School Expeditions Training Programme KENYA Pre-trip Training We offer a series of face-to-face training sessions prior to trip departure. The sessions are interactive and are designed to engage students with some of the common issues they will encounter during their time on an Africamp.

The material covered will include:   

Activities to do during the camp in the context of cultural awareness and how to ensure a successful Africamp!

Different models of international development and the Moving Mountains model – a deeper understanding of how your trip fits into the long term goals of the charity.

Challenging stereotypes which may affect the experience of being in Africa.

Resource Packs We encourage a collaboration of skills and interests in order to expand our training programme. We have a series of resource packs for teachers and group leaders to explore with groups at their own pace, including: 

Drama and theatre for development in East Africa; drama is a great tool to interact with the Kenyan young people on your Africamp, and the wider connotations of theatre for social change in the region.



Swahili language lessons; expand on the knowledge you have gained during our face-to-face sessions with links to various online resources and much more information about the Swahili language!



Music and dance; there will be lots of singing and dancing during your Africamp so why not brush up on some knowledge about variations of local music and the culture around music in the region? Prepare your own dance routine for the nights around the bonfire!



Football coaching and sport; learn more about the relationship between sport and development and help our coaches with the ‘Black Cats’ football teams across Kenya.

Online Resources We have a bank of online resources consisting of articles, essays, videos and webpages relevant to international development and volunteer travel.

In-country Sessions This is the best time to learn from our local staff. They will be with you throughout the whole trip and through informal chats and group discussions they will offer training on topics such as:  





The history and culture of the area you are working in, and of the country you are visiting.

Development at home – Their experiences of working in the field of development, how they became involved with Moving Mountains and how they are actively working towards positive change in their own countries.

Helping you to process the experience – There is a lot to take in over the course of this trip, and this can generate a lot of feelings you may be unsure about. Use the local staff who have been involved with similar trips for many years to work through some of these thoughts.

Other Moving Mountains projects and examples of development; learn about the wider reach of Moving Mountains and the history and current progress of some of our other projects.

Post-trip Debrief Support Meet with the Moving Mountains UK Staff to help make the most of out of your experience and hopefully stay involved with this charity, including:   

Different opportunities to stay involved with Moving Mountains at home and abroad.

What the experience has meant to you and how you can use it for positive change in your own personal development and also in your community at home.

How your thoughts on East Africa and International Development may have changed and support in processing these.

It is our hope that this training programme will prepare and support you throughout all stages of your experience with Moving Mountains.
