VIDEO GAME REVIEWS

From open-world RPGs to first-person shooters, there are plenty of video games for each type of player. These games seek to provide the most enjoyable experiences possible and test the limits of the player’s creativity. Whether they are played alone or with friends, video games have proven to be a fun way to pass the time and get to know each other better. Video games have been popular for a while, but here at Monarch Park Collegiate they’re only becoming more so with time. Let’s find out once and for all what video games MPC likes (and dislikes) the most!

One of the most popular games at MPC is League of Legends. League is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game that’s free to play on Windows and Mac, published by Riot Games in 2009.

INTERVIEWER: So, why do you enjoy League of Legends? INTERVIEWEE 1: I find it really fun to play with my friends. It’s also free which is always a plus! Really good as a competitive game, but it doesn’t always have to be competitive. INTERVIEWER: Nice! If you could change one thing about League, what would it be and why? INTERVIEWEE 1: I’d add more leisure game modes. The game can be taken too seriously at times thus making it hard to enjoy the game at all. Nobody likes to get angry, right? INTERVIEWER: [to interviewee 2] And why do you enjoy League of Legends? INTERVIEWEE 2: I really like the many skills, items, and combos to learn! Also it’s a little overwhelming lol.

Minecraft is another very well-known game at MPC.

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by the Swedish video game developer Mojang

Studios. Though released in 2011, it is still going strong. Minecraft is appealing for many reasons, but many players like multiplayer the most.

“I can play with my friends because it’s a common game, ” one student said. They only have one gripe with the game: “If only we had gotten the Moobloom when we had the mob vote.

Valorant is a recent game but is quickly gaining traction. It was released in June of 2020 and is a free-to-play first-person hero shooter developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows.

INTERVIEWER: What is your favourite video game? INTERVIEWEE: Valorant. INTERVIEWER: Valorant you say? INTERVIEWEE: Because it’s very competitive. INTERVIEWER: If you were to change one thing about the game, what would it be? INTERVIEWEE: The ranking system. INTERVIEWER: Okay, I’ve heard that. Specifically, what about the ranking system? INTERVIEWEE: I don’t like having terrible players on my team. And then suddenly the other team is twice as good as mine. Even though I outperform everyone, I still lose because I got worse teammates.

Another big game at MPC is Genshin Impact. If you’ve never heard of it, Genshin is an action roleplaying game that was developed and published by the Chinese company miHoYo. When interviewed, a fan of Genshin Impact said that the one thing they would change about the game is the developing team. Another person took issue with the wish system, in which “you have to collect a certain amount of currency and then get a character or weapon.” Their favourite thing about the game is that they can achieve a variety of different characters and styles. They also said that the graphics of the game are very impressive.

Animal Crossing is a social simulation video game series developed and published by Nintendo. The most recent game in the series, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, was released in 2020 and has sold over 30 million copies to date.

INTERVIEWER: What is your favourite video game? INTERVIEWEE: Animal Crossing. INTERVIEWER: Why is this your favourite video game? INTERVIEWEE: Because I can just be me but in an alternate reality. I can go scuba diving and I can make snowmen and I just love it; it’s a great game. INTERVIEWER: If you were to change one thing about the game, what would it be? INTERVIEWEE: More story. It kind of ended; I was kind of sad. Also, unlike many I really like Tom Nook, and there should have been more of him.
