WELCOME TO OUR MARCH EDITION! If you’re reading this, chances are you’re reading it on your phone, tablet or even computer! We made the decision to take our publications to being ‘online only’, but only for the better! Social media is on the up and research has shown that people are more likely to read news and articles online rather than in a physical format. Being a community publication, we always want to give as much as we can to the community groups, local schools and organisations. We were spending a lot of our funds on distribution and printing, with not a lot left for what we’re set out to do! Our advertisers are our ‘sponsors’, of which we’re offering so much more to including social media coverage and regular appearances in the publication. We hope you enjoy this brand new format and we want to reassure you that we still have the same fantastic content! We have a brand new columnist, Becca Butcher, who points out some of the best parts of the town centre. We’re having a look at some Barnsley based products, made or produced in our very own ‘tarn’! Not forgetting The Pink Lounge, Barnsley Samaritans and our brand new Community News page! Now that you can enjoy Together & Local wherever you are, sit back and relax and let us know your feedback too! Let’s welcome Springtime and enjoy...

4 Barnsley Together & Local - March 2020

I can’t believe we’re already into Spring! The past few months have really highlighted just how quickly time flies by. This is probably the first year that January disappeared instead of dragging on! Before we know it, we’ll all be on our holidays, getting lovely tans and working in those unbearable office conditions with a tiny desk fan. It has it’s pros and cons! I can’t see myself going on a holiday any time soon. I’m not a fan of hot weather, I never tan (I burn!) and they all seem so expensive! It’s one thing going to Skegness for the weekend but it’s a whole different level when you’re looking at Disneyland for the week! It’s almost the same kind of thing when you’re looking for your new Summer wardrobe. Do you delve into the sales or grab a basket and fill it to the brim with brand new goodies to make your credit card cry? I think there’s a lot of pressure these days to spend a lot of money on things in order for it to be ‘perfect’ or ‘Insta-worthy’. You see endless social media posts where someone is showing off a brand new designer handbag or partying in the Bahamas or spending 8 months travelling the world and it almost looks unrealistic! We can all dream of having a huge bonus at work, winning the lottery or finding that third lucky clover on your scratchcard, but will all that actually make you happy? For some people, times are tough and all of the above are just dreams. We sat with Martin Lewis, who gave us some excellent money saving tips regarding your bank, credit cards and bills. Here is Martin’s advice. 1. It’s easy to forget about standing orders and direct debits, but make sure you don’t waste money on things you no longer need. Martin suggests taking five minutes to scan your bank accounts online or via statements to cancel any unnecessary payments - just make sure you’re out of contract first. It’s worth doing as one woman named Becky realised she was still paying for an old gym membership (£330 per year) two years after she moved, Martin said. She also cancelled a phone insurance plan for £10 a month, as her device is too old so it’s no longer worthwhile. 2. Mortgage rates have dropped near all-time lows, with some two-year fixed rates plunging below the magic 1

percent rate, Martin said. Because of this, he’s advising all home owners to check you’re on the best deal possible. Just make sure you’re free to leave without penalties before doing so. Moneysupermarket and Moneyfacts have mortgage sections so you can compare rates and all the banks and building societies have their offers available on their sites too. If it looks like you can save, Martin suggests using a mortgage broker who’ll be able to clarify which mortgage lenders are most likely to accept you. A broker will typically cost between £300 and £400 but could help you save thousands over the course of your mortgage. 3. If you’ve had a credit card for a while without clearing the balance, then you’re probably racking up lots of interest. To reduce credit card debt, Martin advises you to shift the debt to a 0 per cent balance transfer card. The cards give you the chance to pay off your debt over longer periods of time. Martin recommends Santander’s everyday credit card, which comes with no balance transfer fee and a 0 per cent interest period of 18 months. If you’re an existing NatWest customer, you can get a longer interestfree period of 20 months. Or if you don’t mind paying a 3 per cent fee on your balance transfer, Virgin Money offers 0 per cent in interest over 29 months. Just keep in mind that only those with the very best credit ratings will be offered the top deals. You can use MoneySavingExpert’s eligibility calculator to see what deals you are likely to be accepted for. I hope these tips help you to save some money and put something towards a lovely Summer holiday, wherever it may be! As long as you enjoy yourself, that’s all that matters. See you soon!

