Metrodome’s Milestone Birthday The Metrodome Leisure Complex will celebrate its 30th anniversary next month. The Metrodome Leisure Complex will celebrate its 30th anniversary next month. The Metrodome cost £14.5 million to build, becoming one of the largest and most prestigious facilities in the United Kingdom at the time. It quickly became popular with locals due to its convenient location at the heart of Barnsley and the variety of facilities available. BPL, a not-for-profit charitable trust, took over management of the facility in 1999, transforming several areas of the building. Tim Wilson, the Chief Executive of BPL, is looking forward to celebrating the Metrodome’s milestone birthday. He said: “It is fantastic to see how far the Metrodome Leisure Complex has come over the years. Its success is down to our loyal customers and the community for supporting us. “The past 30 years have been fantastic for the Metrodome. Here’s to the next 30!” BPL launched Your Space Metrodome in March, which involved reinvesting around £1 million of profits back into fitness facilities. Your Space brings innovative fitness with a smile, and we’re proud to be the friendliest fitness facility in the region. The state-of-the-art facilities are a far cry from the Metrodome’s humble 20 metre x 10 metre fitness suite it originally started with. Now the fitness facilities are spread across two expansive gym areas (both featuring mezzanines), fitness suites for classes, a cycle studio and a relaxation area. The Metrodome originally housed five pools, including a competition, diving and leisure pools. The area has since been transformed into Calypso Cove

Waterpark in 2012, which benefitted from the addition of an interactive toddler splash pool, Barnacle Bay, in 2018. The waterpark was developed by the same team who worked on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean and features a 9ft pirate skull. Remarkably, visitors to the waterpark have come for as far as Australia to visit to experience the theme! When the complex opened, swimming attendance was on a national decline. However, the Metrodome managed to overcome the issue, experiencing a 16% increase in swimming attendance. Metrodome Arena, as it is known as now, comprised of sports courts, including badminton, basketball and volley courts in 1989. The venue has since transformed into an arena which hosts international sporting events including PDC Darts and the International Snooker Championships. Another area to receive a revamp was Metrodome Bowl, which was originally a Bowls Hall. Families can now enjoy an 8-lane, ultra-modern bowling alley which was refurbished in 2018! The Metrodome is also home to 5-star food hygiene rated restaurants (The Rigby Café and The Hideout) and an in-demand hair and beauty salon (Quest Hair & Beauty). BPL will be celebrating the special occasion by organising a variety of events. The company has also optimistically invited HRH The Queen back to the Metrodome to see the venue 30 years on! Drop the mic and come along to a pop star party that’s been especially designed for the kid. Cannon Hall Farm is bringing in a huge stage for this outdoor music festival that will be sure to occupy the littlest music fans. LMX - an award-nominated Little Mix tribute act - will join a DJ compare for a party that’s full of VIP vibes. The girls will perform two sets of Little Mix’s best tunes - and then they will take to the crowd and teach everyone a dance routine so the event finishes on a high. There’ll be selfie stations, mocktails, hair stylists and lots of musical entertainment to get the toes tapping. Meatloaf tribute Cannon Hall Farm 13 July

Cannon Hall Farm will make all your rock and roll dreams come true this summer as it brings back one of its most popular tribute artists for an outdoor music event. A music tribute to the rock legend Meatloaf will feature one of the UK’s top tribute acts and a supporting six-piece live band. It will all come back to you when you hear Deadringer Craig Halford (who competed as the man himself on Stars in their Eyes 12 years ago) perform on a special stage in the beautiful grounds of Cannon Hall Farm. Maet Live and The Never Neverland Express were formed over 12 years ago and have headlined festivals and top venues around the UK. And on 13 July they will be bringing their high-octane show to Barnsley for the second time, after their sell out appearance in 2018. The group will be mixing album tracks with exciting live performances with as much

passion and dedication as the big man himself - with a full line-up of drums, bass, lead guitar, keys, and female backing vocalists. Sister Act is the smash hit feel-good musical comedy based on the award winning 1992 film. Filled with uplifting gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story. When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover.

