Duncan Owen-Elmer from Worsborough has just celebrated raised £53,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, enough to fund a Macmillan Nurse for a year. Duncan’s volunteering journey started with Macmillan three years ago. After experiencing the bereavement of his first wife, due to cancer, Duncan wanted to give something back to the charity and show his appreciation. Duncan said: “Macmillan Nurses supported us whilst my first wife was diagnosed with a brain tumour. During this time, the nurses were absolutely fantastic. “They even supported us after my wife passed away. They helped our two young daughters as well as myself and I can’t thank them enough. “I’m doing this to help other people have the same support as we had” Duncan started collecting at supermarkets and various stores around Barnsley. He is very committed and is out in the community up to six days a week. Duncan is easily spotted, wearing his bright green curly wig! 18 months ago, Duncan started his appeal to raise £53,000 by 2020 and he’s already achieved it!

Huge success for Barnsley’s very own Jolly Green Giant Morning taking place on Friday 27th September. Anyone can take part in coffee morning, a school, workplace, community group. Everyone loves a drink, some cake and a natter! Anyone can take part in coffee morning, like sisters, Anna Barron and Sarah Allam who have organised a coffee morning each year since 2010. They started to hold a coffee morning in memory of Anna’s father-in-law Graham Barron who died from cancer at just 69. Their coffee morning has grown each year and have raised in total almost £13,000! This year’s coffee morning is booked for Saturday 5th October at Higham Methodist Church. Get involved

“We rely on 98% on donations from the general public so without people like Duncan, Anna and Sarah we wouldn’t be here as a charity to help those who need us.”

Bad Manners play Sheffield Foundry on Saturday 12th October 2019!
Bad Manners are an English Second Wave (2 Tone) ska revival band. They quickly became the novelty favourites of the fad through their bald, enormous-bodied frontman's on-stage antics, earning early exposure through their Top of The Pops TV exploits and an appearance in the live film documentary, Dance Craze. Fronted by Buster Bloodvessel (born Douglas Trendle), the band was formed in 1976 while the
members were together at Woodberry Down Comprehensive School near Manor House, North London. They were at their most popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s, during a period when other ska revival bands, such as Madness and The Specials and The Selecter, filled the charts. Bad Manners spent 111 weeks in the UK Singles Chart between 1980 and 1983. After becoming popular in London, Bad Manners signed to Magnet Records in 1980 for a six figure sum, and then
became more well known. Some of Bad Manners' more notable hits include "My Girl Lollipop", "Lip Up Fatty", "Ne Ne Na Na Na Na Nu Nu", "Lorraine", "Just A Feeling", "Walking In The Sunshine", "Can Can" and
"Special Brew". One of the main reasons for their notoriety was their outlandish huge-tongued and shaven-headed frontman, Buster Bloodvessel. His manic exploits got them banned
from the British BBC TV chart show Top of the Pops. The band was also banned from Italian TV after Bloodvessel mooned a concert audience, after being told that the Pope was watching on TV.

Local brewery says bitter is here to stay Barnsley brewery are to brew their take on Yorkshire bitter throughout the year and they have introduced a seasonal pale ale as demand for real ale grows. Jolly Boys’ Brewery’s Jolly Yorkshire Bitter has gone down a treat with regulars in Barnsley and Wakefield. The brewery manager reports “sales through our brewery tap in Wakefield have been steadily increasing and since we opened the Jolly tap on the Arcade in Barnsley we have been overwhelmed by the demand for our Yorkshire Bitter”. Around seventy-five percent of Jolly Boys’ Brewery cask sales have been blonde or pale style beers in recent years. “we
have found that bitter drinkers are very brand loyal so it is really challenging to get on a bar with a bitter when you are a relatively new brewery. Some landlords and landladies are reluctant to rotate bitters whereas they will be more innovative on the other hand pumps. That said, when the general public have got their hands on our Jolly Yorkshire Bitter they have been very complimentary. Many bitter drinkers have expressed frustration that in many pubs it is difficult to enjoy a local, hand crafted bitter. We recognise the growing demand for innovative hoppy beers, we also think it is important to produce high quality traditional ales”.
The brewery manager designs the recipes with his brother and they set out to brew a traditional Yorkshire bitter and tasted well over fifty bitters before they put pen to paper. “Our aim was to create a beer that our grandad and his work mates would have enjoyed after a day toiling underground. We decided that 3.8% ABV was just right for a session beer. We aimed for a wellbalanced easy drinking ale and that we are pleased with the results. It has the complexities that can only be achieved through a meticulous mashing process. It is our hope that as more customers try the bitter in our taps, free-to-trade landladies and landlords will be more confident to bring
Jolly Yorkshire Bitter to their regulars as our reputation for high-quality grows”. Jolly Boys’ brew a core British range of ale and all of their hand-pump clips have a little joke or “jolly” in the in the background. The Jolly blonde, Jolly Collier Porter and Jolly Yorkshire Bitter are ever-present and consistent. They have developed range more United States in style. “We have a rotating range of more citrusy and hoppy ales. The YPA or Yorkshire Pale Ale has developed a cult following and is brewed regularly. Jolly Cascade is our citrusy blonde and most recently The Jolly Rancher is our most citrusy, hoppy and US style session
ale to date. That sold out before we brewed it and the customer feedback been very positive”. As we chatted about beers here to stay and beers in the design stage. Hops from around to world and malted barley from Castleford. Barnsley of a bygone era, the here and now and the future. It feels uplifting to hear these Jolly Boys and their general optimism. The news from the brewery is that the Jolly Boys are very serious about beer.

