Au Revoir Gauthier Some sad news for the fans of the Super Reds – chief executive Gauthier Ganaye has left Barnsley to take up a position at French side OGC Nice (don’t blame him to be fair, the weather is far better in France!) Paul Conway will take over from Ganaye, who has been chief executive at the Reds since the 2017.

To be fair to Ganaye, he’s left Barnsley in good nick. I reckon they’re in with a shout of promotion, tha knows. The squad is young, eager and they play a good brand of football, so it won’t be long before Barnsley are playing Championship footy again. Av already booked mi hotel at Wembley for May when we win the play-offs! You Reds!

Boxing hero COULD make history

There’s a massive opportunity for local boxer Josh Wale coming up next month. Brampton lad Josh fights at The Metrodome on Friday March 8 for a British title, and if he wins, he’ll be the first Barnsley man in history to win a British title at two different weights.

It couldn’t happen to a nicer lad, so let’s get behind Josh and hope that he makes Barnsley boxing history! Imagine if he wins, he’ll be in running for sports personality of the year! On thi bike Anthony Joshua, hardest man in country is from Tarn!

The Glass Works taking shape What does everyone think to The Glass Works development? It’s starting to make good progress init? I know a lot’s been said about it costing a lot of money, but surely it can only be a good thing? The market’s now open and absolutely buzzing with trade, and rumour has it that more new shops and restaurants will be confirmed this year. At the end of last year, the council announced that JD Sports (can’t wait to get a new pair of trainers!) Muffin Break (I love a muffin or three) MEET (same bloke that runs 00Bar and Backyard BBQ in Tarn centre, if it’s owt like there,

will be spot on!) and Lounges (a new restaurant/bar/ coffee place – basically does everything) will all be coming and opening in the development. JD Sports and Lounges will open this year, so can’t wait for those! I can’t wait to get down there once it’s finished. I know Tarn’s a building site at the minute – but it will all be worth it in the end. The new library opens this summer, and it’s looking well so far! It’s gonna be packed full of state-of-the-art equipment by the sounds – meaning our library will be one of the best in the country. Sounds fancy!

Car park demolished Did you get woken up in the early hours of the last Sunday in January by a loud bang? I bloody did, I thought we were in the middle of a tropical thunderstorm cos it was banging it down outside! It was actually the multi-storey car park getting demolished in Tarn centre. It didn’t half go with a bang! Over 800 explosives were used to bring down the building, which weighed around

6,500 tonnes (heavy that, init!). The rubble that’s left on site will be recycled and used towards the rest of The Glass Works project. It’s roughly where the new cinema will be built. Don’t forget about Parkway, though, that will still be there! Although the new Cineworld will attract loads of new folk into Tarn, which can only be a good thing!

The Lamproom February 19-23 Beauty and the Beast is one of the world’s best-loved fairy tales. First published in 1740, it has been adapted many times for television, cinema and the stage. This adaptation was premièred by Wakefield Little Theatre at The Theatre Royal, Wakefield in 1995. And now the time has come for the Beast to be woken from his slumbers in Barnsley! Cannon Hall Farm February 16-24 Join Cannon Hall Farm for its lambing season – one of the farm’s most exciting times in the calendar! Birdwell Venue February 23 It has been far too long since the Sheffield-formed fourpiece band released new material, so while we wait for album number six, why not enjoy the next best thing? Cheerleading camp

