said: “Matthew was a polite young man who took time out to help the other soldiers around him if they were struggling. He loved the army and comradery and was honoured to be corner guard at the cenotaph in Barnsley in 2010. “The feedback from his Afghanistan camp was that he conducted himself more than a territorial soldier and he went on to receive the Rushworth Trophy in 2010. His mother and I are extremely proud of his achievements, and we’re pleased that we’ll be able to honour his name on Yorkshire’s first commemorative walkway.”

What’s On Barnsley Markets 1982 - 1987 Barnsley Civic On now – January 2020
Barnsley Market has formed an integral part of the town’s life for centuries. Though the market has changed appearance and location many times one thing has always remained consistent; the people. Many locals will have fond memories of the traders and characters who frequented the market over the years. One of those well-known characters was amateur photographer Harry Brookes. Over a period of five decades, Harry documented the changing face of the market, its traders and the shoppers. His love of the market community and interest in local history led Harry to take over 1000 photographs, many of which were donated to Barnsley Archives. This exhibition displays a selection of Harry’s pictures which span a six year period of 1982 – 1987.
North: Fashioning Identity Barnsley Civic On now – 21 December North: Fashioning Identity explores the way the North of England is depicted, constructed and celebrated in select photographs, artworks and fashion collections. The show brings together visions of the North, unpicking themes that appear regularly in design and media. It considers truth, myth and the spaces in-between. Featuring over 100 photographs, alongside fashion garments and artworks, the exhibition positions documentary work dating back over eighty years next to more recent style media. This exhibition is both about the style and cultural heritage of the North, and the ways in which the ideals of it – the clothes, the music, the smells, the houses, the men, the women, the communities – have spread and, in turn, been
shaped by others through visual representations. It is about the evolution of tradition, character and identity as much as it is about photography and

Pushing Paper: Contemporary Drawing from 1970 until now Cooper Gallery 9 December – March 2021 For the first time, the British Museum has co-curated an exhibition with partner museums from around the UK to display and then tour contemporary artworks from its Prints and Drawings collection. Pushing paper: contemporary drawing from 1970 to now will illustrate how artists experiment with the power of paper to express their ideas, pushing the medium in new directions. It will highlight the breadth and quality of the Museum’s collection of modern art, as well as its global scope. The exhibition of 56 works will showcase the astonishing diversity of contemporary drawing over the last fifty years. It will begin at the British Museum and then travel on to partner museums as part of the Museum’s National Programmes, allowing more people around the UK the opportunity to see British Museum objects outside of London. The Cooper Gallery is one of only three galleries in the UK that will host the exhibition and the only one in Yorkshire where you can see the magnificent work.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Crimbo!
Kylie makes surprise visit to Tarn You read that right – the one and only Kylie Minogue has been to Tarn! Can you believe it? Kylie visited Cross the Sky – a Barnsley theatre group for adults with learning difficulties, based at The Civic. It was all in aid of a Channel 4 show hosted by Alan Carr that will be broadcast on Christmas Day – where Kylie visits her super fans across the country. Super fan Simon Grainger – who runs Kylie themed musical classes for the group – was the lucky recipient of the surprise visit. Simon said: “What a wonderful surprise, we’re all still on Cloud Nine after Kylie’s visit. It meant so much to us all and was such a special afternoon. “Having the opportunity to sing
some of the group’s favourite Kylie songs with the lady herself was truly a dream come true and an afternoon we will treasure for the rest of our lives.” Go on Kylie! Always liked that lass. She’s a proper legend!
I have to say, I was walking around Tarn centre other night on my way to Market Kitchen (my new favourite place to eat, if tha’s not tried it yet, tha’s missing out!) and I felt reyt in Christmas spirit! Have you seen new lights they’ve put up for this year? They look cracking! And I have to say, the light switch on was top notch this year, too. Did you see that giant earth they brought into college? Wow! I felt like a spaceman. It was summat to behold! They had a massive talking story book in St Mary’s Church as well – reading Twas The Night Before Christmas.
