Welcome Don Smith, Our New GM Dear Fellow MPCC Members: I am delighted to announce Donald Smith as our new General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Myers Park Country Club. Don is currently the General Manager of privately-owned, top-30 world-ranked club Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. Riviera was designed by golf course architects George C. Thomas Jr. and William P. Bell; it has been the primary host for the Genesis Invitational (originally the Los Angeles Open), an annual event on the PGA Tour in February. The 2021 edition was the 58th held at Riviera. Riviera has hosted three major championships: the U.S. Open and two PGA Championships. In addition, it was the site of the U.S. Senior Open and the U.S. Amateur. The Club is scheduled to host the Olympics in 2028. In late April, six initial in-person interviews took place, followed by interviews with two finalists covering two consecutive full days. Each was able to meet and have multiple interactions with the Board and our Senior Leadership Team. In the end, it was a unanimous decision from the Search Committee between two outstanding candidates, finalized with approval from the Board. Don has a long history of industry experience, including overseeing the development and performance of Toll Golf and Country Club's premier private club portfolio, including club properties in Raleigh, NC, Palm Springs, CA, Parkland and Jupiter, FL, and the Snowmass Club, Aspen–Snowmass, CO. Additionally, Don was the General Manager of MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C., and spent an early portion of his career at Crooked Creek Golf Club in Fuquay Varina, N.C. He also spent seven years with ClubCorp, where he was recognized under their STAR University programs. Don wanted to share his excitement directly, stating: Joining you all at Myers Park is truly a homecoming for my family. It is an honor to be selected as your new General Manager and providing us the opportunity to call North Carolina home once again. I have had the chance to work in some of the most prestigious clubs in the world throughout my career and am looking forward to bringing my experience to you at Myers Park for generations to come. Over the next several weeks, Don will be visiting the Club to prepare for his official start date slated for late June and will look for a home in the area for him and his family. We are all very excited to attract someone with the talent and experience that Don possesses, and he is especially enthused to join our Club. Search Committee Chair Hans Warren – and Search Committee members Brian Boone, John Comly, Sherry Harris, Allison Moss, and Ed Spears – worked diligently with our executive search firm, KK&W, to set criteria, evaluate, and interview candidates. Additionally, club Golf Course Superintendent, Scott Kennon, was also involved in representing the Senior Leadership Team in our evaluations. Search Executive Kurt Kuebler of KK&W and the entire Search Committee felt we had an exceptional group of candidates to consider. Kurt further noted: "All of the candidates were well-aware of Myers Park and the great history and reputation of the Club. They were especially enthused about the recent approval of the Master Plan project and being part of the further evolution of relevance and excellence of the Club; that was a big draw in our recruitment efforts!" I want to thank the Committee for a job very well done, and I invite you to personally thank them for their hard work when you see them. They did a tremendous service to the Club on behalf of us all and were diligent in the way they approached their duties, befitting a process of great importance to the future of our Club. I also want to acknowledge Mike Broderick and our Membership Director Silvia Lalinde for being excellent tour guides for each of the candidates, a time-consuming but critical part of this process. And, of course, Jean Zoutewelle for acting as interim G.M. I look forward to everyone meeting Don upon his arrival at the Club this summer. We'll provide more insights on that timing as we move closer, as we anticipate having a welcoming event (COVID appropriate!) shortly after that. We have a lot going on at Myers Park right now and plan to have several more communications with you over the coming weeks. We genuinely appreciate your support and input throughout our multiple projects and efforts and look forward to MPCC continuing to hold an exceptional place in our lives! Sincerely, Tom Jordak Club President On Behalf of the Board of Directors of Myers Park Country Club

2021 Crosstown Challenge Our annual Crosstown Challenge was held at Charlotte Country Club in April and did not disappoint! The MPCC team consisting of 16 members and 2 pros came out ahead and beat Charlotte 10–8. The tennis match began on Thursday, April 22nd with MPCC in the lead 6-3 after 9 matches. The golf matches took place on Friday and Charlotte won 5-4. Overall a very close match but we prevailed again, congrats gentlemen!

Men’s In House League We just completed the men’s in house league, what an exciting season! We had a new record turnout of 78 players this spring competing on Monday nights. The group was divided into 4 teams and headed by a Myers Park pro. Our very own Craig Lemley and Thomas Eek's teams were matched against one another in the finals. We had a record of 7 lines of doubles from each team with Craig’s team ultimately shutting out team Eek with a 7-0 win. Congrats to Craig and his all-star team, we will miss him as a captain.

JENNIFER HORSEY

Jenn has been teaching group exercise with us since we opened our doors in October of 2014. She started practicing yoga in 2008 and in 2010 she completed her yoga training because she wanted to give back to others what she had gained through her yoga practice. Jenn is passionate about yoga, but she believes a fitness routine should consist of cardio, strength, balance training - as well as flexibility and stretching. She teaches because she loves leading strong individuals through an energetic, challenging and fun class where members leave feeling strong - both physically and mentally. Jenn teaches our Strength & Stretch class on Monday & Wednesday at 8AM.