Barnsley FC February 19 Reds in the Community will be running a Cheerleading Camp during the February half-term. Led by Starstruck School of Theatre Dance, the Camp is available for children aged 5-14, costing just £12 per day or £30 for all three sessions. Any participant who attends all three sessions will also have the opportunity to grace the hallowed turf of Oakwell Stadium in April. They will all be part of the pre-match entertainment alongside the flagbearers in front of what is sure to be a bumper crowd for the final home game of the season at home to Blackpool FC on Saturday April 27. The popular Barnsley FC Soccer Camps are returning for February half-term! Soccer Camps are available for boys and girls of all abilities aged 5-14 while the Mini-Kickers course for 2-4-year-olds will run on the Friday, February 22. Camps provide children with a cost-effective and fun-filled activity, costing £12 per day or you can get even better value for money by booking the full week for just £54. Players will receive professional training from FA qualified and DBS checked coaches, developing footballing ability in a safe and supportive environment. The Monday (February 18) will also run as a Barnsley FC open trial day, with Academy staff and scouts in attendance. Players who display talent will be invited for further training with the Academy. Alchemy Guitar Pickups As all skilled musicians know, the best sound doesn’t just come from having the gifted talent and mind-set, it also is dependent upon the quality of an instrument as well as a musicians relationship with a certain style of music. Take guitars for example, acoustic guitars are mostly suited to play mellow and chipper styles (like country) whereas electric guitars are highly commended for more heavy sounds and for more of a go-go vibe. However, there are some specific components of these instruments, like guitar pickups, that hold the main responsibility of projecting the characteristic output tone for each genre. Guitar pickups themselves are meagre, electromagnetic microphones, which sit below the strings in the body of an electric type of guitar. They are normally created from one or two coils, of copper wire, that are then wrapped around the north/south pole (s) of a magnet. The purpose of this, is to ‘pick up’ any vibrations and movement of the strings and then transfer this sound to the amplifier. Although all guitar pickups have the same role, both the type and quality of a guitar pickup is significant when it comes to generating a certain output and sound. The reasoning for this is because each different type of guitar pickup is designed to have a certain allocated output to compliment one or

more genre of music. When guitar pickups are applied to output tones, higher output guitar pickups are known to be loud and bassy in contrast to other lower output guitar pickups that are found to be quieter and more trebly. In regard to the multiple types of guitar pickups that exist, it can be especially hard to come across a single guitar pick up that touches on each type of output tone to allow a musician to play multiple styles. Consequently, Jack Bradley, who is local to Hoyland, remarkably brought together this idea in reality and has since made it local to Barnsley through his own business ‘Alchemy Guitar Pickups’. When we met with Jack, he said that the trial and error process for his range of guitar pickups took around 5 to 6 months with the inclusion of finding the best combination of materials to create his own branded ones. The whole process included testing by fitting each successful guitar pickup into a guitar. Jack mentioned that the guitar is then connected “to a couple of different amplifiers to make sure that it sounds the way that it should.” In response to his work, he also stated that he is approached by a variety of clients who all have unique enquiries as customers. As a result, he is extremely professional in the area of tailoring his makings to their prefer-

ences and needs. It is both evident and admirable how far Jack is willing to go, for his company, when it comes to himself helping all customers, including those who have less of an understanding about the type of guitar pickups that they need on their own guitar… “What I do tend to do is… I’d ask them what guitar they’ve got, and then I’d figure out which pickup in

Spotlight is an online casting portal for professional performers, connecting them with roles in theatre, television and film productions. Training providers must fit specific criteria to be accredited, with this accreditation opening many doors for performing arts students. Pots of the past Trends in gardening tend to move pretty slowly, but what is interesting is the overwhelming message about how we are moving toward becoming a more sustainable industry. This is partly due to increasing regulations and public pressure on recycling, in particular plastics, which seem to be hitting the headlines weekly. As a general rule, our industry is pretty eco (after all, we’re planting trees for a living), but there are a few culprits left but even one of those is about to change. The black plastic pot may soon me a thing of the past. Black plastic pots are currently widely recycled within the industry and reused by home gardeners, often being made from recycled materials, but once they leave the commercial world and are taken home, they are more difficult to recycle due to the way in which domestic waste is sorted. The sorting machines at the recycling stations bounce light off the mixed plastics in order to identify suitability for recycling, but as this doesn’t work with black, it means the pots get sent to landfill or incineration units. According to Which? Gardening Magazine, there are about 500 million black plastic pots in circulation in the UK, but that’s about to decrease significantly thanks to a Midlands based company who have developed the taupe

coloured pots which will be widely used this year. The company are planning on producing around 100 million per year, which is great news for gardeners as it means they can be recycled in your domestic plastics collection bin (it’s obviously better to reuse them first if you can). As we clean out our sheds and greenhouses for spring, there’ll often be a pile of black pots sat in the corner ‘just in case’, but don’t be tempted to throw this into the general waste bin, but instead think about taking them down to your local HTA garden centre to be recycled (give them a call first to check they have a take back scheme as many of the big chains unfortunately don’t).