BARNSLEY BUSINESSES RAISE £25K FOR HOSPICE 24 local businesses took part in the ‘Barnsley Hospice Accumulator Challenge’ last month to raise funds. They were each given £29 to turn into as much money as possible during the 29 days of February. The 24 teams raised a staggering £25,144 during the challenge, which was more than double the amount raised in 2019. Fundraising initiatives dreamed up by the teams included a Bargain Hunt charity special, 24-hour treadmill-athon, a head shave and doggy bowties. Simon Atkinson, corporate fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “This is the third time we have done the Accumulator Challenge and this year has been the best yet. It was incredible to have 24 teams getting involved and we are truly blown away by the amount they have raised. The ideas and enthusiasm shown by local businesses has been unbelievable.”

“

I also want to thank the people of Barnsley because we wouldn’t have reached such a fantastic total without their help and generosity. The money will help us care for the hundreds of local families who need us each year, and for that, we are very grateful.

“

Businesses in Barnsley have raised over £25,000 for Barnsley Hospice in an Apprentice-style challenge.

Barnsley Hospice provides compassionate, high-quality care for anyone in the borough with a progressive, lifelimiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. The hospice needs to raise over £2m each year to fund patient care and support for families. A further £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

AGE UK LAUNCHES 10M EMERGENCY CORONAVIRUS APPEAL As well as appealing for vital funds, Age UK is encouraging everyone who can to be a good neighbour to those around them by providing simple, immediate assistance for older people who are staying at home due to the coronavirus outbreak. Communities up and down the country are responding with all sorts of different initiatives and acts of kindness and for those looking for a way to get involved, Age UK has created a short online training video and downloadable postcard that gives guidance on ways to offer help alongside some key information for older neighbours. There are simple things everyone can do right now to help: • DONATE NOW: Demand for our vital services has increased rapidly. Help us keep our Information & Advice and friendship services running and help the local Age UKs provide practical help such as food parcels by donating at www.ageuk.org.uk/coronaappeal. • KEEP IN TOUCH: phone your older relatives and friends to ask what they need – set up a rota with family and friends to make sure someone is regularly checking on them. • LEND A HAND: if you’re feeling well, offer to pick up shopping for an older neighbour. Remember that when you offer to go to the shops and when you drop off any shopping, you need to knock on the door and step 2 metres back first. Leave any bags on the doorstep making sure they safely receive them.

“

As a country we are all facing a terrible, invisible threat and it is older people who are at the greatest risk. We understand and support the need for our older population to stay safe by remaining at home – but this has huge implications for everyone, especially those who are already struggling to cope and who are very much on their own.

To find out how you can be a good neighbour to older people visit www.ageuk.org.uk/neighbourly

The reality is that in the weeks and months ahead older people are going to need Age UK in huge numbers, and to an extent we have never seen before. We are determined to rise to the challenge and be there – to provide comfort, hope and practical support. But we can only do it if we have the funds that it will take. This is why we are reaching out today and launching this appeal. My message to everyone is please help us to help our older people through donating to this appeal – together we can make a big difference and help them pull through.

LOCAL MP OPENS BARNSLEY BREWERY TAP Jolly Boys’ Brewery celebrate the opening of their Brewery Tap in Barnsley town centre. The Jolly Tap on the Arcade opened have been trading since July last year. They had their grand opening on Saturday 15th February. MP for Barnsley Central, Dan Jarvis pulled a pint to mark the moment. Jolly Boys’ Brewery has been brewing out of Redbrook since 2016 and are quickly gaining a reputation for brewing great real ale. Their core range of ales is proving popular. Barnsley resident Phil said

“

“

I’ve been drinking bitter for over 40 years and the Jolly Yorkshire Bitter is my personal favourite. It is easy drinking and has subtle flavours. The beer in this town is definitely on the up.

Bar Manager Steph added “Jolly Collier Porter is our best seller right now. Dark beer lovers are very positive about the porter. The Yorkshire Pale Ale has a cult following. That is our regular USA inspired beer and it sells really well”. A spokesperson for the Jolly Boys’ introduced Dan Jarvis and said a few words. He thanked various people including the Bar manager and her staff. Nailmaker Brewery and Barnsley CAMRA. And the people who have become customers and made a ‘positive choice to support a local producer and independent business’.

