“Eventually all things merge into one, and a river flows through it.” – Norman Maclean “Look ahead, everybody. Do you want to swim in two rivers at once?” Our guide on a summer 2009 Colorado River rafting expedition pointed out the Green River up ahead and to our right, lighter colored, almost greenish water that was flowing in to meet the darker brown-blue waters of the Colorado. His invitation was irresistible, so many of my fellow rafters and I jumped right in and swam over to the watery demarcation where the main tributary of the mighty Colorado River joins in carving the spectacular canyons of the American West. We swam into the Green, then back out into the Colorado. It wasn’t just the color of the waters that was different; the Green was palpably warmer and its current less strong. Swimming into the confluence of these two rivers was a powerful experience. The colors and temperatures merged as the strengthened current propelled us along. Our guide called out, “You can’t stay out there. Come back!” Reluctantly, we hauled ourselves back onto the big raft and continued our adventure.

We hope you will jump right in and immerse yourself in this issue of Comments Magazine.

Herein you will find a variety of articles written by students, faculty, and alumni. Their writing is filled with the convergence of new ideas, reflective thought, and strong emotion – all flowing into the river of experience in a lived confluence of the waters that have carried us through the past two years here at Metairie Park Country Day School.

At Country Day, we work always to strike a balance between the endless acronymic trends of education – STEM having already given way to STEAM now making way for STEAM-A – and the re-packaging of old practices as purportedly new approaches, and ensuring that our curriculum and pedagogy are continually developing and evolving to serve our students far into a future no one can presently envision. Most strikingly in recent years, we have seen our faculty embrace the tools of technology to further learning, expand interdisciplinary study to further thinking, and initiate hands-on projects to advance our students’ problem solving skills into the physical world.

Design work in our traditionally advanced Country Day arts classes – ideation followed by creation followed by often-multiple revisions – is now mirrored in design work in the mathematical sciences – creating models to solve physical problems, testing these prototypes, and further refining them to successfully perform the task. All toward meeting the mission of our school; all within the context of our strong emphasis on honor and respect for all persons; all informed by our traditions within an atmosphere of individual support and joyful learning.

As you read through our magazine, we hope you will feel the power of the current as ideas, people, places, and times flow together to create in our School a unified student experience moving ever forward toward “strength of intellect; strength of character.”

BY SUSAN GISLESON One of the things I love about Country Day is its belief that teachers should be given the opportunity to grow, develop, and hone their educational expertise. Each year our Head of School, Carolyn Chandler, puts out a call asking for teachers who would like to further explore or deepen their knowledge in a particular field of study. For an art teacher this means the opportunity to explore different methods of creating art.

This year, I did just that. I was approached by Michael Manjarris of Sculpture for New Orleans, the non-profit organization responsible for creating and installing the sculptures along the Poydras Corridor. He asked me to contribute a piece to his program. When he told me it could be anywhere in the city, I knew almost immediately what I would do. I would use Country Day’s support and a Lemann Grant I’d recently been awarded to solve a mystery.

As a young girl, I lived on Sherwood Forest Avenue right next to City Park. I grew up looking at an empty pedestal on Swan Island, at the front of the park, and imagined what had been there. According to Historic City Park New Orleans, “As late as 1976, a 500 pound life sized bronze water nymph mysteriously disappeared from her base on Swan Island in the front lagoon, the victim, perhaps, of thieves, or of pranksters who may have lost the dead weight in the black of night. Its fate, like its origin, is still unknown.”

I did extensive research to find an image of the missing statue. City Park did not have one, so I went to the Historic New Orleans Collection, where I looked through countless

boxes of photographs. I thought I found a photograph of the mysterious statue but its label showed it was from Audubon Park. The next day I spoke with Barry Kaiser, the photography teacher at Country Day and asked him if he knew the story of the missing statue. “Of course,” he replied and then added, “My friend Owen Murphy has a photo of her.” Barry then gave me Mr. Murphy’s contact information. Within two hours of emailing Mr. Murphy, I was looking at the image. It was the same as the one mislabeled in the book: a little girl, light on her bare feet, right hand outstretched.

For my sculpture project, I proposed to return the stolen girl to the island – or rather, return the woman she had become – through a life size bronze female figure, approximately six feet tall, and influenced by the Italian statues purchased by Daniel and Martha Turnbull in the 1850’s for their home at Rosedown Plantation in West Feliciana Parish. On the grounds of their plantation are four female statues representing the continents of North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. In order to fund the life-sized sculpture I needed a smaller version, or maquette, of the piece for investors.

I used the Lemann grant to create a bronze maquette using the lost wax technique, a multi-step process that took months to complete. I first sculpted a figure out of plasticine, an oil based clay. From the plasticine sculpture a rubber mold was fabricated to create a wax version.

After the wax version was completed, it was covered with

multiple layers of a thin set ceramic shell mold. Once the wax was covered with the ceramic outer coat it was put into a kiln where the wax was melted out, leaving a hollow impression of the sculpture. This ceramic mold was filled with liquid bronze to create the maquette.

Once the first maquette was cast, Ms. Chandler suggested we bring it to Thomas “Tommy” Lemann to show him the work firsthand since this was the first time a Lemann Grant was used to create original artwork. We decided to meet at his home in Uptown New Orleans, on State Street. Tommy is an alumnus from the Class of 1943, and the grant is in his honor, a gift from his brother Stephen.

Being on State Street brought back memories of my childhood. My family lived in mid-city in the early 1970’s when my father was the head of the Strike Force, a federal program that investigated and prosecuted organized crime. Later, he was hired to work directly for the Justice Department as head of Public Integrity, and we moved to Washington D.C. for a couple of years. By that time, my mother had had eight children in eight years and wanted to be close to her family. So in the early 1980s we returned to New Orleans and moved onto State Street.

It was a different time, no Internet or cell phones; we were connected to the world through direct observation and physically walking through it. I would wander through the neighborhood, to the National Art and Hobby, to the State Street Bookstore on the corner of Magazine Street, or to my favorite thrift store across the street. Of all the beautiful houses on State Street, there was one that always caught my attention. It wasn’t what could be seen but what couldn’t. A tall fence and dense vegetation hugged the home, creating a wall, only punctuated by a beautiful live oak.

All my life I had wanted to go behind that wall and see this beautiful house. As Ms. Chandler and I prepared to show Mr. Lemann my newly created maquette, my childhood curiosities were satisfied. We entered Mr. Lemann’s beautiful home and were taken into the dining room that looked out upon that beautiful oak. Mr. Lemann was very interested in the ambitious capital projects that Country Day had just begun and peppered Ms. Chandler with technical fiscal questions regarding grants, loans, the oil and gas industry, the stock market, and interest rates. He then pledged a generous amount to make sure the projects would become a reality. Ms. Chandler and I were both completely overwhelmed by his unsolicited gift.

Mr. Lemann then turned to me, and I described the Swan Island project and how being awarded the Lemann Grant had made it possible for me to create the rubber mold that will make ten limited edition maquettes. Ms. Chandler spontaneously offered to buy one and Mr. Lemann followed suit. As we were leaving Mr. Lemann asked for my last name. When Ms. Chandler told him he replied, “I remember your father. We worked together on a case. He was a good man.” The year they worked together was 1983, thirty-three years ago.

My father died three years ago. Meeting one of his colleagues who, through a series of seemingly coincidental events, then supported my endeavors continues to give me a deep feeling of interconnectedness and belonging. My father taught me that a life well lived is one filled with curiosity, exploration, and generosity. I am fortunate to have experienced all of these things as I solved a childhood mystery, thanks to Country Day and the extraordinary gift of a grant made by one brother to honor another. h

“I love babies,” said Brenna Weber, president of the class of 2013, and then, as if anyone could have missed her shining eyes, she repeated it: “I just love babies!”

It was two days before graduation, one day before Brenna’s last closing ceremony, and she was presenting her senior Capstone Project to a group of teachers and classmates. Like every senior, Brenna had completed a lengthy research paper for her Global Humanities course on a topic she chose for herself, home births vs. hospital births; she followed up in an internship with Dr. George “Jody” B. Morris, IV, who practices obstetrics and gynecology at Ochsner Baptist. In a letter to Upper School Principal Howard Barton, who was Brenna’s humanities teacher, Dr. Morris reported that Brenna “was able to see the continuum of surgical case flow” from preoperative to the operating room to recovery and follow-up. He noted that her days were long and busy, starting before 7 a.m. and not ending until late afternoon.

“Knowing that Brenna had essentially graduated,” he added, “I was curious to see her interest level during this internship.” Since he already knew Brenna as a leader on his daughter’s swim team, he was not surprised to see that “she was engaged, punctual, and eager during her time with me. My residents felt the same, as they are exposed to many medical students without the same desire and drive that Brenna displayed these past days.”

For Brenna, getting to see the birth of twins was the most exciting part of the whole experience. “I think the fact that a woman and a man can make such a beautiful life is amazing,” she told her audience. “It really made me want to continue looking into becoming an OB/GYN.”

IMMERSED IN THE EX PA NSIV E

The Capstone Project – which includes a 3,000-word research paper and a 45-hour internship – has been part of Global Humanities, a required course for all seniors, since 2011, but the course has been around a lot longer. The brainchild of Academic Dean Howard Hunter, Humanities was established in 1997 to prepare students for college work by studying art, music, religion, and philosophy in a combined lecturesection format. “We wanted a course that connects the disciplines and is also a culminating experience for seniors,” he says. “When we started it, there had been very little talk about the whole notion of a unified body of knowledge. This was a way to pull the whole school experience together, not only for students, but also for faculty.”

Jennifer LaCorte Marsiglia 1997, now Country Day’s Director of Alumni Relations, has “very vivid memories of sitting in the auditorium with our entire class in those front rows.” For Jennifer, the course provided opportunities to learn “about humanity, about each other” with “students we might never have had a class with before. We could all learn from each other.” This year, she has helped some seniors find internships, “and I’ve been impressed with their buy-in and their investment – they seem truly interested in what they’re doing.”

When the senior research paper and internship were established, the course curriculum expanded to accommodate the two additional requirements, but it’s still “a course that’s designed to help them in college,” says Howard Barton, who has taught a section of Humanities since the Capstone Project was established.

Hugh Reily 2014 made that point for seniors next in line when he wrote to Director of Libraries Meb Norton, who has taught a section of Humanities since 2008. Hugh wrote from college to tell her, “I am currently working on a term paper for my Introduction to Philosophy class on ethics and just wanted to say that Country Day’s Humanities class has greatly helped with my writing. The paper I am writing has an open ended prompt with a ten page minimum length. I can honestly say that I would

be completely lost, as many other students here are feeling now at Vanderbilt, had I not been able to take Humanities at Country Day my senior year. Navigating online databases and utilizing various online resources is key to a good research paper. I’d basically just like to relay to the brilliant class of 2015 that they may have a terrible time actually writing their research paper, but if they persevere they will definitely thank you in the future as I am thanking you now.”

