Welcome to the Granny November edition Norbag
November already… Christmas is edging closer and closer and we can’t wait! We love Christmas here at Together & Local and Rother Local. It means we can stick the tree up, trim the office like Santa’s Grotto and do a bit of Secret Santa. However, we aren’t quite near Christmas yet, so we’ve tried to make this
issue as festive-free as we can…but we couldn’t resist popping in some holiday cheer! This month, we introduce our brand new columnist and everyone’s favourite Grandma- Granny Norbag! She hopes to be the next Ariana Grandma, you know… We also look at mobile hairdresser Zoe Sutton, who absolutely loves
creating new hairstyles and hair colours. Not forgetting our monthly What’s On section, the Sunday League Football Round-up and we have a sneak peek into Growing Wild’s outdoor nursery. So make sure you have your biscuits and a cup of tea, turn the heating on and get cosy with your favourite monthly paperzine. Enjoy!

I can’t believe we are almost into December. This year seems to be going far too fast. I think once you hit 80, the years seem to go by so much quicker too. I’ve been visiting lots of schools this month and the children are all so excited about Christmas. The shops are full of all the latest ‘must have’ toys and gadgets and the magazines have lots of articles about what to cook, where to party and how to look perfect for the big day. I feel exhausted already and it’s not even December yet! But it got me thinking about what gift I could give to my followers this Christmas. What special something could I give to you all that will give you endless joy throughout the Yuletide season? The answer is... a Christmas song. I started straight away working on a song with my producer William Price at Tunedin Music Studios in Rotherham. First we tried lots of covers, Slade, Shakin Stevens and Wizard, but none seemed right. Will even said that the world wasn’t quite ready for my high notes on the version of Mariah Carey’s 'All I want For Christmas Is You’ that we tried. So we started to write an original song. Will asked me to think of a time when I’d had a very interesting festive season. The memories of Christmas Eve 2018, when Father Christmas turned up at my bungalow and asked me to help him deliver lots of Christmas presents, came straight into my mind. Filled with early Christmas spirit, we then wrote and recorded the song ‘Under The Christmas Tree’ in a couple of days. Once the song was mixed, Will realised that something was missing.... The magic ingredient to any Christmas classic - a super choir of children. I turned straight
away to my friends at St Bede’s School in Kimberworth, Rotherham. Mr Sharp and Mrs McDool quickly gathered their ‘Young Voices Choir’ and they learned the song in just a few short days. Here are a couple of pictures from the recording session at the school. Everyone agreed that he choir added some amazing vocals to the song. I might be 91 but surrounded by these amazing children, I felt so young, happy and full of energy. So this Christmas as you spend time with your friends and family, I want you to listen to my song and think about the older people in your lives. Not every 91 year-old is as fit and active as me. Some older people have limited mobility and feel cut off from the outside world. What could you do to make a difference? Pop round to see them for a catch up, invite them round to your home for a mince pie, write that Christmas card and hand deliver it or simply pick up the telephone and call them. I’m certain they’d love to hear from you and learn all about the adventures you’ve had in 2019. Toodle pip until next time my lovelies. Hello all! I've been so busy since my last column. Preparing for Christmas is proving to be stressful (even though I started really early) and the fact I'm still hearing fireworks now that Bonfire Night is over is a bit annoying too. However, I'm quite proud to let you all know that I've now got my first passport! I've never been out of the country, so I'm excited to see what it's all about, with Disneyland Paris looking like the first adventure on the cards. The interview was scheduled to be in Leeds and while it's not too far away, it's always a bit of an extravaganza when I'm due to travel somewhere. We set off over an hour prior, knowing traffic and parking would be interesting and also due to the fact we'd most probably get lost. But to our amazement, we arrived early, found a parking spot, grabbed an (over expensive) coffee, had the interview, then got straight out the centre and back to Barnsley. I was in shock! I expected it to be a Chuckle Brothers scene trying to find the interview building, an Impractical Jokers 'You Laugh You Lose' challenge in the ever so quiet waiting room and even a Simpsons moment getting lost on the way back to 'base'. So actually, I'm not sure if I'm proud of the passport or the overall
successful journey to the interview building? However, it's all complete and I'm now able to travel the world! Well, we'll not go for a massively long flight yet, Disneyland Paris will do. What's that? It's how much to go?!?! Oh...maybe my next column is going to be money saving tips... See you soon, Georgina x

Pat’s Garden ‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year!’ so the song tells us. True, in some aspects; less work to do in our gardens, no mowing or weeding (hurray!). Looking through the window and seeing the structure of plants and trees is more pleasant than spotting the next batch of dead-heading, or leaf collecting (or chasing!) or defiant weeds. Also a chance to imagine the possibilities for next season. But, what to do with all that spare time? There is only so much reading and planning you can do before it becomes a chore. I find myself itching to be outdoors and ‘doing’. So, after some thought and another cup of coffee, I decided to don my boots and extra layers, and see what Mother Nature could offer to teach me in my neighbourhood. I am rather lucky to live in a countryside village, with many places to wander. So I went with my camera to investigate. It’s funny, but this time of the year is perfect for views, bare branches giving glimpses of how other people arrange their gardens, uneven, empty patches of soil making me wonder what was and will be there? Evergreens giving a burst of greenery to bleak trunks of deciduous trees. The holly bush with its glorious red berries against the perfectly formed leaves, now that is festive! This peaceful time also lends to spying birds which have remained hidden amongst the foliage for so long. My old friend the robin, blackbirds, blue tits, great tits, even sparrows look adorable perching on the bushes. So back home with rosy cheeks and a spring in my step, I have renewed energy and ideas to keep me busy. Notebook and coffee and I’m set.
