Austin’s Farmers Market A contest for young pianists, with competition held at three locations from 8 am to 12 pm. Concert and awards ceremony featuring eight top performers at the Historic Paramount Theatre at 4:00 pm (Honorable Mentions will also be recognized at the afternoon concert). Reception following the concert and awards ceremony at the Historic Paramount Theatre. Refreshments included.

Wilder was a native of Vermont. Coming with him were Wm. Bean, step father of his wife, also his brother, Jackson Wilder, and Lewis West. They drove ten yoke of oxen and brought a small amount of household goods, arriving May 6, 1854. They immediately made a claim in section 33 and constructed a bark covered log house.

Bean also took a claim in section 33. Others of the party fenced 65 acres of land across the line in Iowa and planted corn, potatoes, and garden vegetables.

In the fall of 1854, Wilder went to McGregor, a distance of 120 miles to meet his wife, who returned with him. He had replaced his original house with a frame house where they were still living in 1894. Most of the settlers who came in 1855 and 1856 stayed only a short time.

50th Annual Marigold Days Sept. 12 & 13, 2015 It all began with the humble marigold, a hearty and colorful little flower native to the Americas. Initially begun as a flower show to promote the planting of marigolds throughout the Mantorville community, with the sponsorship of Marigold Dairies, this event has grown to be on one the region’s best known and most attended annual festivals.

Pristine Prairie and Native Wildflowers: Much of the trail has been built over what was once the railway of the old Milwaukee Road which dates back to the opening of the pristine prairies. That means this trail takes a person through remnants of the centuries-old tall grass prairie.

Lake Louise State Park: Because the trail runs through the park with its own picnic and camping facilities, hiking trails and even horse facilities, NO park admission fee is required for those who enter the park on the trail.

The Shooting Star Trail

The eastern trailhead is in LeRoy on MN 56 near US 63.

The trail goes immediately through Lake Louise State Park on toward Taopi and Adams, right past the city park and on to the western trailhead in Rose Creek, 5 miles south of I-90 on MN 56, which is just a few miles outside of Austin.

Parking & Rest Areas: You will find plenty of parking at the trailhead at LeRoy, at the Adams City Park, near the Rose Creek trailhead and at the Rose Pedaler on MN 56 and at the Taopi rest area. Restrooms and picnic areas are found at the Adams City park adjacent to the trail, at Taopi and at the LeRoy trailhead. Bike racks have been placed at a number of key places and rest benches, too.

Understand What You’re Getting Into

Not only is it important for you to see what assisted living residences have to offer residents, you should pay close attention to the potential neighbors. Ask yourself questions like, Are they well-dressed and clean? Do they seem content? Are they wandering the halls? Does the staff appear attentive to the needs of residents? What’s on the communal TV when you walk in?

The worst thing you can do when jumping into uncharted waters is not know what to expect, says Theresa Spinner of the National Association of Social Workers. When it comes to an assisted living residence, picture a community with supportive services for senior citizens. These services are not required round-the-clock; they include housekeeping, mild personal care (such as bathing and dressing), and transportation.

“For instance, if what’s on TV is the type of show that the on-duty staffers like to watch, it may be the case that the needs and preferences of the residents are not truly being taken into account,” says Somers.

From small homes to big apartment complexes, assisted living communities include amenities like kitchenettes, private or shared rooms, and group activities. When it comes to dining options, they range from personal eating experiences to meals served in a common area with other residents.

Inquire About the Social Life Planned activities and events are important to residents at assisted living facilities. “They’re a significant part of keeping your loved ones active and sharp,” Somers explains. Ask your tour guide or community representative if the facility has an event planner and/or monthly event calendar, and be sure to meet the planner or get a copy of the latest calendar.

Visit in Person Brochures make any retirement home look good--after all, most of these communities operate like businesses. They charge residents rent as well as fees for other services. “Be sure to visit the homes [you’re considering] to see how the staff interacts with the residents and each other,” says Dr. Marion Somers, a geriatric care manager. “This will give you a good sense of the true environment of the facility.”

Another good question to ask is if it’s easy to access public transportation. Many residents in assisted living facilities don’t have cars or are not comfortable with driving, but they can certainly take buses or trains to go to events off site.

The elder care expert who authored “Elder Care Made Easier” believes a tour of homes - just like a tour of colleges - will help you decide which one is the best fit.

Though it may sound sneaky, sometimes it’s good to pay a home a surprise visit before committing. “Visit the assisted living facility at an unscheduled time,” suggests Somers, “so you can observe things you might not see on the ‘official’ tour.”

Investigate Safety and Security “Make sure safety and security at the assisted living residency is obvious and a priority,” says Somers. She suggests only considering facilities that have security guards and medical care on-site 24 hours a day. “Alarm systems should be in-house, not an outsourced service,” she adds.

Tiny’s Body Shop in Austin Gary “Tiny” Davidson and his wife Fran opened Tiny’s Body Shop in 1961 on 18th Avenue NW. Their sons Tim and Tom both “worked” at the shop as kids, sweeping the floors at the end of each day. Tim joined the business full time in 1979, followed by Tom in 1987. In 1989, Tiny started the tradition of putting Christmas lights on an old car and displaying it in front of the business thru New Years. Tiny and his sons worked side by side until he was forced to quit for health reasons. He then worked as the office manager until his passing in 1999. Automotive Collision Specialists, Inc. In 1981, Randy Miller, a native of Owatonna, bought an undercoating company’s tools and inventory on a sealed auction. Unemployed, it was what was needed to start a home based body shop in Austin, which he named, “Randy’s Body Shop”. He worked for 7 years out of a double garage until 1988. A customer base was established by doing body work that included rust repair, paint jobs and installing accessories.

In 1988, Randy decided to expand his business and built an 1,800 square foot building at the same location and slightly changed the name to “Randy’s Autobody”. It was equipped with new paint booth, frame straightening equipment and body tools needed to repair collision damage. He hired his first employee, Mark Reynan, in 1990.

Getting established with insurance company repairs, he hired Josh Canterbury in 1995, as well.

In 2001, Randy incorporated the business and changed the name to “Collision Specialists, Inc.” (CSI). A new 8,300 square foot facility was constructed in 2003 and is now the home of CSI. It has been more of a family setting in 2004 and 2006. Scott and Nick Miller, Randy’s sons, became employed at CSI, along with Mike Holten, Tom Cartin, Dave Janke, and Chase Jasmer, nine employees altogether.

CSI has been a strong Employment Partner with Riverland College as all employees are graduated students and CSI maintains continuing education each year, participating in I-Car Gold Program (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair), ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Classes, and recently became certified from Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, including aluminum repair credentials.

CSI maintains a leadership position in the Austin area from repairing 60 vehicles in 1981 to 800+ in 2014.

Hormel Nature Center The 507-acre Jay C. Hormel Nature Center preserve was established in 1971 and is located in Western Mower County within the city limits of Austin. The Nature Center features restored and remnant prairie, hardwood forest, wetlands and meandering streams.
