Meet the 6 new bars and restaurants bringing new flavours to the town centre Local people have been crying out for a revitalised food and drink scene in Barnsley town centre for a number of years – and earlier this year, they got their wish. In the last four months alone, Barnsley has seen a flurry of new bar and restaurant openings, each bringing something different to the town’s day time, evening and night time offer. Here, we meet the six new businesses putting Barnsley’s food and drink scene on the map…
THE SUPPER CLUB Barnsley has been crying out for a quality pizza joint – and The Supper Club was the second of the three to open in quick succession following last year’s popular 00Bar. It offers create your own pizzas with some fantastic offers on to ensure you don’t break the bank, with its varied bar menu offering more to punters than just tasty pizza.

April marked the opening of all you can eat Brazilian grill Favela – bringing an authentic taste of South America to Barnsley. With hundreds of five star reviews on Facebook, the town’s answer to Leeds’ Fazenda is quickly become a popular destination for a lunchtime or evening meal out – and is now one of the top ranked restaurants in the whole of Barnsley.
Offering over 50 gins and a varied real ale menu, microbar Tipsy Cow is now the place to start a big night out or go for a quiet one with friends and partners. Gins include strawberry, Parma Violet and Rhubarb, with taster trays letting you sample some of the region’s best real ales.
EVOO Adopted Barnsley man Jaz Bopari – originally from Glasgow – has tantalised the taste buds of locals for years with restaurants Grille and Chilli. Jaz was one of the first restaurant owners to open a steakhouse outside of London – and he’s the first man to bring Neapolitan pizza to Barnsley when he opened EVOO in May. But what is Neapolitan pizza? It originates in Naples – it’s light, it’s airy, it’s easy on the stomach and is manufactured in an authentic 400 degree, wood fired oven that cooks it in 90 seconds. Once you taste it you’ll be back for more.

The former 8oz Burger –Backyard BBQ is an authentic American Smokehouse restaurant that’s the brainchild of local restaurateur Dan Sharp. Dan – who also owns 00Bar – has kept favourites from the 8oz menu with some excellent additions including ribs, chicken and nachos. The industrial smoker in the restaurant provides great tastes of America at affordable prices that will keep you coming back for more.
Pavilion opened its doors at Gateway Plaza in June. Brought by the owners of nightclubs Che and Coco, it offers a different vibe to a bustling night out. It’s a relaxed and comfy venue, that offers a varied menu including breakfast, tapaas, gourmet burgers and themed nights that include tapas Tuesdays. There really is something for everyone.
Tarn Talk Costa del Tarn Has this been the longest summer in history? It’s been bloody warm ant it? I’ve been wearing shorts and a t-shirt every day since end of April – and so has everyone else in Costa del Tarn! Not that we’re complaining at Independent and Local HQ – it makes our job easier when we’re out delivering these mags! As long as we’ve got plenty of Mars ice creams, we’re happy! Barnsley town centre is buzzing at the minute, isn’t it? And it’s not just cos of the weather. I don’t know if you’ve seen, but there’s been a dozen new bars and restaurants that have opened since April (you can read about them in the magazine, they’re top quality). Let’s be reyt – the Tarn’s needed a boost for a while, and I think it’s got it now. It means that Barnsley is becoming the place to be if you want a meal or night out, and that can only be a good thing. Rumours are that more are on the way – there’s already a new Brazilian coming in September to add to the list. Get yoursen out to try them if you haven’t already.
The Glass Works taking shape
Boxing hero has chance to make history There’s a massive opportunity for local boxer Josh Wale coming up next month. Brampton lad Josh fights at The Metrodome on October 5 – and if he wins – he’ll become a mandatory challenger for a world title, meaning he’ll be the first Barnsley man in history to fight for one. A world title! A Barnsley lad! Imagine that – what an achievement! He’ll be in running for sports personality of the year! On thi bike Anthony Joshua, hardest man in country is from Tarn!
Barnsley primed for promotion Can the Super Reds get back up to the Championship this year? I reckon they’re in with a shout, tha knows. This new manager is saying all the right things, and even though there hasn’t been a load of new signings through the door at Oakwell, the squad is young, eager and key players are tied down to contracts. It means that the squad will be stable and hopefully, if they play a good brand of football, it won’t be long before Barnsley are playing Championship footy again. You Reds! I just wanna take this opportunity to say a massive well
What does everyone think to The Glass Works development? It’s starting to make good progress init? I know a lot’s been said about it costing a lot of money, but surely it can only be a good thing? The markets are opening this year and rumour has it that more new shops and restaurants will be confirmed soon. I can’t wait to get down there once it’s finished. I know Tarn’s a building site at the minute – but it will all be worth it in the end. The new library opens next year – it’s gonna be packed full of state-of-the-art equipment by the sounds – meaning our library will be one of the best in the country. Sounds fancy!