To Do List - Gather holly and other greenery for house decorations; garlands, wreaths etc. - Next walk; gather any seed heads still remaining on roadsides or fields; give something new a go! - Ask friends which are their favourite plants; presents! - Get friends together for a walk; share ideas. - Check nurseries for festive plants for indoors. - Buy more coffee! Now my notebook is full of ideas and my brain is bristling to get going with my crafts. I feel a family gathering on the cards! Walking, picking, shopping, designing, creating, re-creating (it usually takes more than one go!). The more the merrier to share ideas and have fun making decorations and memories. Granny Norbag On my visit to Worsbrough Common Primary School I got to have a good catch up with Rebecca Paddock the Head of School. Cooking Corner Wet and windy, frosty and cold, wet and cold, frosty and windy! What wonderful weather for the time of year! The one saving grace is the choice of delicious, heart-warming 'stick to your ribs' recipes that can warm your cockles. Nothing beats getting home from work to have mouth-watering aromas filling the house, or the drips of condensation chasing down the kitchen windows (ok, maybe not so thrilling). Leaving behind the dark, damp evening outside, to enter our caves of contentment, the lights, the heat, the slippers and the cosy rooms, wrapping us in Autumnal warmth. So what tickles your tastebuds on a cold, dark night? Curries? Stews? Or are you a pudding and custard fan? It always seems forgivable to ditch your diet at this time of year (got to keep warm in the Winter). I know, I know, you've done so well all Summer with your salads and such. And I guess you can still continue counting calories if that's your thing, but I for one relish the idea of a few extra calories to see me through til Spring! I mean with so many opportunities to celebrate at this time of
year, it would be rude to refuse to par-take of the odd hotdog, or to sample a favourite traditional meal at a friend's house. Luckily for me, I have a couple of family birthdays coming up! So, cakes and buns and my daughter's famous cheesecake will probably leave me full of sugar and excited for the next opportunity- not that I have a sweet tooth or anything! See that's the thing, I also crave savouries, more so in colder weather. My all time favourite has to be...stew and dumplings! Simple, tasty, warming, filling. Ok, I admit suedes and turnips still beat me hands down, hence, the husband with his muscles to peel and dice those. Then my hands get to work on the dumplings! I am no 'masterchef' but I've never had a complaint about my dumplings! (Keep it clean people!) Yes, they're not the fluffiest, and no, slimmers would not appreciate them, but for 'fill ya belly' contented tummies, I'm your girl! Now, I'm not saying we need to gain a
stone a month over the Winter season, there are amazing veggie and lower calorie alternatives, rices, pastas, to name a couple. I must admit it's the sauces that are the devil in disguise, but switch the creamy ones for tomato or vegetable based ones and 'Bob's your uncle', a healthy, warm, tummy tamer. Now before I forget, it's also time to start your list of wants. No, not to Santa (not yet anyway), your list of ingredients for your (dare I say it?) erm, seasonal fayre! Ok, Christmas delicacies. There, I said it. Time spent now, planning and making lists will definitely save time and stresses later. I'm not saying start baking yet, but preparation and research (food fads, allergies etc) can all ease the marathon ahead. So while you steel yourself to start your notes, put the kettle on, draw the curtains, light the candles and treat yourself to a homemade biscuit (for energy of course).

