Springing back to life If the word houseplant conjures up images of a dusty, leggy Ficus tree leaning up in the corner of your local GP’s reception area, or a weeping Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata) mulched with its own dry brown leaves, then I’d like you to think again and see houseplants in a different light. Well-tended houseplants really are a thing of beauty and when arranged together can create a stunning visual effect. Plants add life to a house, and a sense of calm to a room. Sometimes I think we forget we’re just animals, and underestimate how important being surrounded by plants is for our wellbeing. Whilst it’s still too nippy to go outside for any length of time, it’s the perfect time of year to bring your houseplants out of their winter hibernation and add more to your collection. I’ll be the first to admit that up until a couple of years ago I wasn’t a huge fan of houseplants. I’d had a lot in my bedroom as a kid but in my early ‘home owning years’ my love for plants was outside, and tropicals relegated to my greenhouse (although we did always have a Sansevieria (mother-in-law’s tongue) in the corner of the dining room and a white orchid in the north facing bathroom window. I’ve recently noticed that there are

many retailers using greenery as part of their interior displays and I think this trend for ‘home greening’ will continue to rise over the coming years. Plants such as the Peace Lily is great for air purification and super easy to care for, flowering for months and months. During spring time, houseplants will be bursting back to life so here are my top tips for getting the most from them this year: • Remove dead and dying leaves • Clean the healthy leaves with leaf shine. I find cotton wool pads the best way to apply this, although dust can easily be removed using rain water at room temperature • Check for bugs – use either an organic insecticide spray or try systemic insecticide sticks, many of which have a combined slow release feed • Feed – add a weak houseplant fertiliser to your watering regime or apply every two weeks during March to September • Check the location – Houseplants which have been dormant and which were moved to a darker location for winter can now be moved back to a lighter position Remember to water when the compost is dry, but take care not to allow plants
to stand in water and remember that overwatering is the biggest killer of houseplants! Most houseplants like a constant temperature, hate draughts from doors and windows, and don’t like radiators or fires. The perfect place is on a table in a bright warm room and out of direct sunlight (unless it’s a cactus of course).

April Fools Comedy Festival back in Barnsley Laugh out loud comedy extravaganza features British comedy circuit’s top talent. Prepare for a month full of chuckles, giggles and belly laughs – because April Fools Comedy Festival is back in Barnsley next month. The popular comedy extravaganza – which will take place over the course of April – returns to Barnsley town centre once again, and this year’s show promises to be the most hilarious yet. Headline acts include popular Mock the Week regular Gary Delaney – who brings his show ‘Gagster’s Paradise’ to The Civic on Friday 26 April. Glenn Moore – also a Mock the Week star – will perform at town centre sports bar The Garrison on Wednesday 10 April, while talented comedienne Jessica Fostekew will appear at The Old Picture

House on Sunday 7 April. Other venues to feature shows include The Electric Theatre, Annie Murray’s Irish Bar, Zinc Bar and Jock’s Cavern. Meanwhile, comedian and Barnsley lad Toby Foster –famous for his BBC Radio Sheffield Breakfast Show and role in award-winning sitcom Phoenix Nights – will host The Last Laugh Comedy Club at The Civic on Saturday 27 April. Other acts scheduled to appear include Bilal Zafar, Grainne Maguire, Kate Fox, The Noise Next Door, Ben van der Velde, Abigoliah Schumaun, George Egg, Steve Bugeja and Seymour Mace. A Comedy Club 4 Kids will also be held at The Civic on Wednesday 17 April, with The Lamproom Theatre hosting The Odd Couple comedy
show over four nights between Tuesday 9 and Saturday April 13. The event will be presented by Love Barnsley Town Centre in association with Barnsley Council and XPO Logistics.

Some cracking news to finish off wi – ar Kes has been honoured with a new statue! The bronze statue – by local sculptor Graham Ibbeson – pays tribute to author of ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ - Hoyland lad Barry Hines. The book is reyt famous – but the film, made a year after the book’s release, put the Tarn on the map.