Along with all the other stuff they had, it was a fantastic event. I love Barnsley at Christmas. It’s always a tradition that we go for a few drinks in Tarn centre week before Christmas after a last bit of Christmas shopping, and now all the new places are opening, it will stay a tradition for the foreseeable future. There’s loads of places to eat and drink, and slowly but surely, a few more places to shop, too! 2019 has been a great year for Barnsley, hopefully 2020 will be even better!
Hospice initiative gives money off at New Look Barnsley lad could bag Christmas number one We love supporting our own in Tarn, so I was over moon to hear that Shaun Dooley could bag himself a Christmas number one! The Barnsley actor – originally from Cudworth - covered Taylor Swift’s song Never Grow Up as part of album Got It Covered which helped to raise money for Children in Need in November. The album features 11 songs performed by celebs including Helena Bonham-Carter, Jim Broadbent and
David Tennant. But Shaun’s song - which features a music video alongside Grimethorpe Colliery Band - has been tipped for Christmas number one by the bookies! How brill is that? To listen to Shaun’s single, and to help him be in with the chance of sealing the number one spot, search ‘Never Grow Up’ on streaming sites or buy the single in shops.
One of the reasons I love Christmas so much is charities get a lot of help at this time of year – and Barnsley Hospice is no different. New Look on Cheapside has partnered with the Barnsley Hospice charity shop on Eldon Street to offer a 20 per cent discount voucher for shoppers who donate a full bag of unwanted clothing to the Eldon Street shop. Stephen Hatfield, retail manager at
Barnsley Hospice, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with New Look on this fantastic initiative to inspire shoppers and encourage footfall at our Eldon Street shop. We are always on the look-out for quality items, and all we ask is that you please make sure that the pieces you’d like to donate can be resold and loved again.” The promotion will run until 13 January. Growing Wild – Barnsley’s first outdoor nursery! Growing Wild Outdoor Nursery is the realisation of the hopes, dreams, trials and tribulations of myself and fellow outdoor specialist Lindsey Bielby. After many knock-backs, trying to set up an outdoor nursery independently, we decided to join forces and have one final attempt. I had started a new job at Barnsley College in September 2017, teaching on the BA Early Years and set up a visit to Wigfield Farm, one of the college’s sites, with a view to finding an outdoor space to work with my students. As well as arranging some opportunities as planned, I couldn’t help thinking what a fantastic location this would be for our nursery and so had to ask the question. To my surprise, it was met with enthusiasm and support, a refreshing change from the negativity we had come across on our journey so far. If we then fastforward 18 months to May 2019, through many more ups and downs, tears and tantrums, red tape and very nearly accepting another job offer, the day came when the email landed in our in-box … ‘The proposed lease between Barnsley College and Growing Wild Outdoor Nursery has been approved …’ I remember going through a whole spectrum of emotions, from shock and disbelief, to excitement and giddiness and then shear fear! This thing was now real, and we had to get on and actually
do it! I had stopped mentioning the progress to friends and hoped they wouldn’t ask – it had been literally years since I set out on this journey and almost embarrassing that nothing had come of my efforts. We signed the lease on 23rd May and began work almost immediately, pretty overwhelmed by the task that lay ahead of us. Having borrowed a small amount each from the bank to cover the cost of resources, Lindsey and I knew that aside from the fencing and paving (thanks Andrew and Matt), the majority of the work was to be done by us (with help from some very kind family and friends). We drew out some designs, ordered a few tonnes of bark, gravel and sand and picked up our shovels. It was a race to the finish line for our open day on 1st September which was an amazing day with sixty families coming to look around. Ofsted came for their initial visit on September 23rd and we opened our doors on the 31st. We now have three new members of staff, twelve children and counting … (Janet Packer)

