N R A T TALK Spring has sprung! This weather is starting to look up init? They reckon we’re gonna have a belter of a month in April weather wise – I saw on news it’s gonna be up to 26 degrees! Av already had my first BBQ of the year and av ironed all
mi t-shirts and shorts ready for that first hot day! Won’t be long before I’m laying out in back garden with a nice cold can and a mars ice cream! After I’ve munched all mi Easter eggs, that is!
Opening date for new library announced
It’s been a long time coming – but the new Library @ the Lightbox will open this summer! And I’m buzzing! It’s gonna be so much more than a library. It will have bucket loads of modern technology in there, sensory rooms for people with autism and support groups for people with dementia. All that plus the traditional offer of books, computers and tablets. It will be a real community hub when it opens with spaces available to use for meet-
ings and events. Tarn’s been crying out for the new library to be finished and I reckon we should all be excited that the opening day is approaching. Next to the library, there’ll be a café/bar/restaurant called Lounges. That will open around the same time as the library, too. So we can grab a coffee and cake or a sarni and read a good book with it! It will officially open on Saturday July 13 with an opening celebration. I can’t wait to go down and look around!
Reds on promotion charge It’s gonna happen init? E I E I E I O – UP THE FOOTBALL HERE WE GO! The Super Reds are going up. They’ve got some key fixtures over April but they’re in great form and look set to seal promotion. Daniel Stendel is an absolute legend, he’s got the
fans excited at Oakwell and playing some great stuff, but they’ve got the ability to grind out results, too. What they need now is all of our support. Get yourself to Oakwell if you fancy a Saturday out and get behind the lads. They need the Tarn to get behind them. You Reds!
New bridge in place Don’t know if you’ve all seen, but the new bridge is now in place over Jumble Lane crossing. It will be in for around 18 months the council say, to allow the crossing to close (Network Rail have paid for the bridge because it was their request to close it). Next year, the new Market Gate Bridge will be installed.
It’s state-of-the-art. I’ve seen some pics of it and it looks great. It will be a fantastic feature of Barnsley’s skyline and a brilliant part of The Glass Works. Speaking of The Glass Works, there’s a rumour that a massive name is gonna be confirmed soon. Read next month’s Together and Local to find out who…

How buzzing are you for the Tour de Yorkshire? It’s back on Friday 3 May – and if it’s owt like last year, it will be a brilliant day in the Tarn centre! Thousands of people are expected to come in and watch the race. The Tarn is hosting the start of both the women’s race and the start of

The Tour de Yorkshire is back for 2019 After hosting last year’s successful start, Barnsley town centre will once again play host to one of Europe’s fastest growing cycle races on Friday May 3 2019, welcoming the start of stage two of the men’s race and, for the first time, the official start of the ASDA Women’s Tour de Yorkshire. It promises to be an exciting day in the town centre, with plenty to see and do as Barnsley shows the world what it’s made of. The jam packed entertainment programme in the town centre will run throughout the day and well into the night on Bank Holiday weekend but the action doesn’t end there. Before leaving our town, the race passes through two of our best villages, Mapplewell and Royston, who will get their chance to show off to the watching world. Welcome to Barnsley Town Centre Barnsley town centre is changing. The ongoing £180m regeneration funded by Barnsley Council is bringing people back into town, with the new Barnsley Market and a reviving high street helping to buck declining national footfall trends and create a vibrant town centre. A Cineworld Cinema, Superbowl UK, JD Sports, NEXT, Muffin Break, Lounges, independent bar/restaurant MEET and a new library (more on that later) are all on the way, and promise to help further revitalise the town centre and build on the success of the new market. Investment continues, with plans for a new Digital Campus complete with a hotel and housing on the way. But it’s the food, drink and retail scene that continues to bloom. Did you know that nearly 70 per

cent of the town’s retail, food and drink outlets are owned independently? In the last 12 months, around 15 new independent bars and restaurants have opened in the town centre, helping to revitalise the evening and night time scene. The Victorian Arcade, Market Hill, Church Street, George’s Yard and Gateway Plaza all play home to some of the town centre’s best independents, including gin bars, craft beer pubs, Italian, Brazilian, Mediterranean and American smokehouse restaurants. Dessert parlours, clothes shops, gentlemen’s barbers, jewellers and gift shops add even more to the diverse offer. The new market hosts nearly 90 traders, each selling a range of high quality goods. Now open six days a week, there’s plenty of opportunity to shop and eat, with a new Market Kitchen on