Barnsley businesses invited to sponsor major hospice fundraiser Barnsley Hospice is inviting local businesses to sponsor its biggest fundraising event of 2019. The Bubble Rush takes place at Locke Park on Sunday 21 July and opportunities are now available for Barnsley businesses to support the event in return for branding and promotion. Over 1500 people signed up for the 5km fun run last year, with even more expected to take part this summer. Four sponsorship packages are available at £1,000, which include logos on all literature, banners, runner t-shirts, social media posts and direct marketing. There is also the opportunity for on-site promotional activity on the day itself, including handing out flyers. Sponsors also receive ten places for the Bubble Rush
itself, with t-shirts and medals for all participants. Martyn Hughes, fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Our events are a vital source of income for the charity but because of the cost of staging them, they are simply not possible without the support of local businesses. “By securing sponsorship for this year’s Bubble Rush we can ensure that the costs of the event are covered so that every penny raised by participants goes straight to patient care.” Barnsley Hospice must raise £2.2m a year, in addition to £1.6m funding from the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Local photographer shortlisted for prestigious award
Barnsley photographer Collette Evans is in the running for a Federation of Small Businesses award. Collette, who runs Picture Perfect Photography, is shortlisted in the Scale-up Business category of the FSB’s Celebrating Business Awards 2019 regional final. The shortlisting recognises the growth the company has made over the last year, with corporate clients increasing from just two to 100, two extra staff joining the business and a move into new premises near Barnsley town centre. Collette, who has been in photography for 16 years, said: “The last year has just been amazing. Twelve months ago I was busy with wedding photography, but since then it really has gone up a gear and now the diary is full to bursting.”

As well as commercial and wedding photography, Picture Perfect Photography specialises in fitness photography, and is the recommended wedding photographer for South Yorkshire venues Wortley Hall and Aston Hall. One of the new members of staff that Collette has taken on is 16-year-old Alex Hollinworth, who is studying photography at Barnsley College. “He is the same age that I was when I first got interested in photography and I really like the idea of bringing people on in the industry,” said Collette. "I’ve also taken on a PA to cope with all the admin behind the scenes, and in the next 12 months I want to take on more staff, including other photographers, and move to a bigger studio.”
Collette, who is 31 and lives in Worsbrough, gained an HND in photography from Sheffield College, before working for a photographer in Barnsley and setting up Picture Perfect Photography in 2012. One of the main reasons for the business’s growth in the last year has been the introduction of a subscription scheme for corporate clients, who can pay monthly to have up-to-date photographs. “These days a company’s visual appearance is so important. Whether it’s your social media headshot or photographs of products for the website or a brochure; the first impression really matters in a world where people are making such quick decisions,” said Collette. If Collette is successful in the Yorkshire and Humber

STUdy centre welcomes new english teacher How time flies! With spring well and truly here, there’s a real buzz at Young Minds Matter. February half-term came and went in a blur as students enjoyed a whole host of academic and enrichment activities. Our ever-popular forensic science workshop was well-attended and there are plans for a more advanced version during the Easter break aimed at our older students. The workshops with our new art teacher went down a storm with students producing some fabulous pop art whilst the first of our beauty workshops was also a great success. Led by a qualified, experienced NVQ assessor, students learnt about the science behind
good nail care before experimenting with nail colour. With a range of standalone workshops and complete courses available, future workshops are sure to appeal to a wide range of students. Barnsley runners turn miles into money for hospice
Runners from Barnsley Harriers have been turning miles into money to raise over £2,000 for Barnsley Hospice. The funds were generated through the running club’s four Silkstone Shuffle trail races in 2018, with profit from entry fees and income from bake sales at the events going towards the total. A sponsored ‘beer mile’, which saw fundraisers drink a beer after every lap, brought in even more. Barnsley Harriers club members chose the hospice as their nominated charity for 2018. Chair Ian Meade, 69, of Church Street in Darton said: “My mum Vera Meade was cared for at the hospice in 2016 and had such fantastic care while she was there, so I was delighted the hospice was chosen when we decided which charity to support through the races. The enthusiasm and effort that members put into the fundraising last year was just brilliant, and it’s something we see time and again at the club.” The total of £2,386 has been put towards a major refurbishment of the hospice’s in-patient unit. Work is currently taking place to transform the ten bedrooms, en-suites, and main bathroom. A designated overnight stay facility will be available
for family members to use as and when needed. “Although the care that my mum received was fantastic, I did think the rooms looked a bit dated and tired,” said Ian, who visited the hospice with club members to present the cheque. “This was a good opportunity to put some money towards the campaign to freshen them up. I’m very pleased we’ve been able to help.” Work to transform patient bedrooms began in October and will be fully completed by the spring, with work taking place over four phases to allow in-patient unit services to continue. Janet O’Hara, grants, trusts and legacies fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, added: “We’re really grateful to the Barnsley Harriers for their dedication to raising money throughout last year and we’re looking forward to welcoming them back to see the finished rooms.” Now in its 25th year, Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a life-limiting progressive illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. As a charity it must raise £2.2m each year, in addition to a £1.6m grant from the NHS CCG.