Seniors also learn effective public speaking when they present their research to classmates and ultimately, as Brenna did, to a group of teachers and students.

Dane Ciolino, father of Price Ciolino 2012, speaks to seniors every year about how to persuade and connect with an audience. His lecture is “exactly the same” as the one he gives to his third year law students at Loyola College of Law, where he is the Alvin R. Christovich Distinguished Professor of Law. “Everybody, from high school students to young lawyers, can get better at public speaking,” he tells seniors.

And they do get better at it. Each presentation – one each quarter, leading up to the capstone project – is videotaped, and students watch the videos and look for ways to improve. Donnell Bailey 2013, now a senior at Franklin and Marshall College, remembers how “painful” it was to look at those videos and to see, for example, “how many times I said ‘um.’” But when he gave his first presentation in college, he went into it telling himself, “Don’t say ‘um.’” Instead, “I used and leveraged the power of silence. And I’d walk around the room, pace back and forth, and then stand, so people wouldn’t get bored and could follow along. That was something I learned in Humanities – my weaknesses as well as strengths.”

The practical components of the course are important, but equally important are the intellectual components. Along with the introduction of the Capstone Project, the course emphasizes cross-cultural interactions as a key instigator of global

Humanities not only connects the disciplines, but also connects cultures; both approaches support an understanding of the forces that shape the modern world. Cultural contact “provides one of the great forces of change in world history,” according to Peter Stearns, author of the course textbook Cultures in Motion: Mapping Key Contacts and their Imprints in World History. “A society’s culture involves its basic beliefs and values,” Stearns continues, and Humanities exposes students to a variety of such beliefs and values. Course material includes lectures, journals, and class discussions on topics ranging from world religions to the impact of World War I to modern art (see opposite page).

Current events also contribute to course content. “I like to know what’s going on in the world,” says Madeline Gordon 2016. She linked her first quarter paper to Meb Norton’s lecture on Islam’s foundational beliefs, comparing those beliefs to the portrayal of Islam in the reporting of events like the Boston Marathon bombing. Meb Norton explains, “In today’s world, we can no longer be isolationist; we are globally entwined no matter what, and to understand today’s world, you need to have some connection to the past – how did we get to this point?” In his final lecture, Howard Barton told the seniors, “You now know more about the Middle East than 90 percent of Americans.”

How do students make sense of such diverse material? From the very beginning, the course has synthesized divergent topics and perspectives by asking four big questions: What kind of world do we live in? What does it mean to be human? Why do we suffer? How should we live? A Greek philosopher would answer one way, a Buddhist monk another, a twenty-first century psychologist yet another.

leader Liam Campbell explored Confucianism’s belief that humans are teachable, even perfectible. In a lecture on the impact of World War I, Howard Barton showed how a world in which “nobody had ever seen such death and destruction” caused survivors to lose faith in their own ability to affect the future. And in a lecture on existentialism, French Department Chair Mary Beth Ellis told students, “We’re free to create ourselves in the world.” Human choices “make all the difference,” she told them. “You make a huge difference!”

The questions “stick with you in a way that helps you reflect,” says Donnell Bailey.

After answering a question on his college Introduction to Sociology exam about what it means to be human, he wrote to the Humanities faculty to explain how relevant the course was to college work; he went on to major in sociology, and continues to ponder the questions. “I keep processing the Humanities course,” he says. “You understand it thinking backwards.”

Other students have also written to faculty about the impact of the course content.

At the end of her first semester at Louisiana State University, Chloe Krake 2015 wrote to her section leader, Meb Norton, “One thing that really stood out to me is my superior understanding of cultural anthropology, art history, and current events.

of the capstones were really astonishing,” says Liam Campbell. “Emma Bossier 2016 wrote about veganism and how it represents a kind of threshold opportunity, not just because it’s healthier, but also because it’s healthier on an environmental and sociological level. It was really thoroughly researched. She already knew quite a bit about it, but she went above and beyond that.” She linked her research to an internship at Cypress Fitness, a gym that also provides nutritional counseling.

“Lindsey Landry 2016 had such a great idea,” says her section leader Howard Barton. “She looked at the way youth sports have become so competitive and so stressful and have lost sight of the true meaning of sports, and then she looked at the Special Olympics as a model for the right way to do things.” Part of her argument dealt with the prevalence of injuries in youth sports; she served her internship with physical therapists who treat injured athletes.

Carter Guidry 2016 wrote his paper about the exploitation of musicians by record labels and the “paradigm shift” that occurs “as artists enter the music industry with recording/producing, performing, and business backgrounds.” The result, he argued in his paper, is “a new, modern-day creative renaissance in which the artist has full authority over his/her own career.” He served his internship in the Film and Music Industry Studies department at Loyola University, New Orleans, where he is a freshman. “From assembling various microphone stands to operating a mixing and mastering console, my internship benefitted me greatly in terms of expanding my technological and managerial skills as an artist,” he reported.

In lectures, journals, class discussions, papers, and finally the internship. Global Humanities provides opportunities for students to see the world from a variety of perspectives. When academic and experiential learning intersect, the result can be life-changing, as it was for Shay Kelly 2014. Shay wrote her paper about posttraumatic-stress syndrome in post-Katrina New Orleans and then worked in a

Within these subjects, I have noticed that I have a far wider knowledge than many of my class peers, and for that I credit Country Day’s Humanities course.”

Lectures demonstrate the diversity of both topics and presenters. Alumna Tricia Alexander 2003, a PhD candidate in Art History and Latin American Studies at Tulane, talks to seniors about the indigenous cultures of Central and South America. Fifth grade teacher Michael Skinkus, who earned a master’s degree in ethnomusicology at Tulane, describes the survival of African rhythms in Caribbean music. English teacher Mike Miley lectures about paradigm shifts and Thomas Kuhn’s groundbreaking book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. That lecture was in January; in April, students were still referring back to it in journals and class discussions.

From lecturers who are passionate about their interests, students learn to think creatively about paper topics, culminating in the Capstone Project – first the research paper, then an internship that allows them to apply their research. “Some

mental health hospital for her internship. “When I first started working there, I was very afraid,” she wrote in a reflection. “I imagined a place where nurses wore all white and pushed restrained patients around on stretchers.” Instead, she found “a genuine, caring place with a very friendly and understanding staff. My emotions went from being afraid to feeling like I was going to my second home.” She realized that mental patients “need the same type of love and care that ‘normal’ people get.” At the hospital, “I saw sweet people with lots of potential.” She concluded, “Mental health is definitely a place where my heart is, and I would like to help people suffering from mental illnesses in the future.”

Humanities is about ideas: how ideas emerge from culture, and about how we, as students of culture, process and apply those ideas. Just as encounters between societies change those societies, so too encounters between individuals change those individuals. Humanities provides opportunities for seniors to think more deeply, express themselves more clearly, listen more attentively to others, and learn to participate in the collegial conversation awaiting them. But there’s more. As Howard Barton said in his final lecture last spring, “Way back in August, I asked you why this course is important to you. The answer is, because you’re going to college – and after that, you need to save the world, because college is not an end in itself.”

In an end of the year reflection on the course, Coco Birkhoff 2013 put it this way: “The Humanities class really makes us realize what kind of world we live in, and it makes students think about what we could change to make it better. After all, we are the next generation that can do something about it.” h

happened. Susan Sontag, quoted in Rosenberg’s article, agrees with this view, saying, “Needing to have reality confirmed and experience enhanced by photographs is an aesthetic consumerism to which everyone is now addicted.”

The truth of this is proved through social media use in teenagers especially. Nobody is safe from the constant blue-lighted faces of teens, but not everybody understands the inherent addiction of proving you have a life. Teenagers are known for having stages of lower self-esteem and needing confirmation for confidence. Social media provides those confirmations with simple numbers. How many people like this and how many followers you have.

It is the most straightforward way to see your status.

In The Huffington Post’s article “Inside the Mind of a Teen’s Instagram Post,” by Lauren Galley, Galley understands that teens use social media “to boost their self-esteem and gain popularity.” This confirmation becomes addictive, quickly. Galley discusses how teens use social media to define their self-worth. This is unhealthy behavior, as I, as a teen, know firsthand.

I deleted my social media because of the obsessions that overtook me. We are faced with a generation of people who will not all decide to delete these enablers.

COUNTRY DAY

“If you don’t post it, did it really happen?” These words were spoken to me, however satirical in intent, while I was sitting with 50 other teenagers at a cast party after a production of “Grease.” Every single teenager present was on the phone, myself included. What else could I do?

There was nobody to talk to. I was alone in a sea of phone screens. Although I chose to delete my social media many months ago, I still have not escaped its influence.

My generation has a Gilgamesh Complex, and it is enabled. Gilgamesh, for those unfamiliar, went on a quest for immortality, and when he discovered the impossibility of this act, vowed to make his name live on forever, the closest thing to immortality we humans have.

Gilgamesh succeeded, as every high schooler who has read his epic knows. The problem is that fame, however short-lived, is in the grasp of every young human who has access to the Internet, American Dream Style. Everybody must have his or her name known, everybody must know who is doing what, to feed our Gilgamesh Complex.

As Karen Rosenberg said in The New York Times essay “Everyone’s Lives, in Pictures,” “The act of snapping a picture is no longer enough to confirm reality and enhance experience; only sharing can give us that validation.” In an age in which technology reigns, people feel the need to post every meal, every party and every coffee date, to prove that it

ON WRITING AND LIFE

Every now and then, people ask me why I spend what little free time I have writing essays. One might assume that I spend hours working on an article because that’s my idea of fun, only that isn’t true. Because writing is not fun.

This is not going to be one of those essays about the “joys” of writing.

Trust me, I am more suspicious of those essays than you are. There is little joy in writing, at least, not in good writing. Writing is hard.

Frustrating. Slow. Fun seldom enters into it. Writing is not easy for anyone.

If anything, the better a writer is, the harder writing becomes.

Writing is not only a great gift we can give to others, it’s also the greatest gift we can give to ourselves. In considering another person and how best to speak to him or her, we tap into our shared humanity. Even though writing may seem like a lonely activity, it actually lessens our loneliness and the loneliness of our readers.

Here’s an example of how this “fun” process plays out for a writer of modest talent. The Atlantic’s website published a piece of mine last May that ran 2,500 words. I had sent a 4,200-word first draft the previous December. While that might lead one to conclude that 1,700 words got cut out, the truth is that only 191 of my words survived the five drafts that came in between. Future generations will refer to it as The Great Atlantic Massacre of 2016. Were those other 4,009 words really that bad? I certainly didn’t think so. Did all the changes bring the piece closer to its original idea? Most of them. Would I like to revise it again? Absolutely. This time I’d probably let 250 words squeak by with a warning.