JSG Entertainement presents its second sportsman dinner at The Garrison in Barnsley town centre. Lee Sharpe is best known for his time spent at Manchester United. Beginning his career at Torquay United, United spotted his potential and signed Sharpe for a record fee of £200k. During eight years at Old Trafford, Sharpe played 265 games and scored 36 goals. Moving to Leeds in the summer of 1996, he was the club’s record signing at £4.5 million. In June 2003, aged just 32, Lee Sharpe announced his retirement from professional football. Since retiring from football, Lee has appeared on several reality TV shows including Celebrity Love Island and Dancing on Ice. Barnsley’s Big Weekend Barnsley Town Centre 13/14 July

Get ready for a huge weekend in the town centre as Barnsley celebrates its first ever Big Weekend. The action kicks off from 10am on Saturday 13 July, with the official opening of Library @ the Lightbox. The state-of-the-art Lightbox is the first new build of The Glass Works. Set over four floors and fully accessible, it features cutting-edge technology including virtual reality, sensory rooms for people with autism, support groups

for people with dementia and a multi-purpose event space. A rooftop terrace, adjacent restaurant and a traditional library offer are other standout features. Following the opening of the library, the annual Mayor’s Parade will make its way through the town centre. This year’s theme is Town Spirit – and while entrants are encouraged to embrace the Town Spirit theme, all ideas are welcome. Entries are already coming in thick and fast– but more are needed to make this year’s parade one to remember. The action continues into Sunday with Barnsley town centre’s first ever 5k run and fun run, Destination Barnsley International Festival and Pride Barnsley. More details will be announced soon. Coalfields Music Festival Wooley Grange 13 July

Get ready for four stages and over 25 live acts at Barnsley’s premier summer music festival event. The multi-stages that hosted music last year’s fantastic event are back again at the same venue - Woolley Cricket Club. Barnsley schoolboy completes three peaks challenge for hospice

A Barnsley schoolboy was part of a group of fundraisers who took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise money for Barnsley Hospice. Mason Coles, 10, was the youngest member of the nine-strong Little and Large team who climbed Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in under 12 hours on Saturday 18 May. Mason, who is a pupil at Holy Trinity School in Athersley, has raised £580 for the hospice. Mason’s dad, Gavin Coles, said: “People we passed were shocked when they

saw someone of Mason’s age doing the Three Peaks – many of them donated on the spot when they found out what he was doing. He is an exceptional young man.” Little and Large Charity Challenges is a group set up by the Coles family and friends to raise money for Barnsley Hospice. Make a Will Month raises £10k for hospice

Barnsley Hospice has raised almost £10,000 from its annual Make a Will Month. The initiative is now in its seventh year and sees four local law firms waive their fees during February in exchange for a donation to the charity. The Barnsley solicitors who generously gave their time for free to the hospice this year are Peace Legal Limited, based on Barnsley Road in Wombwell, and Bury & Walkers LLP, Elmhirst Parker LLP and Wosskow Brown LLP, all based on Regent Street. Julie Watts, 55, who lives in Penistone, is a healthcare assistant at Barnsley Hospice and took part in this year’s Make a Will Month. She said: “I’d realised that making my Will was something I had to do before it was too late and the hospice’s Make a Will Month fundraiser was the ideal opportunity to do that. “Through working at the hospice, I’m aware that the care our patients receive comes at quite a high cost and without people’s donations and generosity we can’t provide that care, so this is my own small contribution towards it.” Donations from Make a Will Month go directly to supporting patients and their families. Janet O’Hara, grants, trusts and legacies fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Make a Will Month has proved popular because it provides a great opportunity to let your family and friends know your wishes whilst helping the hospice at the same time. The average cost of making a Will is also

significantly more than the minimum donations we suggested, meaning you could actually save money whilst supporting the hospice.” The funds generated from Make a Will Month will go towards the £2.2m the hospice must raise each year, in addition to a £1.6m grant from the NHS. Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. As well as ten beds for inpatient care it also provides support through its day therapy unit and offers counselling and complementary therapies to many of its patients and carers.