Barnsley Council NEWS ROUNDUP Teamwork makes the dream work to achieve tidy town centre Volunteers from across Barnsley came together for the latest town centre clean-up event at the end of last month. A team of 17 volunteers from Henry Boot Construction, the Alhambra Shopping Centre and the council's Safer Neighbourhood Service, Parks Services and Neighbourhood Services participated in the event at the rear of the Alhambra and in the surrounding underpasses. In total, 25 black bags were filled with green waste. Four bags were filled with general litter and a large amount of tree waste was collected, which will be recycled. Graffiti and stickers from two out of the three underpasses was removed before the underpasses were cleaned. The third underpass will be cleaned at a future date. Elsecar Park one of country’s favourite Elsecar Park has once again been named one of the country’s favourites. The park has picked up the esteemed title of ‘Nation’s Favourite Park’ along with ten other finalists from across the UK. This is the third People's Choice Award win for Elsecar Park. Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, the award aims to
exhibition of new innovative content. Gaia Earth exhibition coming to Barnsley Bright Nights A gargantuan replica model of our planet Earth is coming to Barnsley as part of Barnsley Bright Nights the town centre’s free winter lights festival. Art installation Gaia– previously on display at London’s Natural History Museum - will be showcased
for free in the main atrium of Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane campus between Thursday 28 and Saturday 30 November. The artwork is based on how Earth appears when viewed from space by NASA. It's an exact, scaled replica of the planet – but 1.8million times smaller. Each centimetre of the internally-lit sculpture details 18km of the Earth’s surface. It measures a whopping seven metres in diameter, and features 120dpi HD detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. Barnsley Bright Nights will launch on Thursday 28 November at 6pm with a light parade, fireworks display and traditional lights switch-on. From there, the public will be able to explore a range of installations, projections and entertainment outside the town hall and in Mandela Gardens, The Cooper Gallery, St Mary’s Church, The Barnsley Chronicle Offices, The Civic, Churchfield Peace Gardens, Market Kitchen and Library @ the Lightbox. Gaia will run between 6.15pm-8.30pm on Thursday 28 November, and between 5pm-8.30pm on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November.

Set up stall at Worsbrough for Christmas There’s an exciting and unique opportunity for stall holders at the new Worsbrough Mill Christmas market. Jolly Tap on the Arcade celebrates cask ale week pubs. This year we marked the occasion by having a different ale on each day at a discounted price. The aim of this was to encourage people to try cask ales that they may not normally try. As a result we have welcomed new customers and some of our regulars have tried new beers. According to Steph a whole generation have been brought up on kegged beer and have been put off by the taste. “Continental lager does well in keg but many people enjoy cask ale and look for the hand pumps for the perfect pint. Many of our
customers used to be lager drinkers, originally put off by kegged beers in the 1990s. They have become cask ale drinkers more recently. Realising that cask ale is a cause for celebration”. On a Friday evening between 6 and 7.30 a group of people conversing, laughing and enjoying cask conditioned ale by the pint and half. Many agreeing that the consumer is enjoying the best beer in a generation. In a small pub in Barnsley the beer is big. Cask conditioned ale is back if ever it even left and let’s drink to that!