Pat’s Garden Happy December you lovely people. Hope you've all been wrapped up and enjoying the great outdoors this Autumn. I have been doing a bit more garden improvements. A heavy job that builds muscles and gives you a whole body workout. You see, I have a laurel bush, been there a few years, it's grown too big and I decided it was time to retire it. All well and good, but with saws, secateurs and loppers and of course my trusty gloves, I went to face my demon. We have previous, this tree and me! I have attempted, in the past, to return this tree to it's maker. Sawed it down, creosoted its little stumps, thought I'd seen the end of it- but no! Back it grew as if it had been fed ambrosia from the heavens! So, I faced my nemesis, I was determined, I was prepared, I was going to give it my all. Now, I'm not the strongest or the fittest, but attack that tree I did! It fought back! Battering my face with it's leather-like leaves, drenching me with rain water collected amongst said leaves and smacking my hands with it's whiplike branches. I huffed and I puffed, and I sawed and I chopped, I pulled and I tugged and boy did I perspire! Double over with hands on knees and gasping like I'd run a marathon, I looked up to see- daylight! Oh, my, Lord, I did it! The surge of confidence it gave me was on par with a small lottery win. I straightened to survey my handiwork, then I noticed the family car sized pile of branches and leaves behind me! Oh! My back was screaming, my hands were aching, my shoulders had stiffened and my celebration turned to defeat. I had beaten the tree, but now had to move all my debris! After a long soak and good nights sleep, I rallied myself. On the frostiest, coldest morning of the year so far, I was ready! So seven o'clock that morning (before I had chance to back out) I faced the mountain! Now I didn't have to move it far as the crow flies, but without a pair of wings, I had to plan my route. My front garden is on three levels, the branches being on the third! So, launching branches like javelins, I threw, dragged and swept them to the lower level. Yes! No! Now to get them into the back garden! After much dragging and pulling and the odd slide on the frost, I completed my task! Now it's your turn, how the heck can I stop it returning again? Please don't say dig up the stump, I just might cry. So with coffee in hand, I shall enjoy my new view and await your advice. Merry Christmas to all you lovely people and I hope the New Year brings you new plants and pleasure.

Cooking Corner Get your bake on! This time of year is a baker's dream. Maybe you're the head chef in your house, ooh the possibilities! Now, I'm not going to tell you how to sort your Christmas extravaganza, you all have your own tricks and favourites, after all we all have our own traditions. And those of you who fear the kitchen, don't worry! Local shops, markets and supermarkets all have excellent tasting and looking delicacies. You can make them or buy them and add your own accompaniments. I will say though that it's a great time to get your children involved. Whether it's with pastry making, biscuit cutting or icing shop-bought treats. They love to help and create their own festive foods. Does it really matter if their Santa biscuit has three eyes? All the better to see in the dark, and
what if the snowman is a little on the slender side (wouldn't we all like to be!), he could be part melted. So what if Rudolph looks more like he's been run over by the sleigh, he will taste just as good and you can always say it's a chocolate snowflake! It brings back memories of my own childhood, plopping jam into my mum's tarts, having the leftover bits of pastry to create my own designs (OK they tasted awful, but the joy was in the making). Oh, and shaping the little coconut macaroons with an eggcup, happy days indeed. Now, please don't let the main meal stress you out if you're the chef. Does it really spoil your enjoyment of the day if you forget to turn the sprouts on? Or
neighbours, who don't get so many visitors or will be eating alone. Those tasty treats the kids have helped with, can be placed in a little box and delivered on Christmas Eve to let people know they haven't been forgotten. After all the preparation, cooking and eating comes...LEFTOVERS! Now boil this is where you have to get them to mush? Or roast your creative. There are only so many potatoes until they become times you can serve up cold missiles of teeth destruction? Just turkey! Also, the mountain laugh about it! All I want for Christmas is to brew As we enter the festive season I went to Barnsley based Jolly Boys Brewery to preview their special Christmas and winter warming ales. In recent years there has been an increasing trend. Micro-breweries are producing a range of traditional ales, but with new and interesting flavours. “Breweries are now pushing the boundaries and developing understanding of what flavours compliment different ale styles best” Says brewery manager Paul. “Last year we brewed a coffee and Vanilla infused porter. The bold malty flavours in the porter stood up to the coffee and vanilla and the entire brew sold out in days which was really exciting”. He added that some people really enjoy a full-bodied dark ale when the nights draw in and that the coffee and vanilla porter will be back again in the coming days. Paul, who designs the recipes with his brother and Jolly Boy explains that they had been trialling nano-brews in August for a new range of dark ales. “We have porter recipe that we are delighted with and that beer is permanently available and that will not be changing. With the festive season in mind we wanted to push the boundaries and experiment with flavours that could work well in our different ales”.
