WELCOME TO OUR APRIL EDITION! Hello everyone and welcome to our April issue. We’ve been working from home this month due to the current rules and regulations but we’ve put together a fantastic issue for you! Being able to work outside in the lovely weather is a bonus too.

Coming up in this issue, we have the chance for you to win £100 in our puzzle competition, an update from Georgina in The Pink Lounge and we see what the Jolly Boys have been up to. We have some gardening tips from a fantastic local gardener, some information on booking yourself in for a brand new shed or garage with Lidget Compton and we put the spotlight on a Thurnscoe group who have been organising food boxes for the vulnerable.

We also want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the key workers who are still working and putting themselves on the frontline. It’s an uncertain time at the moment, but seeing the community come together puts a positive light on it.

Hello everyone! I can’t believe it’s April.

I thought this year was going quickly, but after this Covid-19 situation it seems to have come to a halt.

I’m not going to go on about it because I’m sure you’ll agree that seeing it all over the news all the time is incredibly annoying, so I’m going to do a little run down of what I’ve been doing!

I work from home quite a bit anyway, so it wasn’t a huge shock to me that I had to stay put on my own land.

I’ve been making my time useful, learning to spread out tasks, chores and activities healthily throughout the day. I’ve discovered some new hobbies (including rock painting!) and found different ways to use social media.

I manage work’s social media accounts as well as some of my own so it can be a bit overbearing sometimes when I’m sat on my phone or laptop all day, having a little break once in a while for a cup of tea or walk around the garden is a blessing.

I’ve also got back into reading! I’m not a huge reader, I’m a bit fussy with books and like to finish them as quickly as I can. I’m a huge fan of horror and thriller books, to me it’s a scary film without the jump scares! My favourite book I’ve read so far is called ‘Blood Harvest’, a mind-twisting thriller. I’m currently reading a Mo Hayder classic which, if you know Mo Hayder, you’ll know of the crazy plot twists and mind-numbing plots. This one, ‘The Treatment’ is reminding me how much I love thriller books and creepy twists. It’s not all spooks and horrors though, I’m yet to read a book I got a few weeks ago from the OH. I’m a huge Disney fan and this one is a twist on the children’s favourite, Frozen. A more mature read of course, I’m not

looking to paint by numbers just yet...we’ll see how long this lockdown lasts...

I want to hear from you about some book recommendations! My mum has a similar reading brain to mine, we read the same genres and swap books between each other. PRIME MINISTER CALLS LAST ORDERS The Jolly Tap on the Arcade closed until further notice as the entire country is forced to cease non-essential trading in an attempt to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The monthly feature from Jolly Boys’ Brewery was intended to be a special bringing news of a celebration beer to mark the 100th brew since they began brewing. “We meet every Monday to discuss various matters and on Monday 9th March we met at 6pm. Which meant we had all heard Boris Johnson on our car radios en-route to the meeting”.

It was a meeting intended to be about positive next steps for the brewery and instead it was more about preparing a response to the PM’s announcement; essentially encouraging people to stay away from the pub.

Boris Johnson has taken steps to remove the most basic of civil freedoms in what can only be described as a true test of Prime Ministerial textbook scenarios. In the trade off between a public health crisis and economic crisis the Prime Minister has taken unprecedented measures to relieve pressure on the NHS and buy time to prevent rapid spread of Covid-19. “People will talk about this outbreak for years to come. This is our generations World War and we understand that everyone has to do what they can do to slow the spread. The entire NHS are up against it and we clearly admire and thank them for their bravery, compassion and skill” added Head Brewer, Ondrie.

In a series of fiscal and monetary measures on a scale never seen before in peace time, the government has attempted to stabilise the economy and remove uncertainty. Relying strongly on science and scientific models, the government has introduced a series of measures designed to slow down the spread of the virus and reduce pressure on the NHS. People are being instructed to stay at home in the hope of buying more time to fight the virus and save lives.

As Steph pulls her last pint in The Jolly tap on the Arcade and the regulars head off home. The country braces for its most challenging times since the second World War. Let us hope it is sooner rather than later that it is business as usual.

Local businesses such as Outfield Digital are already producing and supplying visors and Barnsley Council offered use of their communication system to help coordinate wider production and distribution, as well as using Library 3D printing resources to produce equipment.