This process may sound like dark and lonely work, but all that work is actually about us, the readers, and our relationship with that person toiling away in obscurity. We may write for ourselves when we first sit down. I’d even argue that we have to, but ultimately writing is always for someone else, a reader, and when we revise we are negotiating the divide between our point of view and someone else’s so that we can make that gap between us a little narrower.

Some claim that writing is a waste of time (their heads are nodding now), and those people are not entirely wrong (they are now either exchanging fierce high-fives or clinking glasses). From a certain point of view, writing is incredibly wasteful because good writers throw away most of their work. To make matters worse, little of the good stuff survives either. Editors use red pens for a reason: revision is lexical slaughter, and no word is safe. Ever. (See?)

By all accounts, my experience was par for the course, part of the job, which might lead one to ask why I would want to do a job that requires me to destroy most of my work. My answer might sound bonkers, but here goes: the most valuable, rewarding thing about writing is that writing at its heart forces a person to come face to face with failure on a continual basis. It forces a person to confront his or her own limitations, to stare humility in the eye and discover yet another way in which he or she does not, cannot, cut the mustard. Then he or she comes back again in the hopes that this time, he or she will fail just a little bit better.

Science Explained in Metaphor

BY HOWARD HUNTER There was a time when intellectuals were household names. In the early days of the Cold War, a Leonard Bernstein or a Clare Booth Luce represented the sophistication and urbanity of the West, the antithesis of Soviet barbarism. Ideas mattered and were not confined to the Ivory Tower; hence when British novelist and scientist C.P. Snow gave his lecture on “Two Cultures” in 1959, it caused quite a stir. Snow argued that the West had fallen into two distinct cultures, scientific and literary, that operated in parallel universes with no interaction. Humanists had become woefully ignorant of science, and scientists were illiterate outside of their narrow fields of research. Yet as unenlightened as scientists were, at least they had “the future in their bones,” a sense of optimism and can-do, as opposed to the literati, who by nature were antediluvian and luddites.

In many ways, Snow adumbrated current prejudices. Educational theories de jour promote technological faddism and variations of the overhyped STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). The humanities have ceased to be part of the discourse; it has even been argued that they have run their course and are no longer relevant. Snow’s notion of a fractured knowledge is recent in human evolution, only going back to the eighteen hundreds with the rise of specialization and technical degrees. While all would agree on the benefits of advancements in transportation, communication, engineering, and medicine, the connections between disciplines have been lost. The question now is are these connections worth restoring?

From the ancients through the eighteenth century all knowledge was considered one, a unified body of connected ideas. Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, for example, symbolized the unity of the arts and sciences as reflective of nature. But with the industrial revolution, knowledge became utilitarian and stratified. As

the concept of a unified knowledge disappeared, the humanities took refuge in the universities with their own arcane tribal customs. While the horrors of two world wars, a Holocaust in Europe, and racial oppression and violence at home gave the humanities new exigency and poignancy, the problem of two cultures has largely not been resolved in higher academe.

Only through popular culture have the disciplines been reconciled. Jacob Bronowski’s television series Ascent of Man and Lord Kenneth Clark’s magisterial Civilisation, both of which aired in the 1960s, and most recently, David Christian’s Big History, are examples of what John Henry Newman called “a connected view” of knowledge. They refuse to give science, the humanities, and the arts their own spaces, focusing instead on how the various branches of knowledge fit together. The focus on big ideas — e.g. cosmology, biological and cultural evolution, historical continuity and contingency — is gaining traction, because of our need to make sense of a world that is becoming increasingly more complex and nuanced. The profusion of documentaries with multiple lenses is filling a void created by the specialization of the university. When we transcend specialization and the restrictions of academic “subjects,” it becomes evident the humanities and sciences are fueled by the same impulse, the need to explore the nature of reality.

The creative driver in both the humanities and the sciences is the imagination.

Niels Bohr, the father of the atomic structure, explained to Werner Heisenberg, “When it comes to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry. The poet, too, is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images.” Nineteenth century British historian and M.P. Thomas Macaulay argued that history needed to be understood by “the imagination as well as the reason;” the images we create are as important as analysis. Scientist Leo Szilard visualized a nuclear chain reaction when he stopped for a red light on a stroll through London in 1934. As a humanist, Szilard tried to keep the idea a secret because he could imagine the horror of nuclear Armageddon, but by 1939, it became clear that developing the bomb ahead of the Nazis was the lesser evil.

At their best, both the humanities and the sciences foster humility and discrimination. The biblical “substance of things hoped for” is true for all the disciplines, that through honest inquiry somehow we can come closer to the truth, even as we meet our limitations. Jacob Bronowski wrote of science, “We are always at the brink of the known, we always feel forward for what is to be hoped. Every judgment in science stands on the edge of error, and is personal.” Believing that we need a science based on humanistic ideals, Bronowski belied the notion that science is independent of historical context and ethical thought.

The liberal arts and sciences can both transform lives and effect a sense of aesthetic transcendence. When a student finds beauty in a mathematical equation, a poem, a cell, or a narrative, that student is never the same again. We tend to shy away from such sentiments, because the illusionary goal is mastery of subject. In his response to Snow’s “Two Cultures,” science writer Loren Eiseley wrote, “Have we grown reluctant in the age of power to admit mystery and beauty into our thoughts, or to learn where power ceases?” Our expanding ignorance means the more we know, the more we realize what we don’t know. The haughty Enlightenment, the adolescence of humankind’s development, assumed that all that was worthwhile was knowable, yet the mystery of the universe, and of our own humanity, inspire wonder, an ineffable sense that by engaging the liberal arts and sciences, we enter into a communion with something we will never master, but which makes us whole. As Shakespeare’s King Lear tells Cordelia on the way to prison, together they will “take upon’s the mystery of things/As if we were God’s spies.” As we try to understand the ninety-five percent of the universe that we don’t know, with its black holes and dark matter, we will need both science and poetry to make sense of existence itself.

At an international competition at Michigan State, Country Day's lower school Future Problem Solvers team wrestled with the scientific and social implications of the future challenge of limited energy. After coming up with a solution, they presented their findings in a skit using the Greek Gods Zeus, Hephaestus, and Aphrodite. PRESERVATION & INNOVATION

A BALANCE BETWEEN PRESERVATION AND INNOVATION IS VITAL TO THE LIBRARY AND ITS PROGRAM

It was a small, torn scrap of paper protruding from a book of stories by De Maupassant. Written in a childish hand using orange marker it said: “Greetings from 4/4/83.” How delightful to have a voice from the past surprise you! Just as memorable was the time last spring when two middle school girls excitedly ran down the stairs to show the librarians a first edition of a classic book written in 1895. Since the library adds 800 new books each year and withdraws just as many, these are rarities, but reminders that striking a balance between preservation and innovation is vital to the library and its program.

The fundamental mission of a library, to store and disseminate knowledge, has not changed in thousands of years. In addition, school libraries foster a love of reading and ensure that students, teachers, and staff are effective users of ideas and information. By learning to evaluate information, one comes to realize that knowledge is not created by consensus but rather is based on facts.

Weekly library classes in Lower School started in 1975.

Students are still read to and then have time to check out books. I had a parent stop me one day and say: “Your voice is in my head. I use it to read my children stories.” Another time, a high school student saw me on the walkway and said: “Bunnicula was the best book I ever read.” Seven years had passed and he still remembered the story as it was read to him.

Unlimited checkout started in 1982 when new research showed that literacy rates improve when students are surrounded by reading materials. It was facilitated by the computerized circulation system. Obviously, it is still a popular idea, since our younger students check out an average of 140 books a year.

Supporting literacy in any format is important to us. When Amazon introduced Kindles, we bought them so that an entire class could read the same book, if necessary. Several years ago, when the Middle School initiated the iPad program, we started an eBook collection and taught the students how to download books to their devices.

Stump the Librarians, started in 1984, is an annual game designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity. Twenty-eight students stumped the librarians that year. For years the librarians researched at the New Orleans Public Library, Tulane University Library, and the UNO Library. We called museums across the country to find out how many teeth a T Rex dinosaur had, when cars first used headlights, and similar questions.

Now, with the Internet, it is more difficult to stump the librarians. We have kept this custom, periodically evaluating the value of continuing since it is so hard to stump us. We believe in supporting the programs that are worth preserving, so we added Spirit of the Game Awards for unique questions with interesting answers. Over 150 students played this year, and graduating senior Annie Cohen received the Master Intellectual Inquirer Award. She had played for eleven of her thirteen years at Country Day and won four Spirit of the Game Awards. Sixteen students happily received Spirit of the Game Awards at division assemblies. Based on participation, we determined this is a tradition worth preserving.

While technology has changed the world, it has also radically affected the library program. Research used to involve combing through the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature and then finding the articles on microfiche. Those days are happily gone.

Authoritative information can be found in any of the forty-three databases we subscribe to, but to make it easier for students to target the best ones for a research project, we create a LibGuide for every class. This online program allows us to curate the best resources for a specific project. We can instantly add databases because now resources such as Opposing Viewpoints take more from our library budget, we are continually grateful for the magnificent support we receive each year from the Country Day Parents’ Association Book Week. We could not continue to innovate each and every year without their generosity. For example, to support the senior capstone paper, a ten-page argument paper, we picked up Opposing Viewpoints this year, a database that explores multiple sides of current events and controversial issues.

We don’t spend as much time teaching students how to manually create bibliographic entries anymore. Instead, we show students how to use EasyBib, a program which they will still be using in college to take electronic notes, create outlines and footnotes, and cite works in multiple styles. The glory of a program like EasyBib is that it allows one to be precise without getting bogged down by meticulous formatting rules.

Electronic resources not only help students, but also allow librarians to stay current with the field through listservs, blogs, and Twitter feeds.

We use the cycle of the school year for reflection, evaluation, and innovation. Summer is the incubator for new ideas that continue the conservation of what is valuable and the introduction of the new. Preservation and innovation—it has always been that way. h

BY SHAY STECKER 2002 “I can never decide whether Paris is more beautiful by day or by night,” says Adriana to Gil in Woody Allen’s film Midnight in Paris. Gil replies, “No you can’t. You couldn’t pick one. I mean I can give you a checkmate argument for each side.” While I agree with Gil in his lack of answer to this conundrum, when I put my own twist on the question and ask, “Is Paris more beautiful in English or in French?” the answer is easy: in French.

