Introduction of Moving Mountains Kenya Rose Gathirimu, Chairlady

Who We Are Moving Mountains Kenya is a charitable organisation registered under the Office of the President and the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board under the reference OP.218/051/2004/0387/3422. Moving Mountains Kenya is officially linked and supported by the Moving Mountains Trust, a U.K. registered charity based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, accepted as a charity by the U.K. Inland Revenue under the reference XR62512.

Our Mission Moving Mountains exists to care for and help rehabilitate children and young people through actively encouraging rural and urban community development.

Moving Mountains seeks to relieve hardship in areas of difficult circumstances through financial assistance, education, and vocational training, medical aid and treatment where necessary.

By working together with the local communities we can create a safer world where the children and young people can take control over their own lives and enjoy their basic rights.

How We Operate Moving Mountains exists to promote the welfare of street children/children in difficult situations in Kenya, through the support of their education, medical needs and specific requirements such as food, accommodation, books, uniforms and transport to and from school or college.

We support families with grand’s to run small businesses, enabling them to fund the upkeep of their children. We work very closely with the communities, the schools and the families so that the children get a level of support that is much more than financial. It is essentially a surrogate family working within the system that the children understand and appreciate.

Working with schools, we run a variety of renovation projects to improve the facilities such as classrooms, libraries, kitchens and toilets. Working with local communities, we run a variety of construction and renovation projects to improve community facilities such as clinics, orphanages, vocational centres and meeting halls.

Moving Mountains has an official Partner Organisation in the company Africampers Tours and Safaris (a subsidiary of Adventure Alternative Ltd, U.K.), licensed under the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife under the Registration Number 421271. Africampers supports the charity by donating time and money to the charity in the form of vehicles, office facilities and administration costs. Africampers now provides further support by paying salary and overhead costs of the charity.

It is important to us that Moving Mountains is transparent and relevant, not just to us and the children we support, but also to the donors.

Programmes and Projects of Moving Mountains Kenya Francis Kioni – Secretary

Introduction Our main objective is to support children academically. We sponsor children in primary schools, secondary schools, in vocational training courses, polytechnics and university. We support children from slum areas of Nairobi and in Embu in Eastern Kenya, Siaya in Western Kenya, Nyeri in Central Kenya, and Mombasa.

Moving Mountains works with local communities to understand their needs and through this understanding we are able to run a variety of construction and renovation projects to improve community facilities. We have carried out programmes of development at Muthurwa Primary School in Nairobi’s industrial district, at Ushirika Clinic in the Kibera slums, at the Community Rescue Centre in Embu and we have built the Ulamba Moving Mountains Orphanage in Siaya.

Moving Mountains supports feeding programmes as part of our drives to encourage children to come to school to learn with a full stomach this is through feeding programmes in Embu and Mombasa. In addition, we support sports programmes (Black cats football team in Nairobi, Embu and western Kenya) as part of our drive to involve children in sports and clubs.

Working with our official partner organisation Adventure Alternative, Moving Mountains facilitates medical elective placements and teacher placements in hospitals, clinics and schools in Nairobi and throughout Kenya. In addition, Adventure Alternative actively promotes a strong ethical policy, which enables clients to involve themselves in the charity and understand that their tour or safari directly supports the running of Moving Mountains and the children. Many of the Adventure Alternative trips encourage clients to see with their own eyes the work of the charity, and to offer their own comments.

Supporting Disadvantaged Children The primary work of Moving Mountains is support of the education and welfare of street children and those in difficult circumstances. We personally nurture each and every child and take a specific interest in their future and their dreams and ambitions. We know all the children personally and ensure we build trust and knowledge on all sides. We ensure the children are given the rights of any child in the world and they develop into good citizens with a support network of family and community. In this respect, we try not to breed self-reliance, but build self-esteem and hope.

We support children through primary school and as these children grow and move on in their education, we continue to support them into secondary school, polytechnic and university and into vocational training courses and the workplace. We provide the children with school uniforms, exercise and text books, and school and college fees and cater for specific requirements such as school lunches and transport fares to and from school or college. When we commit to helping a child, we commit for a long time. We know every child by name; we know their families, their communities, their teachers, their friends. We are an active part of their lives, an addition within the total circle of their upbringing, not just an anonymous benefactor.

Moving Mountains ensures that the children and their families have adequate housing and medical care and where possible. We help with family problems, with social issues and with life skills.

Moving Mountains is not just about handing out money, but empowering people. Money, whilst important, is a tool to assist and not an end in itself to poverty or oppression.