Many of our plants come from Europe and I guess these will still come across the water in black pots (after all, it’s a great way to rid your country of waste plastic) but I imagine as we buy more British grown or grown-on stock, that may change. We’ll also be reducing the number of road miles our plants travel by buying home grown stock. On the flip side, we are a small island with limited space to grow plants in the quantity we need them (and at the speed we demand them) so I guess the next step should be to work with our continental suppliers to demand our plants are supplied in none black pots.

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS JOIN AHEAD OF EXAM SEASON January proved to be another very busy month at Young Minds Matter with a new influx of students joining us with the aim of improving their chances of achieving good grades as we head towards the exam season – at the time of writing, just 11 school weeks to go before the first exams! In addition to new students, we are pleased to welcome a number of new teaching staff – qualified and experienced secondary teachers (one of whom is an examiner for AQA) who are supporting our older students in core subjects. With subject specialisms in a range of subjects from science to design technology, our teachers are able to offer support across the curriculum. Our pay-as-you-go SATs provision

REDS FILM RAISES £30K FOR HOSPITAL CHARITY More than £30,000 has so far been raised for Barnsley Hospital’s ‘Tiny Hearts’ appeal thanks to a featurelength film documenting Barnsley Football Club’s greatest ever achievement. The debut production of GRAFT Agency – comprising of six lifelong Barnsley FC supporters - tells the story of how their Football Club’s promotion to the Premier League for the first time in its 110-year history brought joy and belief back to a town that was in the midst of economic ruin. A decade on from one of the biggest political disputes in 20th century Britain, the Town of Barnsley – decimated by the yearlong Miner’s Strike of 1984 – began to believe again. After having its 16 pits closed by the Conservative Government, more than 30,000 people were left unemployed and tens of thousands of people impacted. Poverty in the town soared as, naturally, the club’s attendances plummeted. Barnsley F.C. kept on fighting in the second division and when Danny Wilson was appointed player-manager in 1994, things began to change. A squad of players that were brought together from non-league, Premier League reserve teams and the club’s academy went on to play football likened to that only seen on the beaches of Rio and achieved promotion to the

Premier League against the odds in 1997, thus reinvigorating their benighted town. The Film’s Director, Chris Johnson, said; “This isn’t just a film about Barnsley for Barnsley F.C. supporters, it’s a very emotive documentary that covers one of the biggest and most devastating political events of the 20th century, as well as a club and its town battling against all odds. “We were always certain that any profits from this film would go back into the town,” he added. “Myself and all of the lads who worked so hard to create Daydream Believers are incredibly proud of the money raised. The appeal is one close to to my heart, so for us to be able to give them more than £30,000 so far is

a proud achievement for us.” Chief Football Writer at The Times, Henry Winter, describes this debut production as “A remarkable story of fighting against the odds – on and off the pitch.” whilst Sky Sports reviewed the feature as “A perfect account of social history.” whilst thousands across the borough have voiced their admiration of the documentary. The money raised came from a series of sell-out screenings at the Lamproom Theatre, Barnsley Civic and Penistone Paramount as well as DVD sales and a bucket collection. Barnsley Market is officially one of the top 10 markets in the country following a public vote. The vote was part of an awards scheme ran by the country’s leading market authority - The National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) – which asked market shoppers to vote for Britain’s favourite market. Despite only being open for a few days when voting opened in November, Barnsley Market was named in the top 10 by the public. It was then visited by a panel of industry expert judges, who praised Barnsley Market for its range of stalls, layout, traders and investment. Despite missing out on the top award, Barnsley Market placed 6th overall, meaning it is officially one of the best in the country.  Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re delighted that Barnsley Market has been named