Growing Wild – Barnsley’s first outdoor nursery! Growing Wild Outdoor Nursery is the realisation of the hopes, dreams, trials and tribulations of myself and fellow outdoor specialist Lindsey Bielby. After many knock-backs, trying to set up an outdoor nursery independently, we decided to join forces and have one final attempt. I had started a new job at Barnsley College in September 2017, teaching on the BA Early Years and set up a visit to Wigfield Farm, one of the college’s sites, with a view to finding an outdoor space to work with my students. As well as arranging some opportunities as planned, I couldn’t help thinking what a fantastic location this would be for our nursery and so had to ask the question. To my surprise, it was met with enthusiasm and support, a refreshing change from the negativity we had come across on our journey so far. If we then fastforward 18 months to May 2019, through many more ups and downs, tears and tantrums, red tape and very nearly accepting another job offer, the day came when the email landed in our in-box … ‘The proposed lease between Barnsley College and Growing Wild Outdoor Nursery has been approved …’ I remember going through a whole spectrum of emotions, from shock and disbelief, to excitement and giddiness and then shear fear! This thing was now real, and we had to get on and actually
do it! I had stopped mentioning the progress to friends and hoped they wouldn’t ask – it had been literally years since I set out on this journey and almost embarrassing that nothing had come of my efforts. We signed the lease on 23rd May and began work almost immediately, pretty overwhelmed by the task that lay ahead of us. Having borrowed a small amount each from the bank to cover the cost of resources, Lindsey and I knew that aside from the fencing and paving (thanks Andrew and Matt), the majority of the work was to be done by us (with help from some very kind family and friends). We drew out some designs, ordered a few tonnes of bark, gravel and sand and picked up our shovels. It was a race to the finish line for our open day on 1st September which was an amazing day with sixty families coming to look around. Ofsted came for their initial visit on September 23rd and we opened our doors on the 31st. We now have three new members of staff, twelve children and counting … (Janet Packer)

What’s On Barnsley Markets 1982 - 1987 Barnsley Civic On now – January 2020 Barnsley Market has formed an integral part of the town’s life for centuries. Though the market has changed appearance and location many times one thing has always remained consistent; the people. Many locals will have fond memories of the traders and characters who frequented the market over the years. One of those well-known characters was amateur photographer Harry Brookes. Over a period of five decades, Harry documented the changing face of the market, its traders and the shoppers. His love of the market community and interest in local history led Harry to take over 1000 photographs, many of which were donated to Barnsley Archives. This exhibition displays a selection of Harry’s pictures which span a six year period of 1982 – 1987.
North: Fashioning Identity Barnsley Civic On now – 21 December North: Fashioning Identity explores the way the North of England is depicted, constructed and celebrated in select photographs, artworks and fashion collections. The show brings together visions of
the North, unpicking themes that appear regularly in design and media. It considers truth, myth and the spaces in-between. Featuring over 100 photographs, alongside fashion garments and artworks, the exhibition positions documentary work dating back over eighty years next to more recent style media. This exhibition is both about the style and cultural heritage of the North, and the ways in which the ideals of it – the clothes, the music, the smells, the houses, the men, the women, the communities – have spread and, in turn, been shaped by others through visual representations. It is about the evolution of tradition, character and identity as much as it is about photography and

Holly Tandy brings out new music
Tarn came together again for floods I thought it was very apt that in the month we celebrated Remembrance Sunday, the Tarn came together like the good old days to help each other out in the terrible floods. Obviously it was very different circumstances to war time, but the sense of community spirit was the same and it was great to see.
I was one of the unlucky ones stranded in Meadowhall - couldn’t get out and ended up spending the night laid on a booth in the Oasis! Nightmare! Hopefully your house wasn’t affected. I’ve seen some horrendous videos on Facebook. Stay safe in this bad weather.
Market Kitchen now open
Has tha been down to new Market Kitchen in Tarn centre yet? If tha’s not, tha’s missing a reyt treat! It’s got allsorts in there. I’m a big fan of a cooked breakfast so I’ve been going to the three cafes in there for months – but now there’s Indian, Thai, coffee, dessert, woodfired pizza, vegan, Balkan and even rotisserie duck! The best bit, though, is a massive bar
offering mint views of the town centre. I’ve had a few pints in there and I have to say, it’s becoming my favourite place for a swift one. There’s even live singers on a Saturday night to add a bit of entertainment. There’s summat for everyone and it really is a welcome addition to our Tarn.
Coffee Boy to open in December Great news – another new place is opening in Tarn centre before Crimbo! I know what you’re thinking – do we really need another coffee shop?! And I’d agree – but I’ve been doing a bit of digging and I’ve found out that Coffee Boy does much more than coffee! It does all sorts of food and drink; paninis, pizzas, ice cream, smoothies
– you name it! Coffee Boy will have the big unit that used to be Carphone Warehouse opposite where Thornton’s used to be. Things are really progressing now and I think it’s about time we showed some positivity about what’s happening in Barnsley!
It’s always good to see one of our own doing well, init? Barnsley lass Holly Tandy, who shot to fame on the X Factor, has brought out a new single after nearly two years of working on her music. The 18-year-old from Darton has released ‘Small Talk’ – available to
download now. She’s a cracking voice on her has young Holly. She’s a real inspiration to the young uns in Tarn, showing what can be achieved with a bit of hardwork and dedication. Good luck, Holly. Imagine if tha got Christmas number one?