Controversy over gyratory Are any of you on Facebook? There’s been some interesting comments regarding the development of a new gyratory system on Dodworth Road and the popular Penny Pie Park. It will see traffic from the motorway travelling towards the town centre diverted around the new system from the Broadway traffic lights, with vehicles coming out of town using the existing Dodworth Road, which will be made one-way on a four-lane section past Horizon Community College. The traffic lights will still be there, but there will be a new road built to cut round a section of Pogmoor Road with no right turn onto Broadway for traffic coming from the motorway, meaning drivers will have to go around a gyratory and back up Dodworth Road. It basically means that some of Penny Pie Park will have to be built on – which is a shame to lose some of that greenspace. I’ve spent hours walking our dog there. But, on the positive side, have you ever sat in traffic at rush hour coming off the motorway? Hopefully the gyratory will ease all that chuffin traffic. But we’ll have to see!
Tribute to Kes author Ar Kes has to be one of the most iconic things to come out of Tarn – so it’s only reyt that its creator is honoured, init? Barry Hines, who penned A Kestrel for a Knave 50 years ago, is to be honoured with a statue somewhere in the town centre. It will be a fitting tribute to a great man – and one that we should all get involved with, because let’s be honest, Barry helped put our town on the map. He’s a proper legend. Helping the local business boom WITHIN BARNSLEY, THANKS TO THE LOCAL BUSINESS BOOM, THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE SELFEMPLOYED COMMUNITY OF NEW BUSINESSES – INCLUDING SOLE TRADERS AND PARTNERSHIPS. A STEM OF NEW BOOKKEEPING AGENCIES ARE EXAMPLES OF BUSINESSES THAT HAVE SPROUTED FROM THIS BOOM. service). What is the role of a certified bookkeeper and how does it differentiate to people recording their own books? Jennifer: “The role of a bookkeeper is to record historical transactions on a client’s behalf, to prepare financial statements, to submit VAT returns and self-assessments to HMRC – again, on behalf of the client. Bookkeepers also transfer manual accounts into computerized accounts, and help set up new businesses. Certified bookkeepers differentiate from ordinary people because they can help clients pay less tax as they know what is tax deductible. For new businesses it is better that they have a licensed bookkeeper as these bookkeepers know key tax dates, tax deductible expenses and how to use professional software such as Sage One” In your opinion, how does accounting differ to bookkeeping? Jennifer: “Accountants are more qualified, deal with Limited companies (LTD), usually specify in one area of accountancy training; dependent upon which area they would like to train in. As a result, they are higher qualified than bookkeepers, so prices are higher for all types of companies. There is no difference in bookkeeping and accountancies for sole traders and partnerships [that want to invest], apart from the prices that are charged. Bookkeeping is generally cheaper for sole traders and partnerships.” Jennifer: “Bookkeepers record historical transactions, and accountants forecast future transactions.” Are there any rules or regulations to bookkeeping? Jennifer: “Yes, a bookkeeper has to be a licensed member of an accounting body, and also has to be regulated
As a newbie to the business industry, self-employers often become victims to failure by misunderstanding the steps to success when starting a new business. Relative competition for businesses in similar industries can be high, especially while novice sole traders and partnerships are attempting to spar with larger, renowned and trusted enterprises. Of course, it will be natural for consumers to be drawn more to the larger, successful competition. But, how do you avoid this as a small business –when the amount of small businesses is also increasing at the same time? General research suggests that 1 in 10 people are now registered as selfemployed; however, many of these people fail to recognise the importance of completing and updating their own business records. You could say that uncompleted business records are the equivalent to a broken compass; a business has no sense of direction. In much simpler terms, how can a business know if they’re breaking even/earning a profit without even taking note of their own income and expenditure? Without fulfilling a form of bookkeeping – or planning, many new businesses experience a downward spiral because they are spending more than they earn, due to not being able to calculate their financial statements. As a result, many inexperienced sole-traders find themselves making a loss and therefore failing. To cover this issue in more depth, I took it under my wing by interviewing AAT (Association of Accounting Technician) qualified bookkeeper, Jennifer Siobhan Weston – proprietor and founder of Financial Flair (bookkeeping and taxation
for AML (Anti-Money Laundering) supervision, fully insured and qualified and a have a Continuity of Practice in place. CPD (Continuing Professional Development) should also be in place so that a bookkeeper stays updated on new laws. Bookkeepers must finally be GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliant to protect customer data. ” What are the prices that bookkeepers generally offer? Jennifer: “It can vary, but I charge £12 an hour for business admin, £15 an hour for bookkeeping, from £100 for self-assessments, £50 for a VAT return, and £100 for a CIS return (Construction Industry Scheme).” One final question… Why is it recommended for new businesses to hire a qualified bookkeeper over trying to record financial statements themselves? Jennifer: “It is important because bookkeepers are aware of legal policies and taxation laws – you need to be aware of what is taxable and what isn’t taxable. MEAT AND FISH MARKET TO OPEN IN S E P T E M BE R Special event to mark official opening of first part of The Glass Works
Barnsley’s famous Meat and Fish Market will move into its new home in September – the first part of The Glass Works development to open to the public. The Meat and Fish traders will open for business in their new home on Saturday, 1 September, and the occasion will be marked with a grand opening. The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Steve Green, will cut the ribbon to declare the market open. There will also be a programme of family entertainment on offer. The rest of the market will closely follow the Meat and Fish traders into The Glass Works in early November – with details on the opening event to be announced soon. The opening of the Meat and Fish Market marks a major milestone in The Glass Works project. The £130m development of the town centre is starting to take shape – with some exciting news on the way later in the year. Already confirmed for The Glass Works is Cineworld, Superbowl UK and retail giant Next. The Library @ The Lightbox – offering much more than a traditional library – will open spring 2019. The work on the public square – an £8m project – is progressing well around Cheapside. Don’t forget that Barnsley Market is open for business as usual in May Day Green, Market Parade and Meat and Fish until the big move into The Glass Works.