Hi everyone! I hope you all enjoyed my column last month. I love being able to have a good chat to you all about bits and bobs. This month, I want to bring up a topic that just isn’t spoken about enough. Maybe it’s a bit taboo, maybe it just doesn’t get enough coverage, maybe it isn’t covered right? These days, kids as young as 5 have mobile phones which, to me, is terrifying! I got my first mobile phone when I started high school, for safety more than anything, but it certainly didn’t have any fancy apps or accessories like they do now. I’m not going to lie, iPhones impress me. The apps, the camera, the way you can talk to people in 3 different places! But some apps become a trend with the kids quite quickly, with parents not knowing much about it. One particular app I know a few of my younger family members have is TikTok, a video sharing app. It sounds innocent and fun, but this app allows you to post videos to the public, message others and send each other ‘credits’ or real money. To me, this is absolutely horrifying. I’m all for kids playing around with phones and making silly videos, wanting to show their friends. I’m also all up for app companies making money…I mean we all need some kind of income! But surely there are tweaks these apps can do to allow age barriers and make them safer for younger children. I’ve made a little list of some popular apps kids are loving these days below, just so you can be aware that if your younger family members have a mobile phone, they may have one or a few of these apps. I know this is slightly different to my usual upbeat, positive column, but there’s so many things these days we have to be aware of to keep children safe. I’d rather try to help whenever I can! I look forward to seeing you all again next time, with a hopefully more cheery column!

Centrepoint Celebrates Inaugural King’s Cup Success Centrepoint, the UK’s leading charity for homeless young people, has operated in Barnsley since 2017, supporting homeless 16-25 year olds in the area. Each young person the charity works with receives the full suite of Centrepoint services – mental health support, healthy living, life skills training, education and employability support. Centrepoint research shows the significant scale of youth homelessness in the UK, with over 100,000 young people approaching their council because they were homeless or at risk of homelessness; 7,000 in Yorkshire and Humberside alone. On the 9th of August the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted the inaugural regatta The King’s Cup to raise awareness and funds for eight of Their Royal Highnesses’ patronages including Centrepoint. Invited along to the event was former Centrepoint resident Gareth and his keyworker Stephen who met at the Barnsley services. Gareth is a care leaver who after university found himself homeless. He is now a Centrepoint resident on floating support and is passionate about sport, he looking forward to starting a FA coaching course shortly with support
from Centrepoint’s bursary. When Gareth was little, his mum and dad were in an abusive relationship. They split up when he was seven and they moved out of the area. Due to the trauma, Gareth’s mum was in a fragile mental state. She also had Addison’s disease as well as diabetes and she struggled to manage her condition. This meant she would end up in hospital a lot, sometimes every week. Gareth quickly learnt how to look after himself. Fortunately for Gareth, he had some really inspiring teachers at school that encouraged him, especially his PE teachers. Gareth said: “They would always listen to me and check I was OK. I learned techniques to manage stress and vent my anger through sport. That’s when I began to think about PE and sport as a career,” “In the future, I want to support young people who’ve been through similar things to what I’ve been through, and I think that having my own experience will help me relate to them.” This was not the first time Gareth had been close to their Royal Highnesses as he had also met them when they came to Barnsley to open the Andy Norman Learning Hub
which provides vital support to young people across Barnsley. Gareth’s keyworker Stephen understands what it’s like to be young and homeless; he lived in a hostel for 3 years from the age of 17. He now works as a supported housing officer in one of our Barnsley services. Stephen’s own personal experience of living in hostels means he is able to empathise with the young people he works with. Stephen said: “After fighting obstacles life threw at me, I finally undertook private therapy at the age of 23 and since then have not drank or taken drugs. I am now fully sober. and now use my dark past and proactive life skills to help benefit
the young people I work with on a day to day basis, showcasing that change is positive and can be achieved no matter how dark your past may be. I love what I do and wouldn’t change a moment in my life for the world, as it is made me who I am today.” “The Kings Cup was an extraordinary experience, as I got to meet John Bishop! And also got to meet other celebrities such as Bear Grylls, Prince William and Kate. I also showcased what Centrepoint do on a day to day basis to all other external service providers, hoping we can all work together to better control youth homelessness as a whole within the UK.” Funds raised by the
Kings Cup will help support the more than 15,000 homeless 16-25 year olds who
Centrepoint work with to help into a job and a home each year.

