A Story about Ball Marks

If you are somewhat new to golf or a seasoned veteran; a high handicap player working on lowering your scores; or already possess the skills to “go low” on any given day, the rules of golf etiquette should remain a constant. A significant portion of golf etiquette relates to care of the golf course including: where you should and should not drive your golf carts, filling divots properly, and of course, repairing your ball marks.

Here is a photo of hole #1 green at MPCC. Each one of those golf balls represents a ball mark, whether it’s a bruise or dent from a pitch mark or a massive lesion left from a poorly repaired or unrepaired golf shot. For what it worth, we used 4 full baskets of balls from the range, which is equal to around 1200 total golf balls.

SIDE NOTE: You may have noticed a majority of the ball marks are located on the front half of the green. This is where most amateur golfers tend to land their golf shots. I am sure our Golf Professionals would agree that most golfers err on the side of taking less club for their approach shots to the green. This is only worth mentioning as a useful piece of information if you are ever wondering why the front of so many greens seem more beat up than the back.

It’s a combination of golfer foot traffic entering the green, the concentration of golf shots, and also just happens to be where our surface water tends to run off the putting surfaces as just about all of our green are canted from back to front.

More importantly though you can see the impact that such a large amount of golf shots make on a putting surface. The old adage “repair your own ball mark and one other” is a good rule to follow. It is true that in the winter months we don’t get the healing that we do when the turf is actively growing, but knowing this drives home the point that properly repairing your ball marks is even more crucial. The worst case scenario is when an ball mark goes untouched, then failed to be seen by a mower operator the next morning. One the mower scalps the unrepaired mark, the damage can be seen for up to 3 weeks in some cases. A good rule of thumb,as witnessed over our years of maintaining turf, is that a properly repair mark may be healed in as little as a couple of days in season and not that evident even off season, whereas an poorly repair mark may be seen for eternity it seems.

Hopefully this illustration opens some eyes. We didn’t exaggerate…we promise! Thank you very much for your continued support of our operation and your assistance with these ever so important details which in the end make your golfing experience much better.

Well, this is about as good as it gets in our opinion and even though he is speaking specifically to his fellow members at Lake Nona, I don’t think there is a single golf course that wouldn’t benefit from watching this video he put on Instagram. Proper Golf Attire at MPCC The Golf and Greens Committee has received complaints related to dress code violations on the course and on the practice facilities. As we know, the golf facilities of the Club have experienced an increase in participation since the onset of COVID a year ago. With the increase in participation comes an increase in violations. I will point out that proper golf attire is the first item addressed in our golf Rules and Regulations, followed by Rules of Play and Etiquette. The sequence of the published rules implies how important proper attire can be to maintaining the golf culture of our wonderful Club. I would like to take this opportunity to remind each of you of our policy regarding proper golf attire.

Dress Code Policy: Proper golf attire is required on the course and practice facilities at all times. This requirement applies to all Club members, eligible dependents and their guests. Denim, cargo pants/shorts, ripped or frayed clothing, tennis clothing, and athleisure clothing are not appropriate golf attire. Golf shoes must have soft spikes and flip-flops are prohibited.

Gentlemen: Shirts must have sleeves and a collar or a mock/turtleneck (collar must be taller than a crew neck shirt). Shirttails must be tucked in at all times. Shorts must have at least a 5” inseam and caps must be worn appropriately with the bill facing forward.

Ladies: Halter tops, racerbacks, tank tops, t-shirts and any top that exposes the midriff are not permitted.

Sleeveless tops may be worn if they have a collar. Skirts, skorts, dresses and shorts must be at least midthigh. Leggings may only be worn under previously stated appropriate apparel.

As noted in the first sentence, it is the responsibility of each of us to ensure that we remind our guests and dependents of the policy as the golf professional staff has been asked to enforce the policy more strictly.

Eric, Michelle French and the rest of the staff take great pride in making sure the pro shop is stocked with appropriate golf attire as well as lifestyle pieces that are intended for off-course wear. Please do not hesitate to ask a member of the Professional Staff if a particular piece is allowable for golf or the practice facilities.

Golf Born and raised in the Chicago area, Rachel and her husband Peter relocated to Charlotte this spring. Over the past three years, Rachel served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Illinois. During her time at WCC, Rachel gained invaluable experience organizing member leagues and events, and worked closely with the junior program. Spending the winter months in South Florida, Rachel has been fortunate to work at facilities such Raptor Bay Golf Club and Olde Hickory Golf & Country Club.

Rachel played at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa but eventually completed her college golf career with the Lady Cardinals at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.

Shortly after receiving her degree in Sports Management and Marketing, Rachel enrolled in the Professional Golf Management program through the PGA of America where she earned her Class A certification in 2020.

Rachel and Peter were married in October of 2020. Together they share a love for their beloved Chicago sports teams. In their spare time, they can be found traveling with family and friends or enjoying the outdoors with their Golden Retriever “Luna”.

The Coronavirus gave you the first legitimate reason to not go to the gym. But with the vaccine distribution in full force, it looks as if that excuse is running out. When you feel ready to come back, you’ll find that it’s nice to be surrounded by fitness enthusiasts. The windows are open, we are wearing masks and we are following safety protocols.

But please play it smart; consider easing back into a routine with the help of a personal trainer. It’s been a while since you’ve been here and it’s easy to forget the finer points of proper workout technique. And it’s really nice to be coached by a trainer who is next to you (6 feet away) and not talking to you through a screen.

We offer personal training, massage therapy, nutrition services, Pilates reformer training and group exercise. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 704-790-7891.