I had lunch with Nina Haug 2012 on Easter weekend last year. Well, I say lunch. It was a mont blanc, a delicate cake of chestnuts topped with whipped cream, and a cup of chocolat à l’ancienne, or hot chocolate. I believe that counts as lunch in Paris. I was there with students on our French exchange trip.

She was studying abroad in Orléans and was in Paris for the weekend. Like me, Nina studied French at Country Day and went on to study French in college. Over our meal at the salon de thé, she asked me what I had planned for the rest of the day.

I told her that I had recently read Emile Zola’s novel Nana. I pulled out my journal to read her passages I had jotted down describing the Comte de Muffat, the Earl of Muffat, waiting for Nana at the stage door of the Théâtre des Variétés located in the Passage des Panoramas. Nina’s eyes grew wide, as mine had when I first read about this seemingly magical place. “That sounds amazing!” she said.

“Right! Do you want to go with me to see it?”

“Um, yeah!”

We strolled through the Palais Royal with its black and white columns and perfectly cut trees, out Rue Vivienne, turned on Rue Saint-Marc, and reached our destination, the Passage des Panoramas. Zola’s description is 150 years old, but the Passage des Panoramas matched it exactly, as we knew it would. Sure, the stores had changed hands, and there was no lingering smell of “Russian leather,” but there were the stage door and window displays and the covered narrow walkway.

It was mystical, as if we had walked into a painting or walked back into 1870. We took our time looking at the treasure trove of shops and restaurants, stopping at each window.

As we walked out to Boulevard Montmartre and saw the lights of the Théâtre des Variétés, whose marquee now sports pink neon lights in lieu of gas bulbs, I pitied the few strolling tourists who I feared hadn’t read Nana. I wanted to set up a stand. “Read this!” I would say, “You’ll appreciate the entire

Passage des Panoramas so much more if you do!” Of course, for them to really understand it, I’d have to also offer a lengthy pamphlet covering the importance of the naturalism movement as depicted in Nana, a photo of Manet’s impressionist painting of the same name, a brief explanation of the juxtaposition of Nana’s destructive fall with the dawn of the Franco-Prussian War, and of course, the importance of Baron Haussman’s Grands Boulevards which forever changed the face of the city. They would most likely think me an eccentric and discard the pamphlet.

Oh, those poor souls who hadn’t studied the most beautiful language in the world! They were missing out on this city and all that it has to offer.

Luckily, I had thirteen French students with me on this particular trip, and on the day we went to the Opéra Garnier, they were excited to see the very place they had read about in Le Fantôme de l’Opéra in my class a few years prior. They recalled the way in which author Gaston Leroux described the circular room of mirrors as we sat in that very spot waiting for our guide. I asked Chandler Nguyen, Class of 2017, about the benefit of studying French before visiting France.

“Visiting the Palais Garnier after reading Le Fantôme de l’Opéra allowed me to really connect with the story and imagine exactly where scenarios took place. It was awesome to go there having known the history behind it.”

It was like the Passage des Panoramas all over again. The study of the French language is not simply a study of verb conjugations or the use of double object pronouns; language is a dive into philosophy, art, history, and culture. And even then, it’s a study not limited to French culture, but one that opens your world to the rich cultures of the forty-three countries where French is spoken.

Studying French enabled me to enjoy a long conversation in

French with a Senegalese cab driver in New York City about our shared cultural background, his experience with the food, architecture, and music of Senegal, and mine with almost the same food, architecture, and music of New Orleans. Studying French led me to breakfast in the glass-enclosed brassy terrace of Le Dôme thinking that I could be sitting at the same table where once sat Hemingway or Picasso. Glimpses of the past are everywhere to be seen; you just need to know to look. As I walk down winding cobblestone streets in Paris, I have a connection to the Enlightenment philosophers and revolutionary figures whom I studied with Madame and Monsieur in high school and college, and I also have a connection to the teachers at Country Day’s exchange school; I can share a laugh with a shop owner or speak to the waiter at a café in the morning to find out what’s happening in town that day.

This is why it’s so wonderful to study French, and this is what I hope my students take away from their French courses. Learning French gives them the ability not simply to know about something, but to be familiar with, and have a genuine understanding of, what and who is around them. I want them to be like Nina Haug 2012, whose genuine excitement matched my own. I want them to be able to connect to places and to people, not through electronic means, but face-to-face; through a common language, through an appreciation of art and literature, and by their own, shared experience of living in the world. “You look around and every street, every boulevard is its own special art form,” Gil says to Adriana, describing Paris. It is indeed an art form, the capital city of this rich history and culture, and it surely is more beautiful in French. h

It all started four years ago at a Country Day parent party. I was chatting away with sophomore parents in the breakfast room of Cathy and Doug Gitter’s home, when, out of the blue, Dan Shea said he thought we should offer Advanced Placement Computer Science at Country Day. When I agreed, Dan said, “If you can find a teacher, I’ll support the program.” In less than a nanosecond, I knew who I would ask, so I told Dan he was on.

The following day, Chris Lawrence brought the cell phone outside to his wife Linda, who was relaxing in their backyard pool. Linda had been a Country Day parent volunteer for many years, most recently serving our school as the President of the Parents’ Association. “It’s Carolyn,” he said. Amazingly, she took the call.

Wonderfully, she agreed to come out of retirement as a software developer, systems engineer, and entrepreneur in

the private sector to attend a summer AP Computer Science workshop and then to teach for us.

In her first year, 2013-2014, Linda had five students – all boys. They achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the advanced placement examination.

That spring, one of our students placed first overall in computer science in the

district literary rally. When I told Dan Shea the good news, he said he would support the program for another year if we could just manage to enroll a girl in the course. I told Dan he was on.

The following year, 2014-2015, we had enrolled sixteen students in AP Computer Science, ten boys and yes, six girls. Once again, the results were outstanding, a 94 percent pass rate.

Once again, a Country Day student placed first overall in computer science in the district literary rally and then placed first in the region in the state literary rally. Two years in a row – not bad! It turned out that two of our sister schools offered AP Computer Science online, but that Country Day was the only independent school offering the full classroom experience. Once again we enjoyed funding for the program from Dan and Stephanie.

We went back to a 100 percent AP Computer Science pass rate in 20152016; in fact, all students scored the top score, a 5. Once again, the program was supported by Dan and Stephanie.

Once again, a Country Day student placed first overall in district; later this same student was named first in computer science in the entire state.

Once again, Dan inspired us with his vision. “Country Day,” he told us, “is poised to become the leader in computer science education among our peer schools.” We talked further about the tremendous need in our country for more engineers and for more young thinkers who can apply the design skills we have taught for years in Country Day arts and English classes to creating solutions to both the physical and virtual problems of the twenty-first century.

So, in addition to our AP Computer Science class, we offered a pilot course called Computer Science Principles in 2015-2016. In this class, four students explored robotics and

microprocessors known as Arduinos, using coding to create functioning prototypes and even delving into app development. We took everything we learned from teaching this pilot course to inform a year-long interdisciplinary conversation between three teachers.

This work culminated in the creation of our own course for 2016-2017. Creative Design Through Art, Math, and Computer Science is being team taught by upper school computer science, art, and math teachers. The possibilities for deep, robust, connected learning in this course are endless.

Brand new on the Country Day drawing board is a plan to create coding classes for interested 7th and 8th graders.

And so the river of Country Day creativity in the humanities, already strengthened by the strong current in recent years of advanced problem solving in science and math and by burgeoning interest in engineering projects starting in the Lower School, has been joined by a new stream, the dancing waters of computer science. We believe our students’ opportunities will be wonderfully enhanced as new and dynamic forms of computational thinking become an increasingly strong part of their learning adventure.

Our new Science and Engineering Building will house a specially designed computer science classroom.

A clear, black night, lit only by an endless expanse of stars, might just be the perfect setting for an astronomer’s work. So too for a photographer trying to capture “star trails,” arcs of light produced when photographing stars as the earth rotates over a span of time. Amazing images result from such photographs, images so endless and malleable they seem to move, connect, and converge to a center, an end nowhere in sight. Star trails could serve as a rich, robust metaphor for the convergence of curriculum, campus, and sense of community taking place at Country Day. Each piece, each star, its own rich and expansive whole, but when viewed together over time, something far more out of this world.

In a recent interview with Country Day Trustee Susan Taylor, the Montine McDaniel Freeman Director at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the topic of convergence led to a discussion on education and then, seemingly far afield, to this star phenomenon, inspiring the artwork on the front cover.

WHAT: Renovation of the existing dining room and expansion of the original footprint by 2,700 square feet, creating a second bay window and additional space for seated lunches and presentations. Adjacent will be a terrace and landscaped courtyard which will provide a beautiful gathering space and a venue for hosting outdoor special events.

WHAT: New 10,000 square foot building with a high-tech engineering laboratory, a custom-designed computer science classroom, and reimagined physics, chemistry, and biology classrooms. The engineering lab will allow students the use of a microcontroller, a fabrication center equipped with a CNC router and laser engraver, 3D and large-scale 2D printing, programmable robotics equipment, and a math-modeling design workstation.

Cum Laude Society The Cum Laude Society, the high school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, is a national organization founded in 1906. Its primary goal is to recognize and honor superior scholastic achievement. Country Day is limited in the number of junior and senior students elected each year; faculty nominate students based on their superior GPA, good character, honor, and integrity. Faculty members who have received outstanding scholarly recognition are also eligible.

Joanna Haug 2015 accepted admission into the prestigious McDermott Scholars Program at the University of Texas at Dallas in August 2015. The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program is funded by a $32 million endowment to The University of Texas at Dallas providing its scholars with experiences centered on excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. The award covers all educational and enrichment expenses, including opportunities for professional development and studying abroad, a requirement of the Program. Joanna is one of only 25 students to have been selected from a pool of 560 candidates who applied for the Scholars Program. Alumnae Lelia Gowland 2004 and Nina Haug 2012, Joanna’s sister, are also McDermott Scholars.

National Honor Society Metairie Park Country Day School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society invites students to apply for membership during their second semester if they maintain a B+ cumulative unweighted average, enroll in a minimum of two academic honors/AP classes, and fulfill or exceed the required number of community service hours. McColl Simons 2016 Named Scholar-Athlete Senior McColl Simons was selected as a 2016 ScholarAthlete by the Allstate Sugar Bowl Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. McColl was one of thirty-seven New Orleans Area student-athletes to be recognized for his success in the classroom and on the football field. Of those thirty-seven student athletes, McColl was one of six to receive a $10,000 scholarship. As the New Orleans Scholars program continues in its third year, Program Director and Country Day History Teacher Vanesa Gentinetta believes the program’s mission, to educate a new generation of citizens who can effect a paradigm shift for the future of our city, is on course.