Coalfields Festival 2018
Holly is a headline act Barnsley’s own STARLET and SINGER – Holly Tandy, 17, harmonized her heart away while performing her pop set list at the Coalfields Festival on Saturday 14th July 2018. The festival was absolutely honoured to have her as the headline act in the early evening; she brought her bubbly personality to the stage while hyping up her crowd with an array of summer tunes. For people who had entered the festival at the closing time (5pm) or slightly before (like us), it was an absolute treat for Holly to be performing when everyone was finally inside the festival… Nobody missed her astounding performance! After wandering around for a while, we managed to catch Holly relaxing after her performance. We took the opportunity to ask her some questions. So, our first question, in what way do you think your success on the X Factor has reflected back on your success since you’ve got home? “So its given me a platform now that I can work off of, I’m playing Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, quite a big musical; that’s in Blackpool in December. It’s basically got my name out there.” Is there anything you wish you did differently from auditioning to making it to the quarter finals? “I enjoyed all the progress, and obviously there’s bits that I’d love to do again. I said earlier, I said to my family, ‘I wish I could go and do it again knowing what I know now.’ But, I was just myself through it all, and I tried my best, and I did my best.” Of course, you did well to get so far, I bet it was a massive learning curve.
“Yeah, definitely, it was like… it went from 0 to 10 really quick. I had just left school, and then I was on red carpets and living in a big mansion in London and stuff so it was crazy.” Holly started singing from a young age, as most people who went to school with her will know. She has never been too shy to showcase her talent, evident from her getting the lead singing role in her Year 6 leaver’s production at Darton Primary School. Locally, she was well known for showcasing her singing talents in local pubs and other similar events as this one. However, her true rise to fame came when she applied for the hit TV competition, The Voice. When auditioning for the X Factor then, how did that come about? What was it like? “So I actually auditioned for The Voice, and I met a girl and she basically tagged one of the producers in one of my videos, and then all of a sudden I got a phone call saying ‘can you come down to London?’, and The Voice never went any further, they weren’t necessarily interested about me. I auditioned in London and then got put in front of the judges, it was crazy. Everything happens for a reason, really. If I’d have not gone for that other audition I wouldn’t be where I am now.” It’s fair to say she has become much more popular around Barnsley since then, especially after her reigning success on ITV’s very own X Factor programme in 2017. On the show, she contended graciously while strongly striving for the heavens with her angelic performance of ‘Love Me Harder’ by (Ariana Grande) in the quarter final stage of the competition. She had a massive fanbase in this area, a fanbase that still remains loyal after the competition ended. Have you felt closer to everyone in Barnsley then since you’ve come back? “Definitely. As a town, they’re amazing, their spirit is fantastic. When I was on the show, there was such a big following from Barnsley, and I
was really proud of that. I’m proud to be from Barnsley. Since I’ve come back I’ve been working with Primary schools, visiting the kids and stuff like that and its just lovely. I’m hoping to put Barnsley on the map, really.” One final question, if you had one piece of advice for the performers today or any performers out there that compliments success, what would it be? “I would say, you get out what you put in. And, its really about always improving yourself, and catering to your market. For me its young girls and I’ve got to think about that when I’m making music. But, just work hard really because you put in what you get back out, and I know no successful person that’s not grafted and worked hard. Before I went on the X Factor I was singing in working men’s clubs Friday, Saturday, Sunday night, so you’ve really got to work hard.” A big thank you to Holly Tandy for allowing us to have this interview, and we can’t wait to see how far she goes in the future. Family fun for all at festival ON SATURDAY THE 14TH OF JULY, AFTER MUCH ANTICIPATION, THE NEW AND IMPROVED COALFIELDS FESTIVAL WAS UNVEILED AT WOOLLEY CRICKET CLUB! THIS EVENT, USUALLY LOCAL TO DARTON, UNDERWENT A MASSIVE REVAMP COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS YEARS; INCLUDING THE ADDITION OF VIP TICKETS. FOR THESE REASONS, WE HAD VERY HIGH ANTICIPATION TO GET THE LOW DOWN ON THE NEW CHANGES ADDED THIS YEAR. The biggest change, of course, was the venue. Traditionally, the Coalfields Festival is usually held in Darton Village, in a large field just behind the post office. However, due to the festival being under new management, they chose to move it up to Woolley Grange instead, where they used the cricket field beside the Cricket club as their new location. One of the first things we noticed as we pulled up to the event was the ample parking, which before had