A perfect pint of Jolly Collier Porter

The British high street has been struggling in recent times and he summed up where he felt it had begun to go wrong. “In the 1980s shopping became a leisure activity for many and during that time our town centres became very similar. They began to lose their individual character as independent businesses were often unable to compete with the national chains. The large chains expanded into our towns and gradually independents called it a day. However, in recent years the bigger chains are contracting, shrinking or consolidating as they themselves are undermined by online businesses. Barnsley town centre has been particularly undermined. Barnsley has suffered what economists would call leakage. That means people living in the town, all too often spending their money elsewhere. Put simply, they spend their money on essentials, luxury goods and leisure elsewhere”.

He referred to the new development in town centre by saying “it is a positive leap of faith as is opening our brewery tap”. Calling to the residents of Barnsley “we will get the town centre that we deserve. If we choose to spend more of our time and hard-earned money where we live our town will go from strength to strength. There are enough people living in Barnsley to making this town a thriving place. For any town to thrive in the next 50 years it needs a healthy mix of residential, retail, leisure, historical, day and night-time businesses, household names and independents”. Jolly Boys’ Brewery is one of Barnsley’s many artisan producers. Producers who care first and foremost about Barnsley and celebrating being part of this great town. Regeneration of a town centre begins by residents spending locally. And the Jolly Tap on the Arcade is a great place to start. I’ll drink to that!

BARNSLEY TOWN’S MOST INSTAGRAMABLE LOCATIONS! with Becca Butcher Hi everyone! This article is going to be a little bit niche and aimed towards people who love a good selfie, latte art or colourful wall (like me!) We’re currently living in the age of social media.. Everyone seems to be using Instagram, YouTube, TikTok or whatever else is out there and that’s amazing! People now have a way to express themselves, no longer just though their clothes or taste in music, but through the content that they can create right at their fingertips with their devices! Sure there’s a lot of negatives too and all these new apps and trends can be confusing (I’m young and even I don’t understand a lot of this new stuff! Vine is now Byte, Snap streaks are apparently super important, everyone seems to know the “Renegade Dance”, memes are rampant and #isoverparty is always trending???) it’s a big scary internet world full of DMs and Retweets or Instagram story stickers and I for one think it’s beautiful!

I was luckily born “back int’ day” before all of this social media stuff, but not that far back int’ day when apparently everyone and their cat worked “down the pit” and had only sticks to play with. There are people being born right now who will never know a time before social media! Crazy to think about right? But not necessarily a bad thing. Social media has opened so many doors for people of all ages to find themselves and to find like-minded people. It helps people find new styles, music, games, creative outlets, talents, but usually most popularly new places to visit or eat. A lot of people’s travel and food choices are now based around which place looks the best in their photographs or where their favourite influencers are posting on Instagram and that isn’t always a bad thing.. I believe that if people are feeling positive about how they look and want to get their creativity flowing by dressing up and posing for pictures, setting up a nicely decorated scene to photograph their food or creating interesting video content that isn’t hurting or obstructing anyone else then that can often reduce mental illness and even count as experience for potential future creative careers! (Based on my own personal experiences as well as those of the many people that I’ve met in this industry) I’ve been doing Instagram for a few years now and in the past I often had to travel out of Barnsley town centre to find more photogenic locations as the town was a little bit dull, but in the past few recent years so many new places have been built in Barnsley town centre that are a creative’s dream! So in this article, in no particular order I’m going to show you guys my top 4 Instagramable locations in town which are perfect for your all your photography needs (There are plenty more places too that didn’t make the list and plenty more currently being built too so make sure you explore the town to find your own little gems!)

1. Old George - Market Hill. Inside this cafe, right at the back is an indoor gardenthemed seating area with fake grass, a bright light roof and most importantly the prettiest coffee designs as well as hot + cold foods that look too beautiful to eat. They’re also doing their part for the planet by using only compostable take-out ware, glass bottles and potato starch straws! And now have a pay-it-forward scheme where customers can pay money or points onto a voucher which can be redeemed by others if they are in need.

2. Coffee Boy - Glassworks. Coffee Boy is the new cafe on the scene, with its minimalistic decor, bright white tiles against dark walls, wooden furniture and plants, it’s an Instagram lovers dream! The big surrounding windows and high roof makes for a lot of bright light if that’s your preferred aesthetic. Here you can buy drinks, food, and health smoothies (They also do an amazing Peach Iced Tea, my favourite in the whole town!) and they have a wide range of colours for their reusable cups to encourage less waste! It’s a perfect spot for working, meeting with friends or taking photos pretending that you’re doing both those things for “the ‘gram”... We’ve all done it! Or at least, I have...