Directed toward incoming juniors and seniors at Metairie Park Country Day School and Benjamin Franklin High School, the program supports a two-year exploration of New Orleans through the study of economic development, environment, politics, and culture. New Orleans Scholars take four non-credit half-courses over four semesters. Students complete the program with a better understanding of the problems that have historically faced and currently face our city. Having been immersed in active community problem-solving, they will be equipped to reengage with these very issues as adults, wherever they may live.

According to Benjamin Franklin student Seth Lovelace, 2016 scholar, the program “provided my fellow scholars and me with perspectives beyond the traditional classroom; the program accomplished three goals that I consider pivotal to education: exposure, specifically regarding Louisiana: exposure to culture and history at the Historic New Orleans Collection; exposure to the political forces that shape the districts of New Orleans; exposure to STEM fields and their influence; exposure to the economic engine that is the Mississippi River; exposure to Louisiana’s eroding wetlands; exposure to jobs and research and ideas and people. The Scholars program exposed us Scholars to the wide array of events and aspects that constitute our everyday lives, and beyond this, it accomplished the second goal of education: application. As we were exposed to new frontiers, ideas, and perspectives, we applied what we had gained from our insight and did so through real projects: presentations to the New Orleans City Council on neighborhood infrastructural improvement, exhibitions on the historical development of our city, personally witnessing the deterioration of Louisiana’s marshes. Application cements the foundation upon which knowledge has been wrought, and application of this kind goes further, accomplishing the final goal of education: future extension. My peers and I will take what we have learned and extend it beyond this program. From my perspective, that’s the ultimate boon that can be gleaned from education-exposure, application, and extension.”

The New Orleans Scholars program has been funded through generous grants from the Edward E. Ford Foundation, the RosaMary Foundation, and the Harry T. Howard III Foundation.

Elizabeth Kehoe 2016 Named a MoreheadCain Scholarship Semifinalist Elizabeth Kehoe 2016 was named a semifinalist for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the oldest and most prestigious scholarship program in the United States. Elizabeth is among only twenty percent of Morehead-Cain applicants who are selected to advance to this distinguished level. Elizabeth is the third Country Day semifinalist for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. Cheney Gardner 2010 and Adele Layrisson 2014 were the school’s most recent Morehead-Cain semifinalists.

Cheney Gardner was then among the six percent awarded the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

2016 National Merit Commended Students Larkin Holtzman and Charlie Livaudais were recognized as 2016 National Merit Scholarship© Commended Students.

As such, they placed among the top 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition when taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Larkin attends Washington & Lee University and Charlie attends Duke University.

Alvin Magee 2016 Selected Questbridge Scholarship Recipient Alvin Magee 2016 will attend Rice University in Houston, Texas as a recipient of the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship©. Alvin, a 13-year veteran of Country Day, is known for his smile, intellect, and myriad talents. As an accomplished musician, actor, and student, Alvin not only took a full and challenging course load, including five Advanced Placement and Honors courses; he also participated in school plays and mastered the guitar and piano. Alvin, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor, a National Honor Society member, and a Cum Laude Society member, was also named a semifinalist for the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Now in its twelfth year, QuestBridge partners with over thirty-five top-tier universities around the nation such as MIT, Stanford, and Rice, to provide high-achieving students with full four-year scholarships. This year, over 13,000 students applied for these distinguished scholarships, and 4,895 were chosen as QuestBridge finalists. Of the finalists, 657 were admitted to a partner university and, like Alvin, will receive a guaranteed full four-year scholarship including tuition, room and board, fees, and traveling expenses. Alvin plans to major in computer science.

Head Football Coach Joe Chango, "Our move to 2A has been an exciting challenge. It has been inspiring to see how our players have responded to a task that was supposed to be too much."

When news broke that Country Day was moving up to 2A football, people got worried.

“They won’t be able to compete in 2A.” “Our boys are gonna get hurt.”

These phrases were repeated around campus right up until the season began.

Parents and teachers alike doubted we could put together a winning season.

Imagine their shock when we won a playoff game in our first year in 2A, 2015.

Everything about the playoffs is different from any game during the season.

Everything is on the line: the family and connections you create throughout the season, your personal season, and most important, your senior brothers who might be strapping up and walking on to the field for the last time. If you screw up or forget something important, you’re costing someone, someone you’ve shared blood, sweat, and tears with, another opportunity to play football. Playoff games are like standing on top of a skyscraper; you have to do everything in your power to stay on top.

We were scheduled to play Ouachita Christian at seven o’clock on a chilly Friday night in weather that extracted long-sleeved undershirts from the bottom drawers of teenage boys. Kickoff felt like midnight, and many thought the clock had struck for the Cajuns and their Cinderella season.

After a long day of team bonding, eating, and sleeping, it was time to go to work and accomplish what we were there for, to go 1-0 that week. That was the plan each and every week, as Coach Chango put it so simply to us for months. This was the goal all season, and we weren’t going to change because we were in Monroe.

After a hard fought first half, we walked into the locker room muddy, cold, and trailing 21-7. After halftime adjustments and pep talks, we stormed back onto the field for the third quarter, marched down the field for a touchdown, and then Coach Chango called the familiar staple of our Cajun team, the onside kick. When the referee signaled that we had recovered the ball, Coach Chango slowly turned towards us, the players, and shouted, “Can ya feel it? Can ya feel it?” This was the moment that changed the game. Our guys were not going to let this be the last game our seniors would play. We were going to practice on Monday.

A couple of defensive stops and offensive touchdowns later, the game was tied at 35 with 28 seconds left in regulation. Coach Chango signaled for a long ball to senior wide receiver McColl Simons. The referee signaled a catch and touchdown.

We would hang on to win.

To me, this game wasn’t as much about football as it was about us as a team and a family, finally realizing the potential we had to be great. We realized that potential on a cold Friday night in Monroe, where there was no magic, just forty warriors going to work. h

Past & Present

As a young child, I was always competitive. I had to be the best at everything, and had to know how I compared to everyone else. In fact, that’s why my parents sent me to Country Day – upon visiting, they gained the sense that it was a place where I’d learn to compete against myself, instead of with others. My parents, it turns out, were right. Teachers at Country Day encouraged me to challenge myself and broaden the boundaries of my knowledge, but in a way that separated my own academic pursuits from concerns about other students’ success. My competitive nature thus became an asset instead of a handicap.

The intellectual rigor that is the hallmark of a Country Day education allowed me to foster an almost-obsession with the French language. Although my parents encouraged me to choose Spanish for its practicality, my sixth-grade self knew that French was the way to go. I loved the sound of French, its beauty, floridity, and sophistication. Beginning in seventh grade, I was enrolled in Honors French, and my grasp of the language grew exponentially throughout high school, where Madame Ellis and Louis-P. (Mr. Swain’s French teacher alter-ego) exposed me to the works of Voltaire, Sartre, and Laclos.

In the meantime, I cultivated a burgeoning interest in history as an academic discipline.

Howard Hunter’s AP U.S. and AP European History courses showed me, for the first time, that history was more than a series of dates, names, and places to memorize. It was, instead, a framework for thinking about the world, a means of analysis and interpretation to get at some sort of truth – of society, of human nature, and of the past.

Though I deliberated about my major for some time after starting college at Columbia, in retrospect, it is clear to me that I was always meant to be a history major. My background in French, coupled with the Hebrew and Judaic Studies interests that I had developed outside of school, eventually led me to a senior thesis topic in French Jewish history. I put my language skills to good use reviewing French and Hebrew sources, and traveled to archives in Paris, Metz (France), Jerusalem, and back home in New York. The top-notch writing skills that I learned at Country Day enabled me to convey my ideas clearly and persuasively.

These days, I am still milling around Columbia University’s campus, but as a doctoral candidate. I’ve added German and Yiddish to my linguistic repertoire – necessary evils when working on Early Modern European Jewish History. My research focuses on the intersection between Jewish culture and medicine in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In particular, my dissertation examines the role of female Jewish healers and midwives within early modern Jewish communities. I use historical methods to think about questions of gender, religious and legal authority, and medical hierarchy. My worldview is consistently guided by my historian’s mind, which considers everything through the lens of the past and its impact on the present. When I think about my own past, I know that Country Day has had a big part to play. h

Living is Education

According to progressive education sage John Dewey, education is a process of living and not a preparation for future living. To put Dewey’s wisdom into practice, Country Day Abroad: Spain allows students to spend three weeks exploring the wonders of Spain, learning its history on site, and experiencing life in a culture different from our own. This past summer, ten upper school students, accompanied by lower school Spanish teacher Antonia Angress and me, lived in Salamanca where they participated in Spanish classes while living with a host family and then spent a week traveling.

The process of living for those weeks left an indelible mark on our students, changing how they see the world, how they approach people of different cultures, and how they see themselves within a much larger global framework. Ally Pitalo 2017 reflected after our trip, “I learned that people from different places are actually very similar. It was really cool being in class because there were people from different countries but we all communicated through a common language, Spanish. It was amazing to see how languages are all so different but by learning one, you can connect to people who also speak that language.” Ally’s observation was shared by several other travelers. Elizabeth Barron 2017 reiterated Ally’s thoughts: “One of my favorite things about living in Spain was meeting the students who were from Spain.”

Our students noticed that the locals in Salamanca were welcoming and friendly. They also noticed that Spanish culture allows much more time for socializing, taking a stroll, sharing ice cream with family, going out for tapas before a late dinner at home, and spending time with friends. Country Day students were amazed that school age children still participate in a siesta, leaving school midday to go home for lunch, then returning in the afternoon to finish the day’s classes. In Salamanca, most stores, schools, and businesses close from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Such a break was quite an adjustment for American kids who tend to be constantly busy.

As I tell our students every year, “This is the time to learn to BE, not to DO. It’s okay to relax, read a book, take a nap, chat with friends, and just be.” After several days, the students adjusted extremely well to the siesta concept. In fact, they plan to lobby for its inclusion in Country Day’s upper school schedule this fall! Conley Kronenberg 2018 summed it up.

At first, one of his biggest challenges was, “not going to sleep until really late, and not sleeping during siesta.” After a week, Conley caught on, and he enjoyed his midday nap as much as the rest of the group.

Our students also experienced Spanish history through an exploration of Spain’s major cities. We explored the

Andalusian cities of Sevilla, Córdoba, and Granada, where students saw first-hand how elements of Jewish, Arabic, and Christian cultures coexisted harmoniously for centuries.