Defibrillator at Barnsley Market Great news – a public-accessible defibrillator has been installed at Barnsley Market. The life-saving piece of equipment – used to give a high-energy electric shock to the heart in the event of a cardiac arrest – was supplied by Henry Boot Construction, the company building The Glass Works. The defibrillator – installed at the

right hand side of the May Day Green entrance to the market - can be used without training, and adds to existing devices already installed at Barnsley town hall and at the Alhambra. It’s great to see this in Tarn – it’s an important piece of kit that could save lives, so well done to Henry Boot for providing it!

Here you will find jobs that you can do either in your garden or allotment... • Water at dawn or dusk to avoid evaporation. • Go round each day or every couple of days de-heading perennial and bedding plants to encourage new flowers to come. • Train cucumber plants up netting or canes rather than trail along the ground. This will protect the fruit. • Pinch out side shoots on tomato plants each week to stop them bushing out. Feed weekly but if the leaves are looking yellow feed more often. • Apply a high potash fertiliser on fruiting plants once the fruit starts to form i.e. cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers.

Why not have fun with your child or a little project for yourself. Cut the tops off a four pint milk bottle. Make four holes in the bottom with a drill. Fill the Milk bottle up with multi-purpose compost. Sprinkle some herb seeds in the top then cover over with more compost. Then water to finish. You can then get your child to decorate these. Once complete you can fasten these to a fence or a wall. Finally wait for the seeds to grow and pick to use in the kitchen.

White chocolate & raspberry cheesecake

Ingredients For the base • 1 pack digestive biscuits, crushed • 150g butter, melted For the filling • 500g white chocolate, broken • 75g butter • 1/2 vanilla pod • 500g cream cheese • 50g icing sugar • 180ml whipping cream • 2 punnets raspberries • Method Prepare the cheesecake base first by mixing together the biscuits and butter and press together over the bottom of a 23cm spring form cake tin. Place in the fridge to cool down whilst you make the filling. 1. Mix together the white chocolate, butter and vanilla pod to a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently

simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Once it has all melted, remove the bowl from the heat, stir till it creates smooth mixture, and let cool slightly. In another mixing bowl mix together the cream cheese, icing sugar and whipping cream till it is all smooth. Remove the vanilla pod from the melted chocolate mixture and combine this mixture with the cream mixture. Gently stir in about 3/4 of the punnet of raspberries . Pour the mix over your biscuit base which you have had in the fridge and chill in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight if possible. Decorate with remaining raspberries just before serving. Eat and enjoy

Barnsley Main’s Heritage lives on Barnsley Main is a rare survivor of South Yorkshire’s rich mining heritage. The buildings stand as a reminder of an industry that powered the Industrial Revolution and shaped the lives of communities. The site of Barnsley Main was mined for over 170 years under different names until final closure in 1991. Today the winding and engine house appear isolated but they were once

part of a bustling complex of buildings. The Barnsley Main Heritage Group (BMHG) was formed in late 2016 with the support of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP) and the Barnsley Council Central Area Team. The focus of the group is to implement plans produced by the DVLP to

protect, preserve and enhance the Barnsley Main buildings and wider site. Over the past three years, the site has been given a new lease of life and is now physically accessible by the public. The Barnsley Main site has been host to many events, including willow weaving, hedge laying, Easter egg hunts, litter picking days and the Oaks Disaster Anniversary. BMHG are currently working on the

launch of a ‘pop-up museum’, which will give local residents and those further afield a place to come down and learn more about mining. The museum will feature mining equipment, artefacts and recorded stories, making it a great outing for families. Moving forwards, the group of volunteers will continue to work hard on the site, further improving the physical and natural environment.