PROJECTS IN NAIROBI 

Ushirika clinic

Moving Mountains along with a group of students from the Skerries Community College, Northern Ireland, funded and then built a new wing at Ushirika Clinic. This fully functioning wing has doubled the size of the clinic and specialises in caring for the local community members and children who are suffering from TB and HIV/AIDS. Ushirika Clinic HIV/AIDS clinic has already been inspected and registered .Amref has partner with the clinic so it can receive free anti-retroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients. Moving mountains has also been facilitating the community health workers programme in home based visits as well as accompanying the medical electives in Kibera The clinic has been receiving drugs and equipments which are very much needed for the proper management of diseases and illnesses in Kibera. We are currently paying salaries for 3 staff that are directly involved with the HIV/AIDS program. 

S.T Christine Primary school This year the team from Wales did major renovations to the school .The school got partitioning of 3 classroom and plastered floors .They also have a decent Kitchen whereby the food for the 306 students can be hygienically prepared. The school participated in this project and enjoyed playing games and singing songs with the Welsh team.

PROJECTS IN EASTERN KENYA 

Rescue Centre

We have continued doing renovations to the already existing structure which are been used to teach adult classes and tailoring course.

The other facilities like toilets, washroom and Kitchen are been used well for the good of the centre. Currently in Embu rehabilitation on boys and girls who have been abusing drugs is going on. Children from difficult circumstances too come to the rescue centre to be fed and there are able to receive counselling and a place to share about school .It is also a chance for the staff to learn more about the children and support them re-unite back to their families or pave a way for supporting the family live a better life.

By having the boys coming to the rescue centre it has become not only a home but a place they find love and comfort they are proud to be identified with black cats as when they go out for games people cheer for them and this makes them really happy and worthwhile.

It also serves as an important introductory point for those children looking for rehabilitation from habits such as sniffing glue and smoking marijuana.

The cook and watchman employed at the centre work really hard and the community fully identifies with the work they do there them been local people too, not strangers (from other places e.g. Nairobi) employed to work.  Full Sponsorship The charity has continued to support children in primary, secondary and polytechnic who are either half or full orphans. The children do receive school fees, uniform, books and stationery as well as personal effects. While on school holidays we have been able to organise some food for the whole family .The children now do better in their exams and this does encourage their guardians to also work harder.



Embu County Primary

The school has continued to get support from the charity in terms of renovation of floors for 6 classrooms and paint work .We recently build a toilet block and boys urinal .A water catchments project and made some desks for them .

Since 2008 the school has been having a fun day where by the charity has been organising entertainment for a whole day. From drama, singing and poetry to bouncing castles face painting and a performance by a young UK musician (Danni Wilde) crowning the day .It has been a very exciting day for the children. 

Embu special school for the mentally handicapped

The school has benefited for the charity by getting paintwork on the wall done. This has made the children feel very happy in clean, brightly coloured walls. Some of the classes and cordials where very much destroyed with pot holes. The work team from MM did a renovation project making it easy to stroll around not tripping on and off.

PROJECTS IN CENTRAL KENYA 

Tigithi primary school

The school has benefited throughout the year by getting two classrooms constructed from scratch and one getting a finishing job done. The floor in one of the classroom that was infested with Jiggers now has a concrete floor.

The school has a big capacity of children who are from poor families and live in very poor conditions. 

Nanyuki Rescue Centre

The centre houses children who are from the streets of Nanyuki. Moving Mountains build a boys dormitory and shower block.

PROJECTS IN WESTERN KENYA (Siaya)  Wagai Primary School Wagai Primary school is one based in Wagai area .The catchments area where children go to school without shoes, food or even water .The students love education so much that even though they are in a mud falling building they will still keenly listen to the teacher .Over the year we have been able to construct 4 classrooms, a library with the funds from Australian High Commission and dug a bore hole so now they have access to drinking water. 

Nyasidi Primary school

Nyasidi primary been near a local market place has a big number of children that attend the school. Six classrooms and a church in the vicinity got renovated making children have a comfortable studying environment. An assistant teacher paid by the charity has made marking assignments and follow up on slow students more manageable



Kayeye Primary School

Kayeye been one of the schools in Siaya area with a special group of Deaf children .This year MM constructed a class for the children. Before the class was done they used to have classes under a tree. Since most of the deaf students live very far from school, attendance was a big issue so classes would be missed on and off .It is in this light that a dormitory was build at the school. An ECD class in the school was also build in the same year. Sighting the big need for water, Moving Mountains Kenya together with a team of volunteers from UK facilitated the restoration of a dormant bore hole by installing a water pump to supply clean drinking water for the children.  Wagwer Primary school This is one of the oldest schools in the area which was popular for having no development happening .The parent not been able to raise any development funds to repair the school or do development projects. The school now looks new with six classes renovated, three build from scratch. A Water pump is up and running with clean drinking water and currently a computer room has been constructed. The school has received donation of text books and stationary .The school has seen great academic progress to even becoming the second in the division. School attendance and pride getting higher and higher by the day. 

Wagwer Secondary School

The secondary school has a really humble beginning with the aim of giving education to those children that did well but couldn’t afford to go to boarding schools .With not much infrastructure to impact the children with Knowledge, the Charity, together with a school in UK (King Edward school) have built a library, laboratory and renovated classrooms .The students have received stationary, 20 full sponsorships and laboratory equipments. 