Paul explained that the full staff meeting in September was a bit on the lively side due to the sheer number of test brews that needed scrutiny. He joked “we had no less than eight different beers to test. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it!” In the end and after much scrutiny the seasonal brews that got the go ahead are a mince pie flavoured porter, a marshmallow porter a chocolate fudge porter and a mango pale ale. Micro-breweries are able to brew small batches of niche beers that may not appeal to the mass market which means that they can often produce more adventurous brews than large beer producers. “We’ve already sent some of our seasonal ales out to pubs and the initial feedback has been positive and encouraging. Some of the new beers are already appearing on the bar in the Jolly Tap on the Arcade, Barnsley and the Jolly Tap, Wakefield. happy New Year”. In recent weeks I’ve visited the brewery monthly and shared a different story from the Jolly Boys’. Some have had an educational angle and other are simply about an update from a local business. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed reading as much as I’ve enjoyed writing for you. Here’s a little ditty I sing to myself as it gets closer to the ‘big day’, hopefully a few of you will understand my musings and share a giggle or a tear at my run up to Christmas.
On the twelfth day of Christmas my family gave to me… 12 ELVES ON SHELVES How much imagination can one person have, I mean, remembering to place him or her in child-friendly places and not encourage ‘naughty elf’ creations I have spotted on social media! And, by Christmas Eve it will be lucky if it’s still in the house! Parents be aware of starting this tradition! 11 DOZEN MINCE PIES Now this requires military precision, from building up of muscles to carry those enormous jars of mincemeat, to needing an extension built to house all the cooling trays and tins to keep them in! OK, I may be slightly exaggerating, but it feels like it when you are in the middle of flour bombs misting my glasses, rolling pastry and cutting circles of differing sizes (enough to feed an army), to complete blindness when I open the oven and stand too close! Glasses do not, I repeat do not, aid baking. Then, when all the little darlings are cooled, and washing up done (enough for the month), you put your feet up with a cuppa to taste the fruits of your labour and the little darling crumbles and spits sticky, juicy slime all down your chest! 10 STOCKING FILLERS How many times have I left this until the last minute to send to Santa! The trouble is I find it tricky to find things to fit in said stocking. Ramming (not so little) surprises into them on Christmas Eve has become a job only Santa with his magic could do. It’s amazing how they stretch to accommodate boxes that should really be under the tree. Phew, another mini workout. 9 ROLLS OF PAPER Oh my goodness, why do I always run out of paper? I buy reams of the stuff, then I try and find it when I need it, but nowhere to be found! How on Earth can wrapping paper grow legs or wings and
disappear! When I do track it down it’s a problem on it’s own; opening it takes a degree in physics, cutting it (without tearing or the dreaded slanted cut) to fit the gift needs a masters in Maths and don’t get me started on sticky tape! (See number 4!) Then, when all is wrapped and tied, where to store them before Santa picks them up? I don’t have an attic, so ingenious ideas become necessary. I have been known to use towels as an alternative when wardrobes are full. 8 PACKS OF CARDS Oh dear, I am one of those people that says “I’ll keep in touch, I promise.” Then I open my address book and oops! The amount of cards to write (let alone post) because I work in a school, it’s probably double anybody else writes in other professions. I find choosing close family and special friend cards the hardest. (I have been known to wander up and down the card aisle for hours!) They have to say just what I want. I know, write my own, but there’s nothing more special than finding the perfect one. Beautiful pictures with poetic verses just melt my heart. 7 BAGS OF SPROUTS Well you have to have sprouts at Christmas! Like them or not, it’s tradition! I quite like them just not the peeling and putting a little cross on the bottom, to save them opening, they are the fiddliest little green terrors on a fraught Christmas Eve. Now how do you cook yours? I’m a traditional- cook them til they’re soggy, but I hear stories of ‘aldente’ or with other tastes and flavours thrown in, but I can’t see me attempting that on the day. 6 CAROL SINGERS You don’t get them so often these days. When I was a child it was a must. OK, some voices were more angelic than