After we arrived, we were immediately drawn to the main stage by upbeat Little Mix music, and were met with the Little Mix tribute band; LMX Live. We spent time watching their incredibly choreographed dances, and listened to them sing beautifully; getting everyone on their feet and singing with them. The atmosphere was already so incredible, everyone got so involved with their performance and seemed to really enjoy themselves. Members Natasha Allen, Roseanna Auckland, Megan Bassett and Holly Mitchell really danced up a storm. Because we loved their act so much, we decided we wanted them to be the first act we interviewed that day, and proceeded to head backstage once their act was over. Amazingly, they agreed to allow us to ask them a few questions, and photograph them in their fantastic costumes. Does Your act have a different name? Or do you just go as a Little Mix tribute act? Megan: “We go as LMX Live, the Little 16
been an issue due to the limited spaces besides the old venue, and the more relaxed atmosphere. It’s a big change, really – going from a small enclosed space to a bigger area. It made the whole event appear more open. Plus, the main stage was much more central, allowing more space for people to be seated around it and walk around the venue. Definitely no fighting for a good space. As always, the field was set out in Mix tribute show for Barnsley. Which is amazing, because Little Mix are doing their own makeup line to be released in September, which is called LMX. We can definitely say we thought of it first!” So are you all local to Barnsley? Or in the area? Megan: “I live in Leeds now, Holly lives in Leeds, Holly’s originally from down South but then she moved up, so we’re all pretty much Yorkshire now.” So what made you want to perform at Coalfields today? Did you get invited or did you apply to come? Holly: “They invited us last year, and we were new as a group so we were just saying yes to everything, and it was one of the highlights of our year! And then when they invited us back this year, it was a no -brainer.” Natasha: “I’ve been coming to Coalfields for the past four to five years to come watch, and when we got the offer I said to the guys ‘we’ve got to do it, it’s such a good day’. And because we’re Barnsley based, so our friends and family can come watch.” Do you feel that this is the perfect place for acts with different experience to come perform and get themselves a bit more publicity? Natasha: “Yes absolutely! We get a lot of videos and pictures taken, which we then put towards our show reel. I remember coming last year and we were walking past
a circle, with the tents and catering trucks around the edges. Plus, there were some new additions to make the event more family friendly; including more carnival games and a large slide. The VIP area was located in the upstairs area of the cricket club itself, where VIP’s had the opportunity to get up to ten free drinks with their free drinks tokens, sit in comfort on the couches, use the bathrooms inside rather than the portable alternatives, and enjoy a free buffet including small sandwiches and cakes. this tent, like a heavy metal or an indie tent, and we heard them and thought, ‘they’re really not gonna like us.’ But we went on, and it was absolutely incredible, and we were just ready for it. This year there seemed to be more different style artists on before us, but there’s a lot more pop, you’ve got Holly Tandy who is pop, but I would definitely say for any act that they should do it.” Roseanna: “They welcome new bands too, don’t they? Which is a really nice opportunity to get out in front of everyone.” Compared to the other performers today, what do you think your act brought that got people up on their feet and added a bit of diversity? Like you said before, there’s a lot of rock bands, do you think your act is more upbeat? Natasha: “Yeah, I think as far as I’m aware, we’re the only act that have got full dance routines choreographed. Possibly, we’ve got something more visual to offer, rather than just the music that everybody loves.” Just one last question, did this take much preparation for you? Did you have a lot of rehearsals, getting new costumes; was it a lot of effort for you to come and be here today? Holly: “We’ve been generally getting the show ready over the last few weeks, we’ve added new songs this year, and new costumes. So we’ve been in the studio, changing things up, and adding to it.” Natasha: “Yeah, like Holly said, last year was our first year as a four, so then this year we were like ‘okay, lets amp it up a bit