Exploring Barnsley After the Tour de Yorkshire leaves the town centre – the action doesn’t end there. The riders will race down Huddersfield Road towards Barugh Green, past the Hungry Horse and down Claycliffe Road before briefly riding down Barnsley Road and turning right towards Mapplewell (past the Miller’s Pub). Here’s what they can expect to find from there…

be out in force to cheer on the riders – before the race heads over Notton Lane and past the former Oliver Twist pub. The route then officially leaves Barnsley as the riders continue on their route to Bedale.

Sky high food With the smell of spring in the air, lighter nights and brighter days comes the anticipation of spring. I love this time of year. Full of anticipation, potential and life, the garden in spring is all about enjoying the present and preparing for the future.

This year I’m going to be growing something a little different in my home and garden, food, but not in the traditional sense. As a garden designer as well as a passionate plants person, I love thinking outside the box, so I’ll be trialing some new ways to grow that I haven’t tried before. I want to experiment with growing some food in the air! Inspired by the urban food farms that are springing up all over the world, I thought I’d trial the idea for myself (on a smaller scale of course!). I have a pretty small courtyard style garden, which (in-keeping with the current fashion) is decorated like an outdoor living room, so there’s simply not much room for growing food … or so I thought! My earliest gardening memories are of growing vegetables with my grandad, and it’s been around 5 years since I’ve grown any, so I’ll be getting back into the groove, designer style. I’ll be trialing upside down tomatoes suspended from the lounge ceiling, the theory being that the plants put more energy into producing better fruit rather than fighting against gravity. Experimenting with green wall planters for herbs and tumbling strawberries, hydroponic indoor lettuces and tumbling courgettes.
But the thing I’m most excited about is growing fruit and vegetables on the roof of our extension. There’s plenty of room for hanging cucumbers, trailing beans, and fruit bushes in pots. I’ll have to irrigate artificially as its south facing and baked in sun, but the veg should love it up there. There’ll (hopefully) be very few slugs and no chance of the window cleaner standing on them, although picking it may be a challenge I need to overcome! I’ll be choosing varieties specially selected for growing in containers, and ones which promise massive flavour. I’m particularly looking forward to picking fresh herbs for garnishing as well as warm tomatoes ripened naturally by the sun. I will begin some plants by sowing from seed, and others I’ll be buying as plug plants. For the first time I’m trialing grafted tomatoes, chillis and cucumbers, which promise outstanding performance. They’ll cost around £10 per plant (less for toms) but one plant is hopefully all I’ll need to feed us for the summer. CUDWORTH & THE COMMUNITY Community is important in Cudworth and a new community association has been formed to make Cudworth a better place to live, work and prosper. The group are called Cudworth Businesses & Community Together and after the success of last year’s community projects they are now looking forward to 2019, with lots of great events and initiatives planned already. Working with the community, North East Area Team, Cudworth Ward Alliance and local Councillors the group helped raise over £16,000 in 2018 to buy new Christmas Lights and put on their 2nd Cudworth Christmas Fair. The 3rd Cudworth Bunny Trail, which was nominated for a nationwide award will return this summer and the group hope to build on special mention in the Rising Star category in the Great British High Street Awards 2018. The group is made up of friendly volunteers, a mixture of business owners/ staff and residents