Kuomok Primary School

Like Wagwer, Kuomok is a very old school and renovation was so much needed. The classrooms made of mud over years had lost the windows making them look like doors such that kids would enter and exit the class through them. Six of the classroom were renovated and build with stones .The school also benefited from a water pump making drinking water more accessible for the whole community.

The children’s vocabularies have improved so has their grammar and they are now more confident speaking in English. They have initiated projects like burning bricks, purchasing of domestic animals, fencing the schools and also renovating classrooms.

Ulamba Moving Mountains Orphanage In the summer of 2005, Moving Mountains undertook a project in Siaya with a team from the U.K. and Ireland who built the Ulamba Moving Mountains Orphanage. The orphanage is now open and houses 36 children and also includes staff quarters and a kitchen. The orphanage gives the local children a place to call home rather than sleeping rough in the market places. The orphanage has also a community hall that the community hold meetings and educational sessions on HIV/AIDS.A clinic that is the process of registration is also in the vicinity .Every Friday the Rotary doctor offer free medical services to the community.

Two ECD classes were build and are currently having a total of 20 children in baby class learning how to read , write and having fun while at it.

2009 will always linger in the minds of the children as it was the first time for 36 of them to visit Nairobi and Mombasa cities. They were taken on a week’s holiday and travel by overland truck to the coast .They had an amazing time and were very grateful for the organisers of the whole trip and their generous donation.

Medical Elective Placements Working with our official partner organisation, Adventure Alternative we facilitate six to eight week medical placements in clinics and hospitals in either rural regions or urban slum areas. These placements allow medical students to experience all the aspects of supervised hospital ward rounds and also the extremely emotional and colourful experience of working in a slum clinic. These medical electives have a direct impact on the work of Moving Mountains at the grass roots level by contributing to the vital educational and medical support of street children and their families in the poorest areas.

Teacher Placements Working with our official partner organisation, Adventure Alternative, we arrange for teachers to work in either rural schools or urban slum schools and become immersed in experiencing living in Kenya. These teachers are involved specifically in teaching children on a daily basis, and in part relieve the plight of street children in the school. Importantly, the presence of these teachers contributes to the overall morale of the school and its teachers, and contributes to an improvement in academic standards of the pupils.

Black Cats Football club In 2005, Moving Mountains started the Black Cats United Football Club, a team of footballers from the Nairobi slums. We have continued to support the Black Cats with football kits balls and facilitated with transport cost to games and some food. The Black Cats are a part of our drive to involve children in sports and clubs and the success is such that we now support a full time coach of the teams. The Black Cats have grown from their modest beginnings and now has a senior team, a junior team and a girls’ team in Nairobi, Western and Embu. There are several of its players who have attracted interest of scouts and National Team officials. They have received lots of trophy and that has given them a lot of pride. The Nairobi senor team is in the super league.

In Embu most of the boys that have been undergoing rehabilitation from substance abuse and are now in vocational colleges as well as running small business. They are very proud of what football can do and a great pride to Embu residence.

Just this year the Black Cats coaches from Nairobi and Western Kenya participated in the Premier Skills coach training in partnership with British council .The team represented the charity very well and exhibited a high level of leadership.

Future Aspirations As Moving Mountains continues to grow, we shall be able to support the educational needs of more children and youths to achieve a better future; we will also continue our projects of community development to move mountains in needy communities. As our network of support within Kenya continues to grow, we shall be able to assist more children and communities in many desperate parts of the country.

In addition to the continuing support of underprivileged children, Moving Mountains also plans a number of construction and renovation projects in 2010 and beyond. In Wagai primary school the remaining Work include deepening the boreholes Additional classrooms and finishing work on the administration block. At Nyasidi primary there is fence work and digging a bore hole as their first priorities.

Since in 2009 a dorm for the deaf was build, there is need for boarding facilities and another dorm to meet the demand. Kuomok is still in desperate need for another classroom and paint work on un –finished classroom. Wagwer secondary we hope to build a kitchen that all the school food is prepared at as the current one is collapsing. The administration block and two classrooms need finishing work.

At Ulamba the ECD class room has become so popular and so has the enrolment leading to a need for another classroom urgently. A cow at the home will be income generating project and some chickens too.

In Eastern and Central Kenya, county primary is in need of some 3 classrooms renovated and some paint work done. Tigithi primary six classrooms need to be renovated and more desks made and chairs to make sure that none of the children write on their laps In the summer of 2010 we shall be undertaking a large programme of development in Solio Ranch. We are planning to renovating and building classrooms in different school like Tigithi primary school in Naro Moro, County primary school in Embu. We are planning to build an early childhood Development class at Ulamba.

With their continued support we will be able to continue our vital work and as the charity continues to grow we will be able to support underprivileged children and communities throughout the country.