The network is also working to identify further ways for the Barnsley digital community to support NHS Trusts and key workers, and linking closely with regional initiatives.

Darren Howlett, Deputy Associate Director of Operations at Barnsley Hospital, said: “From the second we put the call out to Jessica, the College responded immediately and less than a week later we have equipment being used on site by our clinical teams providing safe equipment and support to us all in this very challenging time.

DIGITAL COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER FOR NHS Barnsley College, Barnsley Digital Media Centre (DMC), the Library @ The Lightbox and local businesses have come together to support Barnsley Hospital and the NHS. The College’s Digital Industries Programme Manager Jessica Lee-Henderson, DMC Manager Tracey Johnson and DMC Makerspace Coordinator Paul Bennett have created a network to produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which will be worn by hospital staff to prevent the spread of Covid-19 when they are treating patients.

Jessica and Bradley Sharp, Creative Technician at the College, used the College’s cutting and printing equipment to produce an initial batch of 3D visors for the hospital.

With assistance from Jonathan Frost of Sheffield-based SH Lasers, the pair are continuing to produce a total of 2500 visors which will also be offered to GP surgeries and nursing homes.

This is a real credit to the togetherness of Barnsley.

From me reaching out in a speculative manner we now have a network of local businesses, the College and individuals coming together to support local NHS Trusts.

It is making a real difference to us at Barnsley Hospital NHS Trust and for that we are truly grateful.”

Jessica added: “When we were asked if we could help make PPE for the hospital, Bradley started up one of our 3D printers while I started to chat with Tracey about wider community involvement. We feel very humbled to be able to help in a small way. These visors will be so helpful to the hospital, GP surgeries and nursing homes.

The doctors, nurses and wider team are doing such an amazing job and to be able to support them is an incredible feeling.”

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture at Barnsley Council, said: “The DMC and the new Digital Campus, of which Barnsley College is a key part, are all about encouraging collaboration to develop new and innovative ideas, businesses and technology. This partnership works across the College, the Council and Lucy and Matt Brailsford of local company Outfield Digital to support the NHS at the most challenging of times demonstrates how closely knit this community is, and how quickly it can respond.”

Matt Brailsford of Outfield Digital concluded: ‘We primarily develop websites and eCommerce software, however I am also a keen maker and have my own laser cutter. Once we found a visor design that worked with my cutter, we sourced materials and delivered a prototype to give to the hospital for approval. As soon approval was granted, we got to work making visors and have already delivered 150 visors to the hospital, with a further 450 to come.

“We’re now also liaising with Tracey and other organisations in Barnsley and the wider region to assist with information and advice, bring in additional volunteers with the right equipment and make more of these vital PPE visors.”

BARNSLEY HOSPICE LAUNCHES URGENT APPEAL FOR FUNDS Barnsley Hospice has launched an urgent appeal for funds during the coronavirus outbreak.

The hospice needs to raise over £2 million each year to continue to provide care for patients with progressive, life-limiting illnesses and support for their families, but it is already losing £2,300 per day due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Barnsley Hospice is now urging the people of Barnsley to get behind its urgent appeal to raise money so it can keep its doors open for the next few weeks and months.

People are encouraged to donate from the comfort of their own home. They can do so by making a one-off donation online at www.barnsleyhospice.org/donate; setting up regular giving via direct debit, or playing its weekly lottery.

Julie Ferry, chief executive at Barnsley Hospice, said:

THE CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL The appearance of snowdrops in February and the rivers of golden daffodils in March are some of the early flowering events we’ve just enjoyed, both helping to mark the start of a new year in the garden. We’re now enjoying the blossoming of cherry trees which also marks the season, but the cultural significance in the UK is nothing like what it is in Japan, where the timing of the cherry blossom is forecast on TV on special ‘sakuraforecasts’ alongside the weather report. The coming of spring and the blossoming of the cherry trees (sakura) is celebrated with the festival of ‘hanami’, meaning ‘flower-viewing’, where people gather, picnic and party beneath the blossoming trees.

