HONORING THE LIVES

THAT HAVE GUIDED OUR OWN

Often when I ask a volunteer or donor why they support Meals On Wheels Atlanta, the answer, which usually flows out through a quiet smile, is that our seniors remind them of an older person in their own life who means a great deal to them. For me, that person is my mom.

I grew up in a tiny town deep in the Mississippi Delta at the height of segregation. My parents created a nurturing home and insulated me from the hate and injustice that were waiting for me out in the world. My mom fought tirelessly to give me opportunities that had been denied to communities of color.

She saw that I had a voracious appetite for reading, so she used her connections through work to secure a library card for me to the whites-only library in our town. She fought to get a swimming pool built for the community’s black families and took me for swimming lessons every morning in the summer.

For so many of us, the mission of Meals On Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) is ultimately about honoring the people in our lives who have nurtured and guided us. I am pleased to share with you MOWA’s 2022 Impact Report, which highlights how your generosity has enabled us to honor and serve our community’s seniors over the last year. We are deeply grateful for your support in 2022, and we hope these pages inspire you to cherish the warmth and wisdom that an older person in your life has shared with you.

1,468 SENIORS

MOWA’s meals program delivers nutritious, freshly prepared meals to seniors across Atlanta who are facing hunger.

In 2022, MOWA launched a new offering for our seniors: quarterly luncheons featuring a gourmet meal prepared by MOWA’s Kitchen Team, along with some entertainment and several lively rounds of BINGO!

A big thank-you to MOWA board member Kevin Lee for sponsoring the inaugural luncheon in December. It was wonderful to have our seniors back in the building for the first time since the start of the pandemic. We look forward to continuing these special luncheons for our seniors in 2023!

MOWA GRAND OPENING

In 2022, we completed the renovation of our facility, including a new commercial kitchen, food pantry, and volunteer reception area. The larger kitchen gives MOWA much-needed room to grow in the years to come.

5

Our new space also includes a beautiful event venue, 1705WEST, that will serve as a revenue-generator for MOWA. Turn to pg. 15-16 to learn more about 1705WEST!

Special thanks to Matthew Quinn, David Cook, Rachel Martin, and Ric Parrish at Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio for so generously dedicating their time, talents, and resources to make this renovation a reality.

Paula and Glenn Wallace of SCAD curated a stunning collection of artwork from SCAD alumni that is on display throughout the space.

Kevin Cerchiai has worked in the entertainment industry for over 30 years as a sound technician on feature films and television. He has been part of teams nominated for an Academy Award for Sound Mixing on two films: Transformers and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

When he is not on a movie set, Kevin likes spending his time volunteering in the community. When COVID-19 hit, he and his family adopted a meal delivery route as a way to support the most vulnerable during the pandemic. Three years later, the seniors on Kevin’s route have come to look forward to his deliveries and the conversations that often follow.

Thank you, Kevin, for the kindness and friendship you bring to our seniors each week!