now’, so the set is very similar to what we did last year with some of the new songs, but some of them have got like a different vibe or a beat to them. But around March, April time we were ready.” A massive big thank you again to Megan, Holly, Natasha and Roseanne for allowing us to chat to you that evening, you were incredible! Storming the stage within the Noise Assault tent; the band Thirteen, popularly known as XIII in roman numerals, took the platform confidently. Having a nice contrast to the pop genre demonstrated on the main stage, it was nice to kick back and enjoy some heavy metal. Dan Murray (Lead vocals and guitars), James Oxtoby (Bass and backing vocals) and Tom Cope (Drums) established their group in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire back in 2007. Since then they now have a large range of experience which astounds audiences; this consists of their impelling movement on stage, lively vocals and professional instrument handling. As part of the audience, we were drawn to their explosive performance, getting even the shyest of metal fans out of their shells. They could be seen snapping over their guitars to the rhythm with the crowd headbanging in unison, making for one of the coolest metal performances we witnessed. This band evidently is on its way to becoming a successor and is following in the footsteps of other prosperous and reigning metal idols such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Led Zeppelin. Following their set, XIII were kind enough to allow us to interview them as we were delighted to find out what brought them to Coalfields. You have just performed at the Coalfields Festival, what attracted you to do this? Have you had any previous experience performing at this festival?
James: “We were here last year, it was good weren’t it? It was a bit quiet, also something broke when we were just about to go on so we had to go get that sorted.” Dan: “It was our first gig back after we’d had a little time off. I’d just recovered from cancer, just finished chemo a month before it. So last year was our first gig back after doing all that lot. It was quite cool, quite chuffed to be back here actually. So it’s got a bit of meaning to it, playing here.” Is your act local to Barnsley, or have you come from far away? James: “We’re from Hull. We knew Hannah, who ran the stage previously, and we spoke to her about it last year. I don’t know if we got in touch with her or not. You saw an advert for it, didn’t you? That was it.” Tom: “It was just on Facebook, like an advert for it, for different bands to sign up.” Did your performance for this event take much preparation? James: “We’ve been together as a band for 11 years. For preparation, we had a gig last night, in Hull, so we did a couple of practices before that,” Dan: “Well today we picked our songs about 10 minutes before we went on stage! It’s a bit of a punk thing; just wing it, see what happens. Something can still go wrong, like it did tonight.” Tom: “I lost my stick at one point!” Dan: “It’s more interesting not being overly prepared, and not knowing exactly what’s going to happen.’ A big thanks again to the members of XIII for allowing us to have this interview, and for more information see their Facebook page XIII. As the festival really got into full swing, even the contented parents, which had set up camp on their fold away chairs and picnic blankets, could be seen getting to their feet. The combination of the wonderful music and the fun atmosphere had everyone dancing around by the main stage, conversing with new people and enjoying drinks. We managed to catch one person, among the crowds, to ask her about her experience.
Which act was your favourite of the day? “Probably the Little Mix one, they were amazing.” Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves at this point. Even the children; as there were more activities and entertainment provided for their age group this year. Even the adults had a go on the slide! Lighting up the Burn Down the Disco Stage, the four piece band Cora Pearl showed their flames and fired up their Indie/Alternative set. They highlighted their achievements through the use of various musical instruments to switch up their style. Band members Jack Hardwick (vocals, guitar and trumpet), Will McMahon (lead guitar), Luke Hawtin (bass) and John Alcock (drums) originally formed with a different lineup on the grounds of the University of Sheffield. Although Sheffield may shine as their central spotlight, the group has excelled in their local area and performance genres. Just going to show that hard work pays off, they earned the opportunity to voice their band at this year’s Sheffield Tramlines Festival. 13th May 2018 saw Cora Pearl opening the show for the band ‘We Are Scientists’ at Sheffield O2 Academy; this was part of the rock band’s Megaplexpedition tour. By having this idealistic dream come true, it has led to Cora Pearl’s recognition soaring with many more opportunities and festivals similar to the Coalfields Festival. At the Coalfields Festival 2018, it was incredible watching them perform. After allowing the noise to assault our ears in the Noize Assault tent, their mellow sound was a nice relaxing alternative. We even felt welcome enough to sit down, to better enjoy their music. While we were speaking to the band, after their performance, we saw the band as an extremely friendly collection of personalities with a passion for music. How long have you been together? Have you recently formed or have you been together years?
Is this your first Coalfields festival? How are you enjoying it so far? “It’s my first time here and I’m really enjoying it, yeah! It’s exceeded all my expectations. A lot better than I imagined it, it’s been a really nice day.”