As part of the 2019-20 Japan-UK Season of Culture, 6,500 cherry trees have been donated to UK parks, gardens and schools, from the Sakura Cherry Tree Project. Over 450 schools and 160 public parks will benefit, creating a wave of cherry blossom from late March to early May, starting at St. Ives in Cornwall and moving northwards to trees planted as far north as the Orkney Islands. Many of the suburban avenues of ornamental cherries in the UK were planted in the 1930s and 40s. Sadly, they are not long-lived trees, especially in an urban setting where their vigorous shallow root system causes issues with kerbs and paving, and so the era of residential areas festooned with cherry blossom in spring may slowly come to end as they are replaced with different trees. Fear of building subsidence also makes people hesitant to choose

them as a garden tree, but with the right tree choice the risk can be avoided.

For the postage stamp garden, narrow upright forms such as the columnar Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ and V-shaped Prunus ‘Spire’ are suitable, although they do get tall and lack the attractive spreading branches associated with traditional cherries. The Fuji cherry, Prunus incisa, has a more natural form and is the smallest of the natural cherry trees, at no more than 5m. It is also one of the first to flower. Prunus ‘Little Pink Perfection’ is even smaller, reaching just 3x3m. For a really tiny garden or a container, look out for Prunus’Kojo-no-mai’, a very small dwarf shrub reaching no more than 2.5m, or bought in a standard lollipop shape.

For your own hanami experience, the widest diversity of traditional Japanese cherries can be seen at Batsford Arboretum in Gloucestershire, where they hold the national collection. For big impact, Alnwick Garden in Northumberland has the largest collection of Taihaku cherries in the world, with almost 330 trees, known for huge snow-like clusters of white flowers usually around the end of April to early May. The exact timing of the cherry blossom season varies with the weather each year. Follow garden social media and call ahead to avoid disappointment. Otherwise, you may know streets in your area where mature cherries will be in full swing; celebrate the season and take the detour to appreciate them.

BUSINESS STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR BARNSLEY HOSPICE Barnsley College Business students raised over £500 for Barnsley Hospice by participating in the Accumulator Challenge.

Each February, Barnsley Hospice’s Accumulator Challenge sets local businesses the task of turning £29 into as much money as possible for the Hospice during February.

The students organised a range of fundraising activities including raffles, competitions, hosting a coffee afternoon, selling cakes, and ‘kidnapping’ senior members of the College’s management team and holding them to ransom.

Steve Willmer, Tutorial Learning Mentor at the College, said: “We’ve competed in this challenge for numerous years and it’s fantastic to see that our students and staff are still excited to be involved. Not only does it provide our students with an opportunity to develop their communication and team working skills, it allows us to raise funds for a local charity.”

BIG LOCAL COMMUNITY A community group in Thurnscoe have organised food boxes to be delivered to the vulnerable in the community.

They have given funding to Station House Community Association in order for them to be able to deliver essential products like bread, milk and fruit to vulnerable Thurnscoe residents.

This comes as many online supermarket slots are empty and going out to a supermarket sees queues all around the car parks.

Together & Local tried booking an online slot on the Morrisons website and gave up after being in a queue for an hour.

Local Darfield resident Jenny said it’s impossible to do your normal shopping. “It’s terrible. You either waste your time trying to book online or queuing for ages in the freezing cold. I can’t drive to get the shopping for me and my kids and no family members live close enough to get me my shopping.”

Mark from Birdwell praises the efforts of the local community.

It’s so nice how we’re all coming together.

We’ve been delivering food boxes to areas all round Barnsley and Rotherham and it makes you feel proud. So many more are struggling than what we think.

BARNSLEY SPORTS ACADEMY NET LEAGUE TITLE

Megan Atkinson, a Sport student and captain of the netball team, said: “The team has just got better and better with each training session and game, it’s been great to see everyone progress individually as well as together.

I think as the season went on everyone in the team could see our hard work and dedication was paying off, which was nice.

Barnsley Sports Academy netball team have been crowned champions of the Association of Colleges Sport Yorkshire and Humber Netball West C league.

The Academy has helped me so much, especially our coach, Amy. My advice for anyone wanting to take up netball would be to get stuck in, go to every training session you can, take every opportunity that is thrown at you, whether it be a qualification or a chance to play outside of College and just work hard!”