Barnsley College awarded official Digital Schoolhouse status by UK computing initiative Barnsley College is pleased to announce an innovative partnership with Digital Schoolhouse (DSH) together with Nintendo UK, which will offer primary school pupils the chance to develop their computing skills. DSH is a not-for-profit programme delivered by the UK games industry trade body Ukie, which uses play-based learning, such as esports (electronic sports), to engage the next generation of pupils and teachers with the Computing curriculum. The College’s Sport department shares the same vision and has invested in a state-of-the-art Esports Arena to help prepare young people for the future digital world. In addition, as a certified Digital Schoolhouse, the College’s Esports students have the opportunity to take The sky’s the limit for students and staff at the RNN Group after the announcement of a new partnership with global technology firms Google Education and C-Learning. RNN Group will soon benefit from unlimited cloud storage, along with seamless video communications, world leading artificial intelligence, accessibility and inclusion apps and instant access to college resources on any device from any location. The education and training provider will be able to fully prepare its learners for the modern digital workplace after moving to the Google GSuite for Education platform. The RNN Group provides further and higher education courses, apprenticeships and training solutions at Rotherham College, North Notts College, Dearne Valley College and the new University Centre Rotherham. Working as part of an ‘FE Future Colleges Programme’, RNN Group academic staff will be using the latest leading technologies from