We toured the Alhambra Palace in Granada and learned that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella resided there after the expulsion of the last Moorish king. We learned of the expulsion of the Jews and the Moors from Spain and we saw evidence of the Christian reconquest of Spain in Córdoba. We visited the Monastery of San Esteban in Salamanca where Queen Isabella met with Christopher Columbus and finally agreed to fund his voyage, only after he had been imprisoned in the same monastery for heresy. We visited Segovia’s famous Alcázar where the Catholic monarchs ruled. We saw the tomb of Christopher Columbus in Sevilla, and those of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Granada. Through it all, our students were impressed by their ability to see this country’s history through art and architecture. As Carol Guidry 2018 stated, “I learned so much from this trip. It really broadened my mind to what other cultures are like, and it made me realize how historic Spanish cities are when compared to the more recently founded cities in the United States.”

Perhaps as important as the history, culture, and norms learned by our students was the sense of independence that such a trip afforded. During the trip, students were responsible for managing their money, getting themselves to school on time each day, and navigating Salamanca. Brice Berger 2018 reflected, “The trip allowed me the opportunity to learn more about myself and handle my needs without my parents. I liked having the freedom to walk around and be independent.” Cece Tyson 2017 stated, “I am more open to new things. Spain helped me be open minded.” Elena Barry 2017 agreed, “My favorite part of living in Spain was definitely the two week homestay because of the connection I made between being semi-independent and, soon, living on my own in college.” Antonia and I were thrilled that nearly all of our students hope to study in Spain in college.

Of course, there are the other aspects to living in another country that cannot go unmentioned. We consumed gallons of ice cream, tons of churros con chocolate, and vats of café con leche. There was no end to the new candies and pastries to sample and everyone loved the classic tortilla española, or Spanish egg and potato omelet. We supported Spain’s economy with some serious shopping but most important of all, we spent hours together as a group, sitting in Salamanca’s peerless Plaza Mayor, sharing tapas and lemon Fanta, watching the people go by, practicing Spanish, laughing, and just being. h

What’s the Probability?

As I sat with 230 other citizens of Jefferson Parish enjoying the amenities of free Wi-Fi, television, and people-watching in the jury assembly room, I imagined myself as a Bingo ball strategically positioned at the bottom of the cage, hoping I might avoid being the next juror selected. Alas, my efforts failed, for I was suddenly lined up as potential juror number fifteen of forty, to enter the courtroom of Honorable Judge Donald A. Rowan, Jr. I progressed from the hard benches behind the barricade to the comfortable front-row seats to observe and learn a great deal about our legal system, all while I conversed and worked alongside ten other individuals whom I might not otherwise have met.

During voir dire, the interview process for jury candidates, I was quite surprised to hear that one selectee was a medical student. Being the parent of a medical student and knowing my son’s clinical and classroom commitments, I wondered how this young man found the time to be here. This same potential juror, named Hani Nakhoul, heard me say that I taught AP Computer Science at Metairie Park Country Day School. As we deliberated over our lunch options in the jury room, this inquisitive, articulate, and observant young man introduced himself, and I learned that he was not only a medical student, but also a Ph.D. candidate in computational biology at Tulane and a Country Day alumnus from the Class of 2003.

Now, take a look at the snippet of code presented at the beginning…what is the probability that a computer running that line of code would place me in the same jury pool as Hani?

Pleased to hear that Computer Science was being taught at Country Day, Hani began peppering me with questions about the curriculum. I excitedly informed him of the goals and objectives of AP Computer Science, the infusion of computational thinking taught in Pre-K and through 12th grade, the School’s leadership role in exposing students to algorithmic problem-solving during the Hour of Code, and plans for two additional high school courses, Introduction to Computer Science, and Creative Design through Art, Math and Computer Science. We also took great delight in discussing the opportunities provided by a computer science and engineering lab within the new Science and Engineering Building. But I soon realized that I couldn’t fully answer some of Hani’s questions because, as an alumnus with finely honed research skills, he wanted to know how the computer science educational experience impacted the students.

Rather than answer for my former students, I gave Hani the opportunity to meet the first graduates of Country Day who took AP Computer Science. In early June, with the enticement of pizza and sugar cookies, eight members of the Class of 2015 came back to Country Day after finishing their first year of college to meet with Hani. In addition to bringing together the AP Computer Science students, we witnessed a Country Day moment when Hani, a Harvard graduate, and Robert Livaudais, a Dartmouth sophomore, met once again after being senior-kindergarten buddies in 2003.

The gathering of David Beerman, Walker Bright, Alex Chesnut, Harrison Downs, William Downs, Fahrawn Gill, Robert Livaudais, and D.J. Shea provided a lively discussion; the conversation bounced across many topics, including curriculum, college preparedness, college life, and future goals. Excerpts from the exchange follow: About the Computer Science Students from the Class of 2015: David Beerman completed his freshman year at Auburn University and attends Louisiana State University, where he studies business and English; he plans to teach at the university level.

Walker Bright loves the University of Virginia, where he is taking a diverse schedule to determine which major to pursue. He finds computer science fascinating because of its real world application and also has an interest in economics.

Alex Chesnut attends the University of Utah and is pursuing a computer science track because of its interesting blend of language and science. He still writes fiction.

Harrison Downs is pursuing computer science through the engineering program at Tufts. He is minoring in drama and writing software apps and novels.

Q { Hani: What was your most intellectually exciting experience during your school years?

Q { Mrs. Lawrence: There’s a new Science and Engineering Building being built. What would you want to see in it?

A } William: Things that enhance a creative space: bean bag chairs, study rooms, areas for collaboration; a place to express ideas and work through problems with other people as well as a place to work on and express ideas for independent projects.

A } Robert: Right after graduation from Country Day, I built a 3D printer.

I found guides online on how to do it, but I had to piece the whole thing together from multiple sources. I scavenged for parts and also took things apart to get motors and mechanical parts. Then I had to code it. It all came together and it worked.

A } Harrison: Clear plastic walls to write on.

A } Alex: Luckily, for my Country Day Capstone Project, I had an interest in something that could be written about in a paper. My paper was on video games as art, and I felt pretty motivated throughout. The internship that followed was with Loyola University professor Timothy Welsh, and the subject matter I worked on now applies to what I’m studying.

Q { Hani: Is there anything you’d like to go back and tell yourself as a high school freshman?

A } Fahrawn: Taking computer science was very satisfying and was philosophical, because one can organize every detail of their thought.

Q { Hani: Why did you decide to study computer science at school? What did you discover about it?

A } Robert: Taking computer science at Country Day was worth my time because it made me realize how much I like problem solving (Fahrawn nods his head and voices agreement).

A } D.J.: I learned about programming even before taking Computer Science at Country Day. My intro to programming class at USC was a retread of Country Day’s Computer Science class, so I was prepared.

A } Walker: With the number of problem sets we covered in class, I was most prepared for the AP Computer Science exam, and it was the easiest one for me because of that preparation.

A } Harrison: Class was worth it. I was self-taught for five years before the AP Computer Science class, and I didn’t learn it efficiently. It was my first exposure to formal programming. I like to build things and this transitioned naturally into majoring in computer science.

A } Fahrawn: Because it’s the most important/growing industry that applies everywhere.

A } David: All the time in AP Computer Science, I felt that I was building something and taking risks with the potential of failing. I struggled to pass for the first semester. I kept going because it was cool; it was fun. I had never done anything like that before and I wanted to master it. It helped me get an “A” in MatLab [at Auburn]. MatLab is like Java on training wheels, but it’s still difficult.

A } Alex: My dad is a systems analyst, so I thought it would be a good thing to look into. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I found that it was a pretty interesting mix of language and math held together by logic.

A } Walker: Coolest thing ever!

A } Robert: A 3D printer and robotics, any equipment that lets you create through code and design.

A } David: Do more fun stuff; I did track freshman year but should have gotten involved in more things at the start. Look for more things that aren’t just in school.

A } Fahrawn: Don’t worry so much, and get better grades.

A } Hani: I valued class too much; I had great experiences and great teachers here; I coasted on English in college because my crucible for writing was here; however, other students were more versed in problem solving than I was in math and science. So try more things and experiment more; be a little more independent and take risks; build something and maybe fail.

Q { Hani: What are you most excited about in the next few years?

A } David: The ability to study more of what I’m interested in.

A } Harrison: I’m excited to do more higher level programming; being self taught, I have learned a few skills, but I don’t have the time to self teach.

I am looking forward to dedicated time to learn. Next semester I have assembly language and machine structure.

Q { Fahrawn to Hani: Do you have any advice for someone studying cancer research?

A } Hani: Statistical computing and data science are growth fields in technology. If you’re excited about biology and computing, get the hard stuff out of the way regarding your formal education and learn about the other stuff that interests you later on. If it’s not coming easy, take a more systematic approach, get someone to force you to learn the hard things; form mentorships in your research, start thinking and exploring, because there’s not enough time to try everything.

At the end of the evening, my former students walked away with valuable insights from Hani. Two jury duty summonses brought this group together for one evening to talk about Country Day, Computer Science, careers, and life. h Many thanks to Jen Sciortino for volunteering to scribe the information exchange. William Downs is studying meteorology, earth science, and geoscience at Williams College. His studies also include math and computer science.

Fahrawn Gill is studying computer science and biology at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. During his freshman year he wrote Arduino code and built a circuit to collect energy/ power consumption for the supermileage vehicle at the University of Michigan.

Robert Livaudais is majoring in computer science at Dartmouth College, where he enjoyed his computer architecture class that simulated a computer that ran from assembly language. At Dartmouth, he also pursues hiking, white-water kayaking, backpacking, and the Ultimate Frisbee team.

D.J. Shea is studying computer science at University of Southern California with a focus in games. He has a summer internship at In Exile as a programmer, where he is working on other coders’ software game development.

THE POWER OF PROJECTS: SCIENCE & PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING

THE DESIGN PROCESS Students begin the design process for project-based learning with a driving question, problem, or challenge.

The goal of the project is to address an authentic issue that will provide for meaningful learning by helping students to make real-world connections to content. After identifying the challenge, the next step is to include necessary content to arrive at a viable solution. Students may need to use prior knowledge, research ideas and articles, watch videos, and carry out classroom discussions to acquire this expertise.

ADJUSTING PEDAGOGY Over the years, my educational goal has been to inspire students to love the sciences and become curious about the world around them. As I gained valuable teaching experience and acquired a master’s degree, I grew even more knowledgeable about various learning styles and best

practices. As a result, I eventually became interested in a strategy called project or problem-based learning and began to adopt a form of it in my own classroom.

Project-based learning incorporates a kinesthetic teaching style that challenges students to creatively research solutions to a real world problem. In addition, a variety of skills are gained, such as teamwork and collaboration. This approach allows students the opportunity to problem solve while exploring their ideas in a way that makes sense to them.

Project-based learning helps students gain resilience and time-management skills as they work through the design process over and over again, until they get it right. Students also gain empathy as they educate themselves and others about a posed problem and work to understand how their classmates might reach different conclusions.