working together to make positive changes to the village. Everyone is welcome to get involved and the group meets once a month. Accessible tourism conference comes to South Yorkshire
A tourism conference will take place in the Dearne Valley next month to discuss the opportunities for improving access for disabled people. The one-day ‘Dearne Valley Access Exchange’ conference will bring experts together from the tourism industry across the UK to discuss the opportunities for enhanced accessibility in the area. The free event on Thursday 11 April is being co-hosted by training provider Access For All UK and The Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP). It will take place at The Ironworks at Elsecar Heritage Centre in Barnsley from 9.30am to 4.30pm. During the conference there will be a series of workshops where people can try out a range of products and services designed to improve accessibility. Guest speakers lined up for the event include Ross Calladine, head of business support at VisitEngland; John Child, managing director of the multi-award-winning Sandcastle Waterpark in Blackpool; Diane Howarth, joint owner and director of Cottage in the Dales, and Dan
Smith, head of creative design at Motionspot Bathrooms. Access For All UK, based in Derbyshire, aims to improve the lives of disabled people by providing access to consultancy, training, auditing and business support services. The organisation was founded in 2013 by friends and disability campaigners Gillian Scotford and Jane Cooper. Gillian said: "Many people working in the tourism sector often say they want to help guests with access needs but feel unsure about what they need to do. Barnsley businesses smash hospice fundraising challenge Barnsley Hospice has raised over £10,000 from its annual ‘Accumulator Challenge’, with Tankersley Manor Hotel crowned this year’s winners. The charity set The Apprentice-style challenge to organisations across the area to turn £28 into as much money as possible during the 28 days of February. The team from Tankersley took first prize after raising £1,858. Fundraising initiatives dreamed up by the teams included a ‘pie in the face’ challenge, selling doggy bow ties, a bungee jump, selling homemade valentine’s cards and an office swear box. Barnsley College picked up the award for the most innovative fundraising idea after senior staff were placed on ‘police bail’ and had to ask friends and family to raise enough money for their release. The winners were crowned, and participants thanked at a special event held at the hospice on 19 March. Andy Barber, part of the winning team at Tankersley Manor, said: “When we saw the big companies we were up against, we didn’t think we had a chance, so

to win is amazing. With a full year to prepare for the next one, we’re confident of raising even more and bringing the trophy home again! “I visited the hospice before through my old job, and it makes you appreciate the commitment shown by all the staff and volunteers. I think it’s one of the best charities the hotel has worked with – we want to help the people who care for our community.” Simon Atkinson, corporate fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “This is the second year we’ve run the Accumulator Challenge and the ideas and enthusiasm shown by local businesses has once again been incredible. Tankersley Manor are well-deserved winners with an amazing £1,858, and five teams raised over £1,000 which is a fantastic achievement. “I also want to thank the people of Barnsley who have helped each team raise so much money through their generosity. The money will help us care for the hundreds of local families who need us each year and for that, we are very grateful.”
In total, the Accumulator Challenge saw £10,811 raised from 15 organisations: Victoria Medical Centre, Wilbys Estate Agents, Wynsors Shoes, Barnsley Bowl, Barclays, The Closet Queen, Churchfield Vets, Hair Revolution, XPO Logistics, Barnsley Norse, Tankersley Manor, Sally’s Glitz & Glam, Little & Large, Webmart, and two teams from Barnsley College. The grand total was £1,800 higher than last year, despite the same number of teams taking part. Donations from the Barnsley business community help the hospice raise the £2.2m it needs each year to care for patients and their families. A further £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. Barnsley College students present Antigone
Barnsley College teams up with leading Sports Scientist Barnsley College’s Sports Academy has teamed up with highly experienced Sports Scientist, Nathan Winder, to develop its football academy and sporting education. Nathan, who started his career working at the College, returns to the Sports Academy with a wealth of knowledge and experience. His extensive career includes working as Head of Sports Science at Barnsley FC and Leeds United and most recently Fitness Coach at Ipswich Town. Nathan said: “I’m really looking forward to it. This is a good opportunity to help with the development of young footballers. “There are a lot of really talented athletes in the Barnsley Sports Academy and individuals in terms of their education.

Barnsley College Performing Arts students invite the public to their performances of the Greek Tragedy Antigone by Jean Anouilh. Students will take to the stage at the Electric Theatre on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 March at 7.00pm. Jean Anouilh’s play is inspired by Greek mythology and the play of the same name by playwright Sophocles. The play follows tragic hero Antigone’s story of resistance. After her brother is denied the dignity of a burial, Antigone refuses to bow to her ruler and prospective father-in-law and instead chooses to fight for all that she believes in. Paul Atkins, Performing Arts Course Leader at Barnsley College, said: “Our production of Antigone will be set in a post-apocalyptic present. The desolation of