It’s got to be the sweetest time to bake with fresh (sometimes free) fruits. Neighbours and friends usually have a glut of produce and will love to give or swap bags of little fruity gems. This can be a family production, with all the washing, peeling, cutting,
mixing, or even some alone time to gently ease yourself into Autumn. The whole process of picking and preparing is something to bring sunshine to your soul on those chillier days. Nothing beats homemade dessert, especially if for the most part it’s free! So what’s your favourite? Apple pie, blackberry crumble, plum pudding? Do you add any amazing twists? I remember as a little girl, my mother making an ‘Apple Charlotte’- sliced apples, stale bread and some kind of creamy juice- the tang of the apples and crunch of the breadcrumbs with the sweet liquid, it still makes my mouth water just imagining it! Try this simple recipe, but jazz it up with your own unique additions and flavours.
Apple Crumble - 1.5kg of apples; Bramley or any cooking variety are best, or mix them with whatever apples you have. - 100g of sugar; Caster or Demerera - 50g of butter; Margarine or your own choice - 100g of plain flour 1. Preheat oven to 200.c 2. Peel and core apples, chop into slices or chunks 3. Place apples in a saucepan with a little water and sugar (alternatively use fizzy lemonade or flavoured juice) 4. Rub together flour and butter until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add sugar and mix together. 5. Once apples begin to soften, remove from heat and place in your preferred baking dish. 6. Sprinkle over your crumble topping (muesli is a good alternative) 7. Bake for around 25-30 minutes and allow to cool. Best eaten warm with your choice of custard, cream or ice cream. Well done to our young uns A massive well done from everyone at Together and Local who received their GCSE and A level results at the end of August! There were some cracking results in Barnsley for A levels – with a stunning 99.3 per cent pass rate, way higher than the national average of 97.6 per cent. Penistone Grammar School had 100 per cent of its students achieving at least one A* to E pass and 99 per cent achieving two or
JD Sports opening soon I was walking in Tarn centre earlier this month and was over moon to see JD Sports is opening soon on Cheapside. I’ll never be short of fancy clobber when that opens its doors! I’ve heard a couple of interesting names being dropped for the new look Tarn centre. We’re all crying out for some more clothes shops and restaurants, so hopefully we’ll find out who’s coming soon enough. I was out in market the other week and one of the traders was telling me that new businesses are coming to Market Kitchen where
the market cafes are before the end of September. I’ve heard that Dolly’s Desserts (used to be Ice Queenz) will be opening up along with a new coffee shop. Sounds cracking to me, I love an ice cream and a quality coffee! I’ll be bouncing off walls! Get in my belly! Av said it before and I’ll say it again – we might have a few problems in our Tarn centre, but it’s well on the up. I was in Donny the other day and I have to say, it’s not a patch on what we’ve got going on in Barnsley! We’ve summat to be proud of!
Row over housing plans There’s more trouble brewing over new housing plans in Tarn! The council wants to build around 1700 new homes on green belt land near Pogmoor, Higham, Gawber and Barugh Green. Plans also include a new primary school and employment land. The council have said they’ll talk to local residents about it and they can help shape the plans – but I’m divided whether it’s a good thing or not. I mean, I’m wanting to move house at the minute and tha can never be
short of a good house to buy! So the more options the better. Employment land means more jobs, which means more folk earning a living, which can’t be a bad thing! But on flip side, it means a loss of green belt land, more roadworks and probably more congestion with more homes in the area. And if you travel around there at rush hour, you’ll know it’s not easiest place to get through! Be interesting to see how this one plays out – we might have another Penny Pie Park on our hands!

Dancing Town a huge success Did tha get chance to get over to Dancing Town in Tarn centre last month? If tha didn’t, tha missed a reyt treat! It was over 10 days in Mandela Gardens and at the new library. They had all sorts, including a day of Northern Soul (tha should have seen me kicking, I nearly pulled me hamstring!) a 90s night, 80s night (which I bloody missed, I was gutted cos heard it was buzzing) and loads of west end workshops. It even attracted star names in
George Sampson (who won Britain’s Got Talent) and our own ballet superstar Tala Lee-Turton, who made a special guest appearance. It’s brilliant to see events like that come to Tarn. It was mostly free, got everyone from young kids to the older generation up dancing, and even got me doing a bit, and I can’t dance for toffee! Hopefully, it will be back next year.
Best wishes to Big Mac Finally, I just wanna say best wishes to former Barnsley FC defender Angus MacDonald. Big Mac, who now plays for Hull, has sadly been diagnosed with bowel cancer. A horrible disease. Angus was great for Tarn – he was a real presence, gave it 100 per cent every game and had a bit of quality about him too. He’s a top fella and I wanna wish him the very best in his battle against the disease. I’m sure football fans across Barnsley will say the same. Good luck, lad!

The downside was, I also had to clean it up every night!” You can expect similarly brilliant comic moments from Whitehall’s new show, Stood Up, which is touring the UK and Ireland this autumn – his biggest such tour ever. Justly feted for his superb work on television, the comedian is, if anything, even more at home in the live arena. Whitehall is a dazzlingly funny stand-up. Often making himself the butt of
his jokes, he generates wave upon wave of laughter in the auditorium. But be warned, he has a really loyal following, and his shows sell-out very rapidly - with many of the original dates already sold out and additional dates added to cater to demand, so you are advised to book early. It is very easy to see why he is perhaps the best loved comedian in the country. That is not just my opinion. Newspaper critics have been queueing up to pay tribute to Whitehall’s stand-up. The Times asserts that, “If you’re going to do arena comedy, this is how to do it”, while the Daily Telegraph declares that, “Jack Whitehall's refusal to grow up is just what we
need right now.”. Meanwhile, the Evening Standard enthuses that Whitehall delivers what, “may well be the most spectacular arena stand-up show ever.” You will no doubt be very pleased to hear that Whitehall is just as compelling off stage. In person, he combines wit and warmth in the most magnetic fashion, and it is a sheer delight to spend an hour in his company. It is like being treated to a command performance – to an audience of one. Having been away from the stand-up arena for a while making hit movies and TV shows, Whitehall is very happy to be back doing what he adores above all