Coalfields Festival 2018 Jack: “In the current line-up, with all of us now, Luke joined back in January. [We did have] a different line-up, John was playing bass, we’ve had a different drummer, and then we had a switch around.” So, is this your first Coalfields Festival? Jack: “Yeah, I’ve never even been here before, it’s cool, it has a really nice vibe.” Luke: “It seems really cool, like it seems really nice, like everyone has a really nice vibe and that’s what it’s all about.” John: “And having fun.” Are you local to Barnsley? Will: “These guys are from Birmingham, I’m from Essex and Jack is from Preston, but we all did Uni at Sheffield.” Finally, do you feel like you gave this gig much preparation? Will: “Nah, we rocked up. And just, yeah…” Jack: “We got a chance to play at the Tramlines next weekend, so coming and doing this… it was booked ages ago. Toronto Blessings is the Noise Rock band that brought the sound to the Barnsley Live stage. Impressing as a three piece, Rik (vocals/bass), Dale (guitar/vocals) and Murray (drums/ vocals) were incredible to watch. Proudly, Barnsley is the homestead of this band and is where they have developed their success by creating their own music, ‘[Putting] something together fresh that would excite them and challenge them as songwriters,’ (Toronto Blessings – Facebook). Toronto Blessings also managed to bag themselves a gig at the Sheffield Tramlines festival, which again, is another magnificent achievement for themselves as a band and as 18
individuals. What caught our attention the most from the group is how alluring it was to listen, spectate and appreciate a positive outgrowth of rock culture. This band has an interesting style that we had never heard before… a style that’s a bit like a mixture between alternative rock and punk. Very pleasing to hear. Luckily, we had the opportunity to chat with two members of the group upon completion of their set; this was an extremely kind gesture. What is the name of your band? What’s the story behind it? Rik: “Toronto Blessings, erm, I was in the dentist waiting room and was reading an article in a newspaper because I was bored. I was reading about this band, and it said that the singer was a bit all over the place, and they said it looked like he was receiving a ‘Toronto Blessing’ … I was like, what’s a Toronto Blessing? And I found that there’s a Church in Toronto, where people kinda claim to commune with God and they go a bit spazzy, and that’s where the term comes from.” What was your experience was like compared to this year then? Is it better, is it worse? Is the turnout better? Dale: “We’re still like a really new band… everything’s quite new so it’s very different to our old band. Our old band had been going many years, very used to playing with them, this was the first time I’ve sang in a band properly.” Rik: “Very new, all these songs, some of them we’ve never even played live before.” A big thank you again to the members of Toronto Blessings for allowing us to interview them, for more information go to their Facebook page Toronto Blessings and their Instagram @toronto_ blessings. As the festival drew to a close, we saw happy crowds filing out of the cricket club; some confused by the unexpected finale, but mostly contented with their experience. Regarding the changes to the event, many people had questions about the future for the festival, which is why we decided to interview Steve Bell, a staff member and representative whom we had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with prior to the festival. One of the first questions we asked him was regarding their new target market, as we had noticed fewer of the main audience that usually attend – teenagers.
Plus, many people were looking for an explanation as to why the festival was cut slightly short, with no DJ set at the very end. Steve had this to say on the subject: “There were a lot of that age group last year, what we’re doing now is aiming to attract more families, so we are now mainly marketing towards families. People who want to come and drink, chat, dance, and have fun, and not go crazy. We’re changing the way the festival is moving forward. It got to the point last year where they had a DJ on at the end, and it all got a bit crazy. We’d like it to, ideally, be the biggest family festival in Yorkshire.” We also asked Steve about the money raised for charity. Traditionally, over the years, all proceeds from the event are donated to Barnsley Hospice. We wanted to know if they were planning on keeping up with that tradition this year and in the future. “We have taken on less people this year, but we will continue to grow it and grow it, and of course all the profit goes to charity. Our main benefactors are Barnsley Hospice, and the rest is given to some of the other charities that are getting involved, such as Help for Heroes, for example. So our plan for the future is to keep giving money to the Hospice, and giving some of the profits to other local charities as well. The more money we make, the more organisations we can support.” We would like to give a massive thanks to Steve, without whom most of this would not have been possible for us. On a final note, the overall experience and atmosphere of the Coalfields Festival this year was pleasant and enjoyable. P & J Millwards’ Fruit and Veg The first stall that caught our eyes was right at the very front; a fruits and vegetables stall named P & J Millwards’ Fruit and Veg. The owners of this beautiful stall were kind enough to let us have a snoop around and get some close up photos of their quality produce, as displayed here. Whilst we know that it’s easy just to go to your local big supermarket and pick up a bag of packaged fruit, looking at the delicious array of fresh produce on show at this market stall made us regret this choice. Why spend money supporting those huge corporations when you could just nip to your local stall and support the community? I can imagine, you might even save yourself some money.