others and not everyone learnt all the verses, but wrapped up warm it was expected in my area. These days you’re lucky if you get the chorus from Jingle Bells! Then their grubby little paws stick out and won’t accept anything that’s not golden! In my day it was a satsuma, a few coins or a homemade bun and we loved it. 5 MILES OF TINSEL Now I don’t profess to have a Santa’s Grotto in my house, but I do like a bit of tinsel around my pictures etc. But, how to keep it there? Sellotape, blutack, 6 inch nails? You get it looking all shimmery and perfect, turn your back and it looks like someone killed a silver snake. Other times, it’s the gentle shush before the terrifying noise of it hitting the deck! I’ve almost lost complete meals or cups of coffee after my Ninja tinsel leaps from it’s moorings! Any tips for keeping it safely strung and to save my frayed nerves would be appreciated. 4 ROLLS OF TAPE Why can I never find the end of the roll? Then, after much sweat and tears, I got it! Only for it to split length-ways like a piece of sticky spaghetti. Get a dispenser, someone said, yeah right! The only thing that cuts is my finger! So back to the scissors and the edge of the table to dangle it from. Problem number two, it sticks to the table OK, both ends though! If I manage to get my gift wrapped, using elbows, knees, feet to hold the paper, then my sticky adversary attaches itself to the wrong bit of paper! Note to self: Buy gift bags! 3 XMAS PARTIES Wow! A party, how wonderful, I’d love to come! As soon as the words leave my mouth I’m in panic mode. What to wear? Who’s driving? Is it a late one, cause I’ve got work the next day? Oh my goodness, shoes? Are we dancing or
sitting? Oh it’ll be cold, I can’t wear a coat though, no one else will, or can I rock a furry cardigan without too many odd glances? Getting children ready is worse! Dress up party? Costume? Do they need a present to take? Oh it’ll be hot with all those games, can they wear shorts and a t-shirt? Not very festive, hmm. Will there be a Santa? I hope they don’t give them sprouts! But as usual when you arrive at said party, all the stresses are forgotten. Until, the blisters on your feet remind you the heels were a bad idea. Or the little one comes home being scared half to death by the, err, ‘man in a beard who smelled funny’ Santa. 2 NATIVITIES We all love an old fashioned nativity with the tiny tots. Well until they come home the week before needing a complete donkey outfit (with moving ears) or a king costume made from the finest silk adorned with real gemstones (cause Peter’s mum is buying him one from abroad). Heaven help you if your little angel is a star! It’s like Blackpool Illuminations after you’ve finished with the glitter and tinsel, not forgetting the thousand watt lighting! Then comes the production. All wrapped up against the freezing temperatures outside, you fry yourself in the heated hall. (Can’t have little ones cold with Jesus sandals on!) So it begins. All the tiny cherubs looking and sounding perfect. Until, child spots Dad recording him, waving arms and tongues protruding ensue. Then, army crawling teacher slides across to take a little one to the toilet (crawl faster and bring a mop!). All in all, it goes beautifully, a few tear stained eyes and soggy tissues making sweet memories. And a glass of Prosecco for me! Or two!

Shopping; Brace yourselves, it's manic out there! Wish I'd started sooner. I can't face Meadowhell, so local it is, hat, gloves, scarf, boots, bags, I'm off.
Decorations; Now is the time to check last year's supply and realise you need everything! Bald tinsel, shredded garlands and lights that don't light up! (Note to self, should have checked before yesterday's shopping trek!)
Outfits; Be it matching pyjamas or a 'little black dress' or even Xmas jumpers (too hot, don't bother). My advice is choose comfort every time, the body conscious stuff can wait for Summer.
Eating; Everywhere you turn is another festive delicacy! By Xmas Day itself you will be sick of mince pies, chocolates and yule log. Oh go on, one more mince pie then.
TV; Round about now it's tradition in my house to buy a magazine with TV programme listings. Then, it's every man for himself, with a pen to circle what to watch! Only to realise after a few moments, there's nothing worth watching.