It’s so exciting to be able to go on and get an instant reaction from the audience. I also love the fact that anything can happen – it is different every single night. You can change things on the spur of the moment. You’re totally in control.” Whitehall, who has also starred in such lauded TV shows as Decline & Fall, Fresh Meat, Bad Education, Backchat and A League of Their Own (which received a BAFTA Award in 2014 for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme), continues that, “It’s great making film and TV and writing scripts. But often you wait months before it goes out. “There is something so appealing about being able to get up on stage in front of an audience and have a very authentic, instantaneous and organic experience with them. I love that element of stand-up. When you go away and do writing and acting, you miss that. You get the itch to return to stand-up. It’s a bug. I’d find it very hard ever to quit it. I’ll always come back to it. It’s my first love.”
The other terrific aspect of Whitehall’s stand-up is that he thrives on creating a show with a capital S. He is always determined to give his audience wonderful value for money. The comedian, widely celebrated for the travelogue series, Travels With My Father, which returns to Netflix for a new series in September,

observes that,: “Doing an arena show, you have to make it feel like it belongs in an arena. So you have to do stuff that could only happen in an arena. I really like big production values. You want put on a proper show in an arena. Musicians do it, so why shouldn’t comedians? “If people come to arena shows, they have made an effort. They have paid money for the tickets and got a babysitter, so you want to give them a real show. I love a bit of a fanfare and throwing in a few surprises that make it feel like a big event. It’s the musical-theatre fan inside me. How close is that fan to the surface? He’s out and proud now! You have to embrace it.” It is fair to say, however, that Whitehall’s production values do not always go according to plan. When they do go wrong, though, it simply adds to the hilarity of the evening. Remember the incontinent horse? The stand-up, who has hosted The BRIT Awards for the last
two years, welcomes such moments of unscripted comedy. “It’s great when something unexpected happens in the moment. My stage caught fire in Leeds once, and that suddenly became the show. I have pyrotechnics on stage because I always try to make my shows like a Beyonce gig. “But that night in Leeds the pyrotechnics went off in the wrong direction and part of the stage caught fire. The audience were laughing so hard because they thought it was part of the show. They didn’t know that something had gone seriously wrong and that I was in peril. But they were just laughing away, totally oblivious to that.” “At first, I didn’t even realise what was going on because I had my back to the fire. Suddenly, the stage manager rushed on stage, grabbed me and dragged me off. I said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ He replied, ‘Look, the stage is on fire!’ It was all quite dramatic, but the audience really loved it.” Whitehall, who next year will be starring opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt in Disney blockbuster movie, Jungle Cruise, proceeds to
reveal what subjects he will be addressing in Stood Up. “You’re always reflecting on what’s going on in your life. I’ve been travelling a lot with my dad recently, so I'll be talking about going around the world with him. “I’ll be discussing stuff about being in America, too, and how different I find that from the UK. I’ll also be talking about the sensitivity of the world at the moment and how it is very easy to cause offence and end up in trouble. Skirting that line can be very difficult.” The stand-up also discloses that he may tackle the hottest topic in British politics at the moment: Brexit. “I’m trying to find some fun in Brexit, but it’s quite hard. It’s like a dirty word. The whole audience clenches up when you mention it. That’s a challenge in itself. How can you do Brexit material and make people laugh about it?” Whitehall will, of course, also be dreaming up another grand entrance for Stood Up. “This show will definitely have some party tricks. In my first arena show, I came on stage on a Segway, and then the next time it was a horse. So God knows how I’m going to top that!” Finally, what does Whitehall hope that audiences will take away from Stood Up? “I love to make my shows really fun and silly. On stage I like to create a lot of joy and silliness, as I think the world is a depressing enough place as it is. I hope my show will be a fun distraction. I will be trying to get people beaming as they leave the auditorium at the end of the evening. “We are living in troubled times. Without wishing to give what I do any higher meaning, I think it’s really good to be distracted and laugh like an idiot for two hours.”