Joan’s Wool and Knitting Accessories After this, we decided to look around more, and found ourselves captivated by a wall of colour. We found ourselves outside Joan’s Wool and Knitting Accessories; a knitting enthusiasts’ dream. As well as a lush array of coloured wools on display, the stall presented some knitted items for sale hanging up where people could see. These included baby socks, mittens and blankets; one of a kind! This stall was too cute to handle.
Old Barnsley Next, we discovered a hidden gem in the centre of the market; the Old Barnsley stall. As members of the community, we as a magazine are very interested in the history of our hometown, and are always looking at ways to learn more about the origins of our mining town. This stall gave us a blast from the past with the old photos they had on display, as well as several aged books to choose from with information about our past. For any history fanatics out there, it would be easy to spend hours browsing here.
Sailor Sid’s Sweets A stall that brought back childhood memories, we loved getting a good look at Sailor Sid’s Sweets. Everyone remembers their favourite sweet as a child, and most Barnsley locals will definitely remember going around the market with their mothers or grandmas and getting a bag of sweets from the nearest vendor. It was easy to get wrapped up in nostalgia whilst taking in the array of mouth-watering sugary snacks; something we all still enjoy, no matter how much older we get.
Allan’s Majestic Frames Last but certainly not least, we looked at Allan’s Majestic Frames; a stall that specialises in framing any images or posters a customer may want displaying. This stall had a wonderful vintage vibe around it, with framed pictures of Old Hollywood stars like Elvis and Marilyn Munroe on display. As well as the framing services, this stall also had a wonderful array of wall art available, making it eye catching and interesting to look at. We could have spent ages browsing the images if we weren’t there on business! 20

Discover your spirit with Jane Calley-Booth Hello, my name is Jane CaileyBooth and I live in Doncaster with my husband Tony and son Josh. I organise Mind Body and Spirit Shows, Psychic Soirées and other such events and courses as well as offering healing therapies and card readings from my treatment room at home. My background is in education teaching French and Spanish to adults, teenagers and youngsters since the age of 21. My spiritual journey spans some 35 years or more and has developed from a simple awareness to what is now main stream and a way of life for me. During my time as a teacher I developed empathy with people of all ages and all walks of life. In recent years other doors have opened that have put me on my current path and shown me the way to open my natural spiritual doorways and bring out my abilities as a natural networker and organiser using many of the skills that I developed as a teacher.
Thus, i decided late in the summer of 2017 to organise my first event. It was very well attended, the talks and workshops were well received and this experience brought me into contact with other like-minded individuals each with unique, special talents. It was in this way that my business – “The Healing Post” emerged. I have since organised several shows and have more booked in 2018/19 culminating in a show case a 60 stall event - at The Doncaster Dome on the 27th October 2018 - Healthy Living “Discover Your Spirit” Show.

My path recently crossed with that of Tracy Poskitt – It was at my last Healing Post MBS in Doncaster that we met for the first time. Tracy gave me a reading and it was absolutely accurate in every detail. I attended one of her courses at her home in Nottinghamshire where she demonstrated her very own Soul Release Technique on me and oh my goodness – how spirit work through her is beyond belief. We are now working more closely together and I am very excited to be starting another new chapter on my journey with Tracy organising other complementary events with her and collaborating on other ventures. The last 12 months have been fast paced and at times I have had to stop and take a step back myself to fully appreciate all that I have achieved and all that I am becoming. I accept all of these gifts with a gracious heart and realise that none of this would be possible without the guidance of spirit and support of my family, close friends and colleagues. I am very grateful to my beliefs and spirit to be able to do my work and as well as catering for my own needs I can offer funding to many charities that I have empathy for and people that I have met on my journey of life. Restaurant Review
Delicious dishes at Royal Spice Are you stuck eating at the same restaurants every date night? Is your diet lacking in fine cuisine? Are you looking for something new and delicious? Then look no further, my friends – because Georgina and I are taking you on a journey across Barnsley to taste test all the hottest restaurants around. To kick off our first ever restaurant review together, we’re taking you with us to the well known Indian restaurant Royal Spice, to taste items from their newly revamped menu. Anyone who lives in the Darton area will have feasted there at least once; at their Sunday lunch buffets or for a hearty evening meal. It is located directly beside the Train station, just as you turn into the village itself, so you can’t miss it on you way through. Without further ado, over to Georgina for her verdict on her half of the meal – Georgina: If you’re one for exotic, seasoned and vibrant tasting dishes, Darton’s own Royal Spice Indian cuisine and takeaway boasts so many beautifully large dishes on their restaurant menu. I found it very hard to decide on a specific appetiser and main. I normally lean towards non-vegetarian options when it comes to classic and authentic Indian meals, however, on this occasion I opened myself up into trying some original vegetarian Indian dishes. Throughout the whole evening I admired how the staff were extremely prompt when it came to taking orders, and delivering meals – an excellently quick service. In addition to this, they were just all around understanding and highly considerate! We were seated right away at an appealingly prepared table with red serviettes and cutlery. Kindly, we were handed menus and were offered drinks with a variety of choice, as well as fairly large popadums with a dip to comfort us while we ordered and waited for our appetisers and meals – this was a very nice touch because we could snack and prepare 28