4. Estabulo - Regent Street. Located close to the bus station, Estabulo is a restaurant with multiple locations around Yorkshire! They serve a authentic Brazilian Rodizio food and bring each selection of meat to your table, just flip over the little green and red disk on your table to let the servers know if you’re ready for more! They now have this beautiful flower wall and giant mirror near the entrance which is AMAZING for full-length outfit photos!

3. The Civic Hansen Street. The Civic itself is a culture hub full of art, shows, events, music, and even Kylie Minogue visited here last year! But outside the building is a bright wall covered in colours, big enough to fit multiple people in for those oh-so important group selfies. It’s nice to have something like this in the town as it brings a pop of colour to the area and shows the town’s fun side. I’d personally love to see more of these kind of giant art murals around the town.

There’s still so many new places popping up in town even as I’m writing this so no doubt I’ll be back with another list soon but for now I’m on the lookout for my next favourite 4 locations! Feel free to suggest and recommend your favourite Barnsley locations over on my Instagram @beccabutcherx. The focus was to be more visible and engaging with people and breaking down barriers that it’s ok “not to be okay” and that talking isn’t a sign of weakness but helps with wellbeing.

As our Branch is relatively small and entirely ran on volunteers, this will take massive commitment from all at Barnsley Samaritans but one we are prepared to do for the Health and Well-being of the Barnsley community. Our aim is to create and grow partnerships with other local charities so they may also attend these events to offer even more support for the community. To date Barnsley Samaritans have held awareness events at local Health Clubs like Bannatynes and JD Gym, BPL Metrodome with more planned .Samaritans are working more closely with local football clubs in the region like Penistone Church FC, Worsborough Bridge FC, Wombwell Town, Wombwell Main and Dodworth MWFC where Samaritans have supplied pitch side banners and plan to hold awareness marquees whenever possible at different clubs to raise awareness with not only their presence but by supplying each team with Samaritans t-shirts to warm up before kick-off to further raise more awareness. Our next aim is also to target Cricket grounds in the region with Darfield CC already on board and displaying Samaritans banners at their ground with Rugby and Golf Courses to follow. We also have our teams in Athletics wearing our T-shirts and raising awareness.

‘SAMMY’

THE SAMARITAN As well as targeting men’s health between 25-50 Barnsley Samaritans are also looking at more younger age groups. Sammy has been introduced to branch to be a link with younger children to promote better mental wellbeing and encouraging better communications. Sammy has already been requested at the new lightbox library as well as other local libraries where he will be hosting “Sammy’s Story Corner” where stories around wellbeing and other health topics will be read. Sammy will also be attending local football matches participating in penalty shoot outs, promoting healthy lifestyles and other awareness activities

GPS, HOSPITALS, HEALTH CENTRES AND OTHER BUSINESS PROJECT Another project which is about to go live is supplying everywhere in the Barnsley area with Samaritan cards and holder to be displayed on counters across the borough. With these being subtle and small the hope is that people will see them and take one to call for support.

TAKE A LOOK AT ALL THE ADORABLE BABY ANIMALS OUR STAFF ARE TAKING CARE OF While most of the nation is holed up at home following Government guidance to socially distance and self-isolate, it seems wildlife didn’t get the memo. Our staff have been busy rescuing and caring for lots of baby animals in need of a helping hand. Here are just some of the babies our dedicated staff are currently taking care of.

BABY BUNNY FOUND ALONE This tiny baby bunny was found thin and dehydrated alone in Bridgend, Wales, on 15 March. Animal collection officer Ellie West collected the little rabbit and took her in for specialist care. Ellie said: “She’s too young to be away from mum so we put her in an incubator to warm her up and have been hand-rearing her. She started to feel much better with a full tummy! Once she’s old enough we’ll release her back into the wild.” Wildlife care assistants at West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton, Somerset, are also hand rearing four baby bunnies who arrived on 14 March after being found in a nearby field inside a bale feeder by a farmer who was changing the hay.

BABY TAWNY OWLS A pair of baby tawny owls were found by a worker at Wigan Waste Water Treatment Works in Ormskirk, Lancashire, on 13 March and our animal collection officer Heather Cook went to collect them. She said: “These gorgeous owlets were small and very young. While it’s normal for young tawny owls to explore their surroundings I was quite worried about them. One in particular was not looking too good, so I took them to a local vet to be checked over.”