Alhambra to light up for Christmas I love Christmas light switch-ons me, proper gets me in mood for the festivities! What you’ll learn about me, is that my favourite food of all time is pigs in blankets. Nowt compares to them. Nowt at all. If I had choice, my last meal on this planet would be pigs in blankets with a few roasters on side. Any road – the Alhambra will be
turning on its Christmas lights on Saturday 30 November this year from 9am in the morning. They’ve got a full day of Christmas activities planned including opening their Santa’s Grotto. Barnsley College to run new technical courses in 2020 Barnsley College is offering exciting new technical courses (T Levels) in Construction, Digital and Education and Childcare. T Levels are a new two-year qualification, equivalent to three A Levels, for 16 to 18 year olds who would prefer a more technical education when they come to College, rather than following a purely academic pathway or a workbased apprenticeship. Barnsley College is the only college in South Yorkshire to be chosen to run the new T Level courses, which will start in September 2020. T Level qualifications are a combination of classroom or workshop-based learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience and will take two years to complete. They provide a mixture of technical knowledge and practical skills specific to the student’s chosen industry or
occupation; an industry placement of at least 45 days; relevant maths, English and digital skills, and common workplace skills. Students will be able to study T Levels in Construction, Digital and Education and Childcare from September 2020. A further 22 courses will be rolled out in stages from 2021, which will cover subjects such as finance and accounting, engineering and manufacturing, and creative and design. David Akeroyd, Vice Principal Technical and Professional Education at Barnsley College, said: “We’re really excited and proud to have been chosen by the Department for Education to be the only college in South Yorkshire and one of only 54 colleges in the country to offer T Levels from September 2020. “We have fantastic
partnerships with employers across the South Yorkshire region and we are in a strong position to be able to deliver these qualifications which will provide our students with an opportunity to gain the technical knowledge and valuable work experience that employers look for when recruiting new employees.” Potential new students will have the opportunity to find out about T Levels and the wide range of courses on offer at the Barnsley College and Barnsley Sixth Form College Open Day on Saturday 23 November, from 11.00am to 2.00pm. Rated outstanding by Ofsted, Barnsley College and Barnsley Sixth Form College offer
education for everyone; including full and part-time vocational courses, A Levels, technical courses (T Levels) and apprenticeships. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak to tutors, tour buildings, attend presentations and have a go at practical activities at this hands-on, interactive event. They can also see the fantastic facilities and find out about the range of support
services available. I recently caught up with Mr Sitch the Headteacher of Stradbroke Primary School in Sheffield. He served me endless cups of tea, with biscuits, and he gave me this exclusive interview. How many children attend your school? Approximately 500 children attend Stradbroke Primary School. Which member of staff makes you laugh the most? My deputy, Mr Rash. He's infectious. How long have you been the Headteacher here? I have been the head here for three years. What is your favourite playtime game/activity? I like to umpire the cricket at playtime. I barely lift a finger. What is your favourite vegetable? It's guac to be avocado! What star sign are you? Cancer, but I try not to be shellfish. What is your favourite colour? Red... but I also enjoy white. Eastenders or Emmerdale? Coronation Street Stars or stripes? Stars. Stripes are pointless. Favourite number? This is odd, but it's 7. Can you swim? Yes, I used to be a lifeguard. One day somebody spotted a dolphin in the water. Shortly after, I found another porpoise. Favourite biscuit? Any with cheese. Caerphilly does it. Favourite holiday destination? I can't decide, it must be either Chiang Mai or Ko Samui, it's a Thai. Early bird or night owl? Both, toucan play that game.