ourselves for our main food. There was hardly any wait between our dishes due to the fabulous work of the experienced and punctual staff… My appetiser was a duo of vegetable samosas. I chose these because they are a popular Indian light meal; their presentation was impeccable and the amount of each item on the plate was perfect. Both vegetable samosas were reasonable size for an appetiser, and were extremely crispy and well-seasoned. To add to this, there was a mildly spicy aftertaste but this created the perfect combination with the revitalising and zesty salad. Only £3.50 for this appetiser! My main meal was a Vegetable Biryani – a rice dish with mixed vegetables, a side sauce and a side salad. The quantity of this meal was large but it was the perfect portion; value for money as it was only £6.50! It was a happily mild dish with excellent tastes and textures and the rice coincided expertly with the essence of the spices and flavourings of the vegetables. The sauce with this dish was the ideal medley with the rice and was splendid as a condiment for the extremely large garlic naan bread (that we also ordered). Jaye: I will admit, I was very jealous of Georgina’s meal when the waiter first brought it to the table. However, I was definitely not disappointed after the arrival of my own. When ordering my food, I chose to order meat dishes – to compensate for Georgina branching out to the vegetarian side of the menu. Whilst enjoying the complimentary poppadums, I decided to choose the chicken wings as my appetiser, and within a few minutes of us placing our order the meals had arrived. I have never experienced faster service in a restaurant before – it was incredible how fast they had managed to prepare, dish and serve our food. The appetiser was visually very appealing,
presented nicely beside a small side salad. The chicken was well cooked throughout, and very tender meat of a good quality. It was seasoned perfectly, with a very tasty blend of herbs and spices that were definitely not too hot, for those of you out there with a milder taste. I enjoyed every bite of this stunning appetizer, including the palate cleansing side salad that left me satisfied and ready to begin my main meal. Plus, it only cost me £3.50, more than a fair price for such delicious food! For my main meal, I decided to order something mild, rather than something spicy. Whilst I do have an appreciation for hot food, when it comes to Indian cuisine, I find milder meals much more delicious. I decided to order a chicken korma with boiled rice, plus a garlic naan as a side. When it arrived, it came in it’s own small dish in a lid, which was helpful as I could serve myself the portion size I desired. The chicken again was perfectly cooked, and there was plenty of it to go around with the generous portion size. It had a deliciously creamy taste, with coconut milk being one of the main ingredients, and it only cost £5.50 for the korma, plus £1.40 for the rice and £1.80 for the garlic naan. The rice paired with it perfectly, and the garlic naan was the perfect side dish to go with it. It was so large that Georgina and I couldn’t quite finish it between us – as much as we wanted to. Overall, this meal was perfection – and worth every penny. Georgina and I had a wonderful time in the lovely restaurant, enjoying their wonderful cuisine and friendly customer service. We would both like to give the owner of the restaurant, Zaf Hussain, a massive thank you for welcoming us so graciously and making sure we had everything we needed during our visit. The multi-storey car has now closed to allow preparatory work to begin so that it can be demolished in early 2019. The car park is being demolished to facilitate the next phase of the £130m town centre redevelopment and these changes will remain in place until a new, modern multi-storey car park opens as part of The Glass Works. Short stay
The closest spaces to the shops will be limited to three hours free parking with no option to extend the stay. To park in a short stay car park you must obtain a free ticket from the ticket machine and display it clearly in your car, this is to that make sure users keep to the three-hour limit.
Long stay
Spaces a little further away will be free to use all day. As before, a yellow bag will be placed over the machine to let people know that they can park for free all day. The maximum stay of 24 hours will remain in place.
Courthouse car park
As the Courthouse car park is so big it will include both long and short stay spaces. Don’t worry though, the short stay spaces will be clearly signposted, while short stay car parking spaces in the lower car park will be marked in red. Parking is free at the weekend but during the week we offer a number of ways to pay for parking. If you don’t have cash don’t worry, as a number of our machines offer a chip and pin service and you can also use Ringo to pay by phone or the app. Please check signs and machines for the available options.