Pumpkin Wizadry School Cannon Hall Farm 19-31 October Come to the Cannon Hall Farm Pumpkin Festival this October and have a magical experience as the farm invites young witches and wizards to join the fun of its Wizardry School. The Pumpkin Patch is returning to the farm once again and young witches and wizards will get to 'graduate' if they complete the challenges. Pat’s Garden September brings the gardener a multitude of jobs! Where to start? My garden has seen some dramatic changes over the last few weeks (so have my aching muscles!). August saw old fencing being replaced- such big spiders! Digging out long-lived bushes that had grown far beyond the size they should have (hence the aching muscles) and preparing ground for my collection of gathered and given seeds. The weather has confused some of my plants and trees too! My lovely purple magnolia which was covered with large blooms in Spring, has presented me with another show! Now, let’s talk weeds… However fast I dig them up, they reappear within days. Whatever dandelions are made of, I need some of their stamina! The roses have been resplendent this year, deadheading definitely keeps them strong and gives them the opportunity to show more of their blooms and
fragrances. One of my favourite flowers, I must admit, is the poppy. From the simple red with black centre and the emotions it provokes, to the big blousy flowers of the tall pinky purple pompoms, not forgetting the bright and cheerful Californian poppies of orange and yellow. My daughter gifted me some new ones this year- oriental poppy- the most brilliant sunshine orange I have ever seen! Aquiligea is another favourite in my garden. The subtle blues and pinks (even a white and yellow one sprung up!) give a gentle feeling in the borders. One plant that surpassed itself this year was our Canterbury Bell. After being moved to a new position, it absolutely blossomed, giving a long lasting show of delicate blue flowers on tall stems. Clearing some space in the garden has also allowed some freebies to grow, bless those little birds fertilizing the garden! A majestic show
of tiny Snapdragons sprang up amongst my roses. My little feathery friends also left a seed that has grown into a large plant that I’m not quite sure what it is yet! When I find out I will let you know… As you can probably guess, my garden is not a show garden. It’s seen many changes over the years, from an overgrown sea of grass with ditches and bumps, to child friendly plants and lawn that didn’t mind the odd football bouncing off it! To finding shady places for grandbabies to roam, and ‘rough’ bits to dig for treasures and plant their own seeds. And now a place for all the family to sit, relax, unwind and discuss the benefits and problem areas together. Some things

Yorkshire Psychotherapy A recent study by the Mental Health Foundation, Surviving or Thriving? The state of the UK’s mental health, on the mental wellbeing of Briton’s, found that 65% of the sample population have experienced mental health problems. More than a quarter (26%) have had a panic attack and 42% said they have had depression. Personally, I think that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Ok, I’m going to say it…life is tough. It never runs smoothly. We all suffer losses, difficult changes, traumas and are often very negative about ourselves. No wonder most of us struggle at times. I meet lots of people in the course of my work. The majority of people who walk through my door feel lost, ashamed that they are struggling and have had to access professional help. This is where the nation’s problems lie. If we could embrace mental health
as something that affects us all, then maybe the stigma surrounding it would reduce. Maybe then, people would feel more confident in saying “I need help”, early on, before they sink into depression or struggle with anxiety symptoms. I have worked in the mental health field since 1994 (I can’t believe it’s that long!) and, I hope, have helped lots of people along the way. Over the years, I have had my own battles to face; traumas, relationship breakups, traumatic bereavements, work stressors and ultimately,
episodes of depression and anxiety. I have had therapy, to help me deal with these things, which has made me stronger, more empathetic to others difficulties and shaped who I am as a person and a therapist. I don’t know about you, but I can honestly say that I don’t see mental health difficulties as a sign of weakness at all. I see them as a sign of strength in a person. I like to think I’m a stronger person because of what I’ve been through and I hope, if you’re reading this, that you’ll recognise your own strength too.