Favourite Disney film? Lilo and Sitch Favourite season of the year? Football season. What sport/team/sporting individual do you support? Sheffield United. Latest fixtures were decimated by the recent heavy rainfall with local authorities closing all pitches. There was only one fixture played in the league (a Premier Division fixture) - Birdwell Rovers fc won by a single goal at Worsbrough Common fc. Birdwell Rovers player Kyle Wyatt (pictured) with the only goal. The Common were previously unbeaten in the league and this moves Rovers into 4th place remaining unbeaten in the league. Current Premier Division leaders are Cobcar S&SC fc (pictured). A new look team who finished last season rock bottom of the Premier Division. The Sports are also the league’s leading goal scorers with an impressive 24 goals in just 5 league games. Honeywell fc remain unbeaten in all competitions, 100% in the league and well placed in second
position. These two clubs were due to face each other in a tasty looking fixture on Sunday 17th November. This may have to be rearranged as Honeywell have commitments in the County FA Sunday Senior Cup with a is Round 3 tie away against Rangers fc. Good luck to them and Commercial Inn who are away at AFP fc in the same competition. Same goes to other Barnsley clubs representing the league in Round 3 of the County FA Sunday Junior Cup next Sunday; fc Portcullis, Birdwell Rovers and Dale Juniors. In Division 1, Northside Lodge WMC have extended their lead at the top of the division. An impressive 21 points from 7 games whilst running up 34 goals, the highest across both Divisions. Top scorer Craig Whitaker (pictured) has chipped
in with 8 league goals and 3 in the cup. Lodge have now created an imposing 8 point gap over a cluster of 4 teams with only 1 point separating them; Darfield Cross Keys fc, Cudworth Star fc, Carlton Athletic fc and Portcullis fc. Dale Juniors (pictured) will join that pack if they win their game in hand. Juniors are another club who have managed to turnaround their fortunes. They finished

The Super Reds are staying up. “Tha what? What’s this pudding on about?” I hear you cry. I know it seems daft, particularly as we sit bottom of the league at the time of writing after a 4-2 trouncing at the hands of Stoke City, who had been propping up the table prior to beating us. We were all gutted when Daniel Stendel got the boot. I’ve only just stopped crying about it if I’m honest. What that bloke did for this side will go down in history. He was a man of the people, Mr Stendel, and I for one would take him back at Oakwell in a heartbeat. But results hadn’t been good. There’s no two ways about it. And I know they haven’t exactly been positive since he left. We’ve only won once in the league all season, on the first day against Fulham. Our goal difference is appalling and we sit five points adrift of safety at the time of writing. But – that’s the point for me, my fellow Oakwellers. Five points is nowt. The table shows we’re currently the worst side in the league. But it doesn’t tell the full story. There’s potential
there. And there’s definitely potential to string a set of results together. What it needs is signings in January. And my sources close to the club tell me there will be players brought in during January. Who will massively help the cause. Ideally players with Championship experience. And I’ve seen summat I like in this Reds side, Barnsley fans, and it gives me hope. There’s a fight there. A fight that has seen us come close to beating some of the top sides in the league, had luck been on our side. Look at the draw away to West Brom. The draw against Derby. The draws against Bristol City and Swansea. All games we were unlucky not to win. We can’t rely on luck in this game, but there’s no getting away from the fact it helps. And our luck will turn. We will get a few wins on the board. We will have a good run. What’s important for us as fans is to stick by the gaffer, whoever that may be in the long run, and stick behind our players, too. I’m not fond of the owners. But if we make enough noise,
there’s a chance they’ll listen to our cries and get the cheque book out. They want us to be playing Championship football – so it’s time for them to put their money where their mouth is and chuck some money at the squad so that aim becomes a reality. I’ve got every faith the Super Reds can turn this around. We’ve gone on runs before, we can do it again. What it needs is for us to carry on supporting the lads and avoid being fickle as we have done in the past. I don’t wanna watch us in League One next season. And I’m sure you’re the same. Reds in the Community Off the pitch, the next generation of Barnsley heroes are coming through thanks to Reds in the Community. Reds in the Community have been delivering the Premier League-funded Premier League all-stars course at The Ellis Primary School in Hemingfield. Incorporating English, Maths, PE and PSHE lessons, the programme looks to teach pupils important life skills such as the importance of being fair and respectful – as well as football skills. Year four teacher Miss Cook
said: “It’s going really well. The children seem to be engaging in it really well. They’re always looking forward to the sessions. “It’s given me some new ideas for teaching PE. I like how it’s focused on values very much. Each week we’ve had a different value and the children have really responded to that. “We remind them of their values when they’re doing other things in the classrooms. We remind them about being connected, being ambitious, striving and not giving up and it links really well with the learning behaviours that we try and promote through our school.” Meanwhile, two Barnsley FC stars attended holiday camps during the recent half-term holidays. Brad Collins and Aapo Halme gave up their time to meet participants at the Oakwell Indoor Centre. Brad and Aapo, who joined Barnsley in the summer, took
part in a question and answer with Halloween Dance and Soccer Camps participants. The duo then posed for pictures and signed autographs for attendees. Dennis Leman, Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Community Liason Executive, was also present at the visit. He said: “It was very good and very positive. I think players have a brilliant impact, especially on the young kids, and that is their role as ambassadors for the game. The impact a player has is immeasurable. Barnsley have been pretty high in terms of player involvement. The players when they come are really good ambassadors for the game. “Whether they’re young or old, the Football Club is that focal point of the community. The work that Community Trusts or Community Foundations do across the country, and particularly at Barnsley, is excellent.”
