Happy New Year! I hope 2024 is filled with joy for all MPCC families, and I am excited about what the year holds for our Club. I am honored to return for a second and final year as your President. As you know, we undertook a thorough review of our Bylaws in 2023; while not a complete re-write, we eliminated internal inconsistencies that had developed over the years, and we modernized a few sections. For example, one of the updated sections provides that presidents will now serve two-year terms, which is the norm at peer clubs. This change was approved by the Board in 2019 but did not make it into the Bylaws. The full redline version of the updated Bylaws can be found on the club website.

In my Clubber letter last January, I outlined “3 Big Things” and then updated you in November on our progress. Therefore, it is fitting to share our 3 Big Things for 2024:

First, we are going to commence – and complete – the racquet center renovations, which will include six dedicated pickle ball courts, a net gain of two new tennis courts, new restroom facilities and a refreshment center.

Second, we are going to utilize our new capital reserve study to proactively plan for future needs. As has been shared in other communications, our operating dues pay for operating the club; capital dues, on the other hand, pay for the usage, maintenance and replacement of capital assets. More details about capital planning will be discussed at the Annual Meeting on January 16.

The third big thing will be announced in early 2024.

By the time you read this letter, we will have announced our new Director of Golf, Tyler Blaschak. Please be sure to give Tyler and his family a warm MPCC welcome. Lastly, we will in 2024 continuously strive to enhance and improve the member experience. If you have ideas, criticisms or praise, please share with our General Manger or me. All feedback is welcome!

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 5:30 PM in the Ballroom.

The meeting will begin with a brief presentation by Club leadership. The evening will offer a 2023 year in review, the results of the comprehensive capital reserve study conducted in 2023, a preview of where the Club is headed in 2024 and a Q&A session. In order to respect everyone’s time, no questions will be taken from the floor at the meeting.

cold weather golf Cold weather golf, everyone’s favorite! Here are a couple rules of thumb that will help you make better decisions the next time you tee it up in frigid conditions.

If you have played golf even once in your life, then surely you have heard a fellow player mention how much the wind is going to affect a certain shot.

Common sayings like, “This is a one club wind” have infiltrated their way into the common golf lingo. How do YOU know how much the wind affects YOUR golf ball? What I can tell you is that the effects of wind are not linear. In windy conditions, 1 mph wind does not equal +/- 1 yard in distance simply due to swing speed, spin rates, and launch conditions being different with each club.

Headwind: As instructors, we typically see players massively underestimate the effect headwinds will have on their golf ball.

Tailwind: We tend to see players massively overestimate the effect a tailwind will have on their golf ball.

A headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps. In fact, at higher wind speeds, a headwind will typically hurt more than twice as much as a tailwind helps.

Conventional wisdom says that the golf ball will go a longer distance when the temperature is high and shorter when the temperature is low. Temperature, like wind, does not linearly affect the golf ball for all players. A baseline rule for how the temperature affects the golf ball is as follows: -2 yards +/- for every 10-degree change in temperature up or down -Use 70 degrees as your baseline temperature -*This is assuming no wind… adjustments for wind would be necessary if present Take these tips into consideration the next time you are standing in the fairway and contemplating what club to hit. If you are curious as to how the wind or temperature affects YOUR ball, schedule a time with us to have a Trackman session. Trackman can give us real time data as well as calculated data based on variables that we input.

We can change to a headwind, tailwind, and increase or decrease the temperature to see different results.

PERSONAL TRAINING SPECIAL For a limited time, the Fitness Center is offering a $100 savings on a package of 10 training sessions - individual and group. You have the month of January to make the purchase, but you have one year to use the package. Working with an MPCC trainer will give you the tools and support that you need to reach your health and fitness goals in 2024.

WHAT DOES PERSONAL TRAINING LOOK LIKE? Monday January 8 at noon During this 45-minute clinic, you will watch a trainer conduct a session with a client giving you an opportunity to see the types of exercise that you might do and the kinds of equipment that you might use. You will have a chance to ask questions and get comfortable with training. At the end of the clinic, you will see that our trainers are not mean or scary, they don’t yell, they don’t make you pick up big, heavy weights, and they are not judgmental. In fact, they are funny, kind and deeply respectful of the members.

Our trainers have the knowledge, skills and abilities to design individualized safe and effective fitness programs for every single member at MPCC.

FOAM ROLLING BASICS Wednesday, February 14th at 12:45 Foam rolling is a type of self-massage that you can do to alleviate soreness, aid in muscle repair recovery, help with injury prevention, and increase blood flow and elasticity of muscle tissues, joints and fascia. Franky Riley will lead a small group on the basics of foam rolling that will target common tight areas like the quads, hip flexors, calves, hamstrings, IT band, and upper back.

Winterization of the Tennis Facility When temperatures get below 32°F for several hours, the clay courts freeze.

As the temperatures rise, the courts begin a thawing out process that takes anywhere from a few hours to the whole day depending on the climate conditions. With a deep freeze, the clay needs to be rolled, compacted, and the lines have to be pushed down by hand. This is a very slow process, but we do whatever we can to get the clay courts open on a daily basis. In December, the southside windscreens on the courts were taken down for the sun to help speed up the thawing process. Our four hard courts are blown for leaves daily and are always playable unless it rains or snows.

We appreciate your patience when the temperatures plunge over night. Let's hope for a mild winter!