The team excelled throughout the season under the guidance of Barnsley College’s Netball Coach, Amy Horsfield, winning all seven of their games and scoring 298 goals in total.

The netball team competed against some of the best in the league. To prepare for the competition they completed a gruelling training routine every Tuesday and Thursday evening after their studies, with a strength and conditioning session on a Monday.

Amy Horsfield added: “I’m incredibly proud of the way the team has performed this season. Their attitude and dedication to the netball Academy has been amazing, which shows we are building the right culture for our student athletes.

PHOTO IDEAS YOU CAN DO AT HOME! with Becca Butcher Hi everyone, Today’s article is a little bit unplanned, my original article idea for April was to show all the “Instagramable” photo locations you can travel to by bus from Barnsley station (I know, very original and different to my first article last month......) but obviously I can’t do that so today I’m writing about photo ideas that you can do at home!

I’ve been taking photos for years now, obviously I’m not a professional and there’s always room for improvement but these are some very simple tricks that I’ve learnt over the years and use every day. They may be useful if you like to take product photos for your company / business or if you just want to take up a new hobby! These are my 4 top tips for making generic photos look a little bit more professional, you don’t even need a professional camera!

If you just want to use your phone camera that’s fine too, I personally use an Olympus Pen...

1. PROPS Props can make any photo look a little bit more interesting.

They don’t even have to be fancy, you could just use the things you have around your house. It’s a good idea to use a mixture of big, medium and small props just to fill in the negative space around the products you’re photographing.

If you prefer to have just a blank background then of course that’s fine too, it’s your personal preference!

Personally, I use a lot of glitter, confetti, ribbons, strings, pearls, gemstones, shells, notebooks, quotes, books, magazines, pencils, paper clips, flowers, petals, makeup, jewellery, scarves, feathers, whatever I can get my hands on really! (Not all in the same photo of course, I mix it up so that I don’t over-do it). It’s nice to sprinkle a little bit here and there but you can use most things as props if they’re relevant to your photo. For example, if you’re taking a photo of something you baked or cooked then why not use food-related props like spoons and napkins, or if you’re taking a photo of makeup then use makeup-related items like lipsticks and eyeshadows but remember that sometimes less is more..

2. OUT OF FOCUS In a lot of my photos I’ll hold flowers or leaves (usually fake ones, but you can use other things too, whatever you can get your hands on that won’t be too bulky or distracting) close to my camera lens while keeping the products I’m shooting further away, this creates an out-of-focus blurry effect for the flowers. It brings more focus to the product and holding the flowers in the corners of the photo means it won’t cover or hide the main items too much and adds interesting layers to the image. Another way to layer-up is to stack a few different items on top of each other, like overlapping clothes or using boxes and shelves to add height so your image isn’t just flat.

3. BACKGROUNDS If you have a product that you want to bring more liveliness to, why now use a bright background? Or a patterned background? A lot of the time I’ll use my bedsheets - like these polka dot ones - as a background for my flatlay photos (a flatlay is when your products are laid flat and you’re taking the photo directly from above) or a pattered notebook, postcard, box lid, even a colourful textured clothing item like a pink shirt or yellow jumper. This brings a lot more character to the photos than a plain white or brown carpet background would. For this photo I used a purple bath bomb to add some background colour in the water behind the bath products.

4. EDITING Editing a photo can change the tone completely, if you want to make it warmer toned add more yellow, for cooler tones add more blue. You can add filters or visual effects and stickers, text, gifs etc. I usually edit all of my photos on my phone using apps like VSCO, Lightroom, Snapseed, Template, Meitu, Facetune, Over, A Design Kit etc. Each app offers different ways to edit the photo so I usually interchange between them. Instagram also has a builtin editing option with filters and effects to change the brightness, contrast, vibrancy etc. My advice is that you don’t have to always go 100% with the filters, sometimes it’s best to use a filter to its 20% capacity as to not over-do it on the shadows or highlights. I recommend playing around with and adjusting them until you’re 100% happy.

Hopefully you can put these tips to good use and maybe try them out next time you’re taking product photos for your social media pages, even if you’re just looking to learn a new skill while stuck at home, I hope this helps!