Welcome to this month’s football column in Together & Local, where it’s certainly been a busy few weeks. I’ve had the pleasure of a sit-down interview with Barnsley FC’s rising star, Jacob Brown, (which I hope you enjoy in this issue) before then witnessing him score a dramatic winning goal against Walsall from a pub in Berlin! My trip to the German capital was for the ‘11mm International Football Film Festival’ as part of GRAFT agency; the production team behind ‘Daydream Believers’. Last month’s deadline came just too soon to be able to confirm that our film about Barnsley FC’s rise to the Premier League was up for an award, as naturally we were all bursting with pride! Whenever I caught the odd speech
from actors at any of the big Hollywood film ceremonies on television, I never understood or believed it when a winner of an award said they were ‘just happy to be nominated’. Now I definitely do. We were lucky enough to be in some incredible company at the festival, as the film pipped hundreds of submissions to be nominated alongside productions by Paramount, Universal and Fox amongst others. It was rather apt that the film, about a team fighting against all the odds as the underdog, was up against several multi-million pound productions. The ultimate winner at the festival was ‘Nossa Chape’ - an incredibly moving documentary about the plane crash which claimed the lives of the majority of Brazilian football team, Chapecoense,
in 2016. We had definitely already won by raising funds for Barnsley Hospital’s 'Tiny Hearts’ appeal, but it was also a great feeling to see the cinema fill up for its showing to people from a completely different country. The festival definitely showcased the power of football and the feedback from peers and football fans alike was humbling and overwhelming. By the time my next column and feature is due, Barnsley could very well have secured another promotion, albeit to the Championship. I wonder if they’ll want a film making about it…

Rapid rise for yorkshire boy brown
There’s nothing better Barnsley supporters love seeing than an Academy youngster breaking into the first-team, and that’s exactly the story of exciting young forward Jacob Brown. And the soon-to-be 21-year-old isn’t just making up the numbers, either. His return to the side from a three-match suspension last month saw him score a dramatic lastgasp winner at Walsall in the Reds’ hunt for promotion from Sky Bet League One. Discussing his rise from Barnsley’s youth team, Brown says it’s been a rapid rise from Under-18s and Under-23s football to playing in front of thousands of spectators. “Looking back over the last 12 months, everything has happened so quick,” he told Together & Local. “From going out to get my taste of men’s football on loan at Chesterfield to now come back in pre-season and get my place in the team. From January I started to get a few goals and assists, everything has happened quick but I’ve liked how it’s happened.” The hardworking forward player, who hails from Halifax, has slotted into German Head Coach Daniel Stendel’s style seamlessly. Athletic, quick and full of energy, Brown paid tribute to his boss for giving him his chance this season. “At first, when you’ve not played many games, you can be quite nervous,” he continued. “But from January, when I got my spell and run in the team, I played five or six in a row which gave me a massive confidence boost. That was when I felt like my ability came through. "The gaffer has shown faith in me from early on in the season. When we were 2-0 down at Scunthorpe, he brought me and Victor (Adeboyejo) on and then we ended up getting a draw. Things like that give you a boost. “I remember when we played against Coventry, it was my first start and I missed a few good chances. We ended up losing that game and that could have been a turning point for me. I could have lost a lot of confidence from that but the gaffer spoke to me and said it’s
about getting those chances. you’ve got a chance of doing that as well. “When I was training in the youth teams, the first-team were training next to us. So I was always thinking ‘I want to be with them one day’. You might not think it will happen then a few years later, for it to actually happen, is just amazing to think about it like that.” Reds supporters were in good voice when Brown knocked in his fifth of the season at Walsall, serenading the forward with his very own song. “It was a bit weird to hear my name being sung,” he smiled. "The first song was the ‘Four-four-two with Browny on the wing’ which was carrying on from Potty (Brad Potts). To actually then get a different song made up for you is really surreal. When I was on the pitch and hearing the fans singing it, I was getting goosebumps. It’s really nice to hear.” Finally, Brown has sound advice for any budding young footballer - and it’s certainly evident he practices what he preaches. “The main thing is to be doing more than everyone else,” he added. “You have to put the extra work in because it does get noticed. A lot of people think that it goes unnoticed if you do extra gym or extra off the pitch, but it definitely does get noticed and you improve a lot as a player. “You do have to make a lot of sacrifices, especially when you’re younger. A lot of your mates will want to go out at the weekend and stuff like that, but you can’t really be doing that. But playing football should be what you love doing, so it’s not really a sacrifice if you look at it that way. You’re doing a job but it’s a hobby that you love doing, which is good.”