If you’d like to get involved, BMHG volunteers work on-site every Monday at 10-12 and on the first Sunday of every month. We would love to hear any stories and also welcome all mining artefacts for the museum. Barnsley distillery launches gin to celebrate hospice anniversary

A Barnsley distillery is launching a bespoke gin to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Barnsley Hospice and raise money for its care. Darton-based Waterton’s Reserve Gin has hand-crafted the spirit with 25 botanicals and gifted the initial batch to the charity to sell at their Peaky Blinders Ball this Friday, 14 June. Guests at the event will be the first to taste the gin, which is made at the West Riding Distillery in Darton with spring water from Denby Dale. Bottles will be available to purchase in sizes of 70cl and 20cl from Bottle & Co in Mapplewell and the owner, Jay Ashton, has agreed to donate all profits to Barnsley Hospice. It will also be available at a selection of pubs and bars around Barnsley, including The Talbot and The Wentworth Arms in Mapplewell. Dave Owens, distiller and founder, Waterton’s Reserve Gin, said: “As soon as I heard it was the hospice’s 25th anniversary I thought it would be a great idea to craft a gin with 25 botanicals, which is quite a complicated process! “I’ve only recently moved to Barnsley but I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the hospice so I thought this would be a brilliant opportunity to help them. “Check the gin shelves when you’re out and about as you won’t just enjoy a fantastic and very small batch of gin; you’ll also be raising money for a great charity.” Following the Peaky Blinders Ball, a percentage of each bottle or measure

sold will be donated to the hospice and the distillery will make no profit from the sales. Barnsley College launches three new courses Barnsley College’s Business, Warehousing and Logistics department has expanded its course provision by launching three new courses: Aspects of Preparing to Set Up a New Business, Equality and Diversity and Mentoring. The Level 2 Aspects of Preparing to Set Up a New Business Award costs £375 and is ideal for someone who wants to enhance their understanding of starting a business. Students will take a range of units and gain knowledge of marketing and building business relationships.

The Level 2 Equality and Diversity Award is suitable for individuals who want to develop an awareness of equality and diversity. Students will gain knowledge of new legislation and understanding of issues which affect equality and diversity in today’s society, community and the workplace. The course costs £300. The Level 2 Mentoring Award will help students develop the skills needed to be an effective mentor. Students will gain an understanding of the benefits of mentoring, the role of the mentor and the legal and ethical requirements.

Barnsley College Creative Media Production students Matty Hugill, Kyle Walker and Karl Wellbelove have come out on top at the Young Audio and Radio Industry Awards (Young ARIAs), winning the Best in Sport category for their football show on online radio station, The Vibe. The students travelled to London on to attend the Young ARIAs ceremony at the BBC Radio Theatre, where they beat two other shortlisted sport radio shows to the title of Best in Sport. The prestigious event was hosted by Matt Edmondson and Kiss FM’s Daisy Maskell with the awards presented by big names in the radio industry including Mollie King, Sara Cox, Richie Anderson and Jack Pepper. The three College students run their own radio show, Everything Football, outside of their studies, with the weekly show dissecting the upcoming football fixtures, delving deep into the latest rumours and debates and discussing tough topics in the world of football.

Lee Barber, Barnsley College Media Teacher and Station Manager for The Vibe, suggested that the students enter the Young ARIAs for the work they have done on the show and their coverage of hard hitting subject matter such as sexism and racism in football. Lee said: “This is a brilliant achievement for the lads and brilliant news for The Vibe in general. To have an award-winning show on our schedule this early on is fantastic. The three students should be very proud of themselves. Future looking bright for the Reds Barnsley’s co-chairman and acting chief executive, Paul Conway, says the club will be aiming to ‘climb the Championship table’ next season. Whilst the Reds will not break the bank, Conway is confident the future is bright for the club - who are back where they belong in the second tier of English football. “We manage the club and work with a balanced budget,” said Conway. “We invest all of the additional revenue back into the club. We’ve had some success in growing it the right way. There are clubs in England going into administration and losing 10 or 20 million pounds. That’s just not our model.” The club have already made progress with two of its young stars; Jacob Brown and Cauley Woodrow have signed contract extensions in May and long-term stability is key for the US businessman. “Step one since we got here has been giving out long-term contracts,” he continued. “When a player comes in, we try and get them on five-year deals, so there is less of the constant worry of six months of players and extensions and players being shopped. “Anybody new coming in has to make a long-term commitment to Barnsley and we will continue to work the way we do it.” As well as tying up its current stars to longer contracts, Conway is keen to continue with the club’s current statisti-