COUNTRY DAY

FORMATION Teaching science lends itself to a hands-on approach. When I was in seventh grade, our dissection of a fetal pig solidified my love of biology. I don’t think I even noticed the smell of the formalin as I cut into the pig’s body cavity and located the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. We opened the stomach to see its musculature and cut connective tissue to measure the intestines, and I was mesmerized.

In college, as I completed my studies in marine science, I caught and tagged sea turtles as part of my professor’s research team, I counted eggs as adult females made their nests on the beach, and I learned how to measure and weigh juveniles without getting bitten. Each experience, each adventure, left a lasting impression on me. After graduation, a few years later, I began teaching through AmeriCorps at a small school in Florida. As I began forming my own teaching philosophy, I drew on these early experiences to help guide me. The hands-on, active-learning experiences that inspired my curiosity and love of science drove me to use a similar pedagogy in the classroom.

A PLACE TO RETURN TO

Beginning after lunch and continuing until 3:00 pm, PMK is the afternoon program for all Kindergarten students. Students go to special PMK classrooms for a program of individualized, developmentally appropriate activities to promote academic growth, large and small motor development, social and emotional growth, and artistic expression. Betsy McGovern and Remi Ottelin currently serve as the PMK Team Leaders.

WHAT IS PMK? Among all the answers I have received to this question, my favorite answer is, “A place everyone wants to return to.”

When I was a new mommy here, back in 1987, I confess it was always a bit mysterious to me. There was no website, of course, and back then there wasn’t even a paper newsletter to help me understand where my children were all afternoon and what they were doing. Whereas I knew my children’s morning teachers very well, the afternoon ones were names that came up without faces, and even then, what I heard from my children was not always accurate; as in the beloved “Miss Dolly,” actually named Anne Stolley, who taught them art and was always patient and kind.

When I started teaching here in 2003, I learned the details. After lunch, the kindergartners from all six K-1-2 classrooms come together in PMK, where several teachers worked with them as an entire grade. I worked with Lanier Watson, one of PMK’s two

founding teachers and my primary source of information for this article.

Afternoon Kindergarten, or PMK, was created in 1979. Before we get there, however, we need to go back a bit further. In the late 1960s, educational research began to show that children learn best at their own rate; consequently the first mixed-grade primary class was tested at Country Day. The success of this initiative quickly led to the current multi-age K-1-2 rooms.

Everyone loved the multi-age classes: the teachers, the parents, and the students. But there were adjustments to be made. As Lanier Watson put it, “The only flaw anyone saw to the mixed age groupings was the limited social sphere.” If you came in as a kindergarten girl, there were only three other kindergarten girls in your class. PMK was the answer to this situation and enabled the entire fortyeight or so kindergarteners to get to know each other very well.

During the first few years, PMK was an optional program. No other

independent school in the New Orleans area had a full day program for kindergarten, so Lanier remembers wondering if it would work. Options for two, three, or five days a week were available, and it wasn’t until later that the full-day kindergarten program became mandatory.

The original kindergarten teachers were Lanier and Sherry Frohlich, and they were responsible for the initial program framework and design.

Because of Sherry's background as a Montessori teacher, PMK was set up with centers where children could choose work that interested them. For example, there were many choices in the Practical Life area, one being shoe tying skills, something we still teach each year. In fact, certificates were given to those achieving the skill!

Sherry was a chess player, and thus started teaching the game in PMK, also teaching weaving and origami, personal passions.

As the program grew, Louise McIlhenny joined the teaching team to teach art. She created the collage

area, still a popular choice to this day, and made papier-mâché puppets with the children. In 1966, the year the current Lower School building was complete, Ann Stolley was hired as a kindergarten teacher. As Ann said, “I came with the building!” With a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a passion for teaching, Ann remembers being allowed to create costumes, hats, artwork, and whatever suited the fancy of a creative child. Under Ann’s skillful and loving hands were born the cherished traditions of creating selfportraits, holiday cards, Mardi Gras masks, a May Day parade, and all the artwork, set décor, and costumes for Merry Meeting.

Sally Treuting was next on board.

She expanded the program to the outdoors, teaching all to jump rope, hula hoop, hang on the monkey bars, and delight in racing. Sally also started gardening with the children, tending to flowers and herbs.

Teachers were added as PMK continued to grow, and as the program grew, so did the space. Originally PMK Continued on page 49

On a Mission: Defining the Relationship Between Intellect & Character

“STRENGTH OF INTELLECT AND STRENGTH OF CHARACTER” Intellect and character need to go hand in hand. Many through the centuries have recognized this important relationship. But what does this mean? How does this occur? Character is much more complex than we may think, and its effect on intellect can be profound. All too often, these two are taught as separate entities. In some cases, character is not considered at all. However, we know through current research (if not good old common sense) that character is key to intellectual development, as well as life success. At Country Day this is at our core, and our children live in an age where the nurturing of these two elements has never been more relevant.

At an ISAS conference a few years ago, the message was clear: as a country our antiquated educational model is in need of a paradigm shift. Traditional pedagogy, especially at the middle, secondary, and college level, has focused on competitive achievement and not intellect. While students become masters of content knowledge for the sake of the grade, they miss out on deeper learning, including creative and critical thinking.

Why is this important? Tony Wagner, the Expert in Residence at Harvard University’s new Innovation Lab, and Senior Research Fellow at the Learning and Policy Institute, points out that while schools are graduating bright students, the workplace is finding that they are missing key skills needed for companies to be competitive in the world marketplace. Our students seem to be lacking character attributes, also known as soft or non-cognitive skills. Wagner notes seven key competencies that seem to be lacking in how educators are preparing our students: critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, adaptability, initiative, effective communication, accessing and analysis of information, and curiosity and imagination. Other experts note that, along with the traits identified by Wagner, there are additional character traits such as empathy, compassion, grit, and a positive growth mindset that also need our attention.

IN A RELATIONSHIP “Education of the mind without education of the heart is no education at all.”

Aristotle Intellect is not just our capacity for knowledge but more our ability to understand, reason, think critically, analyze, and solve problems. Character is often described as a person’s moral or ethical values, such as empathy, compassion and integrity, that define and guide our lives. Character also includes many other important attributes, such as resilience, curiosity, creativity, and teamwork, that further define us as individuals, affect how we develop intellect and influence life satisfaction and success.

True intellect depends on its relationship to character.

We have learned, through research, that there are direct correlations between many character attributes and academic and life success. For example, brain research tells us that the human brain develops and functions more effectively in concert with other brains. A recent study out of the M.I.T. found that high achieving groups, rather than depending on members with exceptional I.Qs, demonstrated three characteristics: social sensitivity (empathy), gave equal time to each other, and had more women in the group (sorry, men).

Psychologist and educator Angela Duckworth, in her book, Grit: Passion, Perseverance and the Science of Success, has observed that a person’s grit, also called resilience, can be a better predictor of academic and professional success than I.Q. Grit, as defined by Duckworth, is passion and perseverance for long term goals.

Psychologist Carol Dweck expands on this idea to point out that a person’s mindset can also be a determining factor. Children who believe they can reach their goals, embrace challenge, and accept failure as an opportunity to grow and move forward have what she calls a “growth mindset.” Having this mindset is often a better predictor of success than I.Q. Studies also show correlations between certain character traits, academic success, and life satisfaction. For example, curiosity, creativity, and time management correlate with mathematics and language arts grade point averages (GPA). In addition, resilience and teamwork correlate with life satisfaction. Character is key to unlocking the potential of our intellect as well as our ability to thrive in the world.

While Country Day has always recognized the importance of character, these new studies have brought a better understanding of the relationship between intellect and character, as well as better defining the character attributes that are essential for life success in today’s world. This new research provides our faculty with a great opportunity to reflect on our work and to look creatively at how we can weave these character skills into everything we do. While each division has its own initiatives, I am excited about the work of the Middle School.

Paul Tough’s book, How Children Succeed, makes clear that it is time to take stock of how we, as a Middle School, meet the needs of our students. Since 2013, the Middle School has participated in a nationwide longitudinal study, designed to measure and track the effects of specific character traits. In 2010, the organization Independent School Data Exchange (INDEX) developed the Mission Skills Assessment (MSA).

Using six core character skills, time management, teamwork, resilience, creativity, curiosity, and ethics, MSA is designed to measure growth in these skills, as well as, their relationship to academic success and life satisfaction. The study now has 87 participating independent schools from around United States and abroad with over 17,000 students participating.

The assessment consists of three metrics: student self-assessment, teacher assessment of student, and a situational metric where students respond to real life situations. In each instance, students are rated based on the six character skills. The data allows us to see how we compare to other independent schools by metric, grade, gender, and over time. Country Day just completed its third year in this study.

While it affirms that there is much good work already in place and in keeping with our mission, we continue to explore ways to bring these character skills into our daily lexicon and culture and to develop how we can teach these skills explicitly through our advisory program and more importantly, implicitly through our curriculum.

NEXT STEPS Given what we have learned, who we are as a school, and our mission, our next logical steps lead to social-emotional learning (SEL). This spring, at the annual MSA conference, Vicki Zakrzewski, Ph.D., the Education Director at the Greater Good Science Center at University of California at Berkeley, summarized the need for SEL in schools. Zakrzewski explained that research shows that early social/emotional (character) competencies predict adult outcomes (academic and life success). The work we do now as educators is important as children and adolescents form their identities. Children need to develop resilience, empathy, compassion, gratitude, and mindfulness. SEL helps students develop these key prosocial skills by becoming more self and socially aware and learning how to manage both.

This summer, one of our middle school faculty members attended a week-long workshop at the Greater Good Science Center to learn more about next steps to bring SEL into both the lower and middle school divisions. We hope to integrate a SEL program into both divisions, providing a common language and set of skills for students as they move through lower and middle school, further developing a culture that fosters what we hold sacred – strength of intellect and strength of character.

IN A NUTSHELL When one reads our School’s mission statement and our honor code, it is quite clear that Country Day understands the inextricable link between intellect and character.

about solving their problem or challenge. They may create blueprints and design and build prototypes to achieve this.

During this part of the process, groups often need to make iterations or changes in their original idea in order to be more successful or achieve their goal. Once groups get to the point where they are satisfied with their result, the students are assessed. This can happen individually or as a group and may be accomplished as a peer review or as a more traditional assessment, such as a quiz. Students then reach the final step of the process where they share what they have learned with others. Ideally, this happens in the form of an expo in the community where students once again feel the connections made to the real world.

housed in the center room of the current PMK space, the small collage room was added first. Then the large room next to the bookstore was added, nicknamed the “locker room” because of the beautiful, hand built cypress lockers that still line the wall. Science had always been taught in PMK, but under the guidance of Marsha Biguenet, it became a focus and a formal part of the curriculum. Marsha lobbied for a dedicated space, and the science lab was added, dubbed The Science Zone by former teacher Heather Nicolais. It was also due to Marsha’s leadership that I was allowed to begin the Global Studies curriculum.