Music; Now, I love to sing-a-long to the Xmas pop songs as much as anyone, but after an hour you realise there are so few, that they are repeating already! Might have to give carols a go.

Pets; Cats love our decorations, but maybe they don't love the cat. Especially when the mountain climbing puss has scaled and felled the tree numerous times! Dogs on the other hand, are just clumsy with their wagging tail. Low hung baubles can take a beating.
Wrapping; To help Santa, as he's rather busy, we wrap our thoughtful gifts and wait for the elves to collect them. Why don't tags stay on? It can cause confusion or embarrassment on Xmas morn- no Gran, that wasn't meant for you!
Arguments; Nerves are getting a little stretched, children making demands of presents and activities. Thank goodness for the threat of "Santa is listening!" Shame the same saying doesn't work for adults! Sharing our chores and shopping duties can cause a less than festive atmosphere!
Elusive Presents; You bought them months ago, you put them in a safe place, but where is this place? Hercule Poirot would be scratching his head! You begin to doubt ever buying the item?? Never mind, it'll probably turn up in January.
Games; Time to plan what to do after lunch on the day, bearing in mind there will be over excited (and tearful) children and slightly tipsy adults. Charades usually comes to mind, not too much forward planning, thank goodness. All ages can play, just keep an eye on Grandad incase he tries an inappropriate one!
Work Night Out; You look forward to it for weeks, discussing what to wear and what to eat. It comes to the day- work has been tiring, it's freezing cold and the only thing you want is pyjamas and a cuppa. The stamina it takes to 'beautify' yourself, then the walk, pitch black, heels and ice are not a good combination! But you know you will be first up dancing and last to leave.

Drinks; Better start planning which beverages to provide. A bottle (or two) of fizz, few cans for the men-folk, selection of juices for the drivers and plenty of sugar-free slurps for the kids (they don't need any more sugar!). Oh and of course the obligatory bottle of sherry for Granny- yuk.
Glitter; Time to keep the kids busy! If I could I would ban glitter, but it's a must for handmade cards and gifts (if my house suffers, yours can too!). I don't mind the sticking and glueing, it's the cleaning up after. I mean, industrial hoovers struggle and after twenty seven circuits, it's still sparkly carpets! Oh well, festivities can last til Spring.
Crackers; Trawling the aisles, contemplating the various colours and designs. Truth be told it doesn't really matter, what is more important is what's inside. Rotating boxes to see the back and what little treasures lay inside. Plastic tat, plastic tat, cardboard tat, ooh real treasures- HOW MUCH? Cardboard tat it is then, at least I can recycle that.
Early Mornings; Is it just me that finds these dark mornings so difficult? Or are all these busy days making me extra tired! Maybe today is the day for a tiny forty winks before the family get home. Trouble is my guilt trip kicks in, there's still so much to do! Oh well, extra coffee it is then.
Last Minute Gifts; I refuse to go shopping on Xmas Eve! So, hitting the shops one last time for those extra, spare gifts. Wine (for surprise friends visiting), chocolates (for random relatives that turn up unannounced) and a couple of selection boxes (for bribing, err, treating the little ones). Easy peasy.
Snow. Randomly, out of nowhere, the flakes begin to fall. It's all well and good when you're home, but next morning when Jack Frost has turned your street into an ice rink it's not so festive. If it could just wait til Xmas Eve! Oh well, Bambi on ice, here I go.

Cooking; Preparation for the festive feast makes for less stress on the day. I believe in sharing out the chores, someone brings pigs in blankets, someone delivers a tasty treat for afters (Xmas pud doesn't go down well in my house). Who's bringing crackers? Oh and emergency chairs? Better bring an extra jug too, can't have too much gravy.
Stains; At this point we're planning an outfit for the day, ooh our party clothes we wore. Erm, but that wine was spilt on Daddy's shirt and that chocolate sauce is still on Mummy's dress, not to mention the 'I don't know what' on the kid's jumpers. On hands and knees, at the back of the cupboard, there must be some stain remover? To do list: Buy clothes cleaner tomorrow!