The fluffy pair is now being cared for by staff at Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Cheshire. Once they’re old enough they’ll be released back into the wild.

BABY WOOD MICE Eight tiny baby wood mice were found in a second-hand rabbit hutch someone had bought. When they went to set the hutch up in their garden in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, they found the nest with the baby mice inside. As they had no idea where the mother was they called us for help and inspector Kim Greaves collected them. Her colleague, Liz Braidley, took them in and handreared them until they were moved to Stapeley Grange. Liz said: “They’re very lucky to have been found and are extremely lucky to survive without their mum.”

ORPHANED FOX CUBS Two fox cubs needed help from us after being found with no sign of their mums. One arrived at Putney Animal Hospital, in London, on 6 March having been found crying alone in a garden in Twickenham. Vet Michael Lazaris, who helped to hand rear the tiny cub, said: “The member of the public had spotted the cub in the garden and heard her crying. After monitoring her for several hours and seeing no sign of mum, they came to us for help. We’ve been hand-rearing her but she’s now moved to The Fox Project who will rehabilitate her until she’s ready for release.” Animal collection officer Louis Horton collected a second fox cub from Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, on Thursday 19 March. He said: “The caller had found the oneweek-old cub the previous day and had been handrearing him believing he was a kitten! When a friend pointed out he was a fox cub she called us for help. I went to collect little Franklin and took him to Wildlife Aid who will integrate him with a group of other cubs.”

OUR RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS Our Chief Executive Delyth Morgan outlines how Breast Cancer Now will continue to support people affected by breast cancer during the coronavirus outbreak. For over 40 years, Breast Cancer Now, our supporters and the communities we serve have faced many challenges, big and small. And we have come through them all by supporting each other and working together. Today, we face one of our greatest challenges yet. The coronavirus outbreak represents an unprecedented situation for all of us, but in particular, it will be an extremely difficult and uncertain time for people affected by breast cancer. We know that so many people will be worried about their risk of infection or about the impact the outbreak may have on their treatment. Whether this affects you or someone you know, we want to reassure you that we are here and we will do everything we can to support anyone affected by breast cancer in the coming months. Now, more than ever, the entire Breast Cancer Now team is working tirelessly to deliver for the people who need us. This is only possible through the dedication of our supporters and colleagues and I would like to say a huge thank you for your loyalty and understanding during these exceptional times.

HOWEVER EVENTS UNFOLD, WE ARE HERE • All of our colleagues have been working from home for the past week, including our Helpline team, who have worked remotely for the first time ever to ensure patients can continue to reach us for information and support in these uncertain times. • Our Helpline number is 0808 800 6000 and our specialist nurses are currently available from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. If you need someone to talk to, we are just at the end of the phone. • If you have received treatment for breast cancer and are concerned about coronavirus, please visit https://breastcancernow.org/about-us/media/ statements/advice-coronavirus-people-cancer. We will be updating this information regularly as further expert advice from the NHS is made available.

• While, regrettably, we have suspended our face-to-face services in line with government advice, our Helpline, Ask our Nurses, Someone Like Me and online Forum support services are still running as normal and we are working hard to develop new digital solutions to ensure anyone affected by breast cancer can still get the support they need. • We are also working together as a coalition of UK cancer charities to support patients and their needs through this rapidly unfolding challenge, and to provide clear, timely and trustworthy information. • With most workplaces now closing, our scientists are also working to establish ways to take our world-class breast cancer research forward outside of the lab, to ensure that we do not lose momentum and that research progress does not stall.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW, MORE THAN EVER The coronavirus outbreak presents the greatest challenge to date, not only to our 2050 vision, but to the NHS’s ability to ensure everyone diagnosed with breast cancer gets the treatment and support they need. We need to act now and we will only be able to tackle this together. The latest government guidance and need for social distancing will undoubtedly have a significant impact on our fundraising income, as it will across the whole charity sector. I want to reassure you that we are looking incredibly carefully at how we can tackle the impact that coronavirus will have on our charity as we can be sure those affected by breast cancer need support now more than ever. In the coming weeks we will be sharing more information about what we are doing to respond to the crisis, and if there is anything we can do to support you at this time, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Take care and a big thank you from us all. It’s the kindness and support that we give to each other that will help us get through these unprecedented times. Delyth Morgan and the Breast Cancer Now team