Kevin Miller - looking back to his debut... 20 years ago! Remarkably more than two decades have passed since goalkeeper Kevin Miller joined Barnsley Football Club. It was August 1999 when the club embarked upon their Nationwide League Division One season - now the Sky Bet Championship in Miller’s debut season, having been recruited by Dave ‘Harry’ Bassett. “Being told it’s 20 years, it doesn’t seem that long, to be honest,” the former goalkeeper told Together & Local. “I remember speaking to the Chairman, the stadium was lovely and I had friends up there. I knew a lad called Jon Brown who was from Barnsley, we were together as kids at Exeter. I’d played there for Watford too so I knew a bit about the town. To be honest, I just wanted to play football and it felt right.” It was 10 years prior to his arrival in South Yorkshire that Miller turned professional with Exeter City, closer to his hometown of Falmouth, Cornwall, than this northern mining town. "I’ll be honest, I never had a problem with any of the Barnsley fans,” he said. "There were times when they would be frustrated but I never had a problem with that. Nobody goes into work deliberately to make mistakes. They pay their money and they’re entitled to their opinion. I’m sure there are people who thought I was rubbish, some who thought I was okay and some thought I was great. But I found the Yorkshire folk and Barnsley people really friendly and because I knew people from there anyway, I was always introduced to people. “I put Barnsley Football Club in the same bracket as Watford with how it was run,
the staff were great and there was nobody ‘above’ anybody else.” One such Barnsley man the epitome of the town - was Norman ‘Rimmo’ Rimmington. The ex-player, coach, physio and kitman worked in the laundry room when Miller arrived, and he certainly wouldn’t hold back on any criticism! “Rimmo was just as blunt as they come,” laughed Miller. “You’d go in on a Saturday and have a chat with him in the washroom. Being an ex-goalkeeper he always had extra time for me. Then you’d come in on the Monday and he’d say ‘You were rubbish at the weekend, weren’t you?’. That was how he was and, luckily, I could accept that. Rimmo was as good as gold. All the lads loved him. “He’d done so well for the football club. He’d been there for 50 odd years at the time and done every job there. That doesn’t happen at most clubs. It was always a family-run club and, to be fair, you wouldn’t want a clout off him because he had hands like I’d never seen!” Thankfully, there weren’t too many ‘rubbish’ games for Kevin in his debut season as he helped the club reach the Play-Off Final at Wembley in May 2000. Despite ending in a disappointing defeat to Ipswich Town, Miller stressed it’s important to remember the style of football and journey that got the team there in the first place. “We were so free-flowing, we conceded a few and our goals against wasn’t great but our philosophy was we’d
score more than the opposition. It made for entertaining football. My first game there we won 6-0 against Portsmouth and then a few days later we got thumped 6-1 by Ipswich! “David Tuttle said to the gaffer, “I always have a stinker here” and he said “If you’d have told me that before, I wouldn’t have played you!” But Harry always put things to bed and told us we were rubbish then we moved on. If we conceded two we’d try and score three or four, that’s the way we played. We had loads of goals in the team with Craig Hignett, Darren Barnard, Bruce Dyer, Neil Shipperley, Mike Sheron and Robin van der Laan chipping in. “I remember going to Fulham after drawing with them at home 0-0, but they battered us away on TV. They were a great side with Louis Saha up top and Luis Boa Morte in the side. It was a great side

to play in and Harry never had a go at us for being too adventurous. Hey always protected his players and wanted us to express ourselves. We had Geoff Thomas, Steve Chettle and ‘Morgs’ (Chris Morgan), so we had some good experience in there too. “We tried to play attractive football and I think we did. There definitely weren’t many nil-nil draws!” The season after Wembley may not have been as memorable for Barnsley fans as they finished in mid-table, but Miller collected the club’s ‘Player of the Year’ trophy which he still treasures to this day from a career he is also incredibly proud. By the end of his time in South Yorkshire, Miller had racked up 133 appearances in three years. “I’ve quite a good memory looking back at that achievement, but I can’t remember what I did last week!” he continued. “I have fond memories of my career and I got two awards out of my three seasons at Watford as well. It doesn’t mean the team has struggled if the ‘keeper has won the player of the year. “But I was more proud of where the team finished than getting

personal awards. I’d rather play well every week. I worked hard, trained my socks off and was always the first one out and last one in. I had to because I wasn’t a naturally gifted goalkeeper as I didn’t play in goal until I was 16. “I’ve worked hard, appreciated what I’d had because kids dream of doing what I did. Also, coming from Cornwall, for me there isn’t many Cornish footballers. My dad kept me grounded, he was a real stickler for that. I wouldn’t have thought when I signed my first terms at 18 that I would have another 18 years in the professional game.” These days he’s still putting his safe hands to good use as a Prison Custody Officer; where handling (people rather than a football) is a big part of his day-to-day role. “I only stopped playing at a decent level four years ago or so,” he continued. “I saw this job come up and it said you had to be calm under pressure, have good people skills and I thought ‘I’m quite interested in that’, so after a fiveweek training programme started in June. “I deal with all sorts of situations so it’s really interesting.”