cal approach to recruitment. “We believe in data and that has worked well for us,” he continued. “Data allows us to look at a wider group of players. Being in the Championship means we can recruit more continental players. Obviously, with Daniel (Stendel - head coach) being German, I think you can expect a couple of German players coming in, but we are looking for the best players, be it in England, Germany or wherever. “Obviously being in the Championship allows us more flexibility. One of the big attractions is that we are a stable club, we are well managed and we believe in youth. Many teams - even in our division in the Championship you don’t see that and we believe in that. We are an exciting proposition for people who want to play an attractive style of football and with the commitment to youth.” The American is also convinced Daniel Stendel’s energetic young side will thrive in the Championship, despite it being awash with clubs armed with parachute payments. “The attacking, pressing style works very well with a young team,” he said. “If you have a team with an average age of 28, 29 it is not going to work and you will not be able to implement that. “But we have high energy players who want to play in that system. “We are going to be playing against some older teams in the Championship that don’t like playing against a young, attacking team.”

With team and recruitment matters in good hands, Conway wants the club to be a more attractive proposition to supporters - old and new - and to become a real matchday hub. “There is a lot of things behind the scenes that you haven’t seen,” he said. “We have made a lot of investment into the players’ facilities and have built a kidzone. We want Oakwell to be the centre of the town, for supporters to come earlier and stay later but we have to give them more attractive activities. “This is a passionate town and when the club is going well, the enthusiasm on the streets is fantastic. We are happy to be here and when we go on the road there are sometimes 3,000 supporters. That is great to see and they deserve the success.”

Welcome to this month’s edition of Together & Local where we’re stuck in the void of close-season. Even the inaugural ‘Nation’s League’ by UEFA hasn’t really appeased my appetite (including the VAR debate which I’ll save for next month!). For me, there’s nothing like the week-to-week action of the Football League. Fixtures are due for release on June 20th and then we’ll know who Barnsley will be kicking off against come early August. Before we know it, pre-season will be up and running and Saturday 3rd August will come knocking soon after. It really is great for the town that Championship football is back for The Reds. As always, everyone is wanting to know who the club are trying to sign and when they’ll be signing them. Things do tend to take time and can happen quite late, as players like to keep their options open. What is certain is that the club will have known exactly which targets they wanted as soon as the final ball was kicked against Bristol Rovers. Aside from its benefits, I think one of the difficulties faced by the club’s recruitment policy is that players need time to ‘bed in’ when making such a big leap, as recruits tend to come from the lower leagues. There’s no doubting that the likes of Ethan Pinnock and Liam Lindsay - who were formidable in the recent promotion campaign - have benefitted from a season in League One. The previous season was a relentless one in the Championship and it’s a lot to ask of players who are making the step up from non-league, League Two, League One or from abroad. It’s a far more difficult transition which is why experience, or quality at least, is vital to survive and then thrive. In this month’s edition, I had the pleasure of bringing you an interview with Barnsley FC’s co-chairman, Paul Conway. It was great to hear how the club’s future will never be put in jeopardy by overspending but also how the club plan to challenge others in a very cut-and-thrust Championship next season. Paul alluded to ‘other clubs’ who faced financial difficulty and it’s no secret what happened just across the pennines at Bolton whilst Birmingham City also took points deduction. Whilst Oakwell might not be the home of the biggest club in the world - or even the Championship - there’s no doubting it’s probably one of the best-run and it’s reassuring to know that, for the foreseeable future, the town will have a football club to support and that’s what matters most.