tonge's taste of promotion Lifelong Barnsley fan Dale Tonge is still watching his beloved team from the sidelines more than 20 years on, only now he has a slightly more important role at Oakwell. Appointed assistant head coach of the Reds in February, Tonge was a ballboy for Barnsley during the club’s season in the Premier League in 1997-98 and would go on to play 55 times for the team he supported as a youngster. His career has now come full circle, as the 33-year-old was appointed assistant to German boss Daniel Stendel last month, succeeding Andreas Winkler who joined Huddersfield town. “It didn’t sink in, initially,” Tonge told Barnsley Independent & Local in this exclusive interview. “I don’t think I realised the magnitude of what I was asked to do. Coming back to have the responsibility of assistant head coach is a massive honour. It’s something I’m enjoying and looking to progress as we move forward.” A defender in his playing days, he graduated from Barnsley’s academy having joined the set-up at nine years of age and would go on to play in the club’s successful promotion campaign of 2005-06. The former right-back outlined several comparisons between the current squad he coaches and the one he played with that achieved promotion from League One.

“I think the biggest similarity is the youth of the team and in terms of the players’ attitude towards each game,” said Tonge. “The boys go out to win. There’s no negativity. As coaches you can put positive messages out, you can put videos on, or give them messages but when they cross the white line it’s up to the players. I know from experience when I was in the team, it was confidence
and belief in my mate. That’s the biggest thing coming in from the outside and seeing this group. They’re a good bunch of lads who are all mates and if you take that over the white line it will only stand you in good stead. “It’s a credit to the gaffer and the bacroom staff with how they’ve managed the boys since pre-season.

They went on a pre-season camp to Budapest for a couple of weeks which is a great way to get everybody together and create that environment. I think it’s been consistent since I’ve been in. As a group in discussions, team meetings, collectively they all come back together. They’re always together and it’s evidenced on a Saturday.” Tonge has embraced the difference in approach to management from German boss Daniel Stendel, who took over at Oakwell last summer, as he looks to help guide the club back into the second tier
of English football. “It is a different ethos and how they want to do things building up to games and have different days off,” added Tonge. “It’s something that, culturally, we’ve never done and I certainly never did it as a player. So it’s something I’ve enjoyed because it’s different. Ultimately, football’s football and Daniel has that winning mentality. He’s a winner and wants to win everything; whether that’s a game of cards, ping-pong or anything. He has to win everything! Just from being in close quarters with him, he’s a winner.” The Reds are in good shape as they aim for automatic promotion, with the Sky Bet League One title still in their sights. Many fans who frequent Oakwell will testify that the football this season has been some of the best they’ve seen, and Tonge is aware of the demands the players face. He continued, “With how the boys are playing, if you don’t look after yourself you won’t be able to sustain it for a full season. I think that’s the biggest thing I’ve learnt, going back into the first-team environment. It’s not just sports science, it’s the analysis as well. There’s so many tiny bits of knowledge of every team that you can imagine. So there are no hiding places. It used to be about turning up to a game and you’d kind of know who you were playing. Whereas now, you get all the information given to you. That’s the biggest difference since I was here 15 years ago.”

Welcome to this month’s sports page of Together & Local, where this is my first real opportunity to introduce myself and outline what I have planned for the magazine over the coming months. I’m a football writer and broadcaster from Barnsley and have more than 11 years’ experience in the media field. This season I have already worked at 45 matches involving Barnsley and Rotherham (this will approach 60 by early May!), provided copy for Derby County and Lincoln City amongst other clubs, as well as worked as Associate Producer on the Barnsley FC documentary, Daydream Believers, which was released last September. For this month’s issue, I had the pleasure of sitting down for an exclusive interview with Dale Tonge, recently appointed assistant head coach at Barnsley Football Club. Dale is Barnsley through and through, and having played for the club too, fans know full well just how passionate he is and how dedicated he will be in his new role at Oakwell. It is always nice to have ‘one of our own’ helping develop the current talent and I’m certain this is the start of a bright future in the coaching game for Dale. Over the next few months I aim to sit down with a few more of Barnsley’s first-team players and staff, and bring readers plenty of exclusive and insightful content. It’s a really exciting time on the football scene, as many fans in the area know, Barnsley are currently playing some of the best football seen at Oakwell in years under head coach Daniel Stendel and it looks as though the Reds will be in the final reckoning come May.