The current teaching staff is Remi Ottelin, who teaches art; Kirsh Kronenberg, who teaches science; Charlotte Haygood Gregory 1998, who teaches chess and perceptual puzzles; and Claiborne Moses, who takes charge of the backyard and encourages young authors at the writing center. Although these are our primary teaching responsibilities, we all do many things in PMK. One of the most fascinating things I found while researching this article was how PMK embodies the passions and talents of individual teachers. Sherry brought her passion for chess, and actually taught Charlotte, who is now carrying on the tradition herself! Lanier brought her passion for developing high-level thinking and problem solving in the perceptual puzzles, also carried on now by her former student, Charlotte. Ann brought her creativity and joy, Sally her love of the outdoors, and Marsha her understanding of PMK science as an invaluable part of the Country Day curriculum. Just as we encourage our students, PMK has encouraged teachers to teach from the heart.

My own experience illustrates this beautifully. Years ago, I went to Marsha Biguenet our lower school principal at the time, and explained that I had a background in international studies, and asked if I could begin a program in PMK to learn about children around the world. Her immediate reply was, “Go with it!” Also, when I first began, because I had worked as a folk musician for many years, Ann asked if I could begin each PMK day with a little song; we now do so everyday. A middle school teacher once told me that she witnessed her seventh grade students singing all the PMK songs they could remember. Those are the moments that make Country Day and PMK the place everyone wants to come back to. h Many thanks to all the teachers mentioned, who were kind enough to answer my many questions.

SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM In the classroom, my curriculum and pedagogy constantly evolve. I integrate current events as often as possible, keep up with changes in technology, and visit other schools and classrooms to learn from colleagues. This year, one of the more successful projects came as a result of my summer work with the Country Day Faculty Fellows Program, which provides opportunities for faculty to engage in research of their choosing, creating a laboratory for ideas, an educational think tank. I adapted a project that incorporated physical science concepts of force, energy transfer, and simple machines to challenge students to create and build devices that would help someone with a disability. The results were better than I could have imagined.

My students had the opportunity to collaborate while being creative and weaving their knowledge of various physical science concepts into a physical solution. The devices they created were thoughtful and imaginative, and many of them could be marketed in the real world. The students’ favorite part of the project came at the conclusion, when they had the opportunity to participate in an Inventor’s Expo in the middle school courtyard. They thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to show off their products and to talk about what they had learned along the way.

LOOKING FORWARD As educational philosopher John Dewey states in his book, “Democracy and Education,” “Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.” The problem solving process teaches skills that are necessary in all fields of study, in future careers, and in life. I hope the experiences my students shared in my classroom will not only make them successful in all these aspects but will leave them with a genuine, deep love for science. h

In middle and upper school, students are challenged to apply their mathematical knowledge as the subject matter they learn becomes more abstract. Many students begin to question their own ability and begin to classify themselves as “bad” at math.

Often this comes from their belief that mathematical ability is innate, however, that is simply not true. Math is a language, a language that can be learned. Just as one learns to read a book, students must learn to decode the language of math in order to understand how to solve problems. Cajuns for Life Pierre Moses 2004 Associate at IronOak Energy and President of Tulane Entrepreneur’s Association Pierre Moses 2004 is a Senior Associate at IronOak Energy, an investment advisory and market research firm focused exclusively on solar PV, energy storage, and electric vehicle infrastructure. Pierre graduated from the College of Charleston in 2008 with a B.S. in Business Administration and a concentration in social entrepreneurship. He returned to New Orleans and began an internship with Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation. Quickly recognizing the lack of thirdparty financing in the local solar energy market, Pierre started Make It Right Solar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Make It Right Foundation. Make It Right Solar predominantly provided solar development and financing services to lowincome housing markets to make solar a cost effective resource. Make It Right Solar raised $7.5 million and completed more than 250 projects in New Orleans, Kansas City, and Newark, including more than 130 LEED Platinum projects. In 2012, Pierre was one of the founding board members of the Gulf States Renewable Energy Industries Association which encourages the development of a renewable energy economy through informed policy intervention, stakeholder education, and industry support. In 2014, Moses was recognized by Gambit Magazine’s “40 Under 40” issue as a young New Orleanian who is “making the city a better place.” Pierre completed Tulane’s MBA program in 2016 where he focused on analytics and finance and was the President of the Tulane Entrepreneur’s Association. While pursuing his masters, Pierre worked in Raleigh, NC, for Cherokee Investment Partners, a $2.2 billion private equity and venture capital fund focused on brownfield redevelopment.

Lelia Gowland 2004 Lelia Gowland is President of Gowland, LLC, a consulting firm that makes work work for women.

With a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Michigan and a BA in Sociology from the University of Texas at Dallas, Lelia has been trained to understand political, professional, and cultural systems and the way they affect women in the workplace.

Most recently an entrepreneur, Lelia has worked in government, business and not-for-profits. She combines her academic foundation and experience in each sector with a nuanced perspective about how systems impact the lives of individual women and businesses.

For individual clients, Lelia has developed innovated e-courses that provide women personalized support on negotiating a raise, a promotion, a new position, and maternity leave.

Considered a thought leader in the field, Lelia is a contributor to Forbes and has been profiled in pieces in Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire for her unique approach to negotiations for women.

Alumni Weekend March 2016 Members of the Class of 1936 through the Class of 1991 enjoyed a weekend of friends, food, and traditions.

A highlight of the weekend was when Little Group sang an old Country Day favorite, “Now the Day is Done,” to the Class of 1956.

Stirling Barrett 2007 graduated from the Meadows School of Art at Southern Methodist University in Dallas where he majored in creative advertising and minored in printmaking and photography. Stirling’s photography depicts the indigenous culture of New Orleans and showcases the unique architecture and diversity of the city. His photography features collages with small sections of subject matter coming together into a final composition. Each frame is unique, and a finished piece of artwork may contain one hundred to five hundred individual images. In addition to being a prominent New Orleans artist, Stirling has launched KREWE, a New Orleans based and culturally inspired independent eyewear brand. It is now one of the fastest growing eyewear companies in the United States. Stirling serves as the Creative Director and designs every pair of KREWE sunglasses by hand. KREWE’s sunglasses have been featured in national publications such as Vogue, ELLE, Women’s Wear Daily, W Magazine, Architectural Digest, and Garden & Gun. KREWE was also recently named a 2016 Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist. Stirling attributes much of his creative style and success to his education at Metairie Park Country Day school, where these skills were nurtured, allowing him to grow as a student photographer. We are so happy for his success and to call him a Cajun.

Yasmin Gabriel 2000 First Woman of Color in Law School to Serve in the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates, Human Rights Activist, Special Assistant to the President of Tougaloo College Yasmin Gabriel 2000 graduated from Country Day with the desire to become a medical doctor. She attended Ben Franklin Math and Science Magnet School before Country Day. Gabriel was a 1994 graduate of SummerBridge, now called Breakthrough New Orleans, which is a program that focuses on core academic skills, helping disadvantaged young people reach their full potential and placing them on the path towards college. Yasmin’s 1994 visit to Country Day at the age of 12 sold her on the school, and she took on all of its challenges, taking as many AP science and math classes as she could in upper school. She graduated from Spelman College in 2004, and entered LSU in 2005. When Katrina hit, it changed her career path as well as her life path, making her acutely aware of the importance of students’ rights and government responsibility in the wake of a natural disaster. She founded UpGrade America and produced a documentary which focused on college life after Katrina. This documentary gave rise to a movement of youth civic engagement and served as a model to prepare other academic communities in the event of a federally declared disaster. Her work to raise awareness was recently honored by the Urban League of Greater New Orleans as a “Katrina Hero” during the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. After Katrina, Yasmin left Baton Rouge for New York, where she worked for the National Urban League and Urban League of Greater Columbus (GA) for 2 years. In 2007 she enrolled in Howard University School of Law. While in law school, she was elected to two terms as the law student delegate to the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates and was the first woman of color to reach this position. After law school, she worked as a law clerk in New Jersey Superior Court and as staff attorney for the Advancement Project, working to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. After law school, she traveled extensively through Australia, Africa and South America, learning about other cultures along the way. In 2014, she was hired as Special Assistant to the President of Tougaloo College, a historically African-American university in Jackson, Mississippi, where she serves as the youngest member of the President’s cabinet. She continues her public interest work with a focus on voters’ rights and youth activism.

Cajuns for Life Roy Perrin 1980 Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, U.S. Department of State Roy Perrin 1980 recently left the Iraqi Kurdistan Region where he served as the Deputy Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, and is now back in Washington D.C. working on Central America issues in the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. Before his Iraq service, Roy served several months as the Chargé d’Affaires, at the Embassy of the United States in San José, Costa Rica, where he was also the Embassy’s Counselor for Political, Economic and Narcotics Affairs. Roy also worked in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China as an economic officer, and served for an extended period as acting Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu, China.

He’s also worked overseas at embassies in Caracas, Venezuela and Bangkok, Thailand, and in Washington, D.C. in the State Department’s Operations Center Crisis Management office. Roy’s foreign languages include Spanish, Thai, Chinese, and “whatever French he still remember from Mr. Swain’s class at Country Day.” He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University and a J.D. from Tulane Law School, is married to Michele A. Perrin and they have a daughter, Isabel, who is a recent graduate of the College of William & Mary.

Manya-Jean Gitter 2009 Deputy Chief of Staff of AJC: Global Jewish Advocacy Manya-Jean Gitter 2009 graduated from Brown University in 2013. A Political Science and International Relations major, she pursued research on the intersection of human rights protection and national security in at-risk countries. Upon graduating, Manya was named a Presidential Political Appointee to serve Ambassador Samantha Power, United States Ambassador to the United Nations and member of President Obama’s Cabinet.

Manya-Jean is currently Ambassador Power’s primary aide at United Nations Security Council Sessions and meetings with United States Government, United Nations, and foreign and non-governmental officials. Working in conjunction with the State Department, the United Nations, and the White House, she is actively involved in issues of national security, humanitarian aid, economic and sustainable development, and peacekeeping for countries across the globe. Manya-Jean credits her passions for social justice, community building, and government to her experience evacuating from Hurricane Katrina and returning home to her beloved New Orleans. Manya now works as the Deputy Chief of Staff at AJC, a global Jewish advocacy organization that advances a democracy and human rights agenda worldwide. In this role she manages the Chief of Staff’s diplomatic portfolio and regularly staffs overseas missions across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