Baking Day; Time to get my bake on! Traditional mince pies, but my hubby's favourite too, coconut buns. Have you tried them? Pastry base, raspberry jam and a coconut, egg, sugar and butter topping. Very moreish, but a devil to take out of the bun case, crumbling pastry spewing hot jam everywhere or flipping upside down and making me dance as it heads towards my toes! (Good job I love him!)
The Lull; Bit of a nothing day after the last few weeks. Just before all the excitement begins, maybe an easy day to calm the children and watch a festive movie, feet up and recharge for the momentous day to come.
Veggies; Now if you have a large fridge, you can get ahead of the game. Peeled and chopped and covered in cold water, your carrots, turnip, parsnips and potatoes will keep fresh. Don't bother with the little green menace (sprouts) or you could end up with flowers for lunch. Save them and the broccoli for Xmas Eve.
Santa's Treat; Now I know you're busy with all the last minute jobs- visiting relatives, buying last minute essentials- but the main priority is the little snack and drink for dear old Santa. Plan this early on (hope you saved a carrot for Rudolph!), the last thing you need is chasing round to find his glass and plate at bedtime.
So there you go, you're all prepared (and tired), sit back, relax and enjoy the festivities. Merry Christmas and to all a good night!

College marketing team wins Gold at national awards Barnsley College is celebrating after winning a Gold Award in the Communications Campaign at The College Marketing Network’s national FE First Awards 2019, an annual ceremony which rewards and celebrates the best in college marketing. Learn how to make a memorable impact using interactive presentations and augmented reality Talent United, the employer engagement initiative run by Barnsley College, is set to host a free masterclass on augmented reality and interactive presentations. Due to popular demand, the informal event returns on Tuesday 10 December, 9.30am to 11.00am in The Hub Space at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane campus. Delivered by Talent United partner James Wilmshurst, Founder of BePresentable! The one hour masterclass will demonstrate techniques for creating interactive presentations using augmented reality. Guests will also get an introduction to QR codes and learn how to use them for marketing purposes. Jess Widdowson, Enterprise Team Leader at Barnsley College, will introduce Talent United and explain how businesses can get involved with the programme which aims to bridge the gap between
education and employment. There will be an opportunity to network and complimentary refreshments will also be provided. Talent United regularly hosts a variety of partner-led workshops which are free and designed to develop key business skills. These events are open to everyone, which makes them perfect for business owners wanting to introduce new skills, or individuals with an interest in a particular subject. There has been very little football over the last three weeks due to the heavy rainfall. So last Sunday saw a welcome return for Barnsley & District Sunday League clubs in both league and cup fixtures. Birdwell Rovers won 6-1 away at Commercial Inn in the only Premier Division fixture. This moves Rovers into 3rd place in the league, ominously with a game in hand on the first place Worsbrough Common and 2nd place Cobcar S&SC. Honeywell’s 100% record in all competitions came to an abrupt end against strong opponents Westville in the
County FA Senior Cup Round 4, losing 4-0 at home. The Well (pictured) are though sitting nicely in 4th place in the Premier Division with games in hand and have reached the last eight in both the Sunday Challenge Cup and Hospital Cup respectively. Jack Portman (pictured) is their top scorer with 12 goals, 5 in league and 7 in the cups. In Division One, Darfield Cross Keys took advantage of leaders Northside Lodge WMC being on cup duty with a 5-0 victory at home to Dale Juniors. They now sit in 2nd place on goal difference over Cudworth Star.

Continued bad weather wreaks havok The adverse weather has created a backlog of games across all the cup programmes. The hope is that these games can be played over the next few weeks to get back on track, Athersley Rec and Cobcar S&SC have also reached the last eight of both cups. Walkovers into Round 1: The Courthouse, Dale Juniors, Hemsworth Town, Mount, FC Portcullis & West Green In the County FA Sunday Junior Cup FC Portcullis moved into Round Four with a good 2-0 win at home to Wadsley Jack despite finishing the game with 10 men. They now join Birdwell Rovers and Dale Juniors who remain in the competition.

BARNSLEY F.C. The Reds Report Gerhard Struber’s Red Army! What do you reckon to the new gaffer’s start, then? I think it’s been promising mi sen! Don’t get me wrong – the points haven’t started rolling in yet – but I’ve been encouraged by the performances, and the boss has already picked up his first win in charge. I don’t think the next win will be far around the corner, either. The Super Reds were unlucky away at Cardiff last time out (the last result at the time of writing). We played some great stuff going forward and were undone
by some poor defending and a late, late goal, which is football unfortunately. But when we attack, we’re a real threat. I think there will be some entertaining games between now and the end of the season, and attack will definitely be the best form of defence. We really clicked at home to Hull. It was brilliant to watch. And going back to the Cardiff game, for long periods we dominated the match. We have to believe our luck will turn. Even though we’re bottom of
the league and it looks like we’ll start 2020 in a relegation fight – I think we’ve got enough to pull off a great escape. I really do. And now more than ever, it’s important that we get behind Struber’s men and show them the support they deserve. They can’t stay up without our backing, so let’s get behind the lads and hopefully, results will improve. I don’t wanna dwell too much on the past, but I was disappointed to read the statement from the club about
Toby presents Greenacre awards Club mascot and fan favourite Toby Tyke was a special guest at Greenacre School’s annual achievement ceremony late last month. Greenacre is a special school near Dodworth that educates and cares for young people aged between three-19, with severe and complex needs. Every year, the school celebrates the incredible achievements of the pupils who have excelled in their work, as well as acknowledging the fantastic support from the staff, who give their all day-in-day-out with their hard-working attitude and commitment. Toby Tykewas joined on stage by other special guests including Cllr
Pauline Markham, Mayor of Barnsley, in front of a crowd of over 100 pupils and staff, as he presented trophies and certificates to the winners and runners-up of the awards. Women and Girls Development Officer Lynn Goodman, who leads on Reds in the Community’s Every Player Counts programme, said: “It was great to be involved at Greenacre’s annual awards again this year. The awards ceremony is an opportunity to award the remarkable pupils and staff at Greenacre for their efforts. “It was great that Reds in the Community and Barnsley FC could be a small part of the event once again this year.”
Daniel Stendel. The club reckon’s Mr Stendel was in discussion with another Championship side over taking over their manager’s job earlier this year. Apparently he never revealed that to Barnsley and the club weren’t too happy when they found out - which is why he left Oakwell in the end. He’s gone (even further) up north now to Scotland and has taken charge of Hearts, and don’t get me wrong, I really want him to do well (hopefully better than Hecky did up there!).
But if he did want to leave Oakwell at the start of the season, he should have just been honest with the club and us as supporters. I think it affected on field performances, and if he’d have gone sooner or come out and been honest, we might not be in as much trouble as we are. Saying that, I still think it was poor of the club not to thank him in their statement when he left, and I don’t think slagging him off now is the right approach, particularly as we’ve moved on and got a new manager in place. He was fantastic for us, and he’ll always be an Oakwell legend in my eyes.
First team heroes visit local schools
Three first team stars visited children in the local community in late November. Summer signings Mads Andersen and Luke Thomas met pupils at Summer Lane Primary School, while Reds in the Community’s Sports Participation Ambassador Jacob Brown took part in a question and answer assembly at All Saints Academy in Darfield. Central defender Mads said: “It was really fun. I always like to make kids happy. When you come in and see all of those smiling kids it gives me energy. It’s important to do this as a footballer because they see us as idols. It makes them happy and it’s a good experience for them.” The player visit at Summer Lane also helped shape the school’s Literacy lessons.
Headteacher Mr Smith said: “It’s a great experience of them. They’ve been doing a piece of writing for the last two weeks about being a professional footballer, culminating in being able to ask them questions. “They were really engaged and really excited. It’s great for the local community to meet people that they see on the pitch every Saturday. “Some of the boys especially have been really looking forward to it. The quality of work that they’ve produced in the build up to meeting the guys is fantastic. It’s really nice that they give their time up to come in and see the children. It just inspires them and it’s someone to look up to. One of the little girls just said ‘best day ever’ – that sums it up really.”
